The time I spent at ARC architects and engineers (ARC) were one of the best days of my life. My days at ARC not only made my architecture journey better but also my personal journey of life as I got to interact with like minded individuals and share my thoughts regarding architecture and life. It was a great opportunity for me to learn architecture from a new perspective. I consider myself very lucky to have been a part of the ARC team. Meeting professionals in and out of the office has been a wonderful experience for me to socially interact as an architect as well as a person.

The project is to make a residence having grandeur spaces both inside and out. The client wants to built his residence along with a swimming pool and an out house at his backyard. The exterior of the house is designed in a modern style. The concept for this project is providing pocket garden at different levels of the house where the residents can enjoy the green spaces and also connects them. As the building lies in the contour, the different levels are managed like wise.
I was involved in this project from the intial phase which included research, conceptual development, conceptual planning, conceptual 3D modelling, conceptual presentation and illustrations. I learned about the conceptual phase, which begins with understanding the client’s requirements, site settings, and project theme. Then, during the research phase, I looked up information about the site and themes that would be appropriate for it and considered the challenges that came up in the project. And brainstorming was done to locate the residence’s spaces with the idea of providing pocket gardens inside the house. Once the form and functions were determined, we moved on to the illustration and render phase, where I illustrated the project’s concept. Finally, a conceptual presentation was created to illustrate how the building would look and the spaces that would be included.
The requirement of the project was to create a house for the client’s family that could be as open and with the feel of nature as possbile. The family wants privacy among themselves so they wanted to have big bedrooms.

The residence project is currently ongoing. The exterior is almost finished, and the interior is about to begin. I was involved in the interior design of the Puja room, meditation room, ground floor master bedroom with walk in closet and bathroom, first floor master bedroom’s walk in closet and bathroom, and guest room’s walk in closet and bathroom. The theme is traditional, similar to Kerela style homes, and the clients are more inclined to Vaastu, so everything was designed with according to Vaastu, while keeping the clients’ preferences and requirements in mind. As a result, the interiors follow the same theme as the exterior.
MY INVOLVEMENT:
I was involved in interior design of this project. I designed the interior spaces of Puja room, meditation room, ground floor master bedroom with walk in closet and bathroom, first floor master bedroom’s walk in closet and bathroom, and guest room’s walk in closet and bathroom. Throughout this process, I researched traditional Kerela architecture, Vaastu, the tones, materials, textures, furnitures and elements to be used in the project. The mood board was created before designing to better understand how the idea will work. The spaces were then designed to meet the requirements using design principles. Finally, the interiors were rendered in order to provide a view of the rooms.
According to Vaastu, the room of head of the house should be located in South West of the house touching the ground. Hence, this room lies at the South West corner in ground floor of the house. As the theme is traditional at the same time its keeping with the today’s time. Keeping up that in mind and changing according to clients changes and their perception of their room the design was finalized. The walk in closet and washroom is made similar to bedroom following the same theme.
According to Vaastu, the room for the guest should be located in North West of the house. Blending with the traditional and modern design, the colour used are earthy tones and brass as a metal. The walk in closet wardrobe is off white to blend withearthy tones to make it look spacious and brighter.

The concept of the residence is modern and contemporary. Because the roadsides are narrow and the house is attached to the adjacent houses, the exterior features edgy elements and large windows. To provide ample light inside the house, large windows and skylights are fitted. The colour palette is neutral, consisting of white, grey, and wood tones. Paints, plaster grooving, shera board, toughened glass balcony, and glass windows were used. The use of different materials and elements enhances the facade.
I was involved in the design of the facade as well as the municipal drawing. I did some research on facade design and treatments. As per the client’s requirement, I conceptualised the design to give it an edgy look. Under the supervision of my supervisor, I drew municipal drawings of both architecture and structure. The municipal drawing is completed to submit for approval to build and contains basic drawings that are required to understand how the building will be built and how it will look. The architecture drawing portrays the spaces contained by the building as well as the exterior of the building. The structure drawing conveys the requirements and process of constructing the building.
For municipal drawing; Architecture:
• First sheet must contain location map, site plan, triangulation area, door window schedule, one floor plan, one elevation and one section.
• If the site area is less than 1 ropani then the drawings is in scale of 1/8”=1’.
• If the site area is more than 1 ropani then the drawings except site are is in scale of 1/8=1” and site area in 1/16=1’.
• Architecture drawing requires location map, site plan, triangulation area, door window schedule, all floor plans, all elevations and all sections.
• It also requires electrical and sanitary drawings.
For municipal drawing;
Structure:
• Footing plan and it’s detail.
• All floor column plans and their’s details.
• All floor beam plans and theirs’s details.
• All floor slab plans and their’s details.
• Staircase details
• To make a lively facade, a lot of experimentation on forms, colours and materials is needed to create balance and a sense of hierarchy.
• Different facade strategies
• Site constraints are inevitable so they should be cleared beforehand designing.
• Importance of client’s approval.
• Preparation of municipal drawings and their requirements.
• Drafting skills improvement.
• Proper use of materials, textures and design elements.

The working drawing is done for construction, instructing the site supervisors and workers to construct the building according to the design. The architecture drawing depicts exterior of the building as well as the spaces contained within it. The structure drawing describes the building’s requirements and construction process.
