AND THE WINNERS ARE...

This year marks our 17th Best Of San Joaquin County list, celebrating the food, stores, services and people that make our county great. It’s one of our mostread and most-beloved issues, and we cherish it because it’s an extra opportunity to celebrate those around us making a difference. It’s a tradition we don’t plan on stopping.

This year, the list stays true to our Best Of format—for the most part. We list the first, second, and third place winners in categories across food, drinks, shopping, entertainment, health, services, parenting, weddings, and home. Some of the winners are mainstays on our list, taking home countless accolades over the years, others are popping back onto our list after missing out previously, and others still are appearing for the first time, either because it’s the first time they’ve gotten enough votes to claim the coveted prize or because they are a brand-new business.

We encourage you to not only read through the winner’s lists, but also take them seriously. Use this feature as your annual guide to the Best Of San Joaquin County. Next time you’re craving Chinese food, pick a place from the top three. Looking for family plans on Saturday night? Check out the entertainment section for fresh ideas. Our “bests” aren’t chosen by our editorial team; they are chosen by you, our readers. And who better to trust than your neighbors?

Happy reading!

SHELBY YOUNG RETURNS TO LODI HOUSE NEARLY 20 YEARS LATER

Shelby Young is a dynamic leader who could be at the helm of any nonprofit. But, most appropriately, she is with Lodi House, the women and children shelter she helped to found in 1999.

SJMAG.COM | JULY 2023 37
the COMMUNITY
 BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON

Shelby grew up in Lodi and was involved in community service from a young age. Her journey to Lodi House began during college when she spent a summer interning at Lodi’s Field and Fair Day at Hutchins Street Square. Here, she discovered her talent of making a difference while building relationships and working with her community. Shortly after graduation, Shelby returned to Lodi to take the position of director at LOEL Senior Center. Soon thereafter, she was recruited to get Lodi House started in 1999. Shelby says, “I was honored to be part of bringing this vision to life because at the time there were no shelters for women and children in Lodi.”

Shelby stepped away from Lodi House as it was preparing to open to prioritize her family but was

drawn back to the organization in 2016 to continue the important work she has started. “I never imagined that after such a long hiatus I would have had the opportunity to be part of Lodi House again,” says Shelby. “It has been an incredible journey filled with challenges and successes that have transformed me, deepened my faith, and overall made me a better human being.”

Lodi House is specifically dedicated to helping women and their children who are in crisis. After moving into their own bedrooms, the routines of Lodi House are adopted and structure is established. Schedules for meals,

chores, bedtimes, and curfews are followed, plus sobriety from all substances, and a healthy set of boundaries with relationships in their life that have proven unsafe. As families stabilize, Lodi House staff establishes goals to ensure kids are doing well in school or childcare, connecting to professional counseling, helping mothers find and maintain employment, and setting financial goals to aid in moving toward independence.

“Once mothers begin working and saving money, much of the support that Lodi House provides is focused on encouraging and developing accountability to achieve their goals of balancing work and family life, remaining diligent in their financial management, and following through on their steps toward securing permanent housing,” Shelby says.

After four-to-six months, and when women are ready to graduate from Lodi House, they have the opportunity to apply to the transitional housing program or move into other housing and become life-long alumni members. Shelby explains, “Lodi House serves women with children through our three stages of programming, which includes a four-to-six month intensive shelter program, one to two year supportive transitional housing program, and our lifetime alumni support network.”

Building relationships is paramount at Lodi House and sets it apart from other shelter programs and services. “We see every person as valuable to our community. We want to get to know those who are interested in being part of Lodi House and learn how they can best fit into the Lodi House family,” says Shelby.

Lodi House’s focused program includes five women and their children closely monitored by staff. Having a small number of guests allows Lodi House staff to build trusting intentional relationships. Employment resources, including job connections through Lodi House work partnerships, are provided.

Last year, Lodi House piloted its first year-long job training program at the Lodi House Thrift Boutique.

To support, visit Lodi House Thrift Store Boutique at 221 W. Lodi Ave., to drop off unwanted items, meet the staff, and find out how to get involved with the dynamic nonprofit that helps some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

LOCAL ROOTS 11 MOVIES all STOCKTONIANS SHOULD WATCH

Just call it Hollywood North Jeff Bridges, Harrison Ford, and Robin Williams have all starred in movies with scenes filmed in Stockton. And that’s just the start for Brick City’s move culture.

Stockton breeds superstars, turning out notable names like Justin Roiland (the creator of Rick & Morty) and Janet Leigh (of Psycho fame). Even Jaime Lee Curtis attended University of the Pacific. But it isn’t just the talent stemming from Stockton that gives it a Hollywood presence. The city itself has been home to many scenes filmed in well-known movies.

UOP is one of the most notable Hollywood backdrops from the Central Valley. Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones taught at fictional Marshall College, which appeared as UOP in

three installments of the series; Robin Williams was at fictional Medfield College in Flubber, which was really UOP, as well; and Dead Man on Campus featured exterior shots of the campus for its film. The exterior of Knoles Hall appeared in Dennis Quaid’s 1980s sci-fi/horror flick dubbed Dreamscape. While Inventing the Abbots supposedly took place in Pennsylvania, the Stockton college was once again the pictured institution.

UOP aside, some of the biggest actors in Hollywood have stepped foot in Stockton. Paul Newman filmed parts of Cool Hand Luke here, using several landmarks near the Delta for its locations. Charlie Sheen also filmed on the Delta for his 1990s war spoof film Hot Shots Part Deux. Lesser-known films Coast to Coast (1980) and The

Great Race (1965) also feature Stockton. The most Stockton movie ever to be filmed here was Fat City. The screenplay was adapted from a novel written by local Leonard Gardner and this time Stockton was used as the filming location because it was also named the setting in the book. Jeff Bridges was notably a part of the 1972 film, which used backdrops including the Stockton Civic Auditorium and Zuckerman Farms, in addition to downtown. Some of the film’s other locations have since closed including the old macaroni factory and El Dorado Hotel.

All the King’s Men was perhaps the most decorated film ever to come out of Stockton. The 1949 winner of three academy awards featured Hotel Stockton, the old courthouse and jail, Atherton Island, the Stockton waterfront, City Hall, and more.

COFFEE with KEVIN CHASE

FIREFIGHTER BY DAY, QUIZMASTER BY NIGHT

As captain of Engine Four, Kevin Chase has been extinguishing fires with the Stockton Fire Department for 16 years. But what you may not know is Kevin has an entirely different persona outside of the firehouse. Affectionately known as Quizmaster Kevin in the Lodi community, he hosts trivia nights at breweries and wineries, providing entertainment for locals and visitors.

We sat down with Chase at House of Coffees for a strong cup of coffee after a long shift at the firehouse to ask him how Quizmaster Kevin came to be and how his trivia hobby has turned into so much more for the married father of three.

The trivia gig started a few years ago when his friend Jenn Phillips began hosting game nights at her coffee shop, House of Coffees.

“I’d mentioned to her that I loved going to pub trivia in Sacramento and suggested it would be a great idea for her to do it at her shop… She asked if I’d host one and that’s how it all began.”

As Kevin started picking up more venues, he felt the act needed something more. Enter DJ Double D, Kevin’s fellow firefighter, Darren. The two were hired at SFD together in 2006 and have been great friends ever since. Darren had DJ’d on the side for a long time and thought adding a live DJ to trivia nights would take it to the next level.

For Chase, the coolest part of hosting trivia nights is engaging with the crowd throughout the night. “I don’t take it lightly that people made plans, hired babysitters, and got their group of friends together to come listen to me ask random questions for a couple hours.”

“I’d mentioned to her that I loved going to pub trivia in Sacramento and suggested it would be a great idea for her to do it at her shop… She asked if I’d host one and that’s how it all began.”

Chase credits his wife, Melissa, for keeping him grounded. She also acts as his pseudo-manager because, according to Chase, her organizational skills are

far superior to his. Of their three kids— Charlie, 12, Juliette, 9, and Nolan, 7—Charlie is most interested in the family business, becoming somewhat of a trivia buff himself, and leading his school to a firstplace victory in a regional trivia competition called “Quiz Bowl.” Catch a Trivia Night with Quizmaster Kevin and Darren D at Michael David Winery on September 9 or at Calivirgin Winery and Olive Mill on December 1. You can also find him on Instagram at QuizmasterKevin.

FAMILY Promise

BECAUSE EVERY CHILD DESERVES A HOME

When you imagine homelessness, what do you see? If it’s a single adult living on the streets or a levy that comes to mind, you’re not alone. Jory Gwasdoff, executive director of Family Promise of San Joaquin, however, sees a more complicated picture.

He gives me a number. “5,382. That’s the number of homeless youth counted in the homelessness census by the Homelessness Liaison of San Joaquin County Office of Education.” While somewhat staggering, it’s also incomplete.

Youth without an address and youth too young to attend school aren’t counted.

Family Promise is based on a national model with success stories across the country nearly 40 years old. Its San Joaquin chapter is working to make a meaningful dent in San Joaquin County homelessness.

Jory continues, “We serve the hidden population of San Joaquin County; parents who’ve been couch surfing and trying to protect their kids from the trauma of the shelters.” In traditional homeless shelters, families are usually separated by gender and age. Men and boys over 12 years old go to

their own shelters. Women, their daughters, and their sons under 12 usually go to a family shelter.

“Parents in the program are expected to care for their children when they’re here at the day center,” Jory says. These are rooms designed with families in mind. One is a laundry room with a bright playroom next to it. Everyone wakes in the morning in a warm bed. School-age children get picked up by the bus from the day center and attend school while their parents go out into the community to seek services and jobs. Youth get dropped off at the day center when school is out and at the end of the day families are transported to host congregations that provide them with a meal, recreation, and a safe place to sleep for the night.

The community care

built into the Family Promise model is what makes for more connected–and successful–families, which is why the Family Promise team is so dedicated to their model, placing an unwavering emphasis on keeping families together for the betterment of all involved.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY’S BIGGEST EXPORTS

Abundance

Instead of asking what can you grow in San Joaquin County, it may be easier to ask what can’t you grow? The agricultural hub has long been associated with fruitful harvests, ranging from wine grapes and cattle to nuts, fruits, and vegetables. No matter how you slice it, it’s clear our county is bursting with big ripe fruits—and we’re not exporting it all either. The proximity between towns and farms allows fresh produce to land on the table of local restaurants, supporting a farm to fork system that promises fruitful bounties and healthful benefits for all who live and work in SJC.

52 JULY 2023 | SJMAG.COM

Stone fruit

The first question many ask is what is a stone fruit? If you want to get technical, it’s a thin-skinned and fleshy fruit surrounding a single hard shell (or pit). Common varieties include peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, mangoes, and lychees—to name a few. In all there are more than 60 varieties of stone fruit, and John Gibson, owner of Golden Bear Ranches, grows many on his Central Valley farm.

While John sells and ships much of his annual harvest internationally, that’s not true for the stone fruit. Anything he grows in this category

is reserved for local restaurants and stores. This ensures the stone fruit grown on site is super fresh when it reaches the consumer, since it doesn’t need to travel far. John stumbled into growing stone fruit by request of restauranters. While he was supplying restaurants, including eight to ten local establishments as well as French Laundry in Napa Valley, chefs started asking for varieties of the fruit they couldn’t find in stores. Because he plants,

harvests, and hand delivers all of his product, he had a lot of one-on-one time with chefs who could tell him what was in demand, or hard to get. Many may be surprised to hear that nuts like pistachios and almonds as well as raspberries, blackberries, cherries, and coconuts are all stone fruits, too.

SJMAG.COM | JULY 2023 53

Grapes

Grapes are one of the most celebrated crops coming out of SJC, especially in Lodi, Galt, and vineyards in between. But while we all love a crisp sauvignon blanc or spicy sangiovese, not all of the grapes grown here ever make it into your glass. The focus is on more than vino, with many farms growing a variety of flavorful grapes made for the table, however wine grapes are still high on the priority list.

Grape vineyards date back to the 1850s in the Lodi AVA, which is one reason why we can claim old vine zinfandels amongst our varietals. They first grew alongside riverbanks, which is still true of some vineyards today—just look at Mokelumne Hill, a sub-AVA of Lodi.

J&M farms has old vine zinfandel, chardonnay, and albariño in its portfolio, while Co-Owner Matt Manna harvests several other varietals with his family businesses, Acampo Ag Service and Manna Ranch. “His wheelhouse has been the wine grape side of things in all aspects,” his partner, Joe, says.

SWEET FACTS ABOUT GRAPES

The Lodi AVA boasts seven sub-AVAs.

More than 85 wineries exist in the LodiWoodbridge area.

The region yields more than 600,000 tons of grapes on an average year, making it a higher producer than Napa and Sonoma combined.

Most wine grapes don’t taste great.

There are around 10,000 varieties of grapes, including table grapes and wine grapes.

Grapes have been linked to supporting eye health and heart health as well as aiding the body in managing blood sugar, boosting brain power, and keeping you healthy thanks to all of the included antioxidants.

Black and red grapes are considered the “healthiest” grapes to consume.

54 JULY 2023 | SJMAG.COM

SWEET FACTS ABOUT CHERRIES

Cherries are technically a type of stone fruit.

A typical cherry season in the Central Valley lasts from mid-May to early June.

Cherries are the last trees to bloom and the first to harvest amongst popular fruits.

The Linden Cherry Festival was held on May 20 this year at Linden Elementary school.

Cherries are nutrientdense, rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, can boost exercise recovery, and can improve heart health, symptoms associated with gout and arthritis, and improve sleep quality.

Cherries

When locals think of cherries, they tend to think of Linden, known both for its annual festival and the pink cherry blossoms that bloom every spring. John likes cherries for their seasonality. “When they’re on, they’re on,” he says of growing the crop on his 150-acre farm.

While cherries are amongst his favorites to grow, they aren’t the easiest to harvest. John calls cherries temperamental, and because the season is only six to eight weeks in total, you have to be really dialed in to produce a good harvest.

“I’m a firm believer in you get back what you put into the soil,” John says, which is one reason he decided to dedicate his time and effort into transforming his land into a certified organic farm. The nutrient-dense soil created through constant composting and care results in better tasting cherries.

The elongated winter and extra rain this year will delay cherry season, according to John. He expects the crops to come out about two weeks later than usual, and this will affect when locals see them in stores and restaurants. That’s in large part because local farms, like Golden Bear Ranch, are the ones supplying the fruit. John’s cherries wind up on shelves of local grocers and in restaurants such as Podesto’s, Pietro’s, Guantonios, Wine & Roses, and Market Tavern. The rest are shipped international.

John isn’t the only farmer invested in cherries. Joe and Matt are turning out the crop, as well, but it looks a little different for them. In addition to getting fruit local, they truck to cities like Bakersfield and Gustine to harvest their cherries, as well. “This is the latest season on record due to the great winter we had,” Joe says. “It’s been a mess for our retailers who need to fill the produce department… but I feel it’s been a blessing for us because we have had such great weather leading into harvest.” When California cherry harvest drops off, Joe and Matt will take their operation to the northwest, where cherry harvests tend to happen later.

SJMAG.COM | JULY 2023 55

Almonds

Did you know that almonds are California’s main agricultural export? More than grapes and avocadoes, the state’s farmland is reserved for making 100% of the world’s commercial supply of almonds and 80% of all almonds in the world are grown in the golden state.

While several counties throughout California have almond orchards, San Joaquin Valley is responsible for much of that growth. Expansion on the middle and southern parts of the county have led almond production to around 2.8 billion pounds in statewide production. Surrounding counties like Kern, Merced, Fresno, Madera, and Stanislaus also have a lot of almond farms.

While almonds didn’t originate here, the area started ramping up production in the 1960s, producing about 20% of the world’s production then. In all, there are 1.25 million acres of almond orchards in the state.

Locally, farmers including Aaron Shinn of Round Valley Ranches, John from Golden Bear Ranches, and Louie Larossa of Mid Valley Agriculture all grow almonds.

NUTTY FACTS ABOUT ALMONDS

Almonds are used to create all sorts of dairy- and gluten-free foods by using almond flour, almond milk, and almond butter. Plus, it can be used as an alternative to pine nuts in pesto.

Almonds are closely related to peaches, cherries, and apricots. The part of the almond we eat is the seed, and the fleshy part is inedible.

Don’t throw out old almonds! Store them in the fridge for up to two years of snacking.

Every 100 grams of almonds boast 21.1 grams of protein, making them one of the most protein-rich nuts on the market.

Almonds are known for boosting energy, which makes them a great pre- or postworkout snack.

56 JULY 2023 | SJMAG.COM

THE WASP & THE FIG

It may sound like folklore but John ensures us this little tidbit is true. If you’ve ever heard that a wasp pollinates a fig by going inside of it, the storyteller wasn’t lying to you. What’s even crazier is the wasp dies inside of the fig and the fig absorbs its carcass. So, when you’re eating a fig, you’re also kind of eating a wasp—or at least part of it.

SJMAG.COM | JULY 2023 57

Olives

Olives grow well in Mediterranean climates, which is why San Joaquin County offers prime real estate for the venture. It’s the moderate temperatures that help olives thrive, with few days of freezing temperatures and few days over 100 degrees.

One of the area’s largest growers of olives is the Coldani family, owners of Calivirgin and Calivines. While Mike and Julie Coldani originally planned to get into the wine growing game, they landed on olives for economic reasons. First, grape sales were bleak when they started the venture and second, the olive trellis system only required about half of the start-up costs when compared to grape growing. “We took a gamble and jumped in with both feet and planted 100 acres at the time intending to sell most of the fruit to a larger company and reserve some for a hobby at the local farmers market,” Mike says. However, they never ended up selling a single fruit, deciding instead to use all of their bounty to grow their brand of olive oils. “Today we are sold across the U.S. and finished construction on our new tasting room in 2021 with a staff of over 30 people,” he says.

SAVORY FACTS ABOUT OLIVES

You can’t simply pluck and eat an olive. They won’t hurt you, but they are bitter and often have an unpleasant texture.

Only 10% of olives make it to your table as a whole product. The other 90% are turned into olive oil.

Olive trees date back 20-40 million years, making them almost as old as some dinosaurs.

Olive trees can live

If you want to learn more about growing olives, you can always take a tour with the Coldanis. Mike says most people are surprised to hear that, much like grapes, there are more than 100 varietals of olives and they all have different profiles. “Much like a pinot noir grape won’t produce a wine that tastes like a cabernet; there are olives that produce lighter bodied oil or more robust,” he says. Another fun fact? “All olives start out green and then turn purple then black with maturity.”

To capture the most health benefits, the Coldanis harvest in midOctober while olives are still green. While they produce less oil at this stage, they have more nutrients. In November, when the olives start to turn color, a second harvest is completed and oils are made by blending the product from both months.

58 JULY 2023 | SJMAG.COM

Heirloom tomatoes

When John thinks about growing tomatoes, he says it’s the micro side of his farm. Large harvests of cherries end up all over the world (macro), while the tomatoes stay local (micro). “I get to have that personal relationship with the chefs and our stores,” he says about keeping the crop local. “You really get to deal with the chefs on a personal note… you really get to see the finished product.”

The Central Valley’s robust farms are what helps this region thrive as a farm to fork destination. So many local chefs and restaurants work with local farmers to ensure what’s landing on your plate is as fresh as it can be. Instead of waiting for an overseas shipment, Lodi establishments plate their heirloom tomatoes from John on the same day they are harvested.

SAVORY FACTS ABOUT HEIRLOOM TOMATOES

Heirloom tomatoes have an impressive pedigree. The term is used to indicate that the fruit was grown from seeds passed down for generations.

If you save seeds from an heirloom tomato and plant them, you will be able to grow a new tomato plant. This is not true of all types of tomatoes.

Heirloom tomatoes can come from seeds dating back up to 100 years.

Heirloom tomatoes come in a variety of colors and those colors indicate which antioxidants are most prevalent in that specific fruit.

Tomatoes are fruits, even though they are often mistaken for vegetables. The mix-up is often associated with the savory qualities of tomatoes.

Pears

For J&M Farms, pears are a main export (in addition to cherries and wine grapes). Pears aren’t always one of the biggest crops we hear about coming out of SJC, but the science suggests it is an ideal location for pear harvests thanks to the hot summers and moist, well-drained soils. Pears routinely struggle most with spring frosts, so growing them in colder climates is a no-go.

Much like cherries, pear trees harvest early in California, which means the pears on your grocery store shelves and in nearby restaurants will be freshest in early July. Of course, sweet, juicy pears will be available later in the season, as well, they just aren’t likely coming from the farms next door.

SWEET FACTS ABOUT PEARS

There are more than 3,000 varieties of pears in the world.

Oregon and Washington grow the most pears, but it’s West Coast climates where they really thrive, making California a good home for the produce, too.

Pears are technically more closely related to roses than many other fruits.

Pears are often ripened off of the tree.

It’s not just the fruit that has a good use. Pear tree wood is routinely used in the creation of musical instruments.

BEST CHINESE TAKE-OUT

Newer isn’t always better. Chop, Chop in Lodi has a storied history, one dating back to 1967 when it first opened. Described best as a hole-in-the-wall serving some of the area’s most delicious Chinese take-out (just ask our readers), Chop, Chop is the epitome of family owned. Chinese fried chicken is the menu’s stand-out item, but it’s not the only dish worth ordering up. Other favorites include chow mein, fried rice and sweet and sour pork. 910

BEST SEAFOOD

Bud’s Seafood Grille consistently wins the top spot for Best Seafood, and for good reason. Specializing in chowder, seafood, pasta, and a variety of burgers and other entrees, the casual Lincoln Center spot is great for outdoor seating when the weather is right.

314 Lincoln Center, Stockton Captain Crab , coming in third place, is new to our list, in large part because it opened just two years ago, specializing in Louisiana-style seafood. Since opening,

BEST OF DRINKS

Ready to get your sip on? From beer and wine to coffee and tea, we’ve rounded up the best drink spots in SJC. When it comes to beer, Valley Brew is proving it’s worth its weight in hops. The long-time Stockton favorite brews its own brand and took home gold for both Best Brewery and Best Craft Beer Pub/Ber Menu, so you know it’s good.

In Lodi, it’s wine that reigns supreme. With one of the most robust AVAs in the state and more than 60 wineries in all, let’s just say nabbing a spot on our list is kind of a big deal. Even with all of the competition out there, there were a few standouts. Peltier Winery took home the gold for Best Winery and Mettler Vineyard was awarded second in two categories—Best Winery and Best Tasting Room. The Best Bloody Mary category is a competitive one; there are a LOT of contenders in San Joaquin County. Every year we have some variation in this list, but the expansive options at Market Tavern tend to grab our readers’ attention frequently while American Waffle Diner isn’t showing up for the first time either.

Next time you’re not sure where to spend a summer Saturday, consult our list for the ‘best’ places to get your drink on.

BEST OF HEALTH

Being healthy has a lot of definitions. Skin health, dental health, mental health… and they all require their own slew of appointments. Whether you’re suffering from allergies or need a new place to tone your muscles, there’s a business for that.

Just like the rest of the categories in our ‘Best Of,’ we’ve chosen the most important ones to represent SJC, and then asked our faithful readers to share their opinions. Gone are the days of googling and reading anonymous reviews before you pick your next dentist. Instead, you can lean on the advice of your neighbors.

Our categories in the health section are varied, but some standouts have received multiple honors, nonetheless. Ben Mackie Fitness took home gold for

Best CrossFit Studio and also snagged a bronze for Best Health Club; Dr. Lester Low is pulling double duty, earning a silver for Best Cosmetic Dentist and bronze for Best Pediatric Dentist; and Martin Dentistry took home awards in both categories as well with a bronze in the former and a silver in the latter. Brookside Optometric Group, Kids Care Dental, In-Shape Health Clubs, Twin Arbors Private Sports Club, and Now & Zen Yoga Studio also got two wins each.

Want to know who else took home first, second, and third place? Well, the ballots are in and we’ve got the dish! Read on for San Joaquin Magazine’s best health professionals and businesses for 2023.

Whether you’ve snagged an appointment with the founder himself, or you’re on the schedule of one of his trusted staff, either way, you can rest easy knowing your teeth are in good hands.

BEST ORTHODONTIST

We’ve long been fans of Dr. Samra’s community involvement, using both his orthodontic skills and his network to benefit those in need. The main crux of Samra Orthodontics is its ability to make orthodontia affordable for all, so kids can get the straight teeth they need. It’s more than a cosmetic choice; straight teeth actually help kids keep their mouths healthy into adulthood. Treating both children and adults in his Stockton office, Dr. Samra is dedicated to the grind, but mostly he’s dedicated to helping those in need. 1110 W. Robinhood Dr., Stockton

BEST OF HOME

Home sweet home. A person’s house is their oasis—or at least it should be—and that makes skimping on any decision hard to swallow. From the inner workings of your house that lend to comfort (think solar, HVAC, and water filtration) to the more decorative decisions that evoke your personal style and taste (flooring, furniture, paint), every inch of a remodel should be considered with the utmost care.

Our home category winners tend to operate across categories, often creating a one-stop-shop for many of your related needs. Classic Design Interiors and C.R. Porter both came out as big winners this year, taking home a top three designation in more than one category—and it’s not the first time! Other companies offer a more niche service, such as HVAC sales, servicing, and repair or custom blind creation.

Whether you are purchasing a new home and need advice on which builder will offer the best bang for your buck or you’re redoing a kitchen that needs a serious update (and more creature comforts), there’s a category for that. So, before you pick up the sledgehammer, grab a phone instead, and give a call to some of the neighborhood’s ‘best.’

BEST REAL ESTATE AGENT

When it comes to the real estate business, Lance McHan has done it all. He started as an appraiser in 2000 and later became an agent in 2015. When he dipped his toes back into the real estate market after a housing crash-induced hiatus, Lance vowed to be the type of agent he didn’t see enough in the industry. With a friendly approach to sales and a team mentality, he’s found success even when local inventory was slim, and now, as the market settles, he’s poised to take it on without losing focus on what matters most—the client. BEST OF PARENTING

Let’s face it, you’re not a regular parent—you’re a cool parent. And how else will you maintain that stellar status than being in-the-know on the best kids activities and destinations? Have no fear—San Joaquin Magazine’s ‘Best Of Parenting’ list is here! From the best schools to the most coveted dance studios, our list offers a little something for every kid in SJC.

From the day they are born to the day they graduate high school, it’s your job to ensure both their happiness and safety, and our list covers businesses that serve children birth to adulthood. Start by capturing those special moments with a newborn session through Heather Jean Photography (a mainstay on our list of family photographers) then enroll your child in the best martial arts, gymnastics, dance, and swim classes. Before you know it, you’ll be signing them up for preschool at West Valley Christian, grade school at Aspire Stockton Secondary Academy, and high school at St. Mary’s for the ‘best’ education from start to finish.

Every step of the way, San Joaquin Magazine readers are here to help by promoting their favorite destinations for all things kid, helping your child be both the most stylish and well-connected kid on the block.

The school has an impressive reputation dating back to 1876, acting as a co-educational college preparatory school in Stockton. From academics to arts to athletics, the school shines, and graduating seniors have moved on to impressive college institutions as well to continue their pursuit of all. BEST OF PLAY

When you have free time, how do you spend it? One of our favorite aspects of living in San Joaquin County is that we can play where we live—no need to leave the county for wholesome family fun, or an adults-only night on the town.

When it comes to hanging out in Stockton, we’re loving the newish FED, with its extensive menu of elevated bar food, its late night drink menus, a busy calendar of events, and more—it seems there is always something to do at FED. But that’s just the beginning for locals looking for activities in SJC. From museums to golf courses, art galleries to hotels, you can have your own little staycation in Lodi or choose a postwork activity in Stockton for you and your friends.

We see some repeat winners on our play list this year, including Brookside Country Club for private golf course, Swenson’s for public golf, and Wine & Roses for favorite hotel. Jackson Rancheria is also always in the mix when it comes to the best nearby casino, so we know readers are headed there when they want to gamble and let loose. Or perhaps they are sticking close to home, keeping their money local with a trip to Kings Card Club in Stockton.

Surprise, surprise—Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort is still snagging the top spot. Located in Jackson, Calif., a three-star hotel, full casino, and an award-winning restaurant make for a fun getaway for folks 18 and older. In all there are more than 1,700 video games including slots, Keno, and poker and 32 exciting table games.

12222 New York Ranch Rd., Jackson

There is also a new kid on the block. Did you know Sky River Casino, a 100,000-square foot gaming complex, is located just down the road in Elk Grove? With 2,000 slot machines and more than 80 gaming tables, plus a 12-table poker room, the towering casino is new on the scene, debuting on our Best Casino list at No. 2. While the gaming part of the project is open (since August 2022), it’s only the beginning. The complex also features 17 food and drink options, including a steakhouse, pub, and Chinese restaurant, and a hotel is on the horizon, boasting 302 rooms, a pool, spa, and fitness center laid out over 12 stories. 1 Sky River Pkwy., Elk Grove

Rounding out the list is our very own Kings Card Club in Stockton. The local hotspot boasts a high-end restaurant and bar, six game types, and 22 tables including Pai Gow, poker, and black jack, plus 72 televisions to catch the next sporting event or UFC fight and live entertainment every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. 6111 West Ln., #103, Stockton

BEST OF SERVICES

You’ve heard of Angie’s List—well, when it comes to identifying the best service providers throughout San Joaquin County, we think we have the jump on the web platform. Our ‘Best Of Services’ list is created by those who live and work in San Joaquin County, and if you ask us, their opinions are worth their weight in gold.

Perhaps you’ve gotten yourself in a pickle. Well, whether your car needs a touch-up or you’ll need a lawyer by your side, our team of experts (aka you) have provided not one, not two, but three options for each. The list goes on, including recommendations for animal shelters, banks, hair salons, and more. It’s like asking your best friend for the number to her insurance agent, except you have the backing of hundreds if not thousands of “friends” who can vouch for their quality.

In this category, we saw an impressive number of wins for Sycamore Lane Kennels We also have some repeat winners, such as Angelina’s Spaghetti House, Bank of Stockton, Parkwoods Cleaners, POMP Salon, and Iacopi, Lenz & Co. From accountants to veterinarians, we have you covered A-Z (well A-V)

The Secret to Pho?

IT’S ALL HOW YOU SIMMER THE BROTH…

“A lot of restaurants cut corners with their broth and skip the very first step in a worthy pho,” - Steven Vo

RESTAURANTS | WINE | DRINKS | SWEETS
EATING WELL
 BY SARAH STEFFENS / D DAN HOOD

It was a long-time dream for brothers Steven and Rome Vo to own a pho restaurant. After years of working in the restaurant industry as dish washers, table waiters, and chefs, they were ready to step out on their own and open Pho Island in June of 2022.

Pho Island is Stockton’s home for delicious, quality Vietnamese cuisine, centered on classic dishes featuring eggs, pork, beef, chicken, seafood, tofu, and plenty of fresh, in-season vegetables. Popular dishes include sides of rice and glass noodles (soft and transparent rice noodles), and often the main dish is soup. One of the most popular soups in Vietnamese cuisine is pho (pronounced fuh).

Pho is the national dish of Vietnam, where it is sold everywhere from upscale restaurants to street corners to your grandmother’s kitchen table. In the last century, pho has also gained popularity around the world. The dish traditionally consists of beef broth, rice noodles, spices, herbs, and thinly sliced meat (often beef, but also chicken, seafood, and tofu).

“I love pho,” says Steven.

“And we are very proud of our pho here at Pho Island.”

The Vo brothers begin with creating the broth to use as the soup base. “A lot of restaurants cut corners with their broth and skip the very first step in a worthy pho... but we know the broth is the

126 JULY 2023 | SJMAG.COM wine & dine

most important part of pho. We start with high-quality beef bones and simmer them overnight with ingredients such as ginger, onion, and mushroom for a delicious umami flavor.”

“Umami” literally means “essence of deliciousness,” and the Vo brothers’ broth is exactly that. Added to their broth is meat of your choice and lots of tasty garnishes, such as scallions, onions, cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, chili peppers, lime wedges, fish sauce, and hot chili sauce—to name a few. A lot of the fun of eating pho is in customizing it to taste exactly as you please. Endless are the ways you can fancy up your pho, including making it vegetarian. The Vo brothers offer a vegan broth that they take pride in, formulated for all those preferring to abstain from meat. It’s piled with veggies and herbs, an experience you will want to savor.

Pho Island offers more than pho. They also serve other traditional Vietnamese

dishes, including grilled ribeye (try it with their garlic rice and chicken broth), chicken wings (in flavors such as salt and pepper, mango habanero, and Vietnamese fish sauce), and unique dishes like grilled oysters. There is even an American-inspired kids’ menu for picky eaters, although the Vo brothers have a feeling that the kids in your group will come to love the traditional flavors that Pho Island is cooking in their kitchen if they just give it a try.

In addition to the mouthwatering food, Pho Island also offers a variety of special drinks, including beer, wine, margaritas, milkshakes, smoothies, and milk teas. Stop in for lunch, dinner, or happy hour to try for yourself.

TAKE a SABBATICAL SABBATICAL

DISTILLERY MAKES GOOD BOOZE

Distillery owners Jack Zech and Daniel Leonard are on the biggest sabbatical of their lives. After attending college together and working the corporate scene in New York, they found themselves yearning for an opportunity to pause and create a new opportunity that would redirect their careers and futures. It wasn’t long before they opened the doors of Sabbatical Distillery on Victoria Island, in the heart of the Delta, making it San Joaquin County’s first and only whiskey distillery to open since prohibition nearly 100 years ago.

Technically speaking, a sabbatical is an extended break from work to pursue other hobbies and interests.

“We had to ask ourselves what is important in our life’s work,” says Daniel. “We have used our work in the distillery as a way to stop and connect with nature.”

And there certainly are endless ways to connect with nature at Sabbatical. The distillery is on the property of Jack’s 7,000-acre family farm. Since 1964, the land has been abundant in asparagus, corn, almonds, citrus, and blueberries, to name a few. “We use what we grow on the property to make our whiskey, gin, and vodka,” says Jack.

“Our corn is in our bourbon, and

we have a vodka infused with essence from our blueberries.”

Those who want to see the distillery and farmland can visit the tasting room for a flight of their distinctly delicious whiskeys and refreshing vodka and gin; and looking forward, a membership club and official property tours are slated to start this summer. While you’ll likely only spend a few hours on the island, we encourage you to think of it like your own minisabbatical—a break to try new things, if you will.

A Taste of Portugal

ST. JORGE WINERY PLANTS PORTUGUESE VARIETALS IN LODI

Avisit to St. Jorge Winery transports guests to a land far away, where many of Lodi’s founding farming families have roots—in Portugal. Owners Jenise and Vern Vierra have created an oasis amongst the vineyards in Lodi Wine Country that pays homage to their Portuguese heritage in grandiose style. Upon arrival, guests enter a charming courtyard featuring ornate statues, tranquil water fountains, Roman columns, and Mediterranean landscaping. Guests are cheerfully greeted and welcomed with a smile from Jenise while Vern tells the history of

the property, wines, and his Portuguese heritage.

The winery is a tribute to Vern’s grandparents, who hailed from the Portuguese Azores Islands, and from whom Vern fondly remembers learning about winemaking. Vern’s grandfather, Joe Azevedo, immigrated from the island of St. Jorge, and was incredibly proud of his Portuguese heritage. So, in 2007, when the couple decided to launch a winery in the burgeoning Lodi wine region, Vern knew exactly what he wanted to name it—St. Jorge.

The picturesque property boasts a small but powerful 3,500 case

production winery specializing in Portuguese wine varietals like tinta roriz, touriga nacional, and alvarinho. But being in Lodi Wine Country, the Vierras also planted the region’s signature zinfandel grape alongside cabernet sauvignon and syrah. They also planted two acres of trincadeira, a unique Portuguese variety with only four acres planted in the United States. Their trincadeira wine is made as a one hundred percent stand-alone wine, another unusual aspect of their winemaking approach.

In June of 2021, St. Jorge was awarded a Best of Class award and 96 points for their alicante bouschet (typically a blending grape) from the California State Fair. The wine pours a deep, vibrant rouge red.

St. Jorge is also the only winery in the country producing a rosé port, Vinho Rosa Dolce, crafted from tinta toriz and carignan grapes. Ruby red in color and with intense fruit aromas, the wine is made for summer sipping alongside strawberry shortcake or sorbet. St. Jorge also offers a port wine club, featuring five other styles including touriga national, with flavors of spice and herbs.

A Bounty of Blueberries

Each year, we look forward to buckets of fresh blueberries at farmers markets across the county. After all, what isn’t to love?

The small but mighty berries are rich in nutrients but low on the glycemic index, making them the perfect fruit for those watching their sugar intake. Sweet, juicy, and delectable, blueberries are essential to summer baking. Use them in blueberry muffins, your morning oatmeal, or even in your smoothies for an antioxidant boost. Another bonus, blueberries also have all the essential flavor profiles for savory dishes like summer salsa, a blueberry red wine reduction over pork tenderloin, and canapes. Check out our three recipes that will satisfy both your sweet and savory cravings all season long.

ARCHITECTURE OF a Dinner Party

WYNN DERR DESIGNS DREAM SOIRÉES

“We do everything, you do nothing.” That’s Wynn (Spring) Derr’s mantra when it comes to her company Très Soirée. The retired architect, who notably designed Berghold Winery, is enjoying a second career as a professional personal chef, offering full-service dinner service and party designs for intimate gatherings.

The idea for Très Soirée was born out of Spring’s own love of hosting elaborate dinner parties. On every occasion, Spring went all out, not only cooking grandiose meals but also crafting place settings, stationery, and ornate tablescapes all with a theme in mind. The hobby was bolstered by Spring’s understanding of architecture, and you can see the influence in her final products.

While additional staff is brought in as needed, Spring is the business. She is the

chef, the party planner, and the designer, all rolled into one. “Am I formally trained as a chef? No. I’m formerly trained as an architect. Does that mean I can’t chef? No.”

In April, Spring decided to create a business using her unique set of skills. Her goal is to put on a couple of dinner parties (or brunches or lunches) per month, maxing out at one per weekend.

“All you have to do is wipe down your counters and dust your tables and we do everything [else],” Spring says. “It’s a very complete service.”

While Spring prefers to handle the whole party, her services are available a la carte. From the font of the menu to the final course, no detail is overlooked. In fact, it’s Spring’s obsessive research and preparation that makes her parties stand out. “It’s not just dinner, it’s more creating an experiential environment,” Spring explains.

Spring has already hosted a French

Laundromat party—a play on The French Laundry—featuring dishes from the restaurant’s repertoire and similar presentations over eight courses. Another dinner, held in Brookside, served Brazilian food alongside an Amazonian tablescape. Spring researched for hours to ensure every detail was authentic and gorgeous, right down to the napkin fold bouquet centerpiece.

“I’m not just going to [throw] a party for you, it’s going to be researched to the Nth degree,” says Spring. “It’s an evening that you’re not soon to forget.”

HOUSE OF ICE CREAM IS SERVING A SWEET STRAWBERRY TREAT

 PHOTOS AND STORY BY

House of Ice-Cream, owned by husband-and-wife, Roderick Tyler and Aminda Sovuth, have figured out how to make desserts anything but ordinary. Combining their homemade and vintage-inspired ice creams (made with simple ingredients) and an endless variety of classic snacks that taste deliciously nostalgic (think Nilla Wafers, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal, Circus Animal Crackers, Chips Ahoy Cookies, and Reeses’s Peanut Butter Cups), they have created an impressive menu of explosive sweet treats. We’re especially excited about their Strawberry Gansito Sundae, a delicious combination of Neapolitan ice-cream with Gansito, which is best described as a Mexican Twinkie, consisting of light and fluffy vanilla cake and strawberry cream filling, before it’s coated in chocolate. It wouldn’t be a sundae without whipped cream, and in this case, strawberry sauce! Pop in to order one up, along with any of their other ice creams, shakes, and cakes. Or arrange to have House of Ice Cream cater your next event.

COOK AT HOME

How to Cook a Crawdad

TIPS AND TRICKS TO PREPARE THEM LIKE A PRO

Crawdads, also known as crayfish or crawfish, are small shellfish found in freshwater rivers and ponds throughout the United States. And while they look like mini lobsters, these shellfish only grow to be three to six inches. With a mild, delicate flesh, crawdads are essential for a true, southern style crawfish boil. The only catch, quite literally, is the laborious process of cleaning the crawdads to make them safe for consumption. Below, we’ve put together a step-by-step process for hosting the essential crawdad cook off!

ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO COOK CRAWDADS

5 lbs. fresh, live crawdads

Large bowl or cooler

Salt

Large cooking pot

Cajun seasoning

Lemon Butter Hot sauce

STEP 3: Continue purging the shellfish by draining the dirty water and refilling the bowl with fresh water until the crawdads are completely clean. You will know you are done purging when the rinsing water is clear.

STEP 1: Fill a large bowl with cold water and gently stir crawfish with a slotted spoon to remove any debris like dirt or sand. Be sure to discard any crawdads that float, as they are no longer safe for consumption.

STEP 2: Discard the dirty water and refill the container for a second cleaning. Add one cup of salt into the bowl and leave the crawdads for fifteen to twenty minutes. This cleaning method is known as purging, used to clean the mud out of the stomach and gills.

STEP 4: Fill the large pot with water and bring to a rolling boil. Add four to five tablespoons of Cajun seasoning along with the crawdads. Once the water returns to a boil, cook for five minutes. Remove from heat and allow the crawdads to soak in hot water for an additional 20 to 30 minutes.

STEP 5: Drain the crawdads in a large strainer and place them on a large platter or bowl. Serve immediately with lemon, hot sauce, and melted butter. Add more Cajun seasoning to taste.

PRO-TIP FOR EATING

CRAWDADS: Twist the crawdad in half and suck the meat from the head and tail. Just be sure to have plenty of napkins!
