NE W S E R M O N S E R I E S THE STORY BEFORE THE STORY: An Overview of the Old Testament Our spring sermon series will have us walk through the six major periods in the Old Testament; Creation, Abraham, Sinai, Kings, Exile, and Temple. Walking through the Old Testament will help us see God’s plan of Redemption through history leading up to the Story of Jesus. MAY LIBRARY FOCUS: MISSIONS

Dread the coming hot months with all that indoor time? Then stop by the church library and select books that will enrich those summer days. Some of the most inspiring stories are found in truelife accounts of missionaries whom God uses to achieve the impossible.

And The Word Came With Power by Joanne Shetler tells of a shy California farm girl who became a missionary in the Philippines. This riveting account starts with a helicopter crash and continues through harrowing situations as Joanne lives among the Balangaos. Miracle at Tenwek by Gregg Lewis tells of Dr. Ernie Steury, an Indiana farm boy who answered God’s call to become a medical missionary in Kenya. Conditions at the hospital were primitive, but after 40 years Dr. Steury founded Tenwek hospital, now one of the premier mission hospitals in the world. Daring to Hope by Katie Davis Majors is a New York Times best seller and the sequel to Kisses from Katie, the account of a young woman who founded a mission and became the adoptive mother of thirteen daughters. Katie’s reliance on God gave her the courage to continue working in a country with such poverty and despair.

COLUMBARIUM ROSE GARDEN DEDICATION Sunday, May 5 at 8:15 am

The St. Andrew’s Rose Committee planted 12 new rose bushes in the Columbarium this past December. The roses are in honor of the many friends and relatives who are interred at St. Andrew’s. We thank Mary Bauer for her significant donation as well as others. Now, the roses are in full bloom! We will have a short Rose Garden dedication on Sunday, May 5, at 8:15 am, immediately following the 7:30 am Service. Please come to honor those interred and celebrate the wonderful gift of roses that our Lord has given us. All the roses were selected for their wonderful fragrance Intrigue, Marilyn Monroe, Ring of Fire, Dick Clark, Mr. Lincoln, Fire Fighter, Falling in Love, Sweet Surrender, Secret, and Sparkle and Shine. We hope to see you there.

SAPC HEAVENLY HOSTS

Heavenly Hosts is a group that provides hospitality to foster fellowship at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Our most well-known hospitality provides and serves baked goods during the fellowship time after the 9:00 am and 10:45 am Services each Sunday and after the 7:30 am service once a month. We also support special events throughout the year such as hosting the annual Christmas Concert reception and Easter brunch. You can be as involved as you want to be in this group! We have no regularly scheduled meetings. We are especially looking for people to provide monetary donations and homemade or purchased snack food for fellowship on Sunday mornings. The following is a list of our activities each year. Occasionally, there are other ministry events that we are asked to support as well. • Weekly Sunday fellowship after 9:00 am and 10:45 am Services • Monthly Sunday fellowship after 7:30 am Service • Lunches for new members classes • Preparing and serving Easter brunch for over 500 people on both campuses • Hosting the Christmas concert reception for about 800 people, including: set-up, providing and serving cookies and hot cider, and clean up • Providing snacks for volunteers at the semi-annual St. Andrew’s clean up days • Preparing and serving lunch to teachers at Cross or Harelson School as our outreach ministry • Providing baked goods to serve as breakfast and desert at annual St. Andrew’s Women’s Retreat To learn more, contact Jamie Gardner at jamiergardner@yahoocom.

MISSION OUTREACH FAITH THAT WORKS Our Journey to our Non-Profit

Faith that Works is a Christ-centered ministry that desires to go where people are and simply love and serve them without expectations. For the past five years, we have been a sub-committee of Missions focusing on Service Worship, the Mobile Shower Unit, and Community Partnerships. These will continue at St. Andrew’s. We will be presenting Faith that Works to the Community Renewal board on May 8 at 8:00 am. As soon as their board agrees to have us come under their umbrella, the transition from Faith that Works as only a ministry of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to Faith that Works, the non-profit, will be complete. This means that we can allow partners to tow our Mobile Shower Unit without liability on our church. We are also hoping to help more churches implement Service Worship. Another big factor is that Faith that Works will be a non-profit for the poor which means that tax credits and donation receipts can apply. We will also be having a mini retreat on May 4 and would appreciate your prayers for God’s direction. Thank you for all of your support these past five years! We are looking forward to seeing what God has in store for us!

ICS PEANUT BUTTER CHALLENGE

ICS (Interfaith Community Services) is having a fun competition between faith communities to see who can collect the most peanut butter for the ICS Food Bank from May 1 to June 30. ICS is hoping to raise 10,000 jars this year. Jars of peanut butter can be brought to the church office or left at the church in the grocery carts between services on Sundays. St. Andrew’s won the competition last year and hope to claim the title again. CONTACT RUTHANN SMITHRUD, Director of Mission Outreach rsmithrud@sapctucson.org || 520-297-7201 x204

Many thanks to the Wittman Ringers for their kindness and understanding while I was recuperating from a yellow fever shot the last two months. Their concern and caring were a great help to me. I am so fortunate to have such a family for support. Blessings, Arlene Sturm 6 /

Faith Community Nurses Say Examine 5G For Possible Health Risks Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, (Colossians 3:23). Fifth generational wireless technology, 20 x faster than current wireless technology, will soon be deployed. FCC and US Congress authorized its deployment and Arizona has enacted legislation to allow small cell 5G antennas to be placed on poles in public right of ways. If a large cell tower is placed it is subject to a public hearing but small cell antennas will be exempt from any public hearings. Contact emsafetyalliance.org for further info. Scientists are researching existing wireless technology due to health concerns, such as cancers, reproductive problems, and neurological problems such as ADHD. Children are at greater risk. Some people develop allergic symptoms from wireless radiation exposure. There seems to be no health studies of 5G and limited research about biological effects. An international group of EMF scientists (scientists who study electromagnetic fields) are calling for safety testing prior to deployment. On 1/1/19, 247 scientists from 42 nations, concerned about the increased exposure, appealed to the UN for more protective guidelines. (emfscientist.org) Stay informed and find out how to use wireless technology safely saferemr.com. Other sites for info: magdahavas.com , niehs.nih.gov; nih.gov

ACTION LEARNING TEAM

Last year, Session assembled a team to review our current Mission, Vision, Tenets of Faith, and Core Value Statements. It has been more than 10 years since these statements have been reviewed. The review team is charged with gathering input from the congregation regarding thoughts on our current statements. The comments we receive will be presented to Session. If you have a small group that would like to meet with our team or if you would like to be included in a small group to provide the team with your thoughts on the statements, please send an email to ALTFM@sapctucson.org including your name, contact information and times when you might be available to meet. If you prefer, you can provide your thoughts and comments in your email response. The current Statements and Tenets can be found on the St. Andrew’s sapctucson.org/mission-statement.
