IMAGE: Gaskill Street flooding on Friday.
Canowindra’s Streets Flood Again Late on Friday afternoon, Canowindra received another large downpour of rain with over 35mm being reported in just over half an hour. This is the second flood in three months, although luckily this time there was no hail with the accompanying storm. Despite efforts by Cabonne Council over the past few weeks to rectify the problem in Gaskill Street, there was very little difference to how the flooding occurred and the damage to businesses that received more water into their shopfronts. The businesses which sit around the wheelchair access ramps across the main street were the most particularly affected. It seems that now Cabonne Council will have to try Option B, which is to make the grates bigger than they currently are. Looking at the volume of water, it is clear to see that this is not the only problem the Council will need to look at.
The following questions are raised: are the pipes large enough to cope? Why don’t the buildings have downpipes and gutters? Why are certain downpipes not actually connected to the stormwater pipes? The biggest consideration to be made is the impact of the wheelchair access and how the water banks up around this and cannot get away quickly enough, causing subsequent flooding. “We have had a lot of rain in the past, and it is only since these access ramps have been installed that our buildings have been flooded,” said Bill Paul who has been in the main street for over 40 years. We need this problem rectified as soon as possible. Cabonne Council is meeting with concerned business owners today, hopefully with some answers! By Cheryl Newsom

Asbestos can be found in brick, weatherboard, clad and fibro homes behind wall and floor tiles, under floorcoverings including carpets and, in walls, ceilings, roofs, gutters and even dog kennels. It could be anywhere. Sadly, current research tells us that people are unknowingly exposing themselves and their families to dangerous asbestos fibres during home renovations, and TV renovating programs are fuelling the popularity of DIY. During national Asbestos Awareness Month (November), together with my fellow ambassadors Cherie Barber, Scott Cam, Barry Du Bois, John Jarratt and Scott McGregor, we hope to help save the lives of people like Mrs Carol Klintfält OAM who tragically lost her battle with malignant mesothelioma on 7 November 2014. Carol developed mesothelioma because she inhaled asbestos fibres when working with an architect and while handling fibro sheets when renovating the family home in the 1970s. Mesothelioma is a cancer
that usually develops between 20-50 years after inhaling asbestos fibres. There is no cure and the average survival time after diagnosis is only 10-12 months – hard hitting statistics none of us can ignore. An extraordinary woman, Carol was more than a statistic. When she lost her battle with asbestos-related disease, her family lost a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister and many lost a very dear and special friend. This family were no different to the hundreds and thousands of homeowners throughout Australia. When they renovated their home, they didn’t know the dangers or that the impact of working with asbestos would be devastating. One in every three homes built or renovated before 1987 will contain asbestos products. All Australians need to ‘Get to kNOw asbestos this NOvember’ and visit www. asbestosawareness.com.au to learn the dangers of asbestos and how to manage it safely because it’s not worth the risk. Sincerely, Don Burke OAM

Rally organisers are anticipating between five and ten thousand people to take part in the rally. For further information, contact Marj Bollinger on 6366 8593. Science Excellence Award for Sitha
Dozens of clever Year 11 students from the Central West have been commended for excelling in science at the inaugural Victor Chang School Science Award ceremony. One of those students is Sithatshisiwe Ncube from Canowindra High School, a bright young student who has applied herself in chemistry and biology. “I was surprised”, says a smiling Sitha, who admits that she had not heard of the award before, and is interested in pursuing a career in science, contributing to research projects. “It’s a good thing and I’m really happy about it.” “Thankyou Mrs McKenzie and Mrs Balcombe for nominating me for the award, for helping me find science interesting and making it fun.” The School Science Awards were established to continue Dr Victor Chang’s legacy and to promote and inspire students of both genders to pursue a career in science or health and medical research. Dr Victor Chang made pioneering contributions to the field of heart transplantation
because of his curious and enquiring mind and passion for discovery. Dr Daniela Stock from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute attended the ceremony to congratulate the winning students and share her insights into why the younger generation should consider a career in science. “If you’re someone who sees something and questions how it works or if you wonder how you could make a difference in the world, then a career in science is the perfect opportunity because it gives you this luxury,” said Dr Stock. “In science, the whole world is there for you to question and you can follow that dream endlessly.” Sitha attended the awards ceremony with her father and other talented science students in the region in Dubbo on Wednesday, and has been invited to tour the Victor Change Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney, learning from world renowned researchers all working towards finding cures for heart disease.

How to Trim Your Household Budget With the cost of living at an all-time high in Australia and Christmas just around the corner, many Aussies experience financial stress around this time of year. Here are 5 tips from Memplans to trim your household budget and make your money grow: 1. Price Match: If you’re looking for a particular household item, jump online and view the local stockists to see whose offering the best price. Don’t be afraid to call your retailer and get them to price match – it’s a fantastic way to ensure you don’t overspend on products that are being sold for less elsewhere. 2. Update Your Insurance: Australians who let their private health policies continue every year, or have a poor understanding of their cover, could be forking out an additional $1500 a year more than they should. Private health insurance can be quickly outdated if your circumstances change so it’s a great idea to revise your current health plan to make sure you’re not spending money on services you’ll never need. 3. Budgeting: Keep track of your expenditure for a month and then review the areas where money has been spent, such as bills, food, toiletries and leisure. That $4 coffee every day doesn’t seem like much at the time but $120 on coffee a month may make you think twice. Once in writing, you can easily see what your spending money on and where you can make the appropriate cuts. 4. Strategic Grocery Shopping: Buying your lunch every day or even a few times a week at work could be contributing to over spending on food, so prepare dinner with lunch in mind for the next day. Meals such as stir fries and curries reheat really well and roast dinners are perfect for the contents of sandwiches the following day. 5. Fix Things Before They Break: Although it may seem like an extra expense at the time, regular servicing of cars and white goods such as fridges and washing machines will catch any emerging issues before they turn into a serious problem. Ongoing maintenance will not only save you money in the long term but will ensure your products are up to date and meet the latest safety standards. By making these simple adjustments to your household budget, you are only a few steps away to seeing your dollars stretch.

Christmas Lunch Doubts
IMAGE: Mary Talbot and Mrs Swords at the Canowindra Public School Fete.
Great Day For Public School Fete Canowindra Public School held their annual fete on Friday, their major fundraiser for the year. The fete was a great success, with early estimates of fundraising around the $5,000 mark. The money raised by the fete goes to the School P&C, who were responsible for organising food and the jumping castle, among other things. Each class at the school was responsible for organising a fete stall. Planning for some of the students started at the beginning of the year. “We’ve been growing plants and breeding chickens to sell,” said Canowindra Public School Principal Sharon Hawker. “It was very successful.”
There were plenty of stalls offering a wide range of goods and entertainment, with plant stalls, cake stalls, a photo booth, ice blocks, ten pin bowling with real bowling balls and pins, jams, condiments, eggs, a treasure hunt, face painting, biscuits and homemade cordial. Moyne kindly donated their fairy floss machine for the day, and two generous people donated their time to run it. “We always get good support. Thanks to all parents, the community and the kids for supporting it. A special thanks to McClintocks for the helium; we made $800 on the balloon stall so that was really generous.” By Rosi Broom
The small committee that has been responsible for coordinating the Christmas Day Lunch for the last few years has reached a crisis point. Most of the members will be absent from the district over Christmas and unable to organise the event. However, if there are some willing community members who are interested in assisting either as volunteers, or in the preparation for the day, the lunch can still go ahead. The Christmas Day Lunch began a few years ago, enabling members of the community who are lonely or struggling to share a meal with others. There are several people who assist in the background with food preparation, setting tables at the Canowindra Bowling Club, providing musical entertainment and serving those who are guests for the day. This won’t be possible unless there is a coordinator to help everything run smoothly. It would be a shame to see this community activity die due to lack of support. A committee meeting will take place on Friday 27 November at 2pm in the Canowindra CWA rooms on Blatchford Street. We would love to have you with us to discuss the future of this event. ASBESTOS? Get to Know Asbestos this November Home renovators are being urged to not play “renovation roulette” with their own and their family’s health by observing a number of safety practices as part of Asbestos Awareness Month in November, Director — Environmental Services, Kate Alberry said. “If you are thinking about renovating, you must be aware of asbestos; it is important for home-owners and renovators to be aware of how to safely manage asbestos in and around the home,” Ms Alberry said. With the theme this year of: Get to kNOw Asbestos this NOvember, home renovators are reminded that asbestos is still very commonly found, particularly in older Australian homes. Asbestos was widely-used in building materials before 1987, so if your home was built or renovated before 1987 it most likely contains asbestos. At least one-in-three Australian homes contains asbestos including bricks, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes. Ms Alberry asked locals to resist the temptation to try and remove or renovate any asbestos building materials they may come across on their own. “Importantly, if you suspect you have asbestos in your home, don’t cut it! Don’t drill it! Don’t drop it! Don’t sand it! Don’t saw it! Don’t scrape it! Don’t scrub it! Don’t dismantle it! Don’t tip it! Don’t water-blast it! Don’t demolish it! And whatever you do, don’t dump it,” Ms Alberry said. “If you’re not sure if asbestos is in your home you can have it inspected by a licensed removalist or a licensed asbestos assessor.
Six places asbestos might be hiding “It’s amazing how many people are complacent about asbestos, even after public awareness campaigns,” said Slater and Gordon Asbestos Lawyer Martin Rogalski. “The consequences for themselves, as well as those around them, can be deadly.” As well as high-risk occupations, including the construction and automotive industries, Mr Rogalski highlighted six sources of asbestos exposure many people aren’t commonly aware of: 1. Proximity to non-compliant demolition and construction sites, factories and asbestos mines; 2. DIY renovations, especially houses built before the mid-1980s, anything made from bonded asbestos cement (including flat and corrugated fibro sheeting, water, drainage and flue pipes, roofing shingles and guttering); 3. Washing clothes worn by people exposed to asbestos; 4. Debris from bushfires, cyclones, floods and other natural disasters; 5. Rubbish dumps that fail to handle asbestos waste according to requirements; 6. Old and disused parks, especially children’s playgrounds that have fallen into disrepair. For more information on dealing with asbestos, go to the website: www.asbestosawareness.com.au/ or record potential exposure on the Slater and Gordon National Asbestos Register at www.slaterandgordon.com.au/asbestosregister.

A study released by Safe Work Australia has shown that home renovation is the largest non-occupational cause of malignant mesothelioma – one of the deadly diseases caused by asbestos. “Renovating homes is a very popular pastime and saves money, but unless people take adequate precautions it can be potentially very dangerous with the risk of contracting a potentially fatal asbestosrelated disease,” said Juliet Duffy, Principal of Regional Enviroscience – a hazardous materials consultant based in Dubbo. According to one estimate, asbestos may be present in as many as one third of all homes throughout Australia. Regional Enviroscience specialises in identification, testing, monitoring and management of asbestos materials and is currently working with Workcover to undertake ‘Mr Fluffy’ loose fill asbestos testing in regional NSW. If you are concerned that you may have asbestos in your home, their NATA accredited laboratory offers a reply paid DIY asbestos testing service. GREEN Thumb We all love our garden beds and pots to burst into colour in spring and early summer. That colour can come from annual or short lived plants that we have to plant each year, or it can come from longer lived perennial plants. In our region, we need perennial garden plants that will bounce back after winter frosts and survive hot, dry spells in summer. Salvias are near the top of my list for hardy flowering perennials. There are a wide range of cultivars of different forms and flower colours, including Hot Lips (red) and Sweet Lips (pink). Salvia leucantha “Santa Barbara” forms a dark green mound topped by spikes of blue flowers and Salvia Amistad is another hardy form with dark purple flowers. Daisies are perhaps old fashioned but they come in a wide range of types and colours and are colourful fillers for garden beds and pots. Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum) are now available in compact forms with masses of white flowers. African daisies (Osteospermum) are some of the tough plants that you see doing well as groundcovers in hot, neglected garden areas-my favourite is the cultivar “Serenity” with deep purple flowers. Marguerite daisies (Argyranthemum) are perhaps not as tough but cultivars such as “Sassy” make a brilliant flower colour show in pots. There are also a couple of Australian native “paper” daisies that grow well in our regionRhodanthe (white flowers) and Bracteantha (yellow/orange). Jerusalem sage (Phlomis fruticosa) with grey/green foliage and yellow flowers is an eye catching perennial that has bounced back well after a tough winter in my garden, as has Agastache “Sweet Lilli” which throws up tall spikes of apricot/pink flowers. Both of these contrast beautifully with the blue flowers of Catmint (Nepeta) which is sometimes used as a groundcover under roses. Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

We Will Remember Them
This year’s Remembrance Day service was held in Memorial Park, with a big turnout from the community to formally acknowledge the 97th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War. Students from Canowindra High School, Canowindra Public School and St Edwards School attended the service, as well as between 50-60 community members and local representatives. Madison Spencer and Rhys Maere from Canowindra High School led the service, and students from the Public School laid 30 flowers for people in their families who had served. Each flower carried with it a message with where they came from, where they served and what battalion they fought

Flowers and several wreaths were laid in honour of those who fought and those who lost their lives – one by each of the schools, one by Mike Harrison, President of the Canowindra Sub-Branch RSL and one by Grant Cummings, Canowindra Services and Citizens Club. Frank Bollan of Swan Hill, an ex-serviceman from The Royal Berkshire Regiment also laid a wreath “It was great to see the community’s support,” Mike said. “It’s nice to see community involvement in ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. Thank you to everybody for coming along and for their support to the Sub Branch throughout the year.” By Rosi Broom
TRADES & SERVICES
An announcement was made last week by the NSW Government that all preschools in the Orange electorate will be receiving a 2.5 per cent increase in funding in 2016, with some eligible for bonus payments of up to 5 per cent. “We all know the difference that quality childhood education makes to our kids’ start at school,” said Member for Orange Andrew Gee. “All preschools will receive an increase in their base rate of funding…which will help them keep pace with the cost of providing an early childhood service,” Mr Gee said. Canowindra Preschool is cautiously awaiting further information on the implications that changes to the Preschool Funding Model will have. “Small funding increases have been provided only for 4-5 year olds, and only for rural and remote areas, a funding category which Canowindra Preschool is no longer eligible for, due to the last restructure of the NSW Government Preschool Funding Model,” said Canowindra Preschool President Mandy Townsend. Mandy believes that for Canowindra Preschool to maintain its viability, a series of issues need to be addressed, including making funding available to 3 year olds as per the previous funding model to ensure quality early education and maintaining preschool funding so that all families can afford a preschool education for their children.

CATCH Of the Week
CANOWINDRA SPORT

WOMEN’S BOWLS Only one match was played on Tuesday 17 November. The result of the Rose Bowl Final saw Colleen Crump defeat Nancy Morrow with a score of 26-18. Thanks to the marker Betty Jenkins. The results of the sponsored bowls day were: Spider – Heather Hoad Winners (with the highest winning score) – Joyce Middleton and Marion Wilson. Runners Up (with the highest losing score) – Joy Beattie and Radka Tatterson. The Lucky Draw was won by Diane Slattery with No. 9. The Points Score winners for October were Bobbie Turner, Radka Tatterson and Colleen Crump with 15 points each. Two Canowindra teams are playing in the Young Cherry Blossom Triples on Tuesday and Wednesday 17-18 November. One team is made up of Daph Bryant, Moyna Rue and Christine Pickard, while the other one is made up of Jill Messenger, Deanna Noble and Sandy McDonald. Thank you to President Sheryn O’Malveney for organising the Mystery
Tour on Tuesday 10 November, which was enjoyed by the 24 bowlers who attended. Thank you also to our excellent bus driver David O’Malveney. We went through Gooloogong and Cowra to Young where we visited a few interesting places. The most interesting I thought was the Young Museum which had a great collection of memorabilia of the early years of Young. Following this we all enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Young Services Club, and came back home the way we went. The Melbourne Cup Day Party was held on Tuesday 3 November and those who attended, including some menfolk, all had an enjoyable time. We had a very tasty lunch supplied by the ladies. The most successful with the sweeps was Lorne Burgess who won $88. She had two firsts, one second and one third. Well done Lorne! Our Christmas Party and Presentation Day will be held with a lunch at Taste Canowindra on 8 December. Our New Year get together will be held at Radka Tatterson’s place on Tuesday 12 January 2016, commencing at 11am. Bowls will resume on Tuesday 19 January 2016 so we can get some Pennant Practice.
Sue Scifleet recently caught this 60cm cod on the Lachlan River. She kindly released it back “as it isn’t cod season”. Well done on this great catch Sue! Send us the photos of your best catch for the chance to win lots of fishing goodies from Cowra Marine Centre. Email your photos to editor@canowindraphoenix.com.au
