Sam Brand is awarded Young Citizen of the Year in Cargo Sam is only 11 years old and has already shown himself as an individual who wants to make a difference. In 2015 Sam decided to mount a fund raising challenge for himself to raise $500 for the ‘Give Me 5 for Kids’ charity, because in Sam’s words, “life is not so easy for some kids.” At the end of his fundraising Sam had shaved his head and handing over a staggering $4600 to the above charity, all of which he single handedly raised. Congratulations to Sam, he is an inspiration and role model to all who know him, he is a credit to Cargo and to his family.

My House My Home New Year’s Resolutions Around the Home Now is the time after the kids go back to school when we start to make lists of everything that we need to catch up on around our homes and gardens. Comparethemarket.com.au has identified the top 7 and sometimes most surprising risks to the average home this summer. 1. Leaving your house vacant – ensure that if you are away for more than 60 days you let your insurance company know and always let neighbours know your movements so that they can keep an eye out for your property. 2. Ensure your house is properly maintained, including gutters being cleaned and roofs clear. 3. If you have precious statues or even gnomes in your garden, make sure that they are protected by insurance in case someone decides to pilfer them. 4. Don’t let your home get eaten alive from pest infestations, as prevention is the only way to deal with them. 5. Don’t be ruined by renovations – ensure if you are renovating that you have appropriate legal liability in place. 6. Ensure that your spas and above ground pools are well maintained and insured to cover damage 7. Don’t clutter your yard with trailers, caravans or boats as they add to your fire risk. If you are looking to smarten up your house why not celebrate with Cowra Paint Plus and Phill’s Blinds & Awnings who are offering an awesome 20% off all their Haymes Ultra Premium range of paints. This special will run through till the end of January so
be quick and come and make a massive saving on all your painting needs. This includes paint for the outdoors, indoors and also Haymes Woodcare products so don’t miss out. These paints are ideal for decks and any outside area. With the long hot days of summer continuing, it is not too late to create your own shade with some quality blinds, awnings, shutters or curtains. Come and see their large showroom showcasing these products. A free measure and quote is offered along with quality service and advice and it doesn’t end there, they service what they sell. My House My Home How to Look After your Garden after a Sudden Downpour Hot temperatures in the summer are notorious for producing strong thunderstorms. These thunderstorms can contain torrential downpours, high winds, and even hail. All of these ingredients can wreck a vegetable garden in minutes by causing plant damage, soil erosion, plant diseases, and flooding. It can be difficult, maybe even impossible to protect precious vegetables from the wrath of Mother Nature, but here are a few tips for what to do after a heavy thunderstorm. 1. Survey any plant damage. Take a survey of any leaf or stem damage that may
have occurred. If there is minimal damage to leaves, you may be able to just remove them. Try to stake up plants that are now leaning. If the main stem of a plant has snapped then more than likely it is a loss. You can try grafting the stem back together. 2. Try to avoid walking right next to the plants while the soil is saturated. 3. Check for any exposed roots due to soil erosion. If you find exposed roots, cover them with soil or compost. 4. After a very heavy rain you may need to replenish nutrients. Replenish these

nutrients with fish emulsion or an organic all-purpose fertilizer. 5. During the storm (or soon after) look for areas that may be draining poorly. 6. Eliminate possible slug or snail hiding places. 7. Keep an eye on emerging weeds. Weeds love to pop up soon after a storm. 8. Empty any containers that have collected water. These are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. 9. Keep an eye out for fungal or bacterial diseases. Treat these diseases as soon as they are noticed.

Early Rains Bring on Spraying for Weeds
Brad O’Reilly, Agronomist at Canowindra Produce said that whilst the early rain of last week brought some welcome relief, and improved the soil moisture content, it has also increased the weeds coming through. For most farmers this means ensuring that weeds are kept at a minimum by spraying with something like roundup, and keeping the paddocks clean until the end of February when we can start sowing some feed oats. This is a good time to have your soil tested so that you can plan what your fertiliser requirements are and if possible getting in early by placing an order with your local suppliers. Brad said, “I conduct the soil testing out in the field, so it is best to ring and make an appointment on 02 6344 1504.”
Polaris ATV’s and Side x Sides the Number One Choice for Aussie Buyers

RURAL ROUNDUP First Online Auction for Regional Australia Rural Real Estate
To wrap up the end of 2015, Ray White Rural Forbes held an auction at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on the 16th December 2015. There were two attractive rural properties going up for auction on the day and this ensured that there was a great crowd in attendance. This auction created a number of firsts for the group at Ray White Rural, as it was the first online auction conducted in regional Australia by the Ray White group. The results have been impressive as this online auction enabled prospective buyers and bidders to log onto their computers, smart phones and iPads to participate in the auction, or to simply view the proceedings online. Buyers can now bid from the comfort of their own home, and indeed, buyers from around the world are able to be involved. “Tingarra” Forbes sold under the hammer with a very happy vendor and a successful purchaser. At the moment “Sunnyside” Grenfell which was passed in on the day is open for further negotiation. It was a great experience for the team at Ray White Rural Forbes and something that they will be involved in in the future as they take more properties to auction. Ian Simpson, Director said he was “pleased with the results on the day and added that he can see the online auctions becoming a regular feature of property sales in the future.”
Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update
Week ending: 22 January 2016 The Australian wool market held firm this week in the face of the largest national offering in five years. 59,775 bales were offered, with a clearance rate of 96.3%. Despite the large volume and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Chinese economy the AWEX-NRI recorded a weekly rise of 12c to close at 1326. The sale opened on Tuesday with mixed results, fine merino fleece found extra support while the medium to broader MPG’s closed a little softer. Wednesday’s market saw clearer signals emerge with most sectors moving in sellers favour. Thursday’s market continued to strengthen with most MPG’s recording 10-15cent increases. Cross breds also held up extremely well on a large offering (which accounted for 26.9% of the overall volume). By the close of trade it was only the 30 micron indicator that closed in the red, losing 5cents for the week. Week 31 Sales will be held in all centres on Wednesday and Thursday due to a national Public Holiday on Tuesday 26th January.
The Local Stock Markets
At the local cattle sale in Forbes on Monday 25th, there were 1204 cattle yarded. Competition in a much lighter offering was stronger and yearlings prices improved. Feeder steers were 3 to 5c a kilo better and prime grades lifted by as much as 10c. Heavy steers remained fully firm as did the better cows.

COMPUTER Bytes I do hope everyone enjoyed a safe and memorable holiday! If your PC, whether new or old, has had a good workout over the holiday period then a service may be a good thing to look at. If you have younger people using your PC it will likely require a spruce up. For those with High School students starting back cleaning up your PC is especially important. In regards to High School BYOD (Bring your own device) if you haven’t organised something yet feel free to have a chat with me. I have heard from some that Windows 7 devices are preferred and contrary to belief they can still be purchased new. Be very picky with tablets as the cheaper units may not meet the standards required so check the specification list that the High School may have issued. By Chris Gregory

Lovely Lavender
How long have you lived in or around Canowindra? Around 4 years Why did you move here? For the lifestyle Where do you work? I run the local swimming classes, Just Keep Swimming at Canowindra Pool over summer. I have just started as the School Learning Support Officer at Canowindra Public School What do you love most about your Swimming classes? Watching the children learn and grow and gain confidence in their swimming. Why did you start the classes? I was looking for somewhere to send my children to and realised that there was a need for swimming lessons to be held locally to save people from travelling. How do you feel at the end of the day after swimming? Exhausted, although happy with what we have all achieved for the day. What do you do in your spare time? Spend time with my family and friends. What makes your day? Waking up each morning in the country.

Lavender is a plant much valued across the world for its fragrance, flower colour and hardiness and it is well suited to dry, temperate climates such as we have in many parts of our region. There are three main types of lavender - English (Lavandula angustifolia), French (L. dentata) and Spanish (L. stoechas). English lavender, including cultivars such as Hidcote and Munstead, are compact plants (to about 60cm high) with grey/green narrow leaves. The flowers are generally deep purple and are produced in summer. They are popular as edging plants for garden beds because of their compact growth form. French lavender has greener, softer serrated leaves and grows a little taller than English forms. They also flower for longer, especially if you give them a light prune after the first phase of flowers are spent. The flowers are generally lighter colour (blue) than the English forms. Spanish lavender, including the cultivar Avonview, are also long flowering and are regarded as having perhaps the showiest flowers with dark purple bracts which stick up like rabbits’ ears. I have a few mounds of Avonview lavender growing in my garden that were covered in bright purple flowers in early summer and are beginning to have their second round of flowering now. There are many cultivars of the different lavender types-including white flowering forms of English and Spanish and a new pink flowering cultivar called “The Princess”. Lavender plants will grow best in full sun, well drained soil and are relatively pest and disease free. The main problem I hear from gardeners is that their lavender has grown tall, woody and untidy. To avoid this, give them a trim after flowering every year-cutting back the spent flower stems and probably about one third of the green foliage. Don’t cut back into woody stems. Moyne Aged Care Plus Makes Staffing Changes Twelve hospitality employees at Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre in Canowindra have had their positions made redundant, due to a decision by The Salvation Army Aged Care Plus to use external hospitality providers across all Aged Care Plus services where possible, for catering, cleaning and laundry, which will result in improved services to the residents. Kate Callaghan, Aged Care Plus Acting CEO said, “We recognise the valuable contribution these employees have made in providing hospitality services for our residents and understand this can be a difficult time. We acknowledge the commitment and dedication our employees show in an effort to improve the lives of local older

The redundancy payments offered to these employees take into consideration their length of service with Aged Care Plus.” “One employee has been redeployed within their current workplace and all of the remaining employees have applied for positions with the new provider, and almost all have been offered a position to date.” Kate said, “around 95% of our employees are members of the local community and the new contractors also share this passion for the local community and are recruiting locally.” The implementation day for the new provider to commence is Wednesday 27th January.

With a spate of break-ins and malicious damage occurring to property in the local area, it is important to remain vigilant at all times. At Eugowra on the weekend, local butchers, Bill and Helen Turner lost approximately $4,000 worth of meat. The thieves broke into the back of their shop, knocking in a door and taking off with the goods. It is believed that they escaped in a white utility and police are now investigating. In Canowindra, police are investigating a report of malicious damage where 5 golf carts, golf markers and a retaining wall were damaged at Canowindra Golf Club. The incident occurred sometime during the afternoon of Saturday 23 January 2016. If you have any information about either of these two incidents, please call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Dance in the New Year with Alikinetic Alikinetic Dance Canowindra is now in its 6th year and has more classes on offer than ever. As well as Jazz/Contemporary and Tap dance classes we now have Acrobatics/Gymnastics for Dance and Booty Camp Workout sessions on offer. Acrobatics classes provide dancers with the opportunity and time to learn, practice and master individual, partner and group acrobatic stunts which can then be used in Jazz or Contemporary dances to give the final production an exciting new twist. The Booty Camp workout is for teens and adults who wish to become fit, toned and
flexible with a low impact, high intensity fitness program. We use dance-based exercises to focus on strengthening and stretching each muscle group, creating a long, lean dancers body. At Alikinetic Dance our main focus is to have fun while learning new things and students are encouraged to have creative input into choreography and costumes, and performances. New enrolments are always welcome, please contact Ali for more information or to enroll in classes. Ph: 0439 185 066 Facebook: Alikinetic Dance. Happy Dancing!

We have everything you need for out at the Dam! The Canowindra Tigers will start their season with a light training run followed by a BBQ on Friday the 29th of January. This is a chance for all three teams to meet their coaches and committee for the upcoming 2016 season. I am hoping the new club training singlets will arrive by then. There will be a small fee of $15-20 to cover the cost of the new club training singlets which should hopefully arrive by this date. All teams will commence full training on Wednesday 3rd February and Fridays from then onwards. The girls will be training Tuesday and Friday’s until junior cricket is over. Hope to see you all there.
