The highly anticipated Charlie McCarron auction at Canowindra Motors will now start on Friday, September 30, after an unprecedented level of interest.
Extra Day Added To Charlie McCarron Auction
An unprecedented level of interest in Canowindra Motors owner Charlie McCarron’s auction in October has forced auction company Burns & Co to add an extra day to the already huge weekend. With thousands of people expected to converge on Canowindra for the October long weekend, Burns & Co have made the decision to start the auction on Friday September 30, instead of Saturday, October 1, as was originally planned. With the cataloguing of the auction still being completed, the times that the auction will run have not been confirmed yet, however each day of the auction will be split into a different number of lots. Around 300 lots of items will be auctioned on the Friday, and Saturday will be the biggest day of the weekend, with around 1000 lots being auctioned then.
The Sunday will see around 400 lots auctioned, and exact lot numbers will be confirmed once the cataloguing is complete. The Friday and Saturday lots will all be offered from Charlie McCarron’s workshop on Gaskill Street, and the Sunday offering will be held at the Canowindra Showgrounds. Friday’s offering will be posters, Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) parts, accessories and some other small items, while Saturday will be inferior motor vehicles, parts and workshop items. Sunday will be more workshop items, vehicle manuals, boxes of brochures, more posters, and around 60 motor vehicles. Burns & Co agent Ashley Burns said the final catalogue would be available by the end of August. By Joshua Matic

Nyrang Creek Hall To Canowindra Men’s Shed The hall used since the early 2000s as the Canowindra Men’s Shed has an interesting history both before and after it was moved to Canowindra in 1960 to be renovated as the Scout and Guide Hall. Nyrang Creek grew as a settlement along the road surveyed in 1862 from Forbes, via Eugowra, in the gold rush days. The fertile lands attracted free selectors who flocked to the district from 1865. By the early 1900s, Nyrang Creek was the centre of a closely settled farming community. In 1911, Nyrang Creek Public Hall was opened with due ceremony as a centre for social functions. Thomas Mobbs Jnr built it with much voluntary labour and fundraising. Dave McCarron was the first secretary and Tom Bassett the first treasurer. It was a basic unlined, corrugated iron building in the days before electricity and very cold in winter with the only heating a small open fireplace in the attached kitchen. The hall was also used as a school from 1935
to 1941 and continued as a community centre until the early 1950s when it fell into disuse. In September 1960, it was moved in one piece into Canowindra by Neville and Ross Bowd of Bowd’s Transport on the back of their GMC low loader. After much fundraising, the hall was clad and renovated as the Scout and Guide Hall. After both Scout and Guide movements closed in Canowindra, it had various uses as a shop until its third life as The Men’s Shed.
The Canowindra Men’s Shed was once located in Nyrang Creek, and was transported by truck to Canowindra in the 60s.

Felix Rams – It’s All About The Lambs Felix Rams has a singular focus on producing efficient and profitable prime lambs by breeding high performance, structurally sound meat sheep rams. Their commitment to collecting good accurate performance data is second to none. Did you know for example that since 2000 they have weighed more than 19,000 lambs within 12 hours of birth? It is little wonder that a Felix client recently claimed – “you’ve solved our lambing problems”. They use birthweights, Lambplan breeding values for birthweight and lambing ease to help eliminate the production of rams that sire lambs with excessively high or low birthweights. High birthweights cause lambing problems, while birthweights that are too low impact on lamb survival. At Felix Rams the priority is quick early growth, and maturity, not maximum adult ram size. Their rams won’t be the biggest you will buy, because great big rams are almost certainly late maturing rams. Felix Rams will efficiently produce a 22-28 kg lamb. Early maturity also helps getting your suckers to hit the target year in year out. Over the last five years Felix Rams has been committed to DNA testing potential young sires for yield and eating quality with over 300 animals tested. Every sire used in the last three years has had breeding values for these traits, and eating quality and yield have been included in the mating matrix. Felix Rams provides Lambplan breeding values for every ram sold, allowing lamb producers to buy on specification to suit their production system. This is particularly important for birthweight and fat cover, where one ram doesn’t suit everybody or every system. Producers who buy their rams can select on these traits to fit their business, and at the same time be confident that they are continually making progress on growth rate, eye muscle depth, worm resistance, yield and eating quality. Felix Rams will offer around 140 Poll Dorset and 45 White Suffolk rams at their annual on-property sale at Greenethorpe on September 6th. Catalogues available at www.felixrams.com.au from August 25, or call Rodney on 0417 499 204, or the selling agents, Allan Gray and Co Cowra, on 02 6342 2377.

This week’s sale saw just over 41,000 bales offered. The fleece market opened on a softer tone however regained as buyer interest increased to close the day only marginally lower than the previous week. A highlight in the Jemalong catalogue was when one of the buyers interrupted the sale midway through to announce they wished to pay a premium on the lots they had purchased, as recognition and reward for outstanding clip preparation. Such an initiative, while rarely seen, is always welcome and is an endorsement on what the trade have been reporting for some time, and that is ‘that well prepared wools are becoming very hard to source’, especially in the crossbred catalogues. Throughout both days well-prepared wools with excellent specs were highly sought after and commanded significant premiums. Low VM Skirtings also continued to sell well while locks and crutchings generally traded at similar rates to the previous sale.
VC Reid and Sons held a successful pig sale in Forbes last Friday, August 19, with 704 pigs being sold off, prices trending well. The sale saw pork, bacon and backfatter pigs sold off, with the price trend on the backfatter pigs and bacon pigs holding firm compared with recent sales, however pork was on the rise. On average, compared with recent sales, pork trended between $5 and $10 per head dearer, in what was good news for pork breeders. The prices per head of each pig ranged depending on breed and size at the sale, with weaners starting as the cheapest, selling from between $55-$130 per head. The next lowest price range was in the bacon category, selling for between $120 and $160 per head, while heavy bacon had a much larger range, selling for between $150 and $375 per head. In the pork category, light pork sold for between $136 and $188 per head, while heavy pork came in slightly dearer at $168-$209 per head. Moving up the price scale were the backfatters, with light backfatters selling for between $120.60 and $221.34. The best selling pigs on the day were the heavy backfatters. These sold from a big $420.60 per head at the lower end of the scale, while the biggest selling heavy backfatters sold for $524.86. Heavy rainfalls across the winter season have seen livestock prices trend upwards across the Central West over the past few months, and this trend is tipped by many livestock experts to keep up in the foreseeable future. VC Reid and Sons Forbes hold a sale each fortnight, and are the expert livestock sales agents for all pigs.

RURAL ROUNDUP Helping Rural Australians
Rural Australians are being asked to help raise awareness of depression, anxiety and suicide prevention in their communities and help to reduce the associated stigma. Australia loses around eight people a day to suicide, and over a year, suicide deaths are double that of the national road toll. Too many people who die by suicide are from farming communities across Australia. In an effort to support good mental health and reduce suicide rates across rural Australia, leading animal health company Zoetis has become a Supporting Partner of beyondblue, and has launched a campaign to help raise awareness and much needed funds. For every Zoetis cattle or sheep vaccine or drench sold by Zoetis between 1 August and 30 October 2016, Zoetis will donate $5 to beyondblue, up to a total of $100,000. “Zoetis is passionate about supporting hard-working regional Australians. There is not one person in our organisation who hasn’t had some exposure to mental health issues and this drives our need to ensure this campaign with beyondblue is a success,” said Zoetis General Manager Lance Williams. Although the incidence of psychological distress and symptoms of mental health conditions are similar between major cities and rural areas, suicide rates are higher in regional, rural and remote areas. “Every community experiences ups and downs, but when you get another issue that arises on top of daily challenges, whether it is prolonged drought, flood or fire, the impact on many rural families is severe,” said beyondblue Chairman The Hon. Jeff Kennett AC. For more information about anxiety, depression and suicide, please visit www.beyondblue.org.au or call the 24/7 beyondblue Support Service on 1300 224 636.

d Get your Daeat... something gr Father’s Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday in September, which coincides with the first Sunday of Spring. Father’s Day is a celebration honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day) since the Middle Ages. This celebration was brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America, where March 19 is often still used for it, though many countries in Europe and the Americas have adopted the US date which is the third Sunday of June. In the US, Father’s Day has been celebrated since the early 20th century. This Father’s Day in the Canowindra region, many families will be treating Dad to a special day where he might just be able to kick back, relax and enjoy a sensational day. Around the Central West there are some great ideas for gifts, including a brand new camera at The Complete Camera House in Orange. They are also offering 30% off personalised mugs, in store and online. By Joshua Matic

Dan Ebert, Gary and Julie Fairley, Malcolm Millar, Leahlie, Amahni and Emmeline Nicka at the Canowindra Preschool Fun Day golf fundraiser last Saturday at the Canowindra Golf Club.
Preschool Fun Day A Success
On Saturday August 20 the Canowindra Golf Club hosted a special fundraiser day for Canowindra Preschool. Around 30 players took part on the day in cool conditions, in both the nine hole and 18 hole Ambrose competitions. As the aim of the day was just to have some fun, winners were not those with the highest nett score, but those with the score closest to that randomly selected by the Canowindra Golf Club committee. As part of the fun, each team that entered had to have at least one child or female in the team, otherwise face a hefty handicap. The nine-hole competition was won by C Bligh, P Bligh, K Chinnich and D Slattery, while the 18 hole competition was won by J Fairley, G Fairley, D Ebert, and M Millar.
The longest drive winner was Nadine Daley, and the nearest to pin winner was D Skipper. The golf bag raffle winner was Dan Ebert and the lamb raffle winner was Fergus Townsend. All in all it was a good day, with a total of $867 raised for the Canowindra Preschool. A big thank you must go to everyone that helped make the day work out, and a special thanks must go to to David and Christina Rice, who sponsored the golf prizes. Thank you also to Tony Grant for the lamb donation, and the Canowindra Bottle Shop for their kind donation. It was greatly appreciated. Malcolm Millar, Canowindra Golf Club President.

First of all, what is financial independence? It means having enough money to pay your living expenses for the rest of your life without having to work. There are many ways to make this happen, but for most of us it’s going to come about from paying off our mortgage and accumulating enough super and investments to one day be able to afford to stop working and pay ourselves a decent income. Sadly though, most people will never achieve financial independence and for the majority, that is for one simple reason – A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. This is something everyone can change quickly. Most of us have a long working life before we retire and will earn a relative fortune over that time. However, much of it slips through our fingers because no one teaches us the things we need to do to make our money work hard for us (or charge huge amounts to do it for us). Financial independence is within your grasp and the reality is that the sooner you start doing something about it, the easier it will be to attain. And believe me, it’s not just for the wealthy. It’s all about what you spend, not what you earn. Most of us know we need to be doing something to get ahead financially but aren’t sure what to do and how to get started… or who to trust. At Wealth Train, we believe the BEST PERSON to make decisions about your money IS YOU. That’s why we are teaching people like you the proven strategies to create and protect wealth to give you the best chance possible to achieve financial independence. Don’t waste another minute! Cheers, Daniel

Beware Of Maureen Lawrence long have you lived in or around Ransomware Trojans How Canowindra? I have lived in this region
There has been quite a few people affected by Ransomware Trojans of late, so please be very wary of clicking on links and attachments in emails, also be careful regarding which websites you visit. If your PC is attacked what happens is that your data files (Photos & Documents) are encrypted and you will see files and messages that offer to fix this at a huge cost. Hence, the name Ransomware but usually people don’t always get their files back if they do pay the ransom. It is always a good idea to make a backup of your precious data files before this happens, you can do that on an external USB drive or USB disk but keep it unconnected from your PC once done. Better still, Windows can create backups using its built in tool to a USB Disk.

all of my life, except for the five years that I lived in Blacktown with my brother. What do you enjoy about living in this region? I love the community and lifestyle. I couldn’t see myself living anywhere else. Five years in Blacktown, Sydney, was enough! What do you do for a living? I do hands on work and office work on our farm, and I work on the family stud as well. What do you enjoy most about your work? I love doing this work, as I am able to do it in my own time. I don’t have to be anywhere by a certain time. How do you like your coffee? I like to have my coffee with milk and one sugar. Where would your dream holiday be to? My dream holiday would be to somewhere warm- anywhere in Queensland this time of the year.

Almost all of us have shady spots in the garden where it’s hard to get plants to do well, let alone produce beautiful colour. This month I wanted to highlight plants that do well in shade-whether that’s on the south side of the house, under trees or areas overshadowed by fences or neighbouring buildings. Starting with evergreen flowering shrubs, my favourites for shady spots are daphne, japonica camellias, kalmia (mountain laurel), rhododendrons, pieris (Christmas cheer and forest flame) and azaleas. There is also a pink flowering native shrub, Correa dusky bells, that handles shade well. For winter colour in a shady spot, it’s hard to go past hellebores or winter roses. The most common type, Helleborus orientalis, throws up spikes of pink/purple/dark red flowers that generally face downwards. A newer cultivar, Hellebore Honeyhill Joy, produces beautiful clumps of green/white flowers-I’ve got a ripper one of these flowering now in a shady patch of my garden. For groundcovers suited to shady spots, one of the hardiest plants is Lamium (common name deadnettle). They come in a range of leaf colours from dark green, to yellow and variegated, and with flowers from white to pink and dark purple. Ajuga Catlins Giant is another groundcover doing well in shady parts of my garden-the leaves are glossy dark purple and they produce spikes of blue flowers in spring. Polemonium (Jacobs ladder) is another shade loving groundcover. Other perennials that do well in shade, die back in winter but burst forth with colour in spring and summer include hydrangeas (look for the beautiful lace cap flowering “Strawberries and Cream”), Aquilegia (Columbines), Hostas and Japanese windflowers (Anemone) which produce tall spikes of white or pink flowers. Finally, if you’re looking for some strappy leaf plants that are hardy and will tolerate shade, you should consider Dianella (native flax lily) and Lomandra. By Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

The theme this year was Australia – Story Country, and all children were encouraged to dress up each day as their favourite character from a book and bring that book along with them to Pre School. On Monday Meg Jobson read Koala Lou by Mem Fox, and on Tuesday and Wednesday Anne Ward and Tommy Jeffs made guest appearances respectively, reading stories and dressing up at the same time. Thursday will see St Edwards Primary School students come in to read to the children, and on Friday, the Community Reading Day will take place at Canowindra Public School. The Preschool students will be attending this community event to cap off what will have been an exciting week for them.

LADIES GOLF NEWS The 2016 Foursomes Champions are Annette Thomas and Eileen Wilson. The championship was played over 54 holestwo rounds of 27 holes. On the 27th of July, the conditions for round 1 were very heavy and quite chilly, and competition was close with Julie and Joyce only a few strokes behind Annette and Eileen (The soup from Ros was very much appreciated). Round 2 was postponed for a week due to the wet conditions, and the 10th of August was perfect conditions for golf and all players enjoyed the day out. Dare I say the challenge was not only of foursomes (which is hit for hit with your partner), but also 27 holes! Annette and Eileen finished the day in front again, taking out the championship, and the runners up were Julie and Joyce,

followed by Helen Kemper and Rhonda. Our 5th monthly medal and putting was played last week with two grades, and due to programme changes this was also a PAR event and it was wonderful to see President “I Detest Par” playing. The monthly medal winner with a Nett of 70 was Eileen; the Putting medal went to Faye with a nice 29 putts, and on a count back to Helen Kemper. The daily winners from the Par event were Eileen, in A grade with +1, and Margie Sharpe, in B grade with +1 (an inspiration to all). Our 6th monthly medal was played on August 24 and the NSW 4BBB Vs Stableford will be next Wednesday August 31.
