Museum Calls For Locals To Support Keeping An Icon In Canowindra
Canowindra’s Age of Fishes Museum has called upon the community to get behind them to keep an iconic car in Canowindra when Charlie McCarron auctions off his extensive collection of cars and memorabilia next month. Charlie’s collection is one of Australia’s most impressive personal collections of vintage cars. The auction will take place over three days from September 29 to October 2, with people expected from all over the world to attend. One of his cars is a 1963 Holden sedan with the Age of Fishes Museum logo emblazoned across its side, which holds significant importance to the Age of Fishes Museum, who would love to see it remain in town. The car was used to gather momentum for the major fish fossil dig in Canowindra in 1993, and after being parked outside the
Council offices for an extended period of time, lead to the creation of the Age of Fishes Museum. In an effort to keep the car in Canowindra, the Museum has set up a ‘Go Fund Me’ account online, and has encouraged locals to donate to it, with all funds raised to be used at Charlie McCarron’s auction to bid for the car. Age of Fishes Museum Manager Warren Keedle said the money would go to a great cause. “Even if we lose our bid, all money raised will be used to create an exhibit on the legacy of the car at the Museum,” he said. “If successful the car will be housed at the Museum in an ongoing exhibit.” If you would like to donate, visit https:// www.gofundme.com/2ntq7tes.

Dear Editor, With an apology for the use of quotations it must be accepted that in Shakespeare’s words “the evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones”, this is now so true for the National Party over its failure to support Local Government Councils in rural, regional and remote NSW, which are currently fighting against their proposed forced amalgamations, the instigation of the NSW, Baird Coalition Government and supported by two relevant National Party Ministers, Troy Grant and Paul Toole. Hypocrisy is never forgotten, thus, the political and very successful intervention, which saved Walcha Shire Council from forced amalgamation, is a “slap in the face” to the other Councils and people unjustly being force-amalgamated and fighting a “David and Goliath” battle in the NSW Land and Environment Court. Repercussions are already being seen as there is a likelihood that the long held National’s seat of Orange will be lost in the
up and coming by-election, caused as a result of Andrew Gee’s moving to the seat of Calare. His move is a sad loss for both the party and people of the Central West, in NSW state politics. Dissatisfaction is growing with the current NSW State Government, and this is exacerbated by the: cancellation of half of the LG Council Elections, which were due on 10 September; forced amalgamation of Councils; the greyhound debacle; rising electricity prices; and the proposed sale of NSW electricity poles and wires. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood

. . . s g n i n Happe Japanese Culture To Bloom At Sakura Matsuri It’s that time of the year again, where the weather starts to warm up, the canola fields are on show, and the cherry blossoms arrive just in time for Cowra’s Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival. The Cowra Japanese Garden has a fantastic festival, now in its 27th year, planned for 2016 that showcases traditional Japanese culture, martial arts, fine food and plenty of entertainment for all of the family. Based on the Japanese custom of ‘hanani’ which literally means ‘viewing the flowers’, cherry blossom festivals date back over thousands of years, with these festivals taking place in early spring when the blossoms come to bloom. Now celebrated all over the world, Cowra’s festival is one of just a handful around the Australia that celebrate the blossoming of trees and the new life spring brings. Cowra has a deep history and a strong relationship with Japan that dates back to the Cowra Breakout during World War II in 1944, and this relationship has inspired many major events in the town, including the Festival of International Understanding and World Peace Day. The significance of this wartime event, which saw hundreds of Japanese prisoners of war turn on the guards and launch a prison break, only for most to be shot dead, also inspired Sakura Matsuri. The main event of the festival, Sakura Matsuri Family Day at the Japanese Garden, will be held from 10am-4pm on Sat-
urday September 24 with activities ranging from the traditional tea ceremony, Bonsai demonstrations, wood block printing, Shibori demonstrations, food stalls and much more. A martial arts stage will hold demonstrations of karate, sumo wrestling, and Aikido, whilst the cultural stage will hold performances from soprano Misako Piper, Taiko drummers, the Sydney Soran Dance Troup, Sydney Sakura Choir, the Torison Youth Choreographic Ensemble and the String Family Quartet. These are just some of the events to take place on the day, and being held in the beauty of the Japanese Gardens, it is truly an event to be enjoyed by all locals and travellers. Tickets for the festival will be $20 for adults, $15 for children, and $60 for a family pass. The Cowra Japanese Garden would also like to thank and acknowledge all of their sponsors including Windowrie Wines, Cowra Hire, Cowra Council, and the Embassy of Japan in Australia. Come along and enjoy the fun amongst the stunning setting of the Cowra Japanese Garden, the centre of Japanese culture in Australia. For further information contact the Cowra Japanese Garden on 6341 2233, info@ cowragarden.com.au or visit www.cowragarden.com.au.

Celebrating John Wythes 11 Years On
Michael Newcombe receives his new television at The Phoenix office.
MNT Transport Scores Top Spot In Footy Tipping Competition
The 2016 Footy Tipping Competition has come to an end after the 26th round of the regular NRL season was played a fortnight ago, with a very happy winner, Michael Newcombe of MNT Transport coming out on top. The competition started very closely with the lead changing numerous times throughout the season however MNT Transport took a very strong lead in Round 21, picking 8 out of 8 and managed to hold this for the remainder of the season. Up until this point it was anyone’s game so this made for a very exciting competition. Michael won a 40 inch LED television which was kindly donated by the sponsors of the competition, Weily’s Betta Home Living in Orange. Many thanks to Drew and the team at Weily’s for their sponsorship each year of this competition. Many thanks also goes to each of the participants in this year’s competition; Belubula Building, Belubula Butchery, Bill Paul Car-
pets, Canowindra Bottle Shop, Canowindra Tyre Service, Cargo Shearing, Dave Rumble, Deli Lama, Matt Dunn, MNT Transport and PM & CM McKenzie Builders. Thank you all for coming on board for a bit of fun and sending through your tips each week. Michael visited the Phoenix office this week to collect his prize and was over the moon with the result and thanked everyone else who participated for making it such a great, exciting competition. “The lead changed so many times, I didn’t know who was going to come out on top so this is fantastic”. “It was a great way to get the whole family involved and I really enjoyed it, very much looking forward to participating again next year”, he said. The Canowindra Phoenix Footy Tipping Competition will definitely be back again in 2017 so keep your eye out for the notice to sign up before the start of the new season. By Roselea Buttigieg
The 11th annual John Wythes Memorial Ride took place last Saturday, with around 70 bikers braving the inclement weather for the event. Mr Wythes was a local singer and songwriter who passed away in 2005 after battling with Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive neurological condition that develops slowly over time and is categorised by clinicians as a “movement disorder”. Johhny Wythes was a keen Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast. Each year his family, friends and other members of the community get together to remember his life and his music by riding motorcycles across the region. Each year they meet at the Cargo Inn, visit his grave to pay their respects, before travelling through the local towns, including nearby Canowindra and Woodstock, before returning to Cargo. This year the Cargo Inn also hosted the group for dinner before they camped out under the stars and got treated to breakfast the following morning. Cargo Inn Publican Donna Donelly said everyone that was apart of the event enjoyed the day and night. “It was a very successful event, and the ride during the day was capped off with a good evening of dancing, and everyone was very well behaved,” she said. “John’s wife Julie was also there, and she gave each biker a CD that John recorded, which was a very nice gesture.” “It was a shame it rained on the day, otherwise we could have had a lot more people. There was 150 that participated last year, but it was still great to see 70 brave the weather for it.” By Joshua Matic

Local construction business Belubula Hemp Homes is currently building its first house from hemp on The Escort Way. Photo: Joshua Matic.
Hemp The Latest In Sustainable Housing
Local builder James Isaacs says building homes out of hemp is one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly ways of doing so, after starting construction on his first hemp house. Mr Isaacs runs the Belubula Hemp Homes construction business, and is currently working on a house made out of hemp on The Escort Way in between Cudal and Eugowra. But while this is the first house he has made from hemp, it certainly won’t be the last, with a list of properties on his list to be made out of the plant-based substance. While it seems bizarre to be building a house with hemp, Mr Isaacs said it had actually been happening on parts of Europe for the last couple of centuries, but the concept had not been seen in Australia until much more recently. He said the biggest advantage of this unusual method was that the houses would last for longer, and give back to the environment.
“Hemp is carbon neutral. It breathes in carbon dioxide similarly to how trees do, plus it’s good for surrounding soils,” he said. “It has good acoustic and thermal insulation as well, and saves the home owner in the long run as they will not need to use their heater or air conditioner as often.” A house made from hemp is still built with a timber frame, and the hemp mixture sits outside of it. The mixture is made from hemp herd and lime binder, and is coated on the outside with a lime render that protects it from the elements. Over time the hemp will petrify and turn to stone, increasing its life expectancy to infinity, whereas most other houses only last for around 50 years before needing maintenance. “Our business is working on streamling this concept, but we’re really pushing how environmentally friendly it is,” Mr Isaacs said.

WHAT’S Hot EUREKA PLANTS SALE
Hello Readers, welcome to this month’s column and what a busy time at the ‘House’. We started the month with a lunch for the Food Basket volunteers, organised by David Harrison. It was a lovely crowd enjoying a sumptuous lamb lunch followed by delicious sweets, tea and coffee and chocolates. Carol Davenport and the Laverty Pathology girls were having High Tea in the Southampton Room on the same day so we were very busy! On the 1st September Michelle Burns organised a great group of ladies for her sister in law to be Anne. Great fun and games with a special guest appearance by Talulah. Great night had by all, lots of laughs! Saturday 3rd September was a Christening lunch for twin boys Mason and Henry with lots of family in attendance. This was a sumptuous luncheon in blues and whites with everyone enjoying the babies special day. In the Southampton Room at the same time was the Cargo Garden Club with President Vicki and girls tucking in to a beautiful Australian menu for lunch followed by sponge cake and homemade cream puffs, a real treat for the beautifully dressed ladies in attendance. On September 8th Elizabeth and Doug from Janelli Nursery celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary with a beautiful blue and silver themed dinner with their family and then all staying the night in the three queen size B&B rooms at Montrose with a beautiful hot breakfast at Deli Lama the next morning. A charming couple and really delightful family, best wishes Doug and Liz. Lots happening in the next couple of weeks with Montrose House hosting a class reunion for all my old school pals from St Raphael’s on 16th September as part of Back2Cowra and then a private family dinner on the 17th for the Ashwood family reunion from Bowral. Girls don’t forget our special Melbourne Cup Luncheon on Tuesday 1st November with a scrumptious lunch, fashion parade, great music and the race followed by high tea. It was a sell out last year so get in and see me at the Deli Lama for bookings. Take Care, Tommy x

Goonigal Poll Dorset Ram Sale A Success
Goonigal Poll Dorset’s in town sale was a success! The sale was held on Tuesday the 30th August and was very well attended. This was the first ever town sale for owner and operators Charles and Robbie Lawrence, as up until now they have always sold livestock on the farm. “Having the sale in town allowed people to feel more comfortable which led to some new clients,” says Charles Lawrence. The top price for the day was $1,900 with the Lawrence Family being very pleased with how the sale went, as they sold what they would have liked. Volume Buyers from the sale were: Webster Pastoral Company, Glen Leigh, McLachlan Group, Gary and Wayne Amos, Lawrence and UEL Balcomb, Mark Grant, the Mitchell family and Milroy Farming. Next year the sale will be on at the same

CANOWINDRA SPORT CANOWINDRA TEAMS STRONG IN HOCKEY GRAND FINALS
Last Saturday saw two sensational hockey grand finals in Cowra despite questionable weather and field conditions. Canowindra fielded teams in both the Intermediate and Opens grand finals. The Intermediate grand final was absolutely tense and incredible to watch. The Canowindra team managed to win the game in a third lot of extra time and by golden goal 2-1 to Bryants. Canowindra took the field again in the Opens grand final. Both teams played to a very high standard, with Imperial being able to capitalise on two opportunities, finishing the game 2-0 over Canowindra. Congratulations to Jamie Austin from Canowindra and Lisa Robertson from Imperial who both earned Player of the Grand Final for their respective games.

Not everybody can lay claim to being a black belt in martial arts, however Canowindra local Alex Flannery achieved just that recently. Alex started Karate several years ago. He started under the tuition of instructor Kevin Guihot, who used to run night classes from a shed in Canowindra, but unfortunately his classes closed. He returned to Karate in 2012 in Cowra, and has been an active member of the Kumiai-Ryu martial arts club for over four years. During this time he has travelled to Cowra at least twice a week for classes and other NSW venues several times a year for training and grading events. He was awarded his Black Belt following an extensive two and a half day assessment of skill, strength and stamina at Port Macquarie in late August. A very proud Alex Flannery is pictured above after he successfully graded to 1st Degree Black Belt in Karate. Well done Alex, and keep up the great work!
