RED HOT CAR LOAN App Don’t ly Now! miss o ut! A beautiful performance of arias by Handel, Bach, Vivaldi as well as Strauss Opera to delight the audience.

Sunday At Wallington’s

In a district blessed with the climate and soils suited to wine growing there is nothing that attracts people more than a luncheon that includes the product of the vineyard. Just so at Wallington’s on Sunday 16th when 80 people, some local but many from further afield, gathered under the vine covered pergola to enjoy a little joie de vie. The last event of the Canowindra Baroquefest included a luncheon menu superbly crafted by caterer Jo Robson featuring her specialty of chicken and pork terrine with dill and mint, followed by two delicious desserts, a lemon buttermilk pannacotta with blueberries and a tiramisu. There was a full choice of Wallington Wines for selection. This is a scene that never fails to attract comments about the view across the paddocks and the vines to the blue hills beyond. Then to follow all that with a concert in the winery itself, built with straw bales with its consequently excellent acoustics is

nothing short of perfection. The concert on this occasion was entirely vocal and was presented by a group of six young singers, some of whom are already enjoying singing with professional groups, and some who are waiting in the wings for such an opportunity. Voci Stupende is a not for profit organisation managed by Jane and Hugh Frazer who support and actively look for opportunities for the singers to perform in regional Australia. Their daughter Emma sings with the renowned “Song Company”, a group that has asked Richard Statham, president of Canowindra Fine Music if they might be able to perform at Baroquefest 2017. So great things are set to follow in years to come providing the organising committee is able to attract financial support to meet its budget each year. By Taneil Thornberry

Dear Editor, Reading of the article in the Central Western Daily written (according to the masthead on 25 Oct 16) by Bev Smiles of (the) Inland Rivers Network who states, “Indepth studies conducted in the 1960s ruled out these dam sites” seems to be unable to accept those findings when she states, “The Belubula River Alliance looks forward to a rigorous costs benefits analysis in the stage 2 feasibility report”, which seems to be in juxtaposition to her bewailing that the group, ‘The Nationals, Lachlan Valley Water and Belubula Landholders Alliance’, have not explained their interests in the matter. I would have thought the ordered evidence of past investigations had already explained ad-nauseua the cost benefits for many over the constricted interests of some smaller groups. From a social and economic point of view the desire to build the dam is fairly established. From a geotechnical point of view, where porous limestone might leak out the

water being held, a case can be made to further explore the dangers inherent because of better understanding now of earth science than was the case previous. As for the underground cavities that might house some examples of pristine wonderment, I have not heard of a movement to open up an entrance so that the world might enjoy the sights revealed (a la Jenolan Caves). It would be unfortunate for these to be drowned in water, but a Pyrrhic example of what wrought them to be their demise. So be it. Dam the river. Regards, Bob Sherwood

Lawrence’s IGA has played an integral part in the Canowindra community now for many years. IGA has supported and continues to support many of the local clubs, associations, and community groups in the town as well as generously contributing through Community Chest to many groups in need. Employing a range of people from all ages, it is seen as a good training ground for many who start in these roles whilst still at school. With their opening hours across all days of the week, IGA provides a vital service to the village of Canowindra, and deserves being a finalist in three categories of best ongoing business, excellence in service operations, and contribution to Cabonne.

Adloyalty would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all nominees and finalists for the 2016 Daroo Awards. As a small business ourselves we love the opportunity to celebrate business success as well as to reflect on the past year - and 2016 has been a big year for Adloyalty! Securing the opportunity to deliver the Discover the Riches campaign for Cabonne Council that showcases the assets and attractions of our local villages was something our entire team was exceptionally proud of. Since then we have gone onto design the new logo for the Orange Regional Museum and have just delivered a large Social Media training program on behalf of Parkes Shire Council. The Adloyalty Creative team continues to grow with our second design office opening in Wagga Wagga in early October and we are now finalising the launch of our new business arm, Adloyalty Lead Generation which will see the Adloyalty team blossom into a team of 14 highly specialised experts.

Windowrie Wins

Recently released 2015 Windowrie ‘Family Reserve’ Pinot Noir ($30) was awarded the Trophy for the Best Pinot Noir of the Show at the 2016 Orange Wine Show. “This is the inaugural release of this wine and to have been presented a trophy along with two gold medals is more than we could have hoped for,” commented Windowrie’s Jason O’Dea. The first gold medal was awarded at the prestigious 2016 Sydney Royal Wine Show in July and was one of only five gold medals in the class. “Top awards were fresh, bright and complex,” commented the judging panel. Last week’s Orange Wine Show Pinot Noir was judged by Chairman Gary Baldwin, Alison Eisermann MW, Nick O’Leary and Associate Luisa Machielse. The Pinot Noir class comprised 32 wines, reflecting the increasing importance of the variety in Orange; “Top awards (in the pinot noir class) showed good primary fresh fruit,” said the judges. “Our Pinot Noir is made from a parcel of grapes grown on the north eastern slopes of Mount Canobolas situated at an elevation of 950 metres. The vineyard is starting to mature, having been planted in 1999 with Pinot Noir clones 114, 115 and MV6.” “We are aiming to make a balanced and harmonious Pinot Noir that is representative of the vineyard site,” explained Windowrie Winemaker, Anthony D’Onise. “We are looking to draw out flavours of raspberry through to dark cherry alongside herbs,

spice and a touch of char. The comments from the judges from Sydney and Orange are really pleasing, and show we are certainly on the right track.” The new Pinot Noir joins Windowrie ‘Family Reserve’ Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Gris. Another award to add to Windowrie’s collection: • Trophy: Best Pinot Noir of the Show, Orange Wine Show 2016 • Top Gold Medal, Class 9, Orange Wine Show 2016 • Gold Medal, Class 21, Sydney Royal Wine Show 2016 Windowrie is one of Cowra region’s founding winemakers, established by the O’Dea family in 1988, the business experienced considerable success, allowing them to build a winery in 1999, which was certified organic in 2008. The Windowrie range now comprises the ‘Family Reserve’ and ‘The Mill’ range. Jason O’Dea also makes the ‘Pig In The House’ organic brand, which has been awarded the NASSA Organic Wine of the Year Trophy.

This week saw just over 34,000 bales offered nationally. The market reacted with further price rises, leaving the NRI 13 cents dearer for the week at 1372 c/kg. Unlike in recent sales where it has been the finer microns enjoying most of the price rises, this week saw gains across the entire merino micron spectrum, with 16.5 to 23.0 microns enjoying rises of between 15 and 30 cents, and again premiums were evident for the lower CVH lots. Merino skirtings were generally 20 to 30 cents dearer for the week, with the most buyer interest centred on the FNF (<2%) stylish lots. Merino cardings received excellent buyer support on a limited offering, with rises of between 15 and 25 cents recorded for the week. A large stylish selection of washing lambs offered in Fremantle attracted very strong competition and as a result were quoted up to 50 dearer compared to the previous sale. The crossbreds market remained generally unchanged on a limited offering. Next week’s national offering is significantly larger with nearly 45,000 bales on offer.

“Innisvale”, a local property located on the Nangar Road was sold under auction on Thursday 20th at the Canowindra Services Club. The property consisting of 749 acres, represented an opportunity to buy into the local market with a property which is highly suited to a range of grazing and cropping enterprises in a very productive region of the Central West of NSW. Bidding started at $800,000 and the final bid was $1,710,000, which far exceeded the agent’s expectations. The new owners are husband and wife Sandy Moss and Sam Lawson who currently reside at Mossvale, and Adam Boyd was the vendor.

RURAL ROUNDUP Be On The Lookout For Stock Health Issues With the recent rains there are a number of health issues with stock to be on the lookout for. With clover present in many paddocks, some method of bloat control may need to be considered. Also, the same conditions will cause Pulpy Kidney, which is often confused with bloat. You can vaccinate all cattle with 5 in 1 vaccine, every 2-3 months in these risk periods, as well as putting out bloat blocks. Fly control will be important as well, and you should remember to secure your product early as they will come under supply pressure.

Now is also the time to start your fallow commencement for 2017 if you want to have any chance at all in getting on top of annual grasses. The advantage of spraying now is in controlling many annual grasses and broadleaf weeds prior to them setting seed. Don’t skimp on rates, if in doubt lift the rate. In relation to the cattle and sheep sales out of the Forbes Livestock Centre, Paul Breen, KMWL Forbes said, “With all of the wet weather we have been expecting high yardings, however apart from one week where we had in excess of 40,000 sheep,

the yardings have been unexpectedly low. This week saw 20,000 lambs and 6,000 mutton, with prices around $10 up to $165 and old lambs whilst back to $178, were still up $8.00 on last week.” Paul said, “Cattle have been easing with 550 kg steers selling for around $3.17kg and $3.25 for prime cattle, which is around a $0.70 drop. The numbers for cattle are still fluctuating, and on Friday 11th November we are holding a store cattle sale at Carcoar, based on last month’s yarding of 3500, we should have around a similar yarding.”

Checklist For Your Mowers For Summer

Spring has sprung and the grass has risen, now is the time to ensure that your mowers are ready for action.

For 4 stroke mowers: • check the oil and change if black; • top up if the oil is low; • check the air filter and if dirty change or clean as per the instruction manual. • For the cutting blades, seek assistance by asking them to hold the handle on the ground to tip the mower with the spark plugs in the air and then check the cutting blades, and if worn or broken replace them.

For 2 stroke mowers: • check the blades again • fill with the correct fuel • check the air filter, and if broken, turn the fuel tap on and wait 2 minutes to see if there is a fuel leak, prime, set the throttle and start. Then stop the motor and turn the fuel off. If there is a fuel leak or the mower fails to start after 6 pulls of the starting rope, it is important to get the machine serviced. In between using your mower make sure to store it under cover to keep it in good condition.

YOUR Wealth Matters Biggest Money Mistakes

Tommy Jeffs, Senator Fiona Nash and Nationals Candidate Scott Barrett

Locals Meet Scott Barrett And Senator Fiona Nash

Around 40 people attended a drinks night at Montrose House on Thursday 20th to meet with local candidate Scott Barrett and Senator Fiona Nash, Deputy Leader of the Nationals, Minister for Regional Development, Minister for Local Government and Territories and Minister for Regional Communications. Scott thanked everybody in attendance for their support, and said how honoured he was to be the local candidate for Orange in the upcoming by election. Whilst there have been a number of challenges during the lead up time, including the greyhounds and the amalgamation issue, Scott said “At the end of the day it is all about the local communities that I would be representing, the local issues, including roads, hospitals and education and I will be pushing for greater representation for these local communities in Parliament if I am successful in being elected.” Both Senator Nash and Scott fielded questions from those in attendance including the Cranky Rock Dam, which Sena-

tor Nash said was very high on Barnaby Joyce’s list, some local issues with connectivity with Telstra and the amalgamation issue of Cabonne, Orange and Blayney Councils. Senator Nash said “I particularly want to change how we look at regional communities. In particular we are looking at how we can invest in regional Australia, as currently regional areas are making a huge contribution to the economy, and not just having a policy of propping them up. This is so our children, and our grandchildren either stay in the local areas or come back once they have finished their university degrees. I have a very close working relationship with Barnaby Joyce, the leader of the Nationals, which augers well for the whole party, and enables us to concentrate on the issues to hand which affect rural Australia.” Senator Nash who lives just south of Cowra, said, “There is no better place to live than in the rural areas.”

Hi Canowindra, I want to let you in one of the biggest money mistakes people make. A survey by comparison website, finder. com.au, found that the biggest money mistake people have made is divorce or separation. This is because of the huge financial cost that comes with doing so. However, relationship issues are more difficult to handle than investment decisions, so I want to draw your attention to number two on the list. After divorce or separation, the survey found the next biggest money mistake people made was losing money on investment property. Well, knock me down with a feather… if you believed the so called property ‘experts’ and the punter on the street you’d think it’s impossible to lose money on property. The finder.com.au survey revealed that approximately 1.27 million Australians have lost money on investment properties with the average loss being $106,104. Incredibly the national loss equates to $135 billion. Property is for people who are happy to invest their hard earned money (and usually a lot of borrowed money) in an asset that requires a lot of fees, a degree of stress, offers little if no diversification and is difficult to sell once purchased. When creating wealth there are much easier ways to do it – diversified, easy to manage, low cost and tax effective ways to do it. Unfortunately, most people don’t explore an alternative path because an investment property is all they can imagine. This is usually because people have already purchased their own home and therefore an investment property feels comfortable. Yet the reasons for buying a home to live in versus an investment are completely different. Learn what your options are by making financial education your first investment.

COMPUTER Bytes BACKUPS You have probably been told many times before of the importance of backups, if your computer has a major issue or you get an encryption Trojan that means you could lose your valuable information. The trick is some information you can retrieve from the cloud such as iTunes purchases, yet Dropbox could re-encrypt itself. Best thing to use is the built in windows backup feature to a portable USB hard disk or copy files to a USB flash drive. Photographs and documents are too precious to lose to failures or virus.

The mild, moist spring weather we’ve had across our region has really favoured some plants in the garden. One of those that has caught my eye is wisteria. I’ve noticed wisteria vines growing over fences, pergolas, sheds and trees that are absolutely covered in the beautiful cascading, fragrant blue flowers. There are a range of wisteria types-the most common being the blue/purple flowering Chinese cultivars, but there are also more delicate pink and white flowering Japanese cultivars. Climbing plants have a role to play in most gardens, although you’ll need a fair bit of space and a strong structure to support the vigorous Wisteria. Other climbing plants that can be used to cover ugly fences or building walls include Boston Ivy, climbing Roses, Honeysuckle, Mandevilla and Clematis. Mandevilla laxa (Chillian jasmine) is a deciduous, quick growing climber that produces a magnificent show of white, trumpet shaped flowers in summer. Although vulnerable to late frosts, I have one growing on supporting wire against a north facing brick wall in my garden. I also have a range of white and pink flowering Clematis montana vines growing around verandah posts in the garden, that are budded up now and will be covered in flowers soon. There are some striking, larger flowered hybrid Clematis jackmanii that come in purple, pink, red and yellow flowering forms, and which can give you two phases of flowering (in spring and autumn) if managed well. All of the above climbers are deciduous and if you need an evergreen climber to more “permanently” cover a fence, wall or other structure, the options in our climate are a bit more limited. Chinese star jasmine is a hardy, evergreen climber with glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant, star shaped white flowers in spring/summer. Banksia roses (small yellow or white flowers) are another option, as is Hardenbergia-an Australian native climbing or groundcovering plant that is available in violet or white flowering cultivars.
