Artful 8 Exhibition Opening
With over 120 people in attendance, Marian Arnold the Festival Patron for the Canowindra Baroque Festival, officially opened the Artful 8 exhibition and the Baroque festival at the old hardware store in Gaskill Street, on Friday night. It was simply amazing to see what the hard working committee have done in such a short space of time to enable this opening to go ahead. It is a generous space and thanks to the curator Isabelle Mathieu, the paintings by the following artists were displayed magnificently: Sue Hodge, David Isbester, Virginia Mooney, Isabelle Mathieu, Jan Platt, Derek Maitland and Ann Morton. Over 300 people have come through the gallery during the past two weeks. Arthur Falconer, Chairman of the Canowindra Arts said, “We started this with the aim
of providing a public place for local artists to display their works, a learning environment for children to learn about and appreciate art, and a theraputic opportunity for elderly and disabled people. The way we hope to fund this is to provide fee paying workshops in all the arts, including creative writing, painting, sculpture, pottery, drawings, textiles and ongoing exhibitions from artists around the regions. The next step will be to create a camera club to introduce photography into Canowindra Arts. We are hoping that the next exhibition will be held in the new year. This was a trial to see if we could garner public support and it has been wonderful to see it so well supported. Everyone is welcome.”

Dear Sir,
This was forwarded rather late for a previous edition of Phoenix.
The Orange By-Election looks likely to receive a torrid political pre voting day period. There are four issues which no doubt will feature in this by-election campaign. 1. A protest by the Greyhound fraternity.
2. The Cabonne Council’s anti-amalgamation campaign, an ongoing dispute.
spectively.
Overall electricity charges from 01 July to 14 July (now current), have increased for Peak Use and Supply Charges by 21.13% and 17.86% respectively. It is reasonable to assume that possibly many people who live in Rural, Regional and Remote areas will be affected by any one or all of these 4 matters combined if ignored.
Yours sincerely,
3. The likely sale of the NSW State electricity poles and wires.

4. A recent issue that has since crept in “under the radar” is to do with electricity charge increases, these have risen in two steps: From 01 July to 09 July, Peak Use and Supply Charges have increased by 11.93% and 7.58%, respectively. From 09 July to 14 July, Peak Use and Supply Charges have increased by 10.00% and 9.56% , re-

who attended the event, which is a great turn out raising approximately $2000 for the St Edwards P&F Association. The Spring Fling was packed full of things to do with many kids enjoying getting fake tattoos and their hair sprayed in all different colours. November Shorn were the entertainment for the afternoon and had families filling the dance floor. The students had a great time showing off their new dancing skills with parents and grandparents even getting involved too. Some of the many dances included Heel and Toe as well as Strip the Willow being among the favourites. “Everyone at the St Edwards Spring Fling had a boot scooting, bull bucking and splashing time,” Jackie Watson P&F President said. Next year will see more exciting events like this happening with the fundraising committee hard at work in planning for some more fundraising fun.

What a great evening the St Ewdards Primary School put on for the community on Friday night. The Spring Fling and Family Bush Dance saw families come together to have a dance, a bit of fun and to raise some money. Highlights of the evening would definitely have to be watching Principal Ken McNamara and Parish Priest Father Laurie Beath both getting dunked by students in the dunking machine. The mechanical bull was also a hit with everyone having a go, even some of the parents. A spit roast lamb was enjoyed for dinner with the lamb kindly being donated by families of St Edwards School. The event was put together by the St Edwards fundraising committee to help raise money for new play ground equipment, to show off the newly renovated classrooms and to create a community spirit. The new playground equipment is ordered and will be installed in the Christmas holidays. There were approximately 350 people

Participants at Light the Night last year.
Light The Night
Light the Night is happening again this year and will be held on Saturday November 5th at the Sports Trust Oval, with gates opening at 3pm. The evening will kick off with the Rugby Union verse the Rugby League match. The game will be played a bit different with one half being played as Rugby Union then the other half as Rugby League. The rivalry has already started so it will be a game not to be missed. Following the match there will be an afternoon full of market stalls with over 50 on display. There will be entertainment for the kids with dancers, singers and a special appearance from the much loved Minion Man and Peppa Pig. This will then lead up to the main spectacular of the evening being the beautiful lantern walk, which will take place on dusk with a magical hot air balloon glowing while
everybody walks around the oval. There will be plenty of merchandise available to be purchased on the night as well as lots of raffles. Some of the raffle items include vouchers from local businesses in Canowindra and a beautiful 2 night stay at Greentrees Retreat on the outskirts of Orange valued at $550. Tickets cost $2 each or 3 for $5 and will be drawn on the night. Lanterns will be available for purchase on the day and all lanterns purchased in previous years are also encouraged to be brought along. Due to the kind donations from Kinsela Farm Supplies and Kens Service Centre the committee were able to order their own design of Light the Night shirts which will be available to purchase on the day, adults $20 and kids $15. Anyone who would like to come along to the event the entry price is a gold coin donation.
Hello readers, welcome to the column. Very, very busy time in Canowindra the last couple of weeks and especially busy at Montrose House with lost of visitors staying and lots of dinner parties. At the other end of the house in the South Hampton room Vicki Grant and family where enjoying a scrumptious dinner after winning this in the CWA raffle. The following Friday the Myer Baileau family from Melbourne celebrated their Dad’s 80th birthday, and Saturday the delightful Kilby and Chivers families brought a bus of friends and family for a celebration dinner themed in black and white. This week is my birthday with a small, intimate family dinner and a huge celebration party early in November. Lots coming up, Senator Fiona Nash with Scott Barret in town this week, Captain of the Australian Netball team with an award to Mandy Townsend, and a high tea for Orange Tourism operators. Iconic Fish Fossil Car Remains In Canowindra On Sunday the 2nd of October the Iconic Canowindra grossi car went under the hammer at Charlie’s auction. The 1963 Holden Sedan with the Age of Fishes Museum logo emblazoned across the side sold for $12,000 to the proud owners Denese Smith and Ken Saward of Canowindra. The car was originally used to gather momentum for the major fish fossil dig in Canowindra in 1993, and after being parked outside the Council offices for an extended period of time, lead to the creation of the Age of Fishes Museum. Through the dedication of many locals and Charlie’s idea to have this car to promote the fossils in Canowindra lead to what is now the only dedicated fish fossil museum in the southern hemisphere. This car has become a part of history not only to the Age of Fishes Museum but
the town of Canowindra too, as it holds so much importance in getting Canowindra’s history recognised. Denese one of the proud owners of the Fish Fossil car has been a long-time volunteer for the Age of Fishes Museum and could not live with the possibility of losing such an important part of the local and cultural history. Denese and Ken plan to make the car available to the Museum for promotion and exhibition. “We are very happy that this important cultural heritage item has remained in Canowindra and we are proud of the community support received. We are especially grateful to Denese and Ken for their incredible community spirit. We literally couldn’t have done it without them,” said Warren Keedle, manager of the Age of Fishes Museum. A permanent exhibition is being created
at the Age of Fishes Museum to retell the history and the importance of this iconic vehicle in the development and town culture of the museum. The Age of Fishes Museum look forward to helping to preserve the town’s history.

My House My Home Five Top Tips For Summer Summer can be wonderful time but can also be a dreaded season as many people struggle to keep cool. Here are five tips and tricks to keep you cool this summer season. 1. Keep blinds closed: 30% of unwanted heat comes from your windows. 2. Swap your sheets: Replace your winter sheets for cotton ones as they breathe easier and stay cool.
3. Be smart about your doors: Close off rooms that aren’t in use then at nighttime open doors or windows to let the cooler air flow through the house. 4. Turn off your lights: Lights give off heat so be sure to take advantage of the natural light. 5. Use your BBQ: Ovens put off a lot of heat so get outside and start grilling to keep inside your house cool.

Employers Beware In early October our High Court expanded the scope in which an employer can be held vicariously liable for the criminal acts of its employees. What is vicarious liability and what does this mean for employers? Simply speaking vicarious liability is ‘where one person, himself blameless, is held liable for another person’s conduct’. Employers can be vicariously liable for many actions of their employees including sexual harassment, discrimination and negligence. For many years it was not clear if an employer was also responsible for the criminal acts of its workers as it was deemed that many criminal acts of an employee had no relationship to their employment. However in the recent case Prince Alfred College Inc v ADC a case involving institutional abuse at a school the High Court held that if an employee is in a position of trust, authority, power, control and intimacy in relationship to a person in the course of their work and that employee commits a crime against that person the employer may also be held vicariously liable for the injury and damage caused. The ruling does not make an employer responsible for every and any criminal act an employee may perform however it will now require employers to be very mindful of the conduct of their employees by preventing if possible an employee committing a crime whilst at work. Vicarious liability is a broad area of law, to obtain legal advice in relation to your employees or in relation to any employment related query contact Geoffrey Yeo at Peacockes Solicitors. Aqua Fitness
For everyone wanting to have fun and improve their fitness, spring is here and summer is just around the corner, which means the start of aqua fitness classes. Exercises in the water are easier to do and less stressful on the joints. The hour session involves walking in the water, specific exercises for each joint, aerobic exercises and cool down stretches. You do not need to be able to swim to take part in the classes. “The aqua fitness classes over the past number of years have been a lot of fun, and participants felt their fitness and energy levels improved,” Physiotherapy Aide Angela Ellis said. The aqua fitness classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 9am to 10am from 7th November. The classes are for adult men and women, and all newcomers are welcome to attend. The cost is $2.50 for pool entry unless you have a season ticket. You can register by calling into the Physiotherapy Department prior to the 7th of November. Some participants may need medical clearance before they can participate in the classes, so register early to ensure you don’t miss out on any sessions. For further information about aqua fitness classes in Canowindra, please contact Angela Ellis or Sue Johnson at the Canowindra Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Physiotherapy Department on (02) 6340 3017.

Two Milestones For Canowindra
The weekend of 14th – 16th October saw two more milestones achieved for Canowindra. Designed to give Canowindra a mark on the map of NSW, The Artful Eight and Canowindra Baroquefest could only have impressed visitors to the town with their high standard of presentation and content. The joint official opening of the Artful Eight Exhibition and Canowindra Baroquefest was well attended. The old hardware store, brought back to life for the exhibition was filled with an ambiance that then flowed through to the quite amazing, Friday night Baroquefest concert held in All Saints, a truly beautiful church that could easily fit into the countryside of Europe with its architectural style and beautiful stained glass windows. Camerata Antica is a quite unique group of three outstanding musicians that has performed widely overseas. Specialising in early English music, Matthew Manchester played various rare and

fascinating early instruments, accompanying the exquisitely clear and pure soprano voice of Anna Sandstrom. The apparent simplicity and the beauty of this 16th century music, including two pieces by Henry VIII couldn’t help but impress and create pure pleasure for the audience. Pleasure and enjoyment proved to be the theme of the whole weekend flowing through three more outstanding concerts and several informal events with the young buskers in the main street on Saturday morning to be congratulated on their performance. There is so much more to be said in favour of these two events continuing for the enjoyment of local people, the educational opportunity for schools, and the sharing of our historic town and community spirit with visitors who will, by word of mouth, increase awareness and help promote Canowindra.
IN Memorium Pat Burnheim sadly passed away last Saturday. Pat has had a considerable impact on the community especially in her younger years as English and History Head Teacher at Canowindra High School and in a number of roles within the Canowindra Historical Society. She will be known as someone who gave much to this community, who will be remembered as Mrs. B to some.
