Canowindra Set For Huge Long Weekend

The town of Canowindra is all set for a huge influx of tourists and a massive range of events this weekend, as the town’s biggest ever October long weekend takes place. What originally started as the annual Airing of the Quilts on the October long weekend, has grown to also include Charlie McCarron’s auction, tours of Canowindra, markets, exhibitions, barbeques, and live music. The auction of Charlie McCarron’s vin-

tage car collection is expected to attract thousands of people alone, but with all of the other events taking place across the weekend, even more people are expected to travel to Canowindra. Fiona Ferguson, a member of local community organisation ‘Canowindra@Home’ who has played a major role in organising Canowindra’s long weekend, said it was an event the entire Canowindra community could look forward to.

“It’s been a very well supported event. We received a $3,000 grant from Cabonne Council for our marketing and promoting, but we’ve also had other donations from the community to make things happen,” she said. “Charlie McCarron’s auction at Canowindra Motors will obviously be the highlight of the weekend, but in the past the Airing of the Quilts has attracted one thousand people, so that could be a popular event as well.” “The quilt themed window displays, which started on Wednesday, will be a great way to get visitors to see Canowindra as well. The idea behind that is to encourage people to walk around the town to view the quilts, almost like a trail and to see all of the local attractions of Canowindra.” Besides Charlie McCarron’s auction and the Airing of the Quilts, there will also be the “Roasted” exhibition at Delice, the “Past and Present” exhibition at the Old Vic Inn, various events at the Canowindra Services Club, a busking competition at Deli Lama, the Moorbel Markets, various community BBQ fundraisers, the Canowindra CWA open day, and “Blind Freddy’s” half day tours of Canowindra. Fiona said it was a great opportunity to boost the economy of Canowindra.

Canowindra Show Shines

Winners and grinners would be how to describe the 2016 Show, with many events still going ahead despite the weather. One of the main spectaculars of the Show, being the Canowindra Showgirl, was awarded to Meg Austen this year. Meg was delighted with the win saying, “I’m really happy that my time spent here is being recognised and that hard work really does pay off.” The 2016 Junior Showgirl was awarded to McKenzie Lazarou, who showed exceptional skills throughout the interviewing process, in what was a close competition. Both candidates showed a wealth of confidence and knowledge of Canowindra, and will be great representatives for the town. Other competitions on the day were the Jillaroo and Jackaroo, being highly contended this year with many entrants. The Under 6’s Jillaroo was Caprice Pickett and Jackaroo was Rhys Wythes. The 6-9

years Jillaroo was Maddy Caroll and the Jackaroo was Marcus White. The 10-12 years Jillaroo was Sienna Flynn and Jackaroo was Deagan Hogan. With events continuing throughout the day Team Penning was a standout event. This year’s winners were James Watson, Amy Wythes and Lucy Mcglynn. Phil Balcombe cleaned up in the sheep section as usual, taking out Champion Poll Dorset Ram, Supreme Ram and Supreme Exhibit. Other major winners in this section were Kinellar, who won Supreme Ram Lamb, and Pine Creek, who won Senior Supreme Ewe. Andrew Gee MP, Member for Clare attended the show and sashed the Miss Showgirls as well as addressing this year’s show. By Taneil Thornberry

On your trip here you would have noticed that Canowindra has really sprung into spring with the Canola crops in full bloom and the amount of fresh green feed around, this is due to the amazing amount of rain received over the last 3 months. cal arts throughout the community and beyond – establishing a Canowindra permanent Arts Centre in which all residents of the town and its surrounding villages will be able to develop and exhibit their creative skills. “The centre would also promote the whole range of artistic pursuits including photography, art printing, sculpture, ceramicists, art weaving, also poets and writers, providing them with a venue and the resources they’d need to advance their talents. “We also plan regular workshops by established artists which would help beginners – adults, and especially schoolkids – explore and develop their creativity.” The “Artful 8” show will in fact be the centrepiece of a virtual Canowindra arts festival alongside the Baroquefest 2016 concerts, with featured artists also exhibiting their work at their own personal galleries. Heather Vallance, for instance, has a major display of her paintings on permanent display at Finns cafe and store on Gaskill Street. David Isbester’s Gaskill Street studio and gallery will also be open, as will artist-designer Melissa Gersbach’s gallery and store a few doors away. Melissa Barber will also be staging an exhibition at her former gallery next door to Trading Post on Ferguson Street. Says Arthur Falconer: “Locals and visitors will see the true scope and astonishingly high quality of art in Canowindra and the surrounding region. “Hopefully ‘Artful 8’ will help establish the base for a permanent showcase and training ground for local artistic expression for years to come.”

Canowindra is about to make its mark as a regional cultural hub this October with a major art exhibition, staged alongside the second Baroquefest concerts and showcasing the highly rated creative skills, dedication, sophistication and depth of some of our finest local and regional painters. Labelled “The Artful 8,” the exhibition will feature the vibrantly diverse genres of our leading artists, including Heather Vallance, David Isbester, Derek Maitland, Virginia Mooney and Sue Hodge, along with Ann Morton of Cowra, Isabella Mathieu from Cargo and Carcoar’s Jan Platt. You’ll find their works staged in the Old IGA Store, Gaskill Street from October 9 to 22, and open daily throughout the fortnight. The artists themselves will be on hand at times during the exhibition to chat with visitors about their work and art in general. Some will have their own studios open to visitors during the event to launch an official Canowindra Arts Trail. While the “Artful 8” is a two-week event its ceremonial opening , to be held at 5.30pm on Friday October 17, will also mark the official launch of this year’s Canowindra Baroquefest, with the first concert featuring Camerata Antiqua at 7.30pm in All Saints Church. The art exhibition is aimed not just at showing off its best artists and their works but also developing the Canowindra region’s artistic talents in an ambitious program to establish it as a cultural centre and major player in Central Western arts tourism. As Arthur Falconer, Canowindra community stalwart and head of the newly formed Canowindra Arts group organising “Artful 8” explains: “We’re planning to make this the first step in a campaign to broaden lo-

Tractors Trek Through Flooded Central West Trekking 300km in three days is a mean feat in a tractor, but a group of dedicated men and women have done just that, and all for a good cause. The Tractor Trek group this year raised over $220,000 for Camp Quality in their Tractor Trek that took place last Friday to Sunday, September 23 to 25. On the first day of the trek, all 24 tractors pulled into Canowindra Public School to show off the tractors to the kids and talk about the event. “The trek has been very steady; a couple of detours due to flooding but all good. We were down a few thousand dollars this year as things have been pretty tough in the bush,” Tractor Trekker Pat Kilby said. Tractors ranged from old to new, and some were decorated with splashes of colour. John Sharp was one of the masterminds behind this great event and said it all started with a trip to New Zealand, after he met a man that was doing a tractor trek to raise money for his two grand-daughters, who were not well at the time. “The trek was born in New Zealand, I spent three months going nowhere with it until I met Graeme Elslick who helped things fall into place.” John Sharp said. The trek has now been running for five years and has raised over a whopping $1.3 million for Camp Quality. The trek attracts people from all over with some coming from as far as Sydney to get involved. Robert Westcott, Kevin Porter, Errol McCain, John Sharp, Geoff Porter and Adam Sharp have each been involved since the event started. By Taneil Thornberry

The biggest long weekend Canowindra has ever seen is almost here, and local businesses have prepared themselves to provide tourists with the services they’ll need and to leave them with great memories and a desire to return to Canowindra for many years to come. As well as the auction there are markets and events scheduled across the weekend, with local businesses in town all opening their doors. Many of them will be extending their opening hours to accommodate the large number of visitors and provide plenty of options for all our visitors during their time in Canowindra. Whilst most businesses in Canowindra will be pumping this weekend, one will also be celebrating a very special occasion. Women’s clothing and accessories store Saffi, on Gaskill Street, will be celebrating its sixth birthday this weekend and it is fabulous that it coincides with this special long weekend. The store specialises in women’s clothing and accessories, and has plenty of new spring stock in store from a wide range of well known brands. Saffi was established back in 2010 by owner and operator Liz Mitchell after wellknown local Jeanette Newcombe closed down her women’s clothing store, which had been open for 17 years. Liz took inspiration from the great work that Jeanette had done over a long period of time, and with the dream of setting up her own busi-

ness, established Saffi. Initially the store was located next door to the Trading Post, but moved to its current location of 68 Gaskill Street, where Jeanette’s former store, Jeanette’s Inspiration, was located, two and a half years ago. Liz said she hoped to enjoy many more great years for her business and thanked the people of Canowindra for keeping her trading. “I think the most important thing to do would be to thank the people of Canowindra for supporting a local business,” she said. “I have always focused on personalised customer service, and that’s really important when you’re running a local business. We also try to source Australian made products for our clothes and accessories wherever possible.” In 2012 Saffi won a Daroo Business Award for the Best New Business under two years old in Cabonne Shire and has been nominated in different categories in the years following. Liz paid tribute to Jeanette, who worked at Saffi for the first five years it was open. “Jeanette did a great job over a long period of time, and she helped me get my store to where it is today,” she said. Located just next door to Saffi in Gaskill Street is Bubba and Bear Kids Boutique, specialising in clothing and accessories for babies and infants through to seven year olds.

October Long Weekend in

Canowindra Bubba and Bear opened its bricks and mortar store in Canowindra’s main street in July 2016, after running the online store for 2 years, stocking a huge range of items including clothing, toys, games, art and craft items, hats, jewellery, bags, lunch boxes, pram accessories and blankets, basi-cally everything you could need for your new bub! Bubba and Bear stocks high quality, funky and stylish clothing, and aims to continue to source the latest trends and fashions in designer baby and childrens clothing and accessories. The store also prides itself on high quality customer service, and if there’s something you regret not purchasing over the weekend be sure to check out their website, www.bubbaandbear.com. au, where you can order online and have it shipped to your door. All that shopping would have worked up a serious appetite so venture down the street to the Deli Lama for one of Tommy’s delicious cakes or muffins and a coffee. The Deli will be open all weekend and will be hosting a busking competition for interested musicians on Saturday. The busking will provide plenty of entertainment at Deli Lama, and will run on Saturday from 9am. Prizes will be awarded to winning musicians. Deli Lama has asked that all interested buskers enter the competition before Friday morning by seeing Tommy Jeffs at the café or by phoning 6344 1006. If you’d prefer something a little stronger to drink, visit the Canowindra Bottle Shop on Blatchford Street where they are offering local wine tasting all weekend and sample some of the local wines from around the area. They stock a great range of spirits,

wines and beers to suit every taste. There will be plenty of entertainment at the Canowindra Services Club over the weekend with the kitchen open extended hours and a huge range of events being held. Friday Night will kick off with Market Night and free jukebox from 6pm, followed on Saturday by the AFL Grand Final live on the big screen with kick off at 2.30pm. There will also be a DJ from 8pm till late. Sunday is the NRL Grand Final live on the big screen as well as free jukebox again. While you’re visiting the Services Club be sure to check out the painting on the front window by year 10 students, Julia Stanley and Mitch Clark from Canowindra High School. “It was a great way to jazz up the windows in light of Charlie’s auction this weekend,” said Services Club Administration Manager Julie Fliedner. Another new business recently opened in the main street is Pizza & Souvlaki Co, offering a great range of delicious, fresh pizza’s and souvlaki. They will be open from 10am-10pm Friday through to Sunday to cure your pizza cravings throughout the whole weekend. For all the coffee addicts be sure to head to Delice Coffee on Tilga Street and visit the ‘Roasted’ exhibition and enjoy the amazing food and coffee they have to offer. The coffee is roasted fresh to perfection in store and is full of flavour and all food and cakes are made using the freshest ingredients. They also offer some great gluten free options. Whatever your tastes, you’re sure not to be short of things to do and see this weekend in our lovely village of Canowindra. We hope you enjoy your stay and look forward to seeing you back again soon.

Graham: I was so impressed by the previous service and assistance given by Kate that I asked her to sell my Mother’s property. One of the attributes to this success was Kate’s ability to list the property at a realistic value, and being able to negotiate with the buyers, to achieve the price that was discussed on her original inspection. Kate’s assistance when staging properties for inspection was invaluable. Bruce and Michelle: I am writing to you thank you for the successful sale of our home when it comes to selling I have no doubt that Ray

How long have you lived in or around Canowindra? I’ve lived in Canowindra, back and forth with Wollongong, for the last 16 years, but have been in Canowindra full time for the past 12 months. What do you like the most about living in Canowindra? I like the relaxed lifestyle. There’s no rush, and it’s stress free. I live on 33 acres of land and can just watch the world go by with my alpacas, sheep, chooks and greyhounds. What do you do for work? I’m semi-retired, however I deliver the Hilltops Phoenix newspapers to Boorowa, Harden and Young on Thursdays, and I also do mowing and dog boarding on the side. What do you do in your spare time? I watch the kids play soccer in Cowra and go to some South Sydney Rabbitohs games in Canberra and Sydney. How do you like your coffee? I like my coffee white with two sugars. Where would your dream holiday be to? My dream holiday would be to go to Wombat Heights in South West NSW to have a picnic and enjoy the countryside.
