US takes India to WTO over solar industry United States challenges India’s domestic content requirements in Phase II of India’s National Solar Mission IANS, WASHINGTON
I
n another potential blow to India-U.S. ties after the Khobragade affair, United States on February 10 challenged India’s domestic content requirements in Phase II of India’s National Solar Mission (NSM). “These domestic content requirements discriminate against U.S. exports by requiring solar power developers to use Indian-manufactured equipment instead of US equipment,” said U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Mike Froman. Announcing the “trade enforcement action” against India, Froman said it has requested World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement consultations with India on the issue.
“These unfair requirements are against WTO rules, and we are standing up today for the rights of American workers and businesses,” he said. “We also take this action in support of the rapid global deployment of renewable energy.” “These types of ‘localization’ measures not only are an unfair barrier to US exports, but also raise the cost of solar energy, hindering deployment of solar energy around the world, including in India,” he added. In October 2013, India’s cabinet approved measures governing the implementation of Phase II of the NSM. For solar projects under Phase II, India is again imposing domestic content requirements, under which solar power developers must use Indian-manufac-

tured solar cells and modules instead of US or other imported equipment, USTR said. Moreover, the Phase II domestic content requirements have been expanded to cover thin film technology, which was exempt from such requirements under Phase I, USTR said. As thin film currently comprises the majority of U.S. solar product exports to India, these domestic content requirements are likely to cause even greater harm to U.S. producers than under Phase I, it said. A request for consultations is the first step in the WTO dispute settlement process, and consultations are intended to help parties find a solution at this stage.
Obama warns firms of ‘India-US partnership would keep growing’ violating sanctions on Iran WASHINGTON: Senior Obama administration official has expressed confidence that despite recent setbacks India-United States strategic partnership will continue to grow whatever the outcome of India’s upcoming national elections. “For almost two decades, in both India and the United States, Presidents and Prime Ministers and political parties have come together and worked to overcome old schisms,” US National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice said on February 7.

ompanies that explore business opportunities in Iran do so “at their own peril”, US President Barack Obama said on February 11, vowing that the U.S. will come down “like a ton of bricks” on sanctions violators. The president made the remarks at a joint news conference with his French counterpart, Francois Hollande, alluding to a trip to Iran by a large French trade delegation earlier this month, Xinhua reported. “President Hollande and I agree on the need to continue enforcing existing sanctions even as we believe that new sanctions during these negotiations would endanger the possibility of a diplomatic solution,” Obama said. “Businesses may be exploring — are there some possibilities to get in sooner rather than later if and

when there is an actual agreement to be had?” Obama said. “But I can tell you that they do so at their own peril right now, because we will come down on them like a ton of bricks.” World powers sealed a landmark preliminary deal with Iran in November, under which Tehran agreed to halt its most sensitive nuclear operations in return for winning some relief from sanctions. The United States and the European Union have suspended some sanctions on Iran under the interim deal. But it does not mean opening business. Washington, has warned that the interim nuclear deal does not mean Iran is “open for business” and vowed to vigorously enforce existing sanctions.
“Piece by piece, we’re establishing a lasting partnership that’s equipped to tackle today’s global challenges,” she said addressing deleSusan E. Rice gates attending the Aspen Institute U.S.-India Dialogue at the Indian ambassador S. Jaishankar’s residence. “And, the United States is confident that, whatever the outcome of India’s upcoming national
elections, the cooperation and strategic partnership between our nations will continue to grow,” Rice said. The dialogue has been convened by the Aspen Strategy Group, a bipartisan US policy forum, in conjunction with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Aspen Ananta Centre to take a broad look at the Indo-US relationship. President Barack Obama’s key adviser said she was not suggesting “that there aren’t real challenges to overcome.”
Most favor pathway to illegal citizens IANS, WASHINGTON
E
ven as a new poll found that Americans overwhelmingly favor a pathway towards citizenship for 11 million undocumented individuals, including 300,000 Indians, a top Republican has signalled that any action on this is unlikely this year. A CNN/ORC International survey also indicated that a majority of the public says that the government’s main focus should be legalizing the status of the undocu-
mented rather than border security. But John Boehner, speaker of the Republican controlled House, signalled that any action on immigration is unlikely this year because House Republicans don’t trust President Barack Obama on the issue. “There’s widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws
and it’s going to be difficult to move any immigration legislation until that changes,” Boehner said. Fifty four percent say the top priority for the government in dealing with the issue of illegal immigration should be developing a plan that would allow undocumented immigrants with jobs to eventually become legal U.S. residents.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on February 11 ordered the city’s anti-corruption wing to file criminal cases against Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and Petroleum Minister M. Also named were Moily’s predecessor in the oil ministry, Murli Deora, and former director general of hydrocarbons V.K. Sibal. Both Moily and Reliance Industries rubbished the allegation. “We should sympathize with his (Kejriwal’s) ignorance. He does not know how the government runs. Norms are followed. judicial commission and a Supreme Court-appointed special investigation that probed the 2002 Gujarat violence glossed over crucial evidence to shield Chief Minister Narendra Modi, a new revealing book says. “The Fiction of Fact-Finding: Modi and Godhra” by journalist Manoj Mitta (Harper Collins) says
Modi, now the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, was treated with kid gloves despite the many allegations against him vis-à-vis the death of over 1,000 people in the communal violence. “This book is about mistakes committed in the course of factfinding on the Gujarat carnage,” says the exhaustive study based on the reports of committees, commissions and investigating agencies besides court orders and judgments. In the process, vital pieces of evidence which could have implicated Gujarat’s leadership in the communal orgy were allowed “to fall through the cracks and distortions go unchallenged”. Mitta trashes the SIT for refusing to challenge Modi’s replies when he was questioned over the riots.

In what was his personal first and the last such exercise in the 15th Lok Sabha for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Kharge also promised a new tariff-setting body and said work on eastern and western freight corridors was progressing well. Anticipating a healthier economic growth, the freight traffic target, he said, was also proposed higher at other documents that included a 1,101 million tonnes. “Specially designed coaches for vote on account for the first four months of the next fiscal, was laid adverse weather conditions have been inducted for rail travel in Kashon the table of the house. Fresh elections may take place as early as 2016 Rahul Gandhi has made it quite explicit in his TV interview that he has no fire in his belly for political power. But the Congress party is splurging hundreds of crores of rupees on a publicity blitz to boost his image. oved by an insight gained during a vacation in India four years ago, a British citizen of Indian origin has launched an initiative that provides 22 hospitals across the country with the latest medical equipment to make cancer treatment accessible and affordable. Shashi Kant Baliyan, who is in India for three years, recalls how his Diwali holiday here took a new turn after he attended a medical conference in Hisar in Haryana in 2009 with a friend, a radiation oncologist. “I realized that people had to travel far for cancer treatment.
the country. Young people are getting affected by it and you cannot imagine the number of queries I get,” said Baliyan, a doctor and a management professional. According to the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, there are 2 to 2.5 million cancer patients in India at any given time. The equipment is maintained by his company on contracts that run 15-20 years till the machine outlives its life and becomes obsolete, said Baliyan, who lives with his wife and children in Gurgaon, Haryana. “In two years, 22 hospitals in Delhi, Hisar, Vadodara, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Patna, Indore and Gwalior have signed contracts
‘Our initiative has also cut costs for patients by 50 percent or even more as compared to any diagnostic centre’ Even then most hospitals in smaller towns were not equipped with the right equipment to treat them. I went back to Britain and discussed it with a few friends after which I started shunting between London and Delhi to do something concrete about this,” Baliyan told IANS. Baliyan’s ClearMedi Healthcare — a joint venture between Medipass (La Repubblica group) S.r.l. Italy, KOS S.p.A. Italy and Clearview Healthcare India — providing hospitals with the best equipment for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Hospitals, private or government-run, are also supported by trained manpower and its staff trained by specialists. All this has helped cut costs by 50 percent or more. “Among the equipment we supply are linear accelerators, radiology equipment and those used for nuclear medicine. We have focussed on cancer because of its high incidence in
with us,” Baliyan said. In Delhi’s Hamdard Imaging Centre (Jamia Hamdard), his company has supplied equipment for MRIs, CT scans, Mammography and Digital X-Rays, while Ashwin Hospital in Coimbatore has been equipped with a Linac (linear particle accelerator used for radiation therapy). “Other than accessibility to diagnosis and treatment, our initiative has also cut costs for patients by 50 percent or even more as compared to any diagnostic centre. An MRI scan costs Rs.8,000 in a diagnostic centre, of which half goes to the doctor. We remove those frills and charge the basic cost,” he said. “In Delhi, the cost is half. In Hisar, the cost is one-third. The patient pays the hospital directly, not to us. So, there is no discrepancy.” A CT scan in a ClearMediaided hospital costs `1,600. Elsewhere, the cost ranges between `4,000 and `5,000.

anhattan’s IndianAmerican United States Attorney Preet Bharara has struck again with the conviction of an Indian-American portfolio manager, giving him an enviable 79-0 record in his four-year long crackdown on insider-trading on Wall Street. A jury of seven women and five men found former SAC Capital Advisor portfolio manager Mathew Martoma, 39, guilty on one count of conspiracy and two counts of securities fraud. Martoma could end up with a 15-year sentence, given that he was involved in

He remains free on appeal. Martoma could get a 15-year sentence.
No compensation for Indian doctor SYDNEY: The government of the Australian state of Queensland has said it will not approve any compensation request by India-born doctor Jayant Patel for the Jayant Patel time he spent in jail. The former surgeon at Bundaberg Base Hospital in the Australian state of Queensland, was last year convicted of fraud and sentenced to two years in prison but he walked free due to the time he had already spent in custody for earlier convictions that were subsequently overturned by a higher court. Patel was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Rodney Vowles, 66, by unnecessarily removing his colon and rectum in 2004. Jarrod Bleijie, attorney-general of Queensland, said that Patel may seek damages. “I have not received anything in writing in respect to that,” ABC News quoted Bleijie as saying. “As I understand it, Patel has indicated that he will be writing to the government wanting compensation. There will be no compensation, there will be no entertainment of the idea of compensation,” Bleijie added.

Such prayer groups are helping leaders worldwide to serve with greater moral courage, Shah said. n Indian construction worker, the first of 25 men accused of taking part in last years’ riots at Little India to plead guilty, was jailed for 15 weeks by a court here on February 10. Chinnappa Vijayaragunatha Poopathi, 32, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of failing to disperse, Today Online reported. He was initially charged with rioting. The charge was amended after the Singapore attorney general’s chambers considered factors of his involvement in the riot. The court heard that Chinnappa and a friend bought beer from a shop December 8, consumed it and later proceeded to Chander Road in Little India. The pair decided to go to a food court called Kodai Canteen located at the junction of Kerbau Road and Chander Road around 11 p.m.

Koirala is new Nepal PM
Nepal’s newly elected Prime Minister Sushil Koirala (centre) with colleagues. ANIL GIRI, KATHMANDU
N
epal’s newly-elected Prime Minister Sushil Koirala was sworn in here on February 11. No member of the coalition partner Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist’s (CPN-UML) members, however, took oath, the party insisting on the home portfolio. Koirala, of the Nepali Congress, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Baran Yadav in the presence of top leaders of major political parties, heads of security agencies, members of Kathmandu-based diplomatic corps and senior government officials. Only a two-member cabi-
net was installed on February 11 following Koirala’s oath-taking and it is likely that the cabinet will be expanded later only after the row over portfolio allocation is settled. The ticklish issue of allocation of portfolios, particularly the home ministry, soured the relations between the two largest parties — the Nepali Congress and the CPNUML — within 24 hours of Koirala’s election to the post of prime minister. Though CPN-UML leaders did attend the swearing-in ceremony at the President’s Office, no one from the party joined the cabinet as the two coalition partners failed to agree on distribution of ministerial berths.
India, China hold border talk NEW DELHI: India and China held their 17th round of border talks here on February 11, stressing on peace and tranquility on their 4,000-km disputed boundary, and are set for their annual defense dialogue on February 24. Special representatives — National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon and Chinese State Councillor and top diplomat Yang Jiechi — met here on February 10 and 11 for talks on the boundary question. The talks between both sides have crossed the first stage — on agreeing to settlement of the boundary question. The second stage talks — on the “framework for resolution of the boundary question” — has been continuing for the past eight years. After the “framework” question is resolved, both sides will proceed to the third stage of talks.
236 candidates file nominations in Maldives MALE: A total of 236 candidates have so far filed nominations for the March 22 elections to Maldives’ 85-seat parliament, media reported on February 11 citing the Elections Commission of the archipelago nation. Ali Mohamed Manik, a member of the commission, Monday said the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had filed nominations for all the 85 seats of the People’s Majlis, according to Haveeru Online. Manik said the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had filed
nominations for only 37 seats, despite the party’s announcement that it would contest from 50 constituencies. The pro-government Jumhoory Party (JP) had filed 29 nominations. The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) had filed six nominations, the Adhaalath Party 11, and the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) five, Manik said. Adhaalath party, a religious conservative party, has decided to run from 13 constituencies independently after the ruling coalition failed to meet their demand for more seats.
Sharif heads to Turkey for trilateral summit ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on February 12 left for Ankara on a three-day visit to attend the Turkey-Afghanistan-Pakistan Trilateral Summit, officials said. The trilateral meeting, an important platform for high-level dialogue, security cooperation, and economic development partnership, was launched in 2007. The summit is taking place in the backdrop of important political and security transitions in Afghanistan, including presidential and provincial council elections April 5 and the withdrawal of NATO/ISAF forces by
December 31, 2014, said a statement issued by the Pakistan foreign ministry. The theme of the 8th Trilateral Summit is ‘Sustainable Peace in the Heart of Asia’. The last summit was held in December 2012 in Ankara. During the summit, Sharif will have extensive interaction with Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as well as Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai. Senior members of the Prime Minister’s delegation would have meetings with their respective counterparts in trilateral formats.

alala Yousafzai, the teenaged Pakistani education activist attacked by the Taliban, is among the three candidates nominated for this year’s World Children’s Prize, also known as the Children’s Nobel. Yousafzai has been nominated “for her courageous and dangerous fight for girls’ right to education”, according to the website of the foundation that presents the award. “She started to speak out for girls’ rights at the age of 11, when the Taliban banned girls from going to school in the Swat Valley in Pakistan,” it stated. “Malala defied the rules and kept going to school. Her life was under threat and at times she had to go into hiding. Finally, at the age of 15 Malala was shot and almost killed by the Taliban on her way home from school. But Malala survived.” According to Yousafzai’s candidate profile, the Taliban thought they could silence Malala by killing her. “Instead they gave her an even stronger voice, which can

now be heard all over the world,” it stated. The other two candidates in the running are John Wood, a former manager in Microsoft, and Indira Ranamagar, a Nepali child rights activist. “John Wood has been nominated for the 2014 World’s Children’s Prize for his 15-year fight for children’s right to education,” his candidate profile reads. “John quit his job as a manager at the Microsoft company to fulfil his dream: to fight poverty by giving children all over the world the chance to go to school.” Ranamagar has been nominated for her 20-year struggle for prisoners’ children in Nepal. “She grew up in extreme poverty... even as a young girl she knew that she wanted to help other people who had hard lives.”
ALGIERS: An Algerian military plane that crashed into a mountain in the country’s eastern region had 78 passengers on board and only one survived, the country’s defense ministry said. The C-130 Hercules military plane crashed in the province of Oum El Bouaghi around midday on February 11 on its way from the Tamenrasset airport, some 2,000 km southeast of Algiers, to the Constantine airport, 500 km east of Algeria’s capital Algiers, Xinhua reported citing a statement issued by the ministry. It carried 74 passengers - members of the Algerian armed forces and their relatives - and four crew members, the statement said. A survivor and 76 bodies were recovered at the crash site, including remains of four women, on Mount Fortas at an altitude of 1,400 meters.
One passenger has not been accountable so far. The sole survivor was seriously injured in the head and leg and has been taken to a military hospital in Constantine. The statement said the crash was likely caused by the lack of visibility due to the heavy snowfall and strong winds in the region. Local newspaper El Watan said one of the two black box flight recorders has been located. Earlier reports by local media said there were 103 people on board the plane.
Thailand senate elections on March 30 BANGKOK: Thailand’s caretaker government on February 11 approved a draft royal decree that sets the election of senators March 30, deputy spokeswoman said. Sunisa Lertpakawat, deputy government spokeswoman, said registration of the senatorial candidates would be on March 4-8, the Bangkok Post reported.
The senate is the upper house of the National Assembly of Thailand. The senate, which comprises 150 seats, operates under fixed terms of six years. The draft royal decree would be submitted to the king for endorsement, Sunisa said. The election is expected to fill the seats of elected senators, whose term will expire on March 31.
‘Little progress in Geneva II talks’ GENEVA: UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi on February 11 said that little progress has been achieved since the start of the second round of Syria peace talks resuming a day earlier. two sides “simultaneously” this morning, Brahimi told a press conference that the negotiations were as “laborious” as the first round did. “We are not making much progress,” he said, appealing to speed up actions to make this process a reality and help lift Syria out of the mire.”We will do our very best to make this process take off.” The mediator stressed the process requires cooperation from the two warring sides.

The second cricketer up for auction was Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene, who was the only one among the marquee players to go unsold. Pietsersen was first sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for `90 million but Daredevils used the Right to Match (RTM) card to buy him back. Royal Challengers almost got Yuvraj for `40 million cheaper but auctioneer Richard Madley had to open the bidding again after he missed Knight Riders bid.

DID DHONI, SRINIVASAN misrepresent facts to Mudgal? NEW DELHI: Serious doubts are being raised over the deposition of Indian cricket board president Narayanswami Srinivasan, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the India Cements management that Gurunath Meiyappan was not a team principal, only a cricket enthusiast with Chennai Super Kings, in a report submitted to the apex court. Retired Judge Mukul Mudgal in his report to the Supreme Court Monday said that Dhoni, Srinivasan and his company India Cements took the stand during the inquiry of the betting and the spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of Srinivasan, had nothing do with the cricketing affairs of Chennai Super
Kings. But in his due course of the probe, Mudgal found out that Meiyappan made it out to the world that he was indeed the team principal of Chennai Super Kings. Mudgal in his report has indicted Meiyappan of being involved in the betting scandal in the IPL. “Representatives of India Cements, who appeared before the Committee, contended that Mr. Meiyappan had no share holding in India Cements and hence cannot be considered as an owner of CSK (Chennai Super Kings). Further, Mr. M.S. Dhoni, Mr. N. Srinivasan and officials of India Cements took the stand that Mr. Meiyappan, had nothing to do with the cricketing affairs of Chennai Super Kings and was a mere cricket enthusiast supporting CSK.” Gurunath Meiyappan
International cricket: It’s all about money VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI
A
major offshoot of India unexpectedly winning the 1983 World Cup was that the Indian board was emboldened enough to take on the might of England and Australia and end their hegemony over world cricket once and for all. Though it took another 28 years for it to win the World Cup a second time, by now India had changed the dynamics of world cricket to become a big bully. The current Indian board presi-
dent Narayanaswamy Srinivasan, unlike his predecessors, smartly got England and Wales Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia (CA) to form a troika to gain control of interna-
tional cricket, browbeating the other ICC member nations to fall in line. For some strange reasons, Sri Lanka and Pakistan decided to oppose the Big Brother.
India thus now has an inviolable veto — which in any case it has been exercising for almost a decade by refusing to accept the Decision Review System (DRS) or arranging and scrapping tours to reduce the Future Tours Programme (FTP) to a mockery. Under the new dispensation there will be no FTP, it will all be bilateral arrangements. The three boards will now decide what is good for other players in the ICC. India contributes 80 percent of the ICC revenue and holds the whip in deciding on tours.

Juhi keen to work with Salman
I’ve not gone under the knife: Anushka MUMBAI: Actress Anushka Sharma, who is being talked about for her fuller lips, denies going under the knife for the new look. She attributes her changed looks to a temporary lip enhancing tool for her role in the upcoming movie Bombay Velvet. The speculation started after Anushka, who made her Bollywood debut with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, appeared on Koffee With Karan. The 25-year-old took to microblogging website Twitter to deny reports of having undergone cosmetic surgery. “...Lately there has been a lot of talk about me in this particular episode of ‘Koffee with Karan’. Mainly regarding my lips. I am here to just convey what I have to say regarding the same. I am talking about it only because this story has taken a scary direction and things have been ‘blown out of proportion’ (pun intended),” Anushka tweeted Monday night. “For a short while now, I have been using a temporary lip enhancing tool and that along with makeup techniques (I have learnt over the years) is the reason why there might be a change in the appearance of my lips. “...Let me assure everyone that I have by no means gone ‘under the knife’ or done any kind of ‘plastic surgery’ or undergone any intrusive procedure.”
Armaan’s V Day plans go haywire MUMBAI: There were reports that Armaan Kohli and Tanishaa would be traveling to an exotic location to celebrate Valentine’s Day. But the plan stands cancelled reportedly due to Armaan’s injuries.
“Tanishaa and I were to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Greece, but because of my knee injury and back pain, we thought it would be better to cancel the plan and go later when I feel a little better,” Armaan was quoted as saying. “We have cancelled our hotel reservations, tickets, etc. It’s very disappointing and unfortunate since we were looking forward to it, but it’s not the end of the world. There’s always a next time.” The couple will now celebrate the day in Mumbai. “We will definitely spend the day together. When two people love each other and it’s Valentine’s Day, there are bound to be gifts, but that’s a surprise,” he said.
MUMBAI: Actress Juhi Chawla, who has worked with stars like Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in her prime, hopes that someday she is paired with Salman Khan in a movie. “I hope I get to work with Salman...he will not work with me because he hasn’t in all these years,” Juhi told IANS as she laughed. “I don’t see that happening. But I never thought I will be working with Madhuri (Dixit)... so you never know. I would love to do anything which is justified on papers,” she added. Juhi and Madhuri are working together for the first time in Gulaab Gang.
Preity Zinta under debt? MUMBAI: Actress-turned-businesswoman Preity Zinta has rubbished reports suggesting that she is looking to “lease out” her flat in Khar locality here to pay off her debts saying “it’s thousand percent untrue”. “By the grace of god, I’m most comfortably able to look after myself financially. It is not only untrue it’s extremely irritating to read

such fabrications about oneself,” added the actress of hits like Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho. “There is so much drama in that story. ‘Bechari’ (poor) Preity. She has to vacate her ‘mahal’ (palace) and live in a ‘jhopdi’ (shanty) because the cruel creditors are breaking down her door. I wish people would look for their afternoon soap opera scripts somewhere else.”
Want to overcome my fears: Karanvir
MUMBAI: Actor-producer Ajay Devgn, who shies away from dancing, says he couldn’t escape Action Jackson director Prabhudheva, who made him shake a leg in two songs. “Prabhu made me work really hard for the film. He made me dance, which I generally run away from,” Ajay told IANS. “I have shot for two songs. We have total five songs in the film and the rest are yet to be shot and I don’t know how am I going to do them,” added the 44-year-old. In the film, Ajay has teamed up with Sonakshi Sinha. However, when asked about his role in Action Jackson, he refused to divulge details.
Asin works only with superstars? MUMBAI: There is this impression that Asin, who made a Bollywood debut opposite Aamir Khan in Ghajini, works only with big names in Bollywood. However, she rubbishes the claims. “It is a wrong interpretation. I am happy that I have got to work with established actors. But apart from them I am open to do films with anyone. The script should be good enough,” said Asin, who went on to work with Salman Khan in Ready post her debut with Aamir.
NEW DELHI: Actor Karanvir Bohra, known for portraying different shades in shows like Shararat, Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Dil Se Di Dua... Saubhagyavati Bhava?, has joined actionadventure show to rid himself of fears. The 31-year-old, who made his small-screen debut with Just Mohabbat in 1999, alongwith his actresswife Teejay Sidhu is participating in the fifth season of Khatron Ke Khiladi. Asked what made him say yes to the show, Karanvir said: “Because the show is exciting, adventurous and wild. I want to overcome my fears with the help of the show.” What are your fears? “I am scared of heights and performing under pressure. But I want to participate in the show without the fear of losing or winning the show,” he said. The show will air on Colors.

‘There is more to beauty than looks’
A woman should have an identity beyond just the way she looks, feels actor Katrina Kaif ANJURI NAYAR, NEW DELHI
R
ohit Shetty, one of the most successful directors of Bollywood and known for working with stars like Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan, says he will consider new faces when he will find the combination of a right script and fitting budget. Be it her flawless skin or well worked-out body, Katrina Kaif has always been known for her beauty. But the actress feels “there is more to beauty than just the physical appearance”. “I feel it is important not to get overly obsessed and overly carried away with just the physical aspect. There is more to beauty than just the physical appearance. You are also a complete person and a woman should have an identity beyond just the way she looks,” Katrina told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai. Media appearances and film shoots are regular in the actress' life, which require her to look perfect at all times. This can be “tough”, said Katrina.”It is tough in a way. You are a human being at the end of the day and everyone has his or her good days and bad days,” she said. Hair and make-up can be challenging for the actress, but the people who she works with often make
the “time consuming” job into fun. “I think the hardest thing is the hours spent in hair and make-up every day. It is time-consuming, but it can be fun when you are working with a new team,” said the 30year-old. She also says that keeping skin healthy and hair shiny is a tough job. You have to “keep at it”, says the actress, even doling out tips for this purpose. “Start with a good diet and healthy food. This is important for the body. You need to see that the products that you use are of the best quality...you have to make sure you are protecting your skin with a sun screen, using good shampoo and conditioner on your hair because
that is something that we don't take seriously,” said Katrina, who recently launched hair care range “6 Oil Nourish Hair care” by beauty brand L'Oréal Paris. The five must-haves in her daily routine are also equally practical and easy to follow. “Sun block, lip balm, a good shampoo and conditioner and a leave-in serum after you wash your hair, to apply,” she said.

A
ctor Hrithik Roshan will not be part of Karan Malhotra’s Shuddhi. However, he says he has decided to unite with the filmmaker for another film. “Karan Malhotra and I have decided to unite in the most ambitious way post Shuddhi. For now, I cannot allow a vision like Shuddhi to stagnate any further,” the 40year-old said in an official statement. The two have worked together
in Agneepath, a remake of the 1990 film of the same name, which was produced under Karan Johar’s banner Dharma Productions, which is now producing Shuddhi. It’s is believed that he has quit the film for health reasons. Hrithik has wished both the filmmakers success for the upcoming movie and hopes that it will be a “landmark” in the Indian cinema. “I had the finest experience an actor can have while working with Karan in Agneepath and I’m sure both my dear Karans (Malhotra and Johar) will go beyond with that one. Shuddhi remains a part of me in spirit and (I) am sure it will be a landmark in our cinema. I wish them all the best,” the actor said in the statement. Shuddhi was supposed to feature Hrithik and actress Kareena Kapoor.
‘Total Siyappa’ awaited in Pak
NEW DELHI: Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar says people in his home country are waiting for his next Bollywood film “Total Siyappa” and if things go as planned then the film will be premiered in Pakistan. “People in Pakistan are loving the promo of 'Total Siyappa', (and) they are waiting for its release. If everything goes
well, then we will have a big premiere of the film in Pakistan,” the 33-year-old said here at the Zee Cine awards. He also plans to invite for the premiere cricketer Shahid Afridi, whom he mockingly mentions in one of the dialogue in the film. “We will also invite Shahid Afridi for the premiere and if he comes, he will enjoy the context of that particular dialogue about him,” said Ali. The dialogue mentions Afridi in a funny way and it also created quite a stir when the promos of the movie came out. Directed by E. Niwas, “Total Siyappa” also stars Yami Gautam, Kirron Kher and Anupam Kher. It hits theatres March 7.
‘Heartless’— stylish career relaunch for Adhyayan Suman Film: Heartless; Cast: Adhyayan Suman, Ariana Ayam, Deepti Naval, Om Puri; Director: Shekhar Suman; Rating: ***
Y
ou really can’t put a good man down. Even when his heart breaks he bounces back stronger than before. So it is believed. But watching actor-turned-director Shekhar Suman’s directorial debut I am not too sure. His vulnerable ailing protagonist Aditya (played by the director’s son Adhyayan) goes through a series of life-changing knife-in-the-heart experiences that leave him disenchanted and shattered. Heartless is no ordinary coming-of-age story. It tells the powerful if illogical story of a young heir whose urgent need for a heart transplant puts him in an incredible medical and emotional crisis. The screenplay by Nina Arora weaves the story of love and betrayal into a tenable if somewhat far-
fetched medical condition known as anesthetic awareness. The first half when the romance between the weak-hearted Addy and the girl at the hotel reception (newcomer Ariana Ayam, treacherously sweet and adequate) unfolds has a zipped up classy quality to it. The courtship is cluttered with unwanted songs. And just this once, they are excusable. How can we have a modern day Devdas without the music flowing in his veins? Adhyayan Suman makes a confident comeback in the authorbacked role. His eyes are filled with a pain that seems more existential than physical. He brings to his borderline-ludicrous character a sense of bridled tragedy and a stifled desperation evident in his breathless

speech and anguished body language. He plays a life threatened with annihilation, stopping itself from falling apart in the nick of time. Adhyayan’s scenes with his screen mom Deepti Naval ring true even when they go from the real to the surreal to the other worldly. While Adhyayan’s character remains on its feet, the film works effectively and cogently. Once he is horizontal on the operation table the narrative suffers a rush of woozy incredulity requiring herculean amounts of suspension of belief from the audience. But all said and done Heartless works within its ambitious realm of love, betrayal and mortality. It makes an endearing departure from routine romances about broken hearts. — Subhash K. Jha

NJ doctor guilty of taking bribes BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EWARK (NJ) -- A Newarkbased doctor has been convicted of accepting cash bribes in exchange for referring patient tests to an area diagnostic facility, a conviction won at a second trial after the doctor’s first trial had ended in a hung jury. Maryam Jafari, a 43-year-old physician who had practised internal medicine, was found guilty on February 4 of three counts of conspiracy and two counts of violating the federal health care anti-kickback statute. Her sentencing will be scheduled at a later time by US District Judge Claire Cecchi, who presided over the trial. The jury deliberated for two hours after watching a three-week retrial unfold in a federal court in Newark. Jafari is the 14th doctor—and the 16th defendant overall—convicted in the case, which made headlines in 2011 when more than a dozen health care practitioners were charged in an alleged tests-for-cash-kickback scheme tied to Orange Community MRI LLC, an Orange-based diagnostic testing facility. Most of the defendants in the case have pleaded guilty before trial, including two defendants from the facility itself. Jafari’s lawyer Maria Noto said she and her client were “very disappointed” by the verdict. She said at both the first trial, and during this year’s retrial, she had argued that Jafari took money from Orange Community

MRI as rightful payment for her work advising the director of the facility on a business venture he was pursuing. Speaking of this year’s trial, Noto said, “We had presented email evidence that indicated Dr. Jafari had been attempting to help the government’s main witness (who was the facility’s director) … get his medical technologists training school affiliated with an area hospital.” Noto said she and Jafari had not decided whether they would appeal. Authorities, citing case documents and evidence from the trial, say from 2010 to
December 2011, Jafari solicited and received cash kickbacks from Orange Community MRI in exchange for referring magnetic resonance imaging tests and CAT scans to the facility. According to the superseding indictment against Jafari, Orange Community MRI paid Jafari about $50 for every MRI referral involving a Medicare or Medicaid patient and about $75 for each MRI referral involving patients with private health insurance. Authorities — again citing case documents and trial evidence — said that on November 22, 2011, Jafari met with a cooperating witness at her office and accepted a white envelope filled with $1,965 in cash, which was payment for three months of tests she had referred to the testing facility. In addition, Jafari took another $420 cash payment on December 6, 2011 in exchange for test referrals from October 2011. Authorities also say that at the end of each month, Orange Community MRI would print patient reports used to both tally the number of tests referred by various doctors and determine how much kickback money each should be paid. In 2011, Fishman alleged that defendants in the Orange Community MRI case got $51,500 in illegal bribes in the three months between October and December 2011. After Jafari’s first trial, her lawyer said she had been accused of reaping nearly $2,500 in cash kickbacks for herself.

Community Blood Services in Bergen County needs donors BY A STAFF WRITER
C
ommunity Blood Services, a not-for-profit organization that supplies blood and blood products to more than 30 hospitals in the NJ/NY region, has less than a one-day supply of blood on hand in Bergen County, Karen Ferriday, director of community affairs for the organization, said. Community Blood Services fell 28 per cent short of its collection goals for January. The organization especially needs Type O-negative donors. There has been continuing shortage of the rare O-negative blood donors because they represent only 7 per cent of the population and their blood can be transfused into anyone. There have been fewer blood drives and donations because of snowstorms, low temperatures and winter illnesses, Ferriday said. The shortage has also affected centers across the country, from which Community Blood Services imports to bolster its supply.

MAN ACCUSED OF HIRING FRIEND TO KILL WIFE IN BOONTON HATCHED SIMILAR PLAN BEFORE
BY A STAFF WRITER
M
ORRISTOWN (NJ) — Kashif Parvaiz, accused of hiring a friend to shoot his wife to death and wound him to make it look like a bias attack, had hatched a similar plot five months earlier when he asked to be attacked so he could provide a false story to the police, the friend has testified. Taking the witness stand for the first time during a pre-trial hearing in Superior Court in Morristown, Antionette Stephen said she and Parvaiz, of Brooklyn, started as friends but the relationship became “romantic” and stayed that way for a year until the shooting occurred. Stephen, 29, of Billerica, Mass., has pleaded guilty to murder in the death of Parvaiz’s wife, Nazish Noorani, on a Boonton street in August 2011, and is expected to testify against him during his trial. Parvaiz asked her in March 2011 “to come to his apartment to beat him up,” Stephen said. The alleged incident occurred in Boston, where Parvaiz, 28, was working and told friends he was attending graduate school at Harvard University. Stephen said Parvaiz wanted to “get back” at another former girlfriend, Yelena Belorusets, who had filed a domestic violence complaint against him. Parvaiz planned to blame the attack on Belorusets, Stephen said, adding that he intended to tell the police that Belorusets had arranged for three friends to beat him up. Stephen said she called the Boston police to falsely report the group attack. The story appeared to have parallels with the shooting in Boonton, when Parvaiz initially told the police that three black men had called him and his wife “terrorists” and then opened fire.
Fed govt okays $26.3m for NJ to buy homes in storm-hit Woodbridge
He later admitted in a recorded interview that he had hired a friend to kill his wife. Stephen testified during a hearing in which the prosecution is seeking to admit Parvaiz’s “prior bad acts” as evidence. Parvaiz also claimed Belorusets had tried to “blackmail” him after he stabbed someone at her father’s jewelry store, Stephen said. Stephen said Parvaiz had been “physically abusive” to her and hit her “a dozen” times, but she never reported the incidents to anyone. Stephen said she met Parvaiz in January 2010 at Boston Architectural College, where they were classmates. Stephen testified that Parvaiz told her he and his wife had been divorced “according to Islamic law,” but not under the state laws. Asked about the nature of their romantic relationship, Stephen said Parvaiz “was a good friend, but he’d lose his temper, and when he was stressed, he would lash out.” Parvaiz was always saying he “needed money” and Stephen testified she gave him a total of $19,000. Parvaiz said he needed the money to pay for his son’s medical treatments and to gather information about drug dealers that he said wanted to attack him, Stephen said. Parvaiz told her he had been an informant for the US Drug Enforcement Agency and the dealers wanted revenge for “getting them locked up,” Stephen said. Once, Stephen said, Parvaiz received a Federal Express box in the mail and it contained an animal leg. “He said that was a warning from the drug people that he was a target,” she said. Also testifying on February 7 was Martin Ragusa, 76, who befriended Parvaiz after he did some construction work on Ragusa’s Manhattan
home in 2002. Ragusa said that after he had a stroke in 2004, Parvaiz “took care of me” and “became like a son to me.” Par vaiz told him he was attending Columbia University and also needed money for his son’s medical treatment, so Ragusa said he gave him his Social Security checks to cover those expenses. Ragusa said he granted Parvaiz power of attorney and Parvaiz was supposed to pay the mortgage on his Manhattan home, along with all his other bills. Meanwhile, Ragusa said, Parvaiz was taking in $15,000 to $20,000 a month from two incomeproducing properties owned by Ragusa. In 2009, Ragusa said, he unknowingly signed over his $3 million share of a Queens apartment building to Parvaiz. He said he later learned that Parvaiz had not been paying his mortgage. A lawsuit filed by Ragusa over the Queens building is still pending. “I gave Kashif (Parwaiz) complete control because it was like a family,” Ragusa said, noting he made Parvaiz the sole beneficiary of his will. “I trusted him,” he added, breaking down into tears. The hearing is to continue on February 27.

OODBRIDGE (NJ) — The federal government has awarded New Jersey $26.3 million to enable it to buy 89 homes in flood-prone sections of Woodbridge. The state is in the process of buying homes from willing sellers affected by Superstorm Sandy to preserve the land as open space and protect against future flooding. Gov. Chris Christie says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has now approved $100 million for the purchase of 361 homes in Sayreville, South River and Woodbridge. These communities sustained extensive flooding from the Raritan River, South River and Woodbridge River, as well as storm surge from the Raritan Bay, during Sandy. So far, the state’s Blue Acres Program has made 272 buyout offers in Sayreville and South River. It has closed on 27 Sayreville homes, including four in the past week.

EW JERSEY-A Bergen County couple has claimed the largest Pick 6 jackpot hit in 2013, state lottery officials said. Allendale residents Janine and John Glasheen held the lucky ticket for the $12.8-million December 12 draw. Jamie made the purchase at Faber News & Gift shop in the Secaucus Junction train station while changing trains on her commute to Manhattan. “Janine brown-bags it when she travels to the city by train so she can play lottery games,” John said.
Janine’s winning numbers of 8, 14, 17, 31, 36 and 40 are the same ones she always plays, lottery officials said. The couple declined to be photographed or say what they do for a living, but told lottery officials they liked their neighborhood and do not plan to move. The Glasheens said they would like to visit Hawaii and Italy. Before Janine Glasheen bought her lucky ticket, the twice-weekly drawing had been held 36 times without a jackpot winner. No one has matched all six numbers since, making latest draw worth $4.3 million with a cash option of $2.9 million.

Sarsawati puja at Lake County’s Hindu Mandir
T
BY A STAFF WRITER
he Hindu Mandir of Lake County performed Ma Saraswati Puja on February 2 with great religious fervor and devotional songs. Some 130 students of different ages from the temple and other local schools participated in the puja and prayed to the Goddess of Knowledge for their academic success. Children were enthusiastic about the ceremony as they were given a special puja plate with Lord Ganesh and Ma Saraswati, Kumkum, Akshata and flowers. Pandit Anil Joshi Ji started Lord Ganapati and Ma Saraswati puja and asked the students to perform the same in their plates along with him. All children chanted Sarswati Beej Mantra, Stotra and Vandana along with him. It was spectacular to see all the youngsters in yellow dresses, uttariya, and their chanting with utmost devotion. Grayslake Hindu Mandir is running religious and Hindi language classes for the past four years on every 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month. The classes are organized by Sanjay and Parina Mehrotra, along with 28 dedicated teachers and 15 volunteers.
Students performing Saraswati Pooja
They run 14 classes for students in the group of 5 to 15 years. Bhagavatgita classes are also arranged for adults by Upadhyaya Ji. The temple is making all-out efforts to build a special connection between younger generation and the Hindu religion by teaching them all socio-cultural and spiritual values as well as languages. According to Pandit Joshi ji, Vasant Panchami marks a glorious occasion to seek
Ma Saraswati’s blessings to acquire secular and spiritual knowledge, adding that real education makes person more humble, compassionate and full of loving energy whereas knowledge makes man egoistic. President Harsh Kumar gave vote of thanks to all the volunteers and devotees. Finally, a grand Maha Mangalarati was performed by all. After the arati, the prasad was distributed to all by Neelakanth Anand and his team.
Is Social Security in danger? BY A STAFF WRITER ocial Security is a very well designed and maintained program. Who could ever oppose such a beneficial program? Well let’s see. The finance industry wants to privatize IRA accounts in order to profit from this lucrative pot of money that exists in the form of Social Security. In addition, the affluent sector of Americans maintain an interest in saving money through taxes. Numerous demonstrations and polls relay that the majority of Americas strongly oppose cuts in Social Security, however, the White House overlooks the public opinion in this regard. Leading news sources will portray Social Security as a burden on young Americans without regarding it as a safeguard for our country’s elderly and disabled. Democrat Senator Tom Harkin (Iowa) offers a sensible solution. It involves taxing the highest earners of our nation. Senator Elizabeth Warren mentioned in her speech how strongly she believes in the wrongful cuts on Social Security, as well as President Obama’s chained CPI (Cost of Price Increase) Cut, which ultimately dips into the pockets of Social Security over time.
S
Social activist and president (2013) of the Federation of Indian Associations Hina Trivedi was in India last month to attend the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi. During her visit, she met several prominent leaders and business entrepreneurs from India and other countries who had attended India’s flagship annual event to connect with its diaspora spread across the globe. She also had an opportunity to interact with the Bharatitya Janata Party’s Prime Ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with whom she discussed issues concerning non-resident Indians (NRIs) and ways to build strong communication bridges between NRIs and Indian politics
Society is located in downtown Chicago at 230 E. Ohio Street, Suite 120, Chicago, IL. (312) 640-2405 Eye Society LLC was founded in Chicago in 2007 by Dr. Tanvi Mago, O.D., F.A.A.O, with a mission focused on providing an unsurpassed quality of eye care through the use of comprehensive state-of the-art technology, highly-skilled doctors and a compassionate and professional clinical staff. Dr. Mago, founder and director of Eye Society, earned her Doctorate of Optometry degree at The New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Mago then completed a post-graduate residency program in primary eye care and ocular disease management at the New York Veterans Hospital, a State University of New York (SUNY) affiliate clinic.
Facebook post lands lawmaker’s aide in trouble
Marcie Malszycki
BY A STAFF WRITER
M
ADISON (WI) -- A legislative aide charged with voter fraud has admitted her voting a c t i v i t i e s o n Fa c e b o o k , according to court records associated with the investigation. The criminal complaint provides information found by an investigator with the Dane County District Attorney’s Office, in an election fraud case against Marcie Malszycki. She faces two counts. The complaint states Malszycki, in a facebook post dated November 2, 2010, wrote, “Just voted for Waker, Johnson, Kapanke, Huebsch and JB Vanhollen. Go Team!!!” Records show Malszycki lives in Madison, and when questioned in the post by a Madison neighbor about where she voted Malszycki responded, “Voted in Onalaska since I am living here.” The complaint details that Malszycki was living in Onalaska temporarily while working on a candidate’s campaign. It goes on to state Malszycki told an Onalaska police officer she had been staying with her parents, and that she told a poll worker she had been living with her parents for two months before voting. Malszycki says a poll worker informed her she could vote if her mother signed her registration form acknowledging Malsyzcki has been living there, which her mother did. The complaint also details evidence that Malszycki registered to vote at the polls on November 4, 2008 in Onalaska, using her parents’ address, despite living in her home in Madison a few months before. Work records show Malszycki took a leave of absence in the fall of 2008 and fall of 2010 to do campaign work. Malszycki currently works for State Rep. Warren Petryk, a Republican from Elvira. Rep. Petryk said in a statement: “The incident would have occurred prior to her working in my office. She is a valuable and excellent employee.”

‘Remaking a hit film quite tough’ Adopting a remake to local sensibilities is a challenge, says filmmaker Kammula
ANS, CHENNAI
F
ilmmaker Sekhar Kammula, who has remade Hindi blockbuster Kahaani in Telugu as Anaamika, says it is always challenging to remake a hit film in any language as it requires adapting to local sensibilities. “When you’re doing a frame-to-frame copy then a remake might be easy to execute but adapting a remake to local sensibilities is always a challenge, irrespective of the language it is being made in. ‘Anaamika’ is not a frame-to-frame copy of the original, it has been adapted to suit the local flavour,” Kammula told IANS. Nayanthara reprises the role of Vidya Balan in Anaamika, which was shot in Hyderabad. “The film is made in such a way that for all those who haven’t watched the original, it will appear as a different film. All those who have watched Kahaani will also connect with ‘Anaamika’ as it is made keeping in mind the local sensibilities,” he said. “I have made changes to ensure the audiences feel that the film is different from the original in many ways,” he added. While Vidya Balan played a pregnant woman in search of her missing husband in the original, Nayanthara will not be playing a pregnant character in Anaamika. “The film’s premise is about the protagonist’s search for her missing husband. I didn’t find the need to retain the pregnant part because my film is not a frame-to-frame copy. Nayanthara still had to work hard in her role because she doesn’t get to earn any sympathy for being pregnant,” added Kammula. The film, produced by Endemol India, also features Harshvardhan Rane.
Tamil version of ‘Lucia’ goes on floors CHENNAI: The yet-to-be-titled Tamil remake of critically acclaimed Kannada blockbuster Lucia was launched here on February 10, while the shooting of the remake, which features Siddharth in the lead, started from the next day. “We officially launched the film on February 10. The regular shooting starts from today and we plan to complete the film in one long schedule,” C.V Kumar, who will produce the film under his home banner Thirukumaran Entertainment, told IANS. Lucia was an independent film that was crowd-funded. It turned out to be
one of biggest low-budget hits in southern cinema last year. Debutant Prasad Ramar will helm the remake, which also features Deepa Pranidhi and Naren in important roles.
Another Koothu-P-Pattarai artist enters filmdom CHENNAI: After actors such as Pasupathy, Vimal, Vijay Sethupathi and Vidharth from renowned Tamil drama troupe Koothu-P-Pattarai joined Tamil cinema, the next entrant to the industry from the group is Sri Balaji. Sri will make his cinematic debut with forthcoming Tamil romantic-thriller Soorayaadal. “We were on the lookout for a newcomer and that’s when someone had told me about the theatre group. I happen to meet Sri there and was really impressed with his passion for cinema.
I didn’t do any screen test for him as I strongly believed that his theatre experience was enough,” film’s director Thamarai Kannan. Kannan has a lot of respect for the theatre group. “The fact that so many wonderful actors have come from this group explains its importance. It makes us understand that this place produces some of the finest artists and working with them will be every director’s delight. I have immense respect for the group,” he said.
Rajinikanth lauds ‘Goli Soda’ IANS, CHENNAI
A
fter impressing audiences and critics alike, recent Tamil hit Goli Soda has earned the appreciation of superstar Rajinikanth, who praised its makers for making an “astonishing” film with children. S.D. Vijay Milton directed the coming-of-age film about four children from Koyambedu mar-
N. Lingusamy, producer of “Goli Soda”, is on a high after receiving praise from Rajinikanth. “He congratulate me for backing an offbeat film. It was a proud moment for me as well as my production company. We spoke (on phone) for nearly an hour and he said that he has watched all the films made under our banner,” Lingusamy told IANS
‘I’m astonished how the film was made in a place like Koyambedu market, especially making those kids perform so well. I called up the director and congratulated him’ ket in the city. “I’m astonished how the film was made in a place like Koyambedu market, especially making those kids perform so well. I called up the director and congratulated him for the good work. I also wished him luck for his next venture,” Rajinikanth said in a statement.

‘Seemandhra people will reject Congress’ NEW DELHI: Six MPs from Seemandhra, who were expelled from Congress on February 11, said the party will have to pay a heavy price for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh against the people’s sentiments. The MPs not only predicted Congress’ defeat in the ensuing elections but also claimed that it would not even find candidates to contest the polls on its ticket. Stating that their goal is to stall
tabling of the Telangana bill in Parliament, the MPs said they would announce their future course of action after February 21. Congress expelled Sabbam Hari, G.V. Harsha Kumar, V. Arun Kumar, L. Kerala mulls bill to stop lavish weddings THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government will soon come up with a bill that will prevent ostentatious weddings where people flaunt their wealth, Social Welfare Minister M.K. Muneer said on February 10. Muneer told the state Assembly that the situation has reached such a “dangerous level” where weddings only mean flaunting of one’s wealth. “We are working out on how we can prevent this excessive flaunting of wealth on the occasion of weddings and it would be through a new law,” he said. Congress legislator C.P. Mohammed had earlier raised this issue through a submission.
He said people have reached a stage where they try to “wear a dress made of gold”, and that ostentatious weddings have become a law and order problem too.
Muneer said Pakistan’s Punjab province has a very strict law that prevents ostentatious weddings. When it comes to food during weddings in Kerala, people nowadays leave nothing to chance to have a gala time. At Christian weddings, lunch with biryani or fried rice costs as much as `600 a plate while at Hindu marriages the traditional “sadhya” (the 23-course vegetarian lunch with three-four types of payasam) costs a minimum of `150 per plate. People also appoint wedding planners and include a special music band, a decorated stage and special vehicles to bring the couple to the venue.

Easy-to-fall-for skin myths busted IANS, LONDON
T
here are many misconceptions related to skincare like wearing sunscreen everyday is too heavy or exfoliating regularly will ensure a clear skin. So it’s time to move away from such myths and get ready for a flawless skin. Here are some of the myths attached to skincare busted by experts at Proactiv brand, reports femalefirst.co.uk: Myth 1: Wearing sunscreen daily is too heavy for my oily complexion. Truth: To prevent damage or to help avoid a blemish outbreak, protecting your skin with a sunscreen should be part of your daily skincare routine. If you suffer with oily skin, try a lightweight formula underneath your make-up, or find a foun-
dation or tinted moisturiser with an SPF built in. Myth 2: To prevent blemishes you should completely strip away the oil from the skin. Truth: While there is no doubt that oily skin should be controlled to keep the complexion clear and shine-free, completely stripping the skin of all its natural oils can play even more havoc with blem-
ishes and spots. Myth 3: I should exfoliate regularly to ensure my skin stays clear. Truth: Exfoliating excessively can strip the skin of essentials oils and spread bacteria. Instead of a daily scrub opt for a much gentler exfoliant to keep your skin in a good condition. Myth 4: You shouldn’t use moisturiser on oily skin. Truth: Blemish-prone skin needs hydration too. In fact, drying out oily skin sends a signal to your body to produce even more oil; a nightmare for those who already suffer with problem skin. Myth 5: The only thing that will cure my eyes bags and dark circles is more sleep. Truth: A diet high in salt may also be the cause of bags under your eyes.

women with HIV The depression and anxiety symptoms add cognitive vulnerabilities but can be treated IANS, NEW YORK
I
n midlife women with HIV, anxiety stands out as having the greatest impact on thinking skills, shows new research. HIV infection is associated with modest deficits in multiple domains of cognitive function, even in women who regularly take their HIV medications. Anxiety particularly affects verbal
learning skills so treating anxiety may be key to improving the lives of midlife women with HIV. “These depression and anxiety symptoms add to those cognitive vulnerabilities but can be treated,” said Pauline M. Maki from University of Illinois at Chicago. Hot flashes, depression and most of all, anxiety, affect the thinking skills of midlife women with HIV. To understand this, the researchers studied data on 708

n a breakthrough, scientists have identified seven new genetic regions associated with type 2 diabetes. The genome-wide association study looked at more than 3 million DNA variants to identify those that have a measurable impact on risk of type 2 diabetes. By combining DNA data from many several individuals, scientists were able to detect, for the first time, regions where the effects on diabetes susceptibility are rather
HIV-infected and 278 HIV-uninfected midlife women. They found that the menopause-related thinking deficiencies are modest, limited to the time leading up to menopause and rebound after menopause. “Mental processing speed and verbal memory were more related to depression, anxiety and hot flashes in both HIVinfected and healthy women than the stage of menopause,” explained the study. It meant that menopause stage found to have little effect on cognitive abilities, said the study.
subtle. “Although the genetic effects may be small, each signal tells us something new about the biology of the disease,” said Anubha Mahajan of Oxford University. These findings may lead us to new ways of thinking about the disease, with the aim ultimately of developing novel therapies to treat and prevent diabetes, she added.
NEW YORK: Matters of the heart can actually influence your cardiovascular health, reveals research. A study from the University of Utah shows that the ways in which your spouse is supportive —- and how you support your spouse — can actually have significant bearing on your overall heart health. When both partners perceive the support they get from each other as ambivalent — that is, sometimes helpful and sometimes upsetting - each partner’s levels of coronary artery calcification (CAC) tend to be particularly high, said the findings. “There is a large body of epidemiological research suggesting that our
relationships are predictors of mortality rates, especially from cardiovascular disease,” explains Bert Uchino, psychological scientist at University of Utah. “But most prior work has ignored the fact that many relationships are characterised by both positive and negative aspects — in other words, ambivalence,” he added. Uchino and his colleagues Timothy Smith and Cynthia Berg explored how this complexity in relationships predicts cardiovascular health.
Your week ahead... Aries Just when you thought you were proceeding towards a decision about your dark secret or invisible role, the process stops. The strange thing about your situation is, nothing will actually be concluded until late March.
Taurus I see escalating chaos. It’s like walking through marshmallow while someone blows bubbles in your face. And whose fault is this? Not yours – all you did was deal with the friendship or the group that fate gave you.
Gemini Gemini, some aspect of your career (or other leading role in life) has become utterly confusing and confused. The British expression for this is ‘clear as mud’ which just about sums the situation up.
Cancer You now know just how utterly chaotic some corner of your life as a traveler, publisher, writer, teacher or student has become. What came to light last week has shown you how much cleaning up you have to do.
Leo You don’t have this many horoscope factors in the confusing sign of Pisces and get away with it for long. What you now know about your money, business, house, flat, possessions or charity has come as a revelation.
Virgo You appear to have wandered into the equivalent of thick fog with your former, current or potential partner. If the issue for you at the moment is not your ex, current or possible lover, it is most certainly about your enemy or rival.
(August1-7) Libra It is easy to understand why you want to sort out your daily workload, your regular lifestyle and your relationship with your body. During 2013 this zone of your horoscope was occupied by Neptune, Salacia and Chiron.
Scorpio What took place last year with your son, daughter, godchild or young relative now appears to have been even more confused than you imagined. In fact, what happened last week probably pulled you up short.
Sagittarius Hope you have been reading this column long enough to have been warned (back in January) about the forthcoming situation with your internet-based plans or your communication-heavy project.
Capricorn You will be so much better off, financially, in the second half of 2014 and first half of 2015 that you can almost shrug off the situation with your money, house, possessions, apartment, business or charity near Friday.
Aquarius Your backwards glance at 2013 last week revealed just how confused one person had been, in respect of the money, business, house, charity, possessions or apartment.
Pisces You now appear to be fully updated on all the ‘me’ issues hanging over from 2013 that you were not aware of before. In astrology, any time you get a stellium passing through Pisces you also have image or appearance questions to answer.
