All Saints’ Anglican Church Reverend Canon Jono Williams will start in his new position in Mudgee on December 3. Photo: Joshua Matic.
Respected Reverend Takes New Challenge All Saints’ Anglican Church Canowindra Reverend Canon Jono Williams will depart his post in Canowindra in November, having taken up a new opportunity in Mudgee. The well-respected Reverend Canon, who has spent the best part of the last six years in Canowindra, will conduct his last Sunday service at All Saints on November 6, before making the move to Mudgee in mid-November. His move comes after being offered an opportunity to be the Rector of St John’s Anglican Church in Mudgee, where he will have the opportunity to oversee a team of ministers in a larger environment than that of All Saints in Canowindra. Reverend Canon Jono, from Sydney, has worked in many different roles under the Anglican Church, including different roles in Sydney, Parkes, Narromine, Dubbo, Ba-
thurst and Blayney, but he said Canowindra had been the most welcoming community he had been a part of. “It was a very hard decision for me to make,” he said. “Canowindra really identifies itself with its Aboriginal meaning- ‘home’- and I have enjoyed the friendships I have made not just in the church, but the wider community as well.” Reverend Canon Jono said while it was a hard decision to decide to leave, he felt as though it was a good time to hand his position over to someone else. “I have made many contributions to the community, and I’m now looking forward to new challenges in Mudgee, and being able to manage a team of ministers for the first time,” he said. This year’s Tractor Trek may not have actually yet happened, but it has still made a bumper start, with a whopping $191,574 being raised so far for the event. And with the target number of funds raised being $220,000, the even thas a very good chance of achieving this. The Tractor Trek will take place from September 23 until September 25, starting in Cowra and finishing in Greenthorpe. From its start in Cowra it will trek through Billimari, Canowindra, Woodstock, Holwood, Cowra again, Goologong, Grenfell, and then on to Greenthorpe. Over the three days that the Trek runs for, participants will stop in at local schools and other community venues to engage in activities. Amongst other fundraisers that have happened before the Tractor Trek takes off, the Canowindra Tyre Service held a BBQ breakfast last Saturday morning between 8am and 1pm, raising $550. Billimari’s Roy White, who has been very active getting the Tractor Trek off the ground in Canowindra, said it was great to see the showing of support at the BBQ. “It was great to see so many people still come
out in the rainy weather,” Mr White said. “We had a lot of people who were just driving past, saw what was happening, and then pulled over to have a look and support us. We had lots of locals joining in with us too, so it was a very successful morning.” Mr White had two of his tractors on display at the BBQ, including his main yellow tractor that he will drive during the Tractor Trek, as well as a blue tractor which will be driven by a couple of ladies from Molong. He thanked Canowindra Tyre Service owners and Tractor Trek supporters Alison and Tom Stephens for putting on the BBQ. By Joshua Matic

Walkathon Washed Out But Not Left Out
Rain may have ruined Canowindra’s Moyne Aged Care Centre’s Salvation Army walkathon last Friday, but this did not mean nothing could be done, with residents and staff still enjoying a morning of indoor activities. The Salvation Army Aged Care Plus Centres has held walkathons across NSW, QLD and the ACT from last Thursday, and these will continue until September 16. The initiative seeks to raise over $80,000 for The Freedom Partnership- The Salvation Army’s national initiative to end modern day slavery. Staff and residents at the Moyne Aged Care Centre, part of the Salvation Army Plus Group, were due to walk 10 laps around the outside of their building, but with rain tumbling down, it was decided that indoor activities would be more appropriate instead. While hot dogs and ice cream were still served, despite participants no longer having to walk, they engaged in activities such as games, dancing, trivia, and enjoyed other yummy food for their efforts.
The staff and residents were able to raise $581 through sponsorship from the day, and a further $100 will be coming in from an extra donation. While the walk had to be cancelled, residents and staff at the Centre still had a great time, and their efforts went to a very good cause. The annual Walkathon initiative, now in its eighth year, has raised almost $500,000 to date, rallying Centre residents and their families, carers and the community to raise awareness and funds for The Freedom Partnership. Funds raised by the Walkathon have had a significant impact in transforming the lives of modern day slavery victims in Australia. A young person who needed to leave home due to the risk of a forced marriage, has been supported by the Fund to access accommodation and a weekly living allowance so that she can focus on completing her education, finding employment and rebuilding her life.
Around 90 people attended the Canowindra Historical Society’s “History in the Club” at the Canowindra Services Club last Thursday, to support local author Mim Loomes’ launch of her revised and enlarged book “Nyrang Creek Revisited : A glimpse at the past”. The book takes a look back in the past to what used to be a thriving town at Nyrang Creek, which was settled in 1862 during the gold rush years when the towns of Forbes and Eugowra began to thrive. The launch followed a bus tour earlier in the day throughout the Nyrang Creek area, where Mim pointed out the sites of the earlier settlement that Nyrang Creek once was, such as the cemetery, church, community hall, school, tavern, sawmill, railway station, and the many owners over the years of properties in the area. It was a surprise to many to learn how extensive the Nyrang Creek settlement area was – as far as Nanami Lane to the west, Fish Fossil Drive to the south, Long’s Corner Road to the north, and the current waste and recycling centre in the east. Nyrang Creek developed as a settlement 10 km from Canowindra on the road surveyed from Eugowra in 1862 after Forbes came into being in the gold rush days. The creek there made it a logical stopping place in the horse era, for coaches and teamsters, while the fertile lands, ideal for farming, were attractive to free settlers. Nyrang Creek claims a few firsts in the growing of lucerne, prairie grass, and wine grapes, by its enterprising settlers. “Nyrang Creek Revisited” is available at Virginia Cullane Books, The Age of Fishes Museum, and the Historical Museum. It is an excellent read for anyone looking for a carefully researched book on pioneer families of the area, and wonderful insights into family life, social customs, and farming practices of a bygone era.

Woodstock Show Not Dampened By Rain The soggy conditions didn’t dampen the spirits at the Woodstock Show with everything still going ahead on Sunday. Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, officially opened the 70th year of the Woodstock Memorial Show, in gumboots and all. Cowra Mayor Bill West said “The show is a fantastic tribute to Australian life and a personal tribute to our Governor General”. Local produce, arts and craft, wood chopping, livestock, horse events and the tractor pull were all stand out events and showcased the best of the region. “It’s a celebration of unique qualities of rural life,“ said Mayor Bill West. Local brothers Luke and Kurt Tidswell
cleaned up at this years Woodstock show with Kurt being awarded the perpetual trophy for best show Lamb and Luke received 3rd in the open class tractor and second in best-restored tractor. A highlight of this years show were the five members who received distinguished service medals for their hard work and continued involvement in the show. “Their recognition is long overdue,” said Mayor Bill West. The Woodstock Show was a great day and shows the strong sense of community in rural villages and the very sense of volunteering and pitching in. By Taneil Thornberry

Living andLifestyle Improving The Health Of Your Soil
It’s now spring, and that means it’s the prime time of year to get the garden growing, and local soil expert Nicholas Gerhard is on deck to teach you how to make your soil the best. Mr Gerhard runs the business ‘Soil By Design’, and is hosting one of his biggest workshops this year, ‘The Great Compost Workshop’. In his workshop he will focus on how to use biology to natural nutrients cycling, as well as compost tea brewing. Biology to natural nutrients cycling covers creating good quality compost that people can use to grow produce, while keeping their soil healthy, instead of using fertiliser, which can damage the soil. The workshop will be hands-on, with Mr
Gerhard explaining the process of making, and turning over, good compost, demonstrating it, and then getting participants to create their own. “Participants will build and turn a compost, and get an understanding of how to make a good compost,” he said. “This will benefit people as they will learn they can save money by not needing to use fertiliser, as well as improving their soil, making it nutrient rich, and therefore anything they grow with it will also be nutrient rich.” The workshop will run from 10am-2pm on Saturday September 17 at the Rosnay Organic Farm in Canowindra. The cost will be $70 for a single person, or $50 each for groups of three or more.

Bushwalk In The Nangar National Park With warmer weather approaching it’s a perfect time to get outside. Canowindra is surrounded by some of the best bushwalking tracks in the area and can be the perfect way to get active. Nangar National Park is right in our backyard and has some of the most spectacular views of the region. The walking tracks range in difficulties and can be suitable for all ages. The trek to the top of Nangar is quite challenging, as it is approximately a three-hour return journey, being a 6km walk. Views from the top are breath-taking this time of year with endless paddocks of green and gold, so be sure to bring your binoculars to point out nearby towns. If you’re not up to tackling this walk yet there are smaller ones you can do that allow you to take in the tranquility of the area. Enjoy the wildlife around you as kangaroos and birds take refuge here. Wildflowers are blooming this time of year and the creek is flowing so be sure to bring your camera. Take a stop at Dripping Rock, as it is the perfect place to have a picnic and a rest. Sit and listen to the creek flow as you unwind for the day. Dripping Rock and the walking tracks can be accessed by a 2WD vehicle but to drive to the top you will need a 4WD. Currently the access to drive to the top is closed after the recent rain but is sure to open back up soon. Walks with a view, why not conquer Nangar this weekend. By Taneil Thornberry

Bailey came first in the junior boys long jump and second in high jump, Kyra came first in the 10 years girls 100m sprint and first in the junior girls 200m sprint, and Katie finished second in the senior girls high jump. Congratulations to all three Canowindra Public School students, and the best of luck for the State Athletics Carnival next term.
WOMEN’S BOWLS NEWS
There were three matches that were played on Tuesday, 6th September, with two consistency matches and one rose bowl match making for an entertaining day of bowls.
