Stephen Ministry is the one-to-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that use the Stephen Series system. Stephen Ministry Stephen Ministry had always interested me… I value one-onone relationships of trust and confidentiality. So, in 2007 I finally responded to God’s nudge to go to Stephen Ministry training. Good choice! I have found coming alongside someone going through a difficult patch in life to be very rewarding. Each time I enter a relationship with a care friend, I experience: • feelings of inadequacy…keeping me dependent on God • feelings of relief as I remember I don’t have to solve their difficulty…just be a faithful presence, listener, encourager and prayer warrior • feelings of humility as I again see a relationship of trust develop • feelings of wonder as we discover common experiences that bind us together…things no one but
God knew as we were being matched • feelings of joy as I see God bring help and healing to another • feelings of God’s pleasure at time well spent Over the last 12 years, I have had the privilege of listening to, sharing with, laughing with, crying with, and praying with some amazing people, people I now call friends. - Judy Herzog

Born in Mexico City and raised just north of Tucson, Arizona, Russell James Newberg absorbs the culture and nature he encounters and brings new life to these experiences through his exquisite method of paper cutting and layering. He is inspired by the skeletons and painted animals he saw on the streets of Oaxaca, Mexico, as a child and by the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert. An avid hiker and canyoneer, Russell experiences the wild first hand and brings that inspiration to his art. Meg has always been delighted by the special quality of the light here in the desert. After college she became an apprentice to local artists such as Phil Stark and Brenda Semanick. Her oil paintings celebrate the beauty of natural world. She spends a lot of her time in the Catalina mountains and brings home photographs to work from in the studio.
SAFEGUARDING OUR HEALTH Vaccines Protect Us All We share more than food and culture within our homes and communities, we can also spread disease. Luckily, we live in a time when vaccines can protect us from many of the most serious illnesses. Staying current on your shot helps you and your neighbors avoid getting and spreading disease. These days, the risk of not being vaccinated in a developed country might seem superficially safe but remember we live in an era of international travel where we can be exposed to mobile pathogens. So even though you don’t travel, a neighbor could go overseas and bring back the disease to your area. When enough people are vaccinated, then the entire community gains protection from the disease. This is called community immunity. It helps to stop spread of disease and protects the most vulnerable: newborns, the elderly, and people fighting serious illnesses like cancer. Healthy children and teens get vaccinated against 16 diseases but as we age into adulthood our protection from some diseases fade and a booster is recommended. The flu vaccine is “new” each year because the virus changes. Help St. Andrew’s keep diseases at bay and stay up to date with vaccines. Reference: National Institute of Health

TRUNK OR TREAT
When: October 27, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Where: SW Campus Parking Lot HOLY MOLIES UPDATE
This year the Holy Molies (4th and 5th graders) are becoming great friends! We’re learning how Jesus wants us to be in relationship with others. Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 23. We meet in Room F from 6:00 pm 8:00 pm. Please bring $5 to offset the cost of dinner.
What: Trunk or Treat is a safe way for kids to trick or treat. Volunteers come, decorate the trunks of their cars, and hand out candy to the kids who come. It is a way for us to get to know each other and the kids in our neighborhood. Why: It is a way for us to get together as a congregation and hang out with
people from different groups. We also get to connect with families from the SAPC Preschool and Kindergarten and our neighborhood.
Want to get involved? There are several ways that you can be involved in this event. You can decorate your trunk, be a volunteer greeter, or organize a craft or game for kids. More Information: Contact Shelly Akins at sakins@sapctucson.org with questions or to sign up to be a part of this event.

TEAM WORLD VISION
For the past 4 years, a group of people from St. Andrew’s has partnered with World Vision, to train for and run either a half or full marathon. Most of us are not “runners.” Maybe for some a half or full marathon is a bucket list item, for some this is about exercising and community. The main goal beyond all of that is that we raise money to provide people around the world with access to clean drinking water. Globally, there are about 800,000 people that do not have access to clean water. Access to water changes everything. It changes the health of communities, improves nutrition and offers greater opportunities for children to go to school. This year, we will be training for the Phoenix Half and Full Marathon
on February 8, 2020. Our launch date is Sunday, October 6. So come, walk, jog, run, train with us as we grow community and change the lives of people across the world. Questions? Feel free to reach out to Pastor Mat mgrover@sapctucson.org or in the church office 297-7201

Not Your White Jesus – Following a Radical, Refugee Messiah (Sheri Faye Rosendahl) “Addresses the need to reexamine the true ways of Jesus that we find clearly in the red letters, enabling readers to discover what it truly means to follow the ways of Jesus in contrast to following the ways of the American Christian elite.” [The PC(USA) Store Review] Paul – An Apostle’s Journey “In this short and spirited book, Douglas Campbell introduces readers to the apostle he has studied in depth over his scholarly career. He dramatically recounts the life of one of early Christianity’s most fascinating figures—and offers powerful insight into his mind and his influential message.” (Book Cover) “Who would have expected a pageturner on the Apostle Paul?” (5-star reader review) Party of One – Truth, Longing, and the Subtle Art of Singleness (Joy Beth Smith) “Are you single with ALL THE THOUGHTS on singleness? Married but wanting to know how to love your single friends better? In church leadership with not the slightest clue how to minister to the growing number of singles in your congregation? If you answered yes to any of those questions, this book is for you!” (Reader Review)
