The Age of Fishes Museum has just received $300,000 from the NSW Government for the construction of a purpose-built storage facility and research building to house the 370 million year old fossil collection. Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier, Kevin Anderson said, “I am pleased to be here, they have been pushing for many years to get a special climate controlled purpose built facility to hold fossils slabs that have been unable to be exhibited for many many years.” Scott Barrett, Nationals candidate, has welcomed the announcement as a major win for Canowindra. “The Central West has become a destination for tourists and by expanding the museum here will add another level to that. Tourism is key to the future and opportunities of this region,” Scott Barrett said. Warren Keedle, manager at Age of Fishes Museum said, “It’s really important for us, the fossils that we have had for almost

20 years in storage are finally somewhere were they are going to be looked after and preserved for the future.” More funding has been announced for Canowindra with $740,000 being put towards upgrading the Emergency Department for Health Services. Kevin Anderson said, “This is much needed money to upgrade the emergency department, to upgrade the emergency bay, to upgrade the facilities that will provide better services for the community.” Janice Rumph, Health Service Manager at Canowindra Hospital said, “We are all thrilled about it, it will improve patient flow internally and the community will be really happy.”

Dust can also be an issue throughout this time of the year on roads. It can restrict visibility and make for hazardous driving conditions. In the event that you are driving on a dusty road reduce your speed, turn on your lights to make yourself more visible and take care when turning to ensure you don’t lose traction. Fire has a plan - You need one too

Light Up The Night

This years Light the Night numbers were up from last year, with over 300 people attending the event to raise money for the Leukaemia foundation. There were plenty of market stalls, a football game, lots of entertainment and the beautiful magical lantern walk. The rugby verse league game kicked off the afternoon drawing in a great crowd. The League won overall with the score being 31-21, but it was great to see a friendly game. If anything the Rugby won at League and the League won at Rugby. A fun game that will now become an annual event. A big thank you goes to the organisers of the football game with a special thanks to the League boys who went all out and had jerseys, socks and shirts made for the event. There were over 40 market stalls and live music from Rustic Charm and Macy Boland, which was enjoyed by all. Alikinetic dancers put on a great performance for the

evening as well. Minion and Peppa Pig made a special appearance at the event, which the kids just loved. The lantern walk lit up the oval and looked magical as everybody made the walk around the fitness path. Thank you to the major sponsors of the event, Kens Service Centre, Kinsela Agriculture and David Rice Transport, as well as a number of businesses who donated items for the raffle. A big thank you also to all the stall holders that attended, Spencer Chapman for supplying all the music, Cowra Freight for supplying the stage and Farmpix Photography for being the official photographer. Committee member Maddi Kelly said, “The committee worked extremely hard to make this year more successful than last year and we feel as thought we have. We’re looking forward to next years planning after we have a few months off.”

As summer days approach it’s time to start to think about fire safety. The first step to take to ensure your family is kept safe is to talk to them and decide what your plan will be in the event of a fire. Trim all overhanging trees and shrubs to minimise the risk of a fire spreading. Keep your grass short by mowing often and remove cuttings. Be sure to remove any flammable material from around your house such as firewood, old furniture and leaves. Prepare a hose or hoses that can reach around your house. If you live close to grassland or paddocks you can expect the following: grass fires can easily start and spread quickly, grass fires produce a huge amount of heat, grass fires can jump over roads and firebreaks, grass fires can move a lot faster than a bush fire and can catch you off guard. There are a number of things than can affect a way a fire burns including: a fire travelling uphill will travel faster, for every 10 degrees of a slope a fire can double that in speed, as a fire speeds up it becomes more intense and dangerous. Vegetation such as branches, bark, leaves and twigs are all known as fine fuels as they can all burn very quickly and be blown in the wind. Weather is a common indicator of fire season with hot, dry windy days making fires more intense and strong winds can send fire in different directions For more information call 1800 679 737 or check out the website for more myfireplan.com.au

Moyne Walkathon

The Salvation Army Aged Care Plus has released new figures revealing that the 2016 Walkathon has raised more than $80,000 for the Freedom Partnership. The Walkathon event held by Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre at Canowindra contributed almost $600 to the final tally. More than 880 participants attended 18 Walkathon events held over six weeks at Aged Care Centres across New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory. Money raised from the event and from donations will go to The Freedom Partnership, an initiative to end modern day slavery. The funds will provide support for victims as well as providing them with shelter, transport, food and emergency medical care. Aged Care Plus Chief Executive Officer, Sharon Callister said, “The Walkathon represents The Salvation Army Aged Care Plus’ unwavering commitment to serve suffering humanity. The Walkathon encourages people to get on their feet and walking, no matter how far for humanity.” The Freedom Partnership National Manager Jenny Stranger said, “The Walkathon continues to be a great champion and partner in The Freedom Partnership’s mission to mobilise community, business and government to realise their contribution to modern slavery and take action to eradicate it.” The Walkathon is an annual event held in September each year and Canowindra’s Aged Care Plus’ continued involvement in this initiative is much appreciated.

Rev Jono has been called to minister in another place, and will be moving to the Anglican Parish of Mudgee. Rev Jono arrived here in November 2010, so has been our local minister now for some 6 years, with his ministry including Woodstock, Eugowra, Canowindra, Cudal and Cranbury. Rev Jono was presented with a beautiful painting by David Isbester of one of his favourite watering holes, The Junction Hotel where a lot of his ministry was conducted for those in need.
