SGMHS

A Message from the Principal Dear Mission Community, San Gabriel Mission High School is flourishing with amazing young women who are ready to be leaders in today’s world. Each day students are given the tools to learn what it means to be a woman of motivation, respect, depth, character, and integrity. It is the goal of the faculty and staff at SGMHS to educate the whole woman in academics, faith, and spirit. In a place that is filled with traditions, SGMHS students continue to learn how to live Christian lives by building a foundation with the Dominican and Claretian charisms. As the faith leaders of our community, the Vertitas Campus Ministry strives to teach the Dominican pillars of prayer, service, community, and study. As a community, we search for the truth in all we do. In doing so, we hope to preach the good news to those around us. The young women of Mission have paved the way in making their mark at the school. Our young women are active participants in student leadership through the Associated Student Body and Student Council as well as through their hours of dedication to the community through our Service Learning Program. Additionally, our student athletes have learned what it means to be leaders and sisters on a team. This year, our Soccer team achieved history for SGMHS with the school’s first California Interscholastic Federation Southern Regional Championship Division 5. Our students demonstrated their motivation and continuous fight on and off the field. San Gabriel Mission High School is truly a home to many. The Mission family shows it strengths in many ways. This year, our Mission family came together in support of each other and the community with the loss of our very own Sr. Mara Anne Palomares, O.P. ’57. Sr. Mara Anne’s legacy lives on in the many ways she has touched the lives of those at Mission. She was a real example of what it means to live a Christian life with the Dominican charism. It is a blessing to witness the growth of our young women each and every day at San Gabriel Mission High School. It is an honor to see our women become confident intellectually, physically, and spiritually. I am truly honored to send these women out into the world as women of Mission! God Bless,

Marielle Sallo, Ed.D. Principal

A Special Farewell

Sister Mara Anne Palomares, O.P. It is with heavy hearts that the San Gabriel Mission High School Community announces the passing of Sister Mara Anne Palomares, O.P. on February 20, 2018. Sister Mara Anne worked in the Development and Alumni Relations Office for over 6 years as well as in curriculum doing classroom observations. Sister was also a former principal of San Gabriel Mission Elementary School. Being an alum from Mission High herself, Class of 1957, Sister Mara Anne was a real asset in helping locate lost alumni. She was part of the Alumni Committee and assisted every year with the Scholarship Benefit Luncheon, including helping put baskets together for the silent auction. Sister also participated in Key Club meetings, offering students her encouragement in their endeavors. If there was a fundraiser at Mission, you could count on Sister to be there. Sister Mara Anne has touched many lives and we will never forget her kind and caring nature and her dedication to her Alma Mater. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Palomares family as well as the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. Sister would have been professed 60 years this May.

Softball: SGMHS’s Aeriel Lewandowski Signed with La Sierra University The Athletic Department at San Gabriel Mission High School would like to announce that on May 15th Senior Aeriel Lewandowski signed with La Sierra University in Riverside, CA. Aeriel made her announcement surrounded by faculty, coaches, family, teammates, friends and well-wishers. In talking with Aeriel, she credits alumna, Lauren Peters with inspiring her to achieve her goal. Aeriel was a freshman when Lauren, a senior, signed with Concordia College. Also, Aeriel is glad she will be attending La Sierra as it is a small school. Aeriel confided that she felt the same closeness she felt when she first visited Mission High and she knows this university is the perfect fit for her. Aeriel has played Club Softball for 1 year and has been on the varsity softball team at Mission High all 4 years. Her main position is 1st base, but she started as an outfielder. She plays for CASE Batbusters, CASE standing for character attitude, strength and excellence.

Aeriel’s strength and faith comes from her 7 year old cousin, Cisco, who passed away this year and her Uncle Oscar, who passed away in 2003. Both played the same sports she does and she was very close to both of them. Her number is 00 which was her uncle’s number while he played sports. Aeriel said, “I talk to my cousin while I’m playing and he helps me.” She is glad she will be in Riverside, as Aeriel will be closer to her little cousin Cisco who lived in San Bernardino. Her favorite quote is from the bible, Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Dr. Marielle Sallo, Principal at SGMHS said, “We are so proud of all that Aeriel has accomplished. She has exemplified what it means to be a Mission student with her motivation to pursue her dreams of playing college softball. We cannot wait to see her work at the collegiate level.”

SGMHS’s Senior Class Attended the 2018 National Latina Women’s Conference The entire senior class at San Gabriel Mission High School attended the 2018 National Latina Women’s Conference on May 4th thanks to donations from alumna professionals at USC. The Latina Women’s Conference “aims to empower high school and college age Latinas.” This year it was held at the Quiet Cannon Conference and Events Center. It was an all-day event that included educational workshops, an exhibit area and awards luncheon. The seniors wrote reflections of the day and what it meant to them to attend the Latina Women’s Conference and two seniors stood out. Gabby Abrego wrote, “In my opinion, the overall message of this conference was to educate high school students, predominantly females, about getting a higher level of education so they can be successful in the workforce one day. I saw how we

10

are the next generation of Latina women and we must educate ourselves about the struggles of previous Latina women in order to succeed in our own lives.” Another senior, Gabby Angel wrote, “The main message of the conference overall was to offer hope, awareness, and advice. I definitely felt that this conference allowed me to see how many successful Latina women are actually out there and don’t get recognized for how much hard work and passion they put into their jobs. I felt that the message was also about equality as something to always remember. Even if you are a woman, no matter what race, you should have the same opportunities in life to be successful.” The 2018 Latina Women’s Conference was truly an educational experience for the seniors at SGMHS. They learned “that no matter what or how many obstacles that you face, you must remain confident that this is all a part of God’s plan for where you are supposed to end up in life.”

on veterans and I will take it with me forever.” Valerie said, “I felt privileged simply to talk with these veterans because they sacrificed so much to serve our country. This experience has allowed me to realize that I should appreciate my time with others because we don’t know what tomorrow will bring.” Zoe commented about the veterans saying, “I truly felt honored to be speaking with them. It is not every day that I get to speak to such special individuals. It was fulfilling and interesting to learn about some of the veterans unique stories.” Mia said, I think that I definitely gained a better sense of how many veterans are active in my community. It taught me that it’s good to just take a break from my life and listen to these brave men and women talk about their stories and how they fought for our country.”

Local Veterans Make a Lasting Impression on SGMHS Seniors The City of San Gabriel hosted a Veterans Recognition Luncheon on Oct. 25th. The Senior Class Board from San Gabriel Mission High School was invited to the event. Gabriela Abrego, Valerie Corletto Lopez, Zoe Rivera and Mia Santillan were given the privilege of meeting and talking with many veterans who served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In their many discussions with the veterans, students discovered they had something in common with some of them; they all attended San Gabriel Mission High School. Some of those veterans who were also alumni were: Charles Henkels ’56, Alvin Sanchez ‘60, Jose Valdez ‘66, Mike Valdez ‘68, Phil Valdez ‘’63 and Ralph Valdez’58. The close-up-and-personal experience with all of the veterans made a lasting impression on the students. Gabriela commented, “What I will take from this experience is to be more grateful for my freedom because there are men and women putting their lives at risk so I can go to school and make something of myself. The experience truly changed my perspective

SGMHS Scholarship Benefit Luncheon Huge Success On Saturday May 19th the school auditorium at San Gabriel Mission High School was transformed for their Annual Scholarship Benefit Luncheon honoring distinguished alumni. This year the honorees were Alba Quezada ’71 and Suzanna Guzman ’73. Also, this year a writing scholarship was established in honor of Sister Mara Anne Palomares, O.P. class of 1957 who passed away on February 20, 2018.

Attendees at the event were entertained by SGMHS students with a Bollywood dance number from their 2018 Spring Sing, “A Trip Around the World.” The renowned honorees, Alba and Suzanna, thrilled the audience with their musical talents, with Yoyo Sin, a senior at SGMHS, as their pianist. They performed numbers from “West Side Story, “My Fair Lady” and more. It was an unforgettable afternoon. The silent auction and raffle were extremely successful.
