Canowindra Dresses up For Christmas Thanks to Cabonne Council who are sponsoring the shop decoration competition in Canowindra this Christmas, with $1500 in prizes to be won. This is a great initiative for all of the local businesses and even better, the winners get to spend their money back in the town, with the three prizes of $500 each being made up of vouchers from local businesses of their choice. Many of the local businesses have already decorated their windows and this gives a very festive air to the town, as well as ensuring people realise that Christmas is just around the corner. The addition of the local Santas on top of buildings and on the entrance to town from every side, makes the

town suddenly seem like Christmas is just around the corner. This initiative follows on from the successful Christmas in July best dressed window competition, co-ordinated by the Phoenix. The displays will be judged the week of Christmas and winners notified thereafter, with judges decision being final. If you haven’t already decorated your window, get out and buy some great decorations to dress them up and as the saying goes, ‘you need to be in in to win it’. It is also, worth a drive around town too see the decorated houses as some look like Christmas wonderlands!

LETTERS Dera Editor,

phone l (02) 6344 1846

The organisers of the Canowindra Christmas Shopping Evening would like to extend many thanks to the business people and community of Canowindra. Support and attendance for the event was fantastic, which gives us much confidence for next year. Special thanks to Cheryl and the team at the Canowindra Phoenix for assistance in promotion and planning. Thanks also to Johnny Lawrence, Anthony Cahill, Canowindra Preschool, Eddy Wilkinson and the Canowindra Business Chamber. The aim of the evening was to encourage people to shop locally this Christmas, and initial results indicate that this was hugely successful. It is hoped that this event will grow steadily over the years, so anyone wishing to provide constructive feedback, or indeed assist in organising next year’s event can do so via the Business Chamber.

Gaskill Street Beautification

I am sure that you have all seen the wonderful renovations in the main street at The River Bank Gallery, now renamed as Montrose House. Tommy Jeffs, from Deli Lama has spent around 3 months completely renovating the old gallery and making it his home, as well as a bed and breakfast and hosting many parties, private dinners and high teas. This, in addition to the renovation on Saffi’s building which included a new awning and new support posts has given the street a whole new fresh look and feel. Now, some of the other businesses after discussions with Tommy have started a mini beautification program of the main street. This will include the outside of the Canowindra Phoenix building being painted, Billy Paul’s Carpet Centre with a fresh new art deco look (yes, even Janice was surprised when Billy agreed!) and John and Stephanie Watson at The Royal Hotel

have painted the upstairs verandahs on the inside and their next project will be painting the front of the hotel. When Dale Jones, Cabonne Council representative was in town last week Tommy spoke to him about the replacement of the roof over the shops opposite Montrose House and if a grant was available, Tommy has offered to pay for the paint and the painters to paint the poles. Dale is going to look into this for Canowindra and will come back to Tommy in the New Year. Like any town, any improvement is welcome, and these sorts of additions, and repairs can only be good for the future tourism of this small village. Some of the feedback from the visitors that have been in town recently has been really positive as evidenced by the positive results from the Christmas Shopping night held recently. By Cheryl Newsom

IMAGE: Luke Whitty in action at the “Galwary” clearing sale on Saturday

Clearing Sale Success for KMWL Kevin Miller, Whitty, Lennon and Co conducted a very successful clearing sale last Saturday at “Galwary”, Eugowra. Vendors Ian and Anne Burns and property manager Colin O’Connor presented a quality line up of farm machinery, sheep handling equipment and workshop tools which had been used during their 12 year ownership of “Galwary”. There were a total of 160 bidders who registered on the day, having travelled from as far afield as Bourke, Merrygoen, Dunedoo, Trangie, West Wyalong, Young, Yass, Crookwell and Bathurst, as well as the local

area. Those who attended recognised the wellmaintained condition of the items, and with many lots in as new condition, some strong prices were recorded throughout the sale. With a large crowd of buyers and quality items, a total clearance of all lots was also achieved. And as with most clearing sales, it was also a good day out for the locals to catch up and grab a steak sandwich to support the Eugowra Lions Club, who manned the barbeque. By Brendan Mansbridge

Come on down with friends and family

Summer is here and the weather is heating up which makes me think of the clothing options that will keep us girls cool this summer. I carry a lot of Australian clothing in store, one in particular being Goondiwindi Cotton. Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Sam from Goondiwindi Cotton. My husband and I took the kids on a road trip through the north west of NSW and the south west of Queensland. Sam took us on a tour of his cotton farms and explained to us how the cotton is grown, picked and prepared for production. I found the whole concept fascinating and it put into perspective how important it is to support these farmers. The cotton they produce is the best in the world. They produce a cotton called Pima which is the best quality you can get. Goondiwindi Cotton has had a new designer for the last couple of years and she has really focused on using natural blends of cotton and linens. The quality of her range is second to none and I carry a lot of this label in my shop simply because it washes well and the price is right. About 8 years ago I was in the market for great cool cotton shirting and found it impossible to find a great shirt that didn’t have polyester in it. After lots of thought my dad and I decided to make our own shirts. These shirts have been extremely popular because women simply want a cool shirt with a collar and a sleeve. Last season we also did a cool cotton/linen dress with a sleeve and collar which walked out the door. In store we also have a great range of cotton linen dresses in bright colours and prints. Our cotton shirts this season come in pastels and brights as well as great prints and paisleys. I would also would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. To see this year out with a bang I am having a draw in the shop this month. Spend $100.00 in store to go into the draw for a $1000.00 gift voucher drawn on Christmas Eve. My ranges for next season are the best I have seen. Simply stunning clothing will be flowing through my doors in February and wouldn’t $1000.00 to spend be amazing. What fun!! Love Kendal x

A wide range of sporting, cultural, arts and culinary events in Regional NSW will benefit from a funding boost from the NSW Government, after successfully applying for funding from the $500,000 available in the 2016 Regional Flagship Events Program. Canowindra Balloon Challenge has been selected to receive triennial funding of $20,000 per year for three years, and this money will be used specifically to market the event. Destination NSW as part of their ongoing strategy has a plan to double the number of stays per night right across regional NSW. Jan Kerr, responsible for Media Marketing, sponsorship and Grants for the Balloon Challenge said, “This grant shows that Destination NSW has confidence we are putting on a really good event, not only for the public attending, but also for the balloonists as well. The Challenge is a huge drawcard on the Canowindra calendar each year and was started for two reasons; one to give balloonists an opportunity to fly in a competition to ensure that they can compete on the world stage, and the second reason was to bring people to Canowindra from which the whole community, retailers and district would benefit.” Dale Jones, Cabonne Council Communications Manager said, ‘Cabonne Council are very pleased that Destination NSW are committing to support this event for the next 3 years!’ The event is taking place from the 9th to 14th April, after Easter, so save the date in your calendar now! What a whirlwind it has been since opening the doors of Montrose House from our very successful opening party to our fabulous High Tea held on Sunday afternoon for the who’s, who’s of the Canowindra Historical Society enjoying a sumptuous high tea. I have had lots of Christmas parties, lunches, even a group from the Orange Probus Club where I encouraged them to arrive earlier to enable them to wander the shops prior to lunch. With only two weeks to go until Christmas, I have several of the schools having their end of year teachers get together, a 60th birthday for well known local, Vicki Davies, the Meals on Wheels crew, and on Saturday night we had the group from the local Fire Brigade. One of the most interesting things that I have found is that I am drawing people from all around the Central West, from Cudal, Orange, Parkes and Cowra, and it was obviously something that was needed. There were 26 ladies who attended the first lunch for the 1st Wives Club. In case you are wondering, this is a club for widows and divorcees, and it is a great place to meet new and interesting people on a common ground. It is open to new members, so the next lunch for The Club will be in January, the last Thursday of the month. There will be a prominent local lady as guest speaker. I would like to thank everybody for their love and support and look forward to a year full of surprises and adventures. Watch this space! Merry Xmas and Happy New Year. Tommy

Recognition for Historical Society Patrons Over 40 members of the Canowindra Historical Society, from as far afield as Orange and Cowra, gathered on Sunday for High Tea at “Montrose House”, to celebrate the end of another successful year for the Historical Society, and to give special recognition to the Society’s Patrons : Berna Wright, Gwen Wythes, Dorothy Balcomb, and John Farley. In anticipation of the AGM in early 2016, Audrey Farley was also announced as a Patron, and honoured on the day. Tommy Jeffs prepared a magnificent “High Tea” and also spoke of the family significance in the name “Montrose House” he has given the former bank building.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

This year is the 100th anniversary of the building and opening of this former Bank of NSW (and later Westpac) that stands so grandly in Gaskill St, and Jan Harrison provided an informative and interesting talk on this history. In moving a vote of thanks to the Patrons, President Ross Cleary mentioned their significant contributions to the published histories of many aspects of this town and district, and to the strength of the collections in the Museum, and the care of this valuable collection. Their work has set a standard that the Historical Society strives to maintain and enhance into the future.

TRADES & SERVICES

The Anglican and Uniting Churches of Canowindra and surrounding districts.

It has been confirmed Canowindra will not be hosting the 100 Mile Dinner in 2016, which is disappointing news for the food lovers in our town and surrounding villages. “We will not be hosting a 100 mile dinner in 2016,” a media release from Canowindra @ Home said, “the good news is we probably will host one in 2017.” “We all know how much you love the event and we all love hosting it but in 2016 we will have to content ourselves with one of the other great local food events.” Canowindra@home operate, host or participate in a number of exciting food related events each year. So that everybody can keep up with what’s happening they have decided to create a calendar of events for the whole year. If you have a food related event for consideration for inclusion in the calendar please send this through. Many of Canowindra’s much-loved annual events with a focus on food will be returning in 2016, including Windowrie’s Long Lunch in October, the Twilight Market on the October long weekend, and Wallington Wines Blessing of the Harvest.

Swimming Club Swimming Club was well attended on Dec 4th, with some great performances proving that training pays off, and participation is key to success. In the 100m backstroke PB’s were recorded by Julia Wright, Amber Johnson and Stewart Russell. Notable mentions in the 50m Butterfly go to Brooke Kinsela and Josie Clements. The 25m freestyle saw Wade Kinsela, Finlay Rowston and Paul Sinfield record sub-15 second times, whilst most improved were Mary Talbot and Laura Cox. Great swims in 25m Breaststroke were made by Alex Flannery, Alexander Mitchell, Magnus Cleary and Toby Fisher, while good improvements were made in the 50m Breaststroke by Damon McKay, Mila Gower and Cameron Wheeler. There are only two more meets before the Christmas break. All swimmers are encouraged to participate in the relay, as it is a fun way to end each Swimming Club meet. As usual, many thanks go to organisers, time keepers and helpers.
