Anthony D’Onise at the Wine Awards collecting Windowrie’s wins for Best Young Shiraz, Best Dry Red of the Show and Wine of the Year
Windowrie Wins Wine Of The Year
The 2016 Pier One Sydney Harbour NSW Wine Awards has just announced the main Trophy winners with results exciting judges, industry professional and wine lovers alike. The champion of the Awards was Windowrie Estate, who were awarded the ultimate title of ‘Pier One Sydney Harbour 2016 NSW Wine of the Year’ for their 2015 “The Mill” Shiraz. The Trophy was claimed by winemaker Anthony D’Onise who was representing Windowrie Estate owners the O’Dea family. Their winning Shiraz was described by PJ Charteris as a worthy winner and “a wine that expresses its beautiful fruit first and foremost. It is great to see fruit and distinctive varietal fruit character as the defining features of a wine”.
President of the NSW Wine Industry Association, Tom Ward thanked all involved and commented on the high quality of judges involved in this year’s show. He also said, “This year we continued the theme of going to the regions for judging. We were lucky enough to spend time in the Hunter Valley and I think this is an unique way of judging that exposes not only the judges to the region but also allows the region to get engaged with the show – we appreciate all the people that gave their time to assist in the event. I am happy to announce that next year we are looking to host the wine show in Mudgee and working with them to deliver another great experience.”

Letter to the Editor
I believe it is wise to take the time to write to the people of the Orange Electorate making it very clear why I see the importance of standing up here and now for my principles, my country values and the people of this region. The catalyst for my decision to stand as an Independent, apart from the many people who approached me to do so, was the proposed ban against the greyhound industry. I believe the values of democracy in country areas in New South Wales are being eroded and this is our opportunity to voice our concerns not only over the greyhounds but other issues that are important to us such as Forced Amalgamations which this Coalition promised would never take place. I do not believe in Forced Amalgamations as I believe that country people have the right to participate in the decision making process of issues surrounding the
future of our regional towns and villages.
I will also work hard to close the gap of inequity in funding for rural roads and transport infrastructure. There is also parking at the Orange Health Service, TAFE and its cutbacks, and a respite centre for Forbes and other issues for which I am prepared to fight. I have also been working very hard to find investors to bring an export abattoir to Forbes as this could create 800 jobs for the area. We need a member who is going to listen to the real issues of real people and who will stand up for the values of country people. I am a businessman of 36 years, a farmer, a family man and someone who empathises with the issues that you face as country people. Send this government the message that country people will fight for their rights and Vote 1 Munro for strong representation in Parliament.
Scott Munro

Canowindra Christmas Shopping Evening
Tommy enjoying his semi-retirement with a beverage in hand
Tommy Semi-retired
After recently selling the Deli Lama Tommy Jeffs has decided to finally take some time off to do more of the things he loves. “I want to do all the stuff I’ve been putting off over the years, all the things I put on hold when I was working full time,” said Tommy. Tommy has owned a number of successful businesses over the years and has done a lot of charity work throughout his life. “I loved it, if you love what you do you know it’s all worth it.” Tommy plans to focus on Montrose House, with bookings already filling up until Christmas. He would also love to continue all of his charity work with his focus for next year being on the Canowindra Pre-School. Tommy is planning on doing some travel with thoughts on doing a house swap to Canada, Greece and Tuscany for a period of four weeks at a time. After so much success with Tommy’s doc-
umentary he has been offered to do a series on SBS, which would involve him going into communities to help out and cheer people up. Tommy sticks by his mothers advice being “Treat people the way you want to be treated”. This has stuck with Tommy throughout his life and he has certainly lived by this. Tommy is excited for the future. He got up yesterday to go for a jog, came back to garden, cleaned, set up for his Melbourne Cup Luncheon then went to play tennis that evening. If anything he isn’t slowing down. Although Tommy says, “I am trying to sleep in and I am really enjoying it!” Tommy always tries to cheer up the town and this is reflected throughout all of his actions. Even if its just for a minute to make them smile. “It has certainly been a happy life,” Tommy said.
Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Are you stuck for ideas? Can’t bear the thought of crowded shopping centres and carparks? The solution could be right here in Canowindra. Once again the retailers of Canowindra will get into the festive spirit to offer great gift ideas, bargains, and a festive family afternoon for everyone to enjoy. On November 26th from 3 – 7pm you can enjoy the friendly relaxed shopping atmosphere in Canowindra, listen to some live music, kids can get their faces painted and have a photo with Santa Claus. In the evening why not catch up with friends over a meal or coffee at one of the cafes, pubs or restaurants? Canowindra business owner Liz Mitchell hopes it will be a bigger and better event than last year. “It’s our third event and we are really looking forward to seeing the street full of families getting into the Christmas cheer. Last year there was a great community atmosphere and lots of positive feedback,” said Liz. The aim of the Canowindra Christmas Shopping Evening is to remind people how much variety is available in Canowindra, and to challenge shoppers to think about shopping locally before going online or out of town. Canowindra has a lot to offer coming up to Christmas with everything from art, clothing, giftware and homemades. Home-based businesses from Canowindra are all encouraged to participate in the event as well, and can contact Liz Mitchell 0427 548 891 or Mel Gersbach 0427 673 962 for more information. More details of the Canowindra Christmas Shopping Evening will be in the next edition.

Grow A Mo, Save A Bro
It’s that time of the year again. The hairy season is upon us. Movember has returned for 2016! The key takeaway is men tend to deal with life’s big challenges in ways that can have long-term consequences for their physical and mental health. The research also revealed: • Nearly half (46 per cent) of the men who had experienced a stressful life event such as a relationship breakdown or sudden job loss during the past year reported experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviours • The men surveyed were more likely than women surveyed to cope with stressful life events in unhealthy ways, such as drinking, drugs, taking more risks and becoming more aggressive • Men over 40 don’t recognise this is the peak age for risk of intentional non-accidental injury, such as self-harm or suicide. For 30 days embrace the moustache to help raise funds for men’s health. What mo will you take to the next level, the sporty, classic, iconic, dyed, a bit weird or maybe you might sacrifice a beard to get that mo. Whatever style you choose champion that mo knowing that you are helping to make a difference to men’s health. Don’t want to grow a mo or can’t grow a mo, no problem. Take the move challenge or host an event. See the website for the full details on how to get involved. https://au.movember.com

Bernard Fitzsimon, Caddie Marshall, President of the Chamber, Scott Munro and Scott Barrett
Meet the Candidates For Orange By-Election At a very poorly attended local meeting held in Canowindra last Wednesday a number of locals were able to ask questions of the three candidates who attended the Meet the Candidates night. Those attending included Scott Barrett, Nationals Candidate; Scott Munro, Independent Candidate; and Bernard Fitzsimon, Country Labor. Whilst all candidates were asked what they could personally bring to the table for the people of Canowindra, there were no specifics mentioned, although all candidates said it was important that they address the issues of securing more jobs for the region, particularly in the area of water and agriculture, and to grow agriculture as a primary employer. Scott Barrett said, “In relation to Cranky Rock Dam I will investigate the timeframe for the feasibility study and come back to the town.” In addition, he is focused on seeing clubs and associations within the seat prosper and seeing some investment come back into these small groups. Bernard Fiztsimon indicated that it was not a
priority of the Labour Party to support the Cranky Rock Dam project. He said, “With my background in management I want to see stimulus funding for the public service sector within the region, and assistance to sme’s to build their business.” He also said, “I can see that Canowindra is poised for a really big tourism boost as well into the future.” Scott Munro, when quizzed on the local hospital here in canowindra, said,’ the hospital is absolutely safe and believed that he was the local candidate who is standing independently to represent us, the people of Canowindra. It would appear that we have a large number of candidates to choose from in the upcoming by-election and we all need to remember to place our votes for the candidate who we believe will bring the best results in terms of funding and Government support to the region and village of Canowindra in particular. Don’t forget to vote as it is compulsory.
Coming up soon at the Canowindra High School is the production of Snow White and the Pirate adventure to be held on Wednesday and Thursday 16th and 17th November when students from Years 7 to 11 will strut their stuff on stage in a high seas rollicking adventure. Get in early to get your tickets. Up on the hill at Canowindra Public School, they are holding their school fete this Friday starting at 12.30 pm and going until 3pm. Children from all the classes are getting organised for this and parents help with the organisation of the stalls would be very much appreciated to make this a great fund raising event. Across the road at St. Edward’s Primary School parents interested in making an application for their child regarding the opportunity to take on extension activities in public high schools are invited to seek the relevant information and forms to fill out via the website. For more information please contact the school. The Year 6 excursion participants return on Friday of this week after travelling by bus to Canberra where a busy three day schedule had been planned for the students. These included a visit to Parliament House, Questacon, The Royal Australian Mint, the War Memorial, the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian Electoral Commission. A note and reminder to all that the CWA and Combined Churches Carols by Candlelight will be held on Saturday 10th December at 5pm at the All Saints Anglican Church. Remember rehearsals will start on Saturday 12th November, so if you are interested just head down to the church at 2pm and join in.

Get Outside And Get Better! OMG, we are building a house and I walk around it every day, soaking up the wonder of it. I have noticed what a joy it is to have the sun shining while I am doing it! How amazing does it feel to have the sun shining – to feel that warmth on your body? There’s a reason we are drawn to it – because our body wants it. According to a study done at the University of Essex, England, just five minutes spent outside in “green exercise”, including cycling, walking and gardening, boosts a persons’ mood and level of self-esteem. Another study done at the University of Rochester in New York found significant increases in vitality and immunity from spending time in nature. So often we head outside with shoes on our feet, headphones in our ears, sunglasses on our faces and maybe our airconditioned cars around our bodies! There is a natural healing rhythm of nature that we are just not connecting to any more. The energy you feel from walking barefoot is the grounds electrical energy rising up through you. Research shows that this energy creates a shift in our physiology. It promotes health, better sleep, stabilizes our biological rhythms, knocks down chronic inflammation and reduces and eliminates pain. We could call it Dr. Earth! This disconnect from nature is one of the contributing factors to the alarming rise of chronic disease and in particular, inflammatory–related conditions. Kicking off your shoes may sound far too simple as a method for creating such a powerful healing effect. We know that the sun provides us with Vitamin D and we could say the earth provides us with Vitamin G – Ground. To still an anxious mind, awaken an energetic slump, reduce inflammation, lift energy levels, decrease inflammation, clear your mind, promote better sleep – to enjoy your life more at every level – Go outside! Sit, walk, garden, breathe – get back in touch with the rhythms our body wants to live by -the sun, moon, tides and seasons. Our body is not separate from nature and the more it is in rhythm with nature, the better our health will be!

Favourite Summer Salad GRIDDLED VEGETABLES & FETA WITH TABBOULEH Ingredients ½ a bunch of fresh oregano ½ a bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley 2 red onions 1 large eggplant 150g feta cheese 3 zucchini 2 handfuls of mixed tomatoes 1 bulb of garlic 50g shelled pistachios 2 tablespoons runny honey extra virgin olive oil TABBOULEH 250g cracked wheat 1 bunch of fresh mint 1 big bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley ½ a cucumber 1 lemon Method: Peel and slice the onions into wedges and halve the eggplant lengthways. Add the feta to a small bowl with half the oregano leaves, a drizzle of olive oil season, set aside to marinate. For the tabbouleh, cook the cracked wheat according to the packet instructions, then rinse and drain. Set it aside to cool. Finely chop mint and parsley and cucumber. Once cracked wheat has cooled, mix in the mint, parsley and cucumber, squeeze of lemon juice and pinch of salt and pepper. Grill all of the vegetables and the garlic and, once charred on both sides, transfer to a chopping board. Chop up all the vegetables, squeezing the garlic cloves out of their skins and squishing the tomatoes. Roughly chop the parsley and
remaining oregano leaves into the vegetables, season and drizzle with olive oil. Carefully griddle the whole marinated feta on the barbecue for about 3 minutes Toast the pistachios in a small pan over a medium heat until lightly golden, then spoon over the honey and allow the nuts to caramelise, tossing regularly to stop them from catching in the pan Wait until cool then roughly chop and leave to one side. Spoon the tabbouleh onto a large serving dish, then top with the chopped vegetables. Place the griddled feta in the centre, drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil and scatter over the crispy smashed pistachios. To serve, crumble the feta over the top. Delicious served with toasted flatbreads. Do you have a favourite summer salad? Send it in to win a $50 voucher to a Canowindra Business of your choice for the best recipe. The competition will run for the month of November.
Ben Hall World Premiere Forbes Shire Council, in partnership with Pinnacle Films, is excited to announce that the world premiere of The Legend of Ben Hall will take place at the Forbes Showground on November 12. The world premiere in Forbes will be the first stop in an extensive regional promotional tour for the film, which will see the cast and crew travel through regional NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Mayor of Forbes, Graeme Miller said on behalf of the community he was extremely pleased that the world premiere was being held here. “Council has supported the film from the beginning and I am delighted they are bringing it back to Forbes to give local residents the chance to see it first,” Mayor Miller said. Director Matthew Holmes said it was a privilege to be able to hold the world pre-
miere of The Legend of Ben Hall in Forbes. “Forbes is the heart of Ben Hall country and its rich colonial history - along with all the surrounding districts and towns - makes it the perfect place to launch the film,” Mr Holmes said. Shot in locations across regional NSW and Victoria, The Legend of Ben Hall is a visceral, action-packed epic that tells the story of one of the most wanted men in Australian outlaw history. With the bounty on their heads growing and nowhere to go, Ben and his gang must now fight to the bitter end. The Legend of Ben Hall will be released in cinemas nationally on December 1, 2016.
