Andrew Gee MP, Member for Calare pictured with Stephen Harding, Acting General Manager Cabonne Council, just out of Cargo on Monday morning near the towers.

Cabonne Communities Better Connected With New Mobile Phone Tower Switched On On Monday, Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee visited the site of a new mobile phone tower in Cargo, which was funded under Round One of the Coalition Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. Mr Gee said, “The Cargo site is one of 21 towers to be funded under Round One of the program, with a further four to be funded under Round Two, taking the total number of towers in Calare to 25. Black spots in Calare have been a source of irritation for quite some time, so it’s great to see them being cleared up under the Coalition Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program. They are an impediment to country business expansion and can be downright

dangerous in an emergency, when help is needed fast. It’s vitally important that we keep chipping away at these black spots. This tower will greatly assist those people who are on Vodafone and other network carriers. In total, Rounds One and Two of the Coalition’s program will deliver new coverage to 32,000 homes and businesses across 86,000 square kilometres including 7600 of major transport routes via 765 new mobile phone towers.” In addition to the new tower at Cargo, towers in Manildra, Cumnock, Molong and Cudal will be switched on before the end of the year.

LETTERS Dear Editor, From July next year, the NSW Liberal and National Government want every local council to collect a new land tax for them – the ‘Emergency Services Property Levy’ (ESPL). The new state government tax will be included on all council rate notices. But Premier Baird won’t put the legislation to Parliament until the very last minute to avoid a community campaign against this new tax. Parliament doesn’t even sit again until next February. The devil will be in the detail, and it is all being kept secret behind closed doors in Macquarie Street. There could be different tax rates for commercial, residential and rural properties. Some groups are worried that the tax could shift costs from metropolitan or commercial classifications onto residential and rural landowners. The Government has refused to say if it will compensate councils for the cost of

The new Mr and Mrs Locke.

Wedding Bells: Rebekah Jones and Tory Locke were married in Canowindra on Saturday 19th November at home, with a reception at Moorbel Hall. The horse and cart which took the newlyweds from where they were married to Moorbel Hall was supplied by the Royal Hotel. Rebekah and Tory were childhood sweethearts and have grown up together. They will be living in Bathurst where they both work. Proud parents are Ann and Mark Jones and Sue and Jamie Locke. Thanks are extended to the community of Canowindra for all of their help.

Canowindra Christmas Day Lunch reminder: Once again to be held at the Canowindra Bowling Club as a community event, lunch will consist of salads and cold meats, followed by dessert. As this is a free event, the Committee would like to extend an invitation to anybody who is on their own this Christmas to come and join in. Registration is essential and closes on Friday 16th December, with forms being available at Belubula Butchery, Canowindra St. Vincent de Paul Centre, Food Basket and Canowindra Health Centre. Family Day Care Christmas Party: Last week Santa arrived on his motor bike to the delight of the young children who attended the Cabonne/Blayney Family Day Care Christmas party which was held at Memorial Park.

Thank You: One of our locals, Mary Newman had an unfortunate fall in Gaskill Street, last week and wanted to extend her thanks to all those who assisted her. “To the little girl who picked up my glasses, to the girl who gave me a packet of tissues, to the young man who hauled me to my feet (thank goodness for loss of weight), and last, but not least, to our local hero Con, thank you to one and all,” Mary said. Did you Know? 80.4 years is the life expectancy of Aussie men, which is the highest it’s ever been and up from 78.5 years a decade ago.

Santa and his little helper at last year’s Cowra Christmas Street Festival.

Cowra Christmas Street Festival is set to entertain. On Friday 16th December, Kendal and Macquarie Streets will be transformed into a Christmas market place with 100 stalls, an eat street, and local late night shopping! The Old Kentucky Animal Farm with a friendly sheep, a cheeky goat and an affable rooster will let the young ones come close to nature. Cowra Tourism said this this event was a wonderful way to bring the community together to enjoy the festive season whilst helping to bring joy to the local community of Cowra. Canowindra Services Club memberships are now due for renewal and should be renewed by 31st December, so make sure you pop in and get up to date now. Tip of the Week: Know your Skin Cancer Risk. Here are three things which put a person at higher risk of skin cancer: 1. Having a lot of moles, especially on the trunk of your body. 2. A previous skin cancer diagnosis and 3. A family history of melanoma.

Interlock Device Orders And Driving Offences

For many years, the penalties handed out by the courts for drink driving offences included good behaviour bonds, fines, licence disqualification and suspension or jail sentences. Since February 2015 the courts have had a unique sentence made available, the Mandatory Interlock Order for anyone who is found guilty of either: • A first offence for High Range PCA; • Repeat drink driving offences; • Or other serious driving offences where alcohol was a factor. Tom Beath, President of the Services Club congratulates Bunda Breen.

Bunda Breen Celebrates 50 Years As A Member Of The Services Club

“Bunda” Ian Breen has just celebrated 50 years as a continuous member of the Canowindra Services Club. Bunda joined the Club on 8th November 1966, when he turned 21. Of course before that he had been kicked out on a few occasions by the barman as he was underage, however he kept returning. Jack Simpson, the barman at the time poured him his first legal beer. Over the course of these past 50 years, Bunda served on the Board for 11 years, was Senior Vice President for a while and also served behind the bar over a five year period, working every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. Bunda said, “What has made this so special is all the characters of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that I have had the opportunity to meet and form friendships with. When times were tough, bringing up 4 children, and interest rates at 22%, sometimes

just going into the Club to have a chat with my mates made all the difference to my day and state of mind. The friends and characters would lift up my spirits and be there for you in the good and bad times.” Bunda is the 5th generation of Breens to operate the farm he is currently on, and he now sleeps in the same room that his parents did. The farm has been in the family for 116 years. Bunda said, “In my life I have only had two holidays, however I would add, that I wouldn’t change a thing. I could be travelling overseas, or on a great tour, however would not swap anything, for all the fun that I have had at the Club and in Canowindra over the years.” We are giving a shout out to the community, is there anybody out there who can beat Bunda’s record!

The Interlock Order requires a person to attend a program and install an interlock device in their vehicle at the end of their licence disqualification period. Their driver’s licence will have a condition noting that they are only to drive a vehicle which has an interlock device installed. An interlock device is an Electronic Breath Testing Device linked to a vehicle’s ignition. The device prevents the vehicle from being driven unless the driver first blows into the device recording a zero blood alcohol concentration. Whilst driving, the driver must periodically blow into the device maintaining a zero blood alcohol concentration. If the device detects alcohol in the driver’s breath, the vehicles ignition system will not start. Participating in an Interlock Program and installing an Interlock Device can cost in excess of $2,200. If a Court makes a Mandatory Interlock Order against you and you do not enrol in the interlock program then you will remain disqualified from holding a licence (other than an interlock licence) for a period of five (5) years. If you have any queries regarding this or other driving offences contact Geoff Yeo of Peacockes Solicitors, Canowindra’s resident lawyer.

Local Lions Club Supports Light The Night

The students from Brigidine College enjoyed their time in Canowindra.

Brigidine Students Visit Canowindra

Over the past two days we have been lucky enough to host 36 students and teachers from Brigidine College in Randwick here in Canowindra. The students are studying Hospitality and Food Technology (Year 11/12). The Hospitality study compliments units of work such as ‘source and use of information in the hospitality industry’; how to participate in safe work practices’ which covers WHS; ‘hygienic practices for food safety’ plus more. The Hospitality students need to undertake 70 hours of practical and work placement. As part of their stay in Canowindra they have cooked and served all of the students certain meals, for example, dinner one night, and breakfast and they had prepared snacks in advance for the 3 day trip. The Food Technology students study Food availability and selection, The Australian Food Industry, food quality and manufacture. This part of the trip provides them with authentic hands on real life learning experiences. Some of these experiences have included some things that students in the

country take for granted, like holding baby chickens, shearing a sheep, and seeing large scale vegetable farms. The highlights of their trip have included: from the Hospitality students, Isabella: getting to hold the full grown chickens; Chloe: seeing the vegetable farm and how big it is, with vegetables including baby spinach, asparagus, chickpeas, corn and sunflowers; Nicole: seeing the sheep being shorn; and from Emily who is studying Food Technology: holding a baby lamb and then seeing how quickly they grow. Most importantly it was the protocols that were in place to ensure that the correct quality control was there for the end user. During their time in Canowindra they have visited: Woodstock Cemetery, ‘Westville’ farm, Billimari Olives, Rivers Road Organic Farm, Mulyan Pty Ltd, Carabine chicken farm, ‘Oatleigh’ farm, local Canowindra businesses and Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange. Tuesday night was spent having dinner at Tom’s Waterhole and Winery.

Colleen Traves, the local co-ordinator for Light the Night was very happy to accept a cheque for $1000 from Darryl Fliedner, President of the Lions Club on Friday. Darryl said, “From day one, the Lions Club has been involved in this fundraiser and we always run the bbq for the night, with all proceeds going to the Light the Night. This year it wasn’t quite $1000.00 however the Club made up the difference.” Colleen wanted to thank everybody who contributed to the event, with a special thank you to the local Lions Club. All of the proceeds go towards the Leukaemia Foundation in Sydney to help the Foundation enable more Australians to beat blood cancer. Families and friends all come together for a gentle walk carrying one of three coloured lanterns; gold to remember a loved one, white for their own blood cancer journey, or blue to show they care.

End of Year Christmas Parties

Christmas Shopping

At this time of the year there are many end of year parties and there are some things to remember: • Employees should treat the end of year party like any other day at work and behave accordingly. • Being drunk is no excuse for an employee’s actions or comments • Employees should pause before they post any content from the end-of-year function on social media, as nothing is private on the internet. • For employers, remember that you have a number of obligations, including, responsible service of alcohol, providing food and non-alcoholic drinks and providing some options for employees to get home safely after the festivities.

For the first time in many years, Australians are looking to their debit and eftpos cards instead of their credit cards to pay for their Christmas gift shopping. Cash payments are also on the decline. Value for money is still the number one priority for shoppers, with over 70% indicating that price, sales and discounts were one of their top three considerations. Traditional bricks and mortar shopping still attracts at least 80% of the shoppers. With online shopping sitting at around 14% of shoppers, there were still 70% of people who said that online will make up a component of their Christmas shopping. The best way to shop is to shop locally and support the local retailers who support the local towns, such as Canowindra!

Living andLifestyle Summer Is Here

Now that summer is officially with us, St. John Ambulance are sending out a timely reminder to keep first aid skills up-to-date. With people spending more time outdoors in summer there are a number of common ailments which affect people more regularly, including sunburn, bluebottle stings, bee stings, burns and heat exhaustion. St. John recommends wearing protective clothing, using at least 15+ sunscreen, and wearing sunglasses outdoors. It is also important to keep up your fluid intake and avoid extended periods in direct sunlight to avoid heat exhaustion. Here are some tips to follow if anybody is severely affected by sunburn: rest them in a cool place, place under a cold shower, in a cold bath, or sponge with cold water, apply cool gauze padding to the burnt area, give them some cool drinks and seek medical advice for young babies. For children, remember that they also need sunglasses, and they should choose sunnies with 100 per cent UV protection. Other ways to protect your children’s eyes are to limit screen times with tablets and smartphones, encourage them to eat colourful vegetables, have regular checks with your optometrist after the age of three, and ensure that they play for at least 90 minutes outside each day. The snake season is well underway and if someone is affect ed by a snake bite, follow these steps: use a roller bandage or pantyhose and firmly bandage the entire limb, but not so firmly as to stop the flow of blood: start bandaging from just above the fingers or toes and work upwards, splint the bandaged limb, do not move them, and call 000 for an ambulance. Don’t do any of the following: Don’t cut the bitten area, don’t suck the venom out or wash it off, don’t apply a tourniquet and don’t try and catch the snake.

The Country Experience At Rosnay Temporary Changes At Cargo Transfer Station Minor changes to the disposal of green waste and scrap metal are being made at the Cargo Transfer Station whilst work is being undertaken at the old landfill site. Skip bins will be in place for the disposal of these materials until the work is completed early next year. The waste transfer station will operate as normal during this time, however space will be limited for the storage of green waste and scrap metal. Residents with larger loads of green waste or scrap metal are asked to consider taking them to the Canowindra Waste Depot on Nangar Road or wait until the new year when the work will be completed.

‘The Country Experience’ Olive Oil Workshop is being held on Saturday 10th December at Rosnay Organic Farm, Canowindra. This workshop will show you how you can create and make your very own olive oil balm, and at the same time sample Rosnay’s finest organic produce. You can watch a live demonstration and learn how to create and take home your very own olive oil balm. The event will be hosted by Amy Erbacher, a qualified aromatherapist and beauty therapist, and Sam Statham, a pioneering organic farmer and winemaker from Rosnay Organic. This is one of the many events to showcase and support local farmers. Rosnay Organic produces not only organic wines, but olive oil, olives and figs.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Is your property due for an upgrade? Does your investment property need attention? Improvements and renovations to a rental property are important to protect the short term return (rental income) and longterm capital growth of the investment. It is a fact that rental properties are exposed to tenant ‘wear and tear’ and therefore will require work from time to time. A recommendation of budgeting to upgrade the property on average every five years is beneficial. Below is a list of areas where improvements are often required in Property Management: Kitchens: An old kitchen can be renovated by replacing cupboard doors, handles, taps, tiles and benchtops. Painting is the easiest way to change the way your kitchen looks. A lighter colour will brighten it up and make it look bigger. Bathrooms: Sometimes re-grouting tiles and giving the walls a splash of paint can do wonders. Adding floating shelves is a quick, affordable and easy way to add some décor to the bathroom. Exhaust fans: Good maintenance is important to keeping exhaust fans working properly and smoothly. Ensure that there are working exhaust fans in the kitchen, bathroom and toilet areas to avoid a build-up of moisture, mould or heat stains. Landscaping/Exterior Painting: The presentation or the initial impression is important to the property’s appeal. Ensure that trees and large shrubs are pruned, gutters cleaned, wash eaves and external walls. Interior Painting: Paint the walls throughout in a neutral colour and use a washable paint. Remove or paint over any outdated wallpaper. Replacing Floor Coverings: Choose a carpet that is long-wearing and durable. Avoid light tones that will easily mark and stain. If replacing the floor coverings in the kitchen area, avoid using soft vinyl as moving a fridge can easily cause cuts and tears. Instead, use heavy grade linoleum or tiles. By attending to improvements on a regular basis you will be preserving your investment. Backpacker Tax Finally Gets Approved Farmers across the country have expressed relief that the long-running backpacker tax debate has been resolved. However, they remain angry it took so long for federal politicians to agree on a final outcome. From January, backpackers will be taxed at 15 per cent, with the Government recouping 65 per cent of the workers’ superannuation when the backpackers leave the country As part of a last-minute deal the Coalition Government struck with the Greens, Landcare will receive an additional $100 million, a condition farmers have applauded. Andrew Gee, Calare MP said, “growers in my electorate were very pleased to see a resolution to the matter. If it hadn’t passed at 15%, I was going to ask all of the Senators who were blocking it to come to my electorate and harvest the cherry crop themselves. Now it’s a case of getting on with harvesting our wonderful local produce, which is the envy of the world.

P-Platers Banned From Using A Mobile Device From lst December, the NSW Government will introduce a new rule banning all Pplaters from using a mobile device whilst driving, and this now includes P2 drivers. All P-platers and learner drivers are not allowed to use their mobile phones at all, including via Bluetooth, in speaker mode or as a GPS. Joel Neilsen, MD Safe Drive Training said, “It is important to always focus on the road no matter what age or standard of driver you are. With young drivers, who are still learning and adapting to the ways of driving, they can be easily distracted by their mobile phones and as a result many accidents are caused by a lapse in concentration when looking at a phone instead of the road ahead. I know young people today never seem to have their mobile phone out of their hands, however it is not only critical they do not use their phones when driving from a safety point of view, but also from a legal one now.” 5 Practical Tips for young drivers:

1. Keep your hands off your devices when driving – this includes your Navman. 2. Know what is around you at all times

3. When you turn your car on, put your mind into gear. 4. Your brain can’t process much complex, technical or emotional content at one time, so do one thing at a time. 5. If you wouldn’t do your driving actions with a parent or police officer present, don’t do it in their absence.
