Christmas Comes To Canowindra
Twenty-five businesses participated in the Canowindra Christmas Shopping Evening on Saturday afternoon, with people filling the streets and stores on a sunny afternoon for another successful year for the event. The organising committee did a fantastic job in making this year’s shopping evening bigger and better than ever, bringing thousands of dollars back into the town’s economy. “The growth from last year was incredible,” says Liz Mitchell of Saffi, a member of the organising committee. “There was no parking in the main street and at some stages the footpath was full. The atmosphere was great and it was good fun. I really enjoyed it.” “It was standing room only in the shop at some points.” Four Santas were doing the rounds, flooding Gaskill Street with Christmas cheer and
holiday spirit while sensational musical performances from Kai Vita and Mackenzie Lazarou entertained shoppers from the verandah of the Old Vic Inn. I was absolutely stoked with the evening,” said Melissa Gersbach, another organiser of the event. “So far we’ve had some really good feedback. People have said the music in the street added atmosphere.” “It was a wonderful evening with a great vibe. Some of the shopkeepers have said they were pleasantly surprised with the turnout and would definitely be supporting it next year. It was definitely worth the effort.” Matt and Ross from Coco Harvest, the new chocolate shop in town said they didn’t really know how their business would do on the evening, which coincided with their grand opening. Does the main street fall into the category of being ‘owned’ by Cabonne, and does that mean that flooding caused by Cabonne not dealing with the problem as it occurred is at fault? The drain has been there for a very long time, coping with almost all other storm events apart from the previous over-flow, and fixing it after the event seems a tacit admission of liability, Bill.

IMAGE: There are so many wonderful things to browse at Moorbel Markets.
The Moorbel Markets are on again this Saturday 5 December from 8am to 12pm at Moorbell Hall. This will be the last market for the year before recommencing February 6. There’s still time to buy a ticket in the raffle which will be drawn at 12pm. The prize is a $100 open order from any business in Canowindra! A BBQ with sandwiches, a cuppa and scones are also available for minimal cost. The Moorbel Hall Committee wishes you a happy and safe Christmas! Did you know more than 90% of the materials used in a mobile phone are recyclable? MobileMuster is giving the Salvation Army $2 for every kilo of mobile phones and accessories recycled in December and January. Recycling your old mobiles through the Council and MobileMuster is easy and free – just drop them off at a Cabonne Council Office or waste management facility. By recycling you will not only be keeping mobiles out of landfill but you will be helping an Australian family in need. The Gindurra Movember Team from last week’s issue raised $3,625 towards increasing awareness of men’s health among other farmers. Congratulations to everyone who took part and grew some face fur or donated to some Mo Bros during November!
Local councils across Calare have received their second quarter payment under the Financial Assistance Grant program, totalling to more than $4.3 million in untied funding. The total cash payment for 201516 for Cabonne Council is $2,233,423. With the recent hot weather, Cabonne’s roads are melting. The new portion between Eugowra and Canowindra melted recently in the heat, turning to soup. The road received a temporary fix but with this summer set to be one of the hottest on record, what will the Council be doing to rectify this? One more gift can make a big difference and you can give the gift of clean water this Christmas by supporting Red Cross. Something as simple as a pipeline to carry clean water from a mountain spring to a community tap can create a culture of better hygiene for a village. One more gift to support Red Cross can also provide a homeless teenager with a hot meal on Christmas Eve. To give one more gift, call 1800 811 700 or donate online at redcross.org.au The Summer Reading Club for school age children is being held from December throughout January at all Central West Libraries with this year’s theme being Lost Worlds. Underwater worlds, alternate universes, epic adventures, mythical creatures and more await discovery in this summer’s SRC program. Open to all young people, SRC allows children and young people to develop a sense of community with other children. Register at Canowindra Library or online at www.summerreadingclub.org.au/ theclub/ Applications are open for 2015 Volunteer Grants, a government program that supports volunteering in local communities. Grants available are between $1,000 and $5,000, going to not-for-profit organisations to support their volunteers. Applications close at 2pm on Wednesday 9 December.
Call 1800 183 374 for more information, or visit www.dss.gov.au/grants to download an application pack. Canowindra’s Christmas Day Lunch is on with many thanks going to those who have volunteered to come on board as part of the committee, and planning is well underway. Christmas is a time of togetherness, when we spend time together, enjoy the company of others and celebrate the meaning of Christmas. Will you be alonethis Christmas? Will your family and friends be away? This is a chance to come along and enjoy the company of others, catch up with friends and make some new ones. We extend our many thanks to the Canowindra Bowling Club for their support in providing the venue. Through community involvement, there will be excellent food, music and wonderful company. This is a free community event, no alcohol is permitted and all people are welcome. Bookings are essential and can be made at Toby’s Butchery, Canowindra Food Basket, Canowindra Health Centre and St Vincent de Paul Centre. Transport is available if required. Bookings need to be made by 18 December. For more information call Lyn Rasmussen on 0409 867 002.

The Old Vic Inn Wins Silver Canowindra’s Old Vic Inn won Silver in the NSW Tourism Awards for Standard Accommodation in Sydney last week. This category is open to properties that deliver a broad range of amenities that exceed above average accommodation needs, and comes under those properties that have up to 4-star accommodation. Graeme and Alison Beasley attended the Awards which were held at The Pavilion at Darling Harbour on Thursday 26 November. Over 700 people attended. Other finalists in this category were Atura, Blacktown, The Lodge Outback Hotel, NSW, and the winner, Moama on Murray Resort, Murray Region. Graeme said, “it is a great honour to be judged second in NSW in this category. The Old Vic Inn were the only winners in any category from Cabonne Shire and it is an excellent opportunity to showcase Canowindra.”
The Old Vic Inn is continuing to grow in terms of large group bookings, who are using it as a base when they visit and explore what Canowindra has to offer. In fact, this week, they have enjoyed hosting a large group from Brigidine College in Randwick who stayed midweek for two nights. This is great for the whole town, as these types of bookings have flow on effects to shops, restaurants and tourist attractions in the area. On New Year’s Eve The Old Vic Inn will be open for dinner and what a great way to start to see the New Year in. Of course in the lead up to Christmas, there are still vacancies for those who are wanting to treat their staff to a Christmas Party. Give Graeme, Alison or Jenny a call at The Old Vic Inn to book for dinner or book your relatives in for Christmas. By Cheryl Newsom

Transforming the White Room into an explosion of Christmas colours, the children were delighted to be in “Santa’s Room” for their annual Christmas photos. “The musicians were absolutely brilliant,” said Tommy, “and it was a lovely atmosphere.” The Christmas cheer continues in Canowindra throughout December with the recent announcement that Cabonne Council will be sponsoring a shop decoration competition, and all businesses in town are invited to be a part of it. A combination of work Christmas parties, family get-togethers and summer celebrations with friends bring an abundance of food and most of it is probably not very healthy! With more temptations to eat or drink far too much, self-control can slip and we let go of dietary restraint as part of the celebrations. Avoid overeating every time the opportunity presents itself. Save overindulgence for Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. A few pig-outs aren’t so bad, but pigging-out all month will cause unhealthy weight gain. The same goes with alcohol, so dilute your spirits and wine with mineral water and ice. Beware of mixers with high-sugar content and don’t drink on an empty stomach! Drink slowly and have some water to avoid dehydration and a build-up of alco-
Sun Protection
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, and 2 in 3 of your friends will be diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their lives. UV radiation is strong enough to cause sunburn in 11 minutes on a fine January day. Stopping sun damage can stop 95% of melanomas – the deadliest form of skin cancer. This summer, protect yourself with this classic Australian advice: SLIP on clothes that cover as much of your skin as possible and consider clothing specifically designed for sun protection.

hol in your blood. December can be a time when people get distracted from an established health and fitness routine. Keep exercising to counter the food you do eat. Walk the dog when the afternoons cool down or take up yoga. Swimming is a treat at this time of year. Start each day with a clean beginning. By drinking a glass of water with fresh lemon you can cleanse your liver, decrease water retention and get an early hit of vitamin C. Christmas can be lonely. It can be a time that exacerbates your troubles – financial problems, relationship breakdowns or severe stress. Stay mindful and take some time out for you to find peace of mind when things get hectic. Seek support from professionals or loved-ones if you feel you need it.
SLOP on some sunscreen. SPF50+ sunscreens filter out 97% of UV radiation if enough sunscreen is used properly. Apply over all areas of exposed skin 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours, sooner if swimming or sweating. SLAP on a hat to protect your face, neck, eyes and ears. SEEK shade, particularly during the hours of 11am to 3pm when the sun’s UV rays are their harshest. SLIDE on some sunnies to avoid cataracts and skin cancers of various tissues of the eye.

‘Tis the Season...
IMAGE: Bev Taylor, Fran French and Jenny Middleton of the CWA at the White Ribbon Morning Tea.
Putting an End to Domestic Violence Canowindra’s CWA held a White Ribbon Day Morning Tea on the front lawn of Montrose House last week, with delicious homemade food provided by the CWA ladies. White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male-led campaign to end men’s violence against women. The vision of White Ribbon is for all women to live in safety, free from all forms of men’s violence. The event was organised by the CWA ladies and two government health specialists after deciding to help spread awareness about ending domestic violence. “Women are the main victims, but we must not forget the men who suffer abuse too. We want to help the person who is the victim – that is the first person we think about,” said Gillian Stone, an organiser of the White Ribbon Day Morning Tea. “We have to think about what we can do to help them.” “There are people in Canowindra who are experiencing fear and they don’t necessarily
tell anybody about it. It needs to be known, by the individual and the family, that something can be done about it,” said Gillian. “It affects the entire family and the children suffer terribly. We were able to put things out into the open, spreading around the thought that it is a serious issue.” “We talked to people passing through, trying to enlighten them on the issue and get them to understand that this is a hidden thing.” “Some people are not going to get together or stop hurting each other. Others might see the light at the end of the tunnel by changing their skills of communication and dealing with issues. They’ve got to talk it through if they can.” “Thanks to Tommy Jeffs for making his garden available for the comfort of those who are trying to help inform and educate people.” By Rosi Broom
For late nights, too much alcohol, too much food, stressful gatherings and family gettogethers, high pressure shopping expeditions and way too much heat AND a joyfilled Christmas! It could all go pear-shaped so easily and it has been known too. So I would like to share with you three “gifts” to help navigate this rocky month smoothly. They are awareness, good choice-making and balance. 1. Awareness – Maybe you have seen the acronym STOP. S - Stop, T - Take a breath, O - Observe and P - Proceed. This pause in our actions can change what we say, do and even feel when things get a little tricky. It takes 30 seconds and can change outcomes entirely. 2. Good Choice Making – this naturally comes from awareness. It is when we STOP that we are better able to make the choice that will not only be good for ourselves, but will also be good for those that it affects. If it isn’t, then there are infinite choices available to us that could be better. Maybe STOP again! 3. Balance – Of course, balance in everything. Eating, drinking, socializing, working, exercising, sleeping. Remember the song,”Turn, Turn, Turn” There is a time for everything and enough time for everything. When we practice awareness and make good choices, there will always be time for all we want to do. Here’s to a wonderful Season, Robyn

The Nutcracker
by Margrete Lamond A little girl is the key to a nutcracker’s freedom. Marie is a romantic child who longs for a friend. When she receives a nutcracker for Christmas, she is immediately captivated by its sorrowful eyes. Her passion for the ugly toy becomes an inspiration for a series of strange and unsettling events that end in heartbreak… but who should be waiting downstairs? Margrete Lamond’s retelling of Hoffman’s classic tale reduces the rambling original to its essentials, while satisfying the modern taste for strong emotion-based storylines. Ritva Voutila’s paintings bring the magic, wonder and terror of childhood imagination to life, and set the action against a lavish Victorian backdrop that both enthrals and reassures the reader. This is a classic treasure for all ages and every bookshelf. Margrete, who lives in Stuart Town, will be at Collins Booksellers Orange on Saturday 5 December 11.00-1.00pm to sign her books. She will be showing some original prints from the book. Collins Booksellers Orange have a great selection of Christmas books for gifts or for your holiday reading – see our Christmas Reading Guide 2015. Cornerstone’s 38th Muster
Cornerstone Community Canowindra is hosting the 38th Cornerstone Muster on December 5-6. Muster is an annual event celebrating the year of achievement and growth by Cornerstone members and students. Muster is a time for rethinking life and purpose. This year’s Muster theme is “God in a secular vacuum”, considering the challenge of living in a society that no longer regards the Christian story as central. Cornerstone Community has provided training to young Australians at Canowindra Training Campus for the past 25 years and has appreciated the friendship and support of the community. Leaders and students invite and welcome friends and those interested in learning more about Cornerstone to join us for Muster. Commencing at 9am at Canowindra High School with a family concert on the Saturday evening, this is a rich time where those gifted in music, poetry and other creative expressions can allow all present to enjoy their talents. There is no charge to attend Muster, but please register for catering purposes. Contact Sue Hodge.

CATCH of the week
Bracing For An Expensive Summer Canowindra residents are encouraged to review their current energy contract to ensure they are on the most cost effective plan ahead of summer. According to iSelect, 58% of NSW households report that their energy bills have increased over the past 12 months. The energy comparison service carried out a survey, finding that a quarter of NSW households are having to cut back on other areas in order to pay their energy bills. The survey also suggested that around 190,000 NSW households have been on a hardship program in the last 2 years. Laura Crowden, iSelect spokesperson,

said with an above-average summer forecasted, it is likely many Canowindra households will continue to feel the heat when it comes to energy bills this summer. “Most of us are prepared for large winter energy bills but higher than expected bills during summer can often take us by surprise,” Laura said. “Keeping air conditioners running around the clock and the extra energy consumed by Canowindra kids at home using TVs, computers and air-con during the school holidays can result in summer energy bill shock.” Save energy by setting the air conditioner above 23 degrees, using fans which only cost about 2c per hour to run, keeping the cool air in and the hot air out with curtains and turn off appliances at the power point before going on holiday. Also take advantage of the summer sunshine and BBQ outdoors as often as possible to avoid using the oven and making your home even hotter.
