WE DO HOME LOANS! Children singing at the All Saints Christmas carols.

Children Join In The Joy Of Christmas At All Saints Christmas Carols

Carols were held at 5pm in All Saints Church Canowindra on Saturday afternoon. With a selection of some of our favourite carols as well as some short skits with both local children and adults playing the role of shepherds and angels, the church resounded to the sounds of Christmas as everybody joined in with the singing. With the local choir leading the way and two pianists playing, there was certainly a feeling that Christmas is just around the corner. The children had obviously been practising their carol, which was Oh What a Glorious Night and both choirs were led by David Bullock. With our Minister Rev Jono departed now for Mudgee it was great to see such a large attendance at the event which was followed by a sausage sizzle, cakes and scones all provided by the ladies of the CWA. Merry Christmas to all!

Dear Sir/Madam, It is anticipated that from 01 July 2017, the “Emergency Services Property Levy” will become law after being presented to the NSW Parliament by the Liberal/National Party, Baird Government. Perhaps the fear of a repeat community campaign such as that over greyhounds and forced amalgamation is keeping the proposal officially under wraps until the last possible moment before the next election. If such a new tax, which will be required to be collected by Councils through the “rate notices”, is to cover State Emergency Services, to attend property damage events etc., as a levy, then it could well be that unless the property (home or business) and contents private insurance cover of 15.6%, “Fire Services Levy” is removed from the current insurance policy, then a definite case of “double dipping” will be the order of the day. It has been a long held contentious is-

sue that everyone receives State Emergency Service when in need, either if by fire or storm etc. regardless of paying an insurance “fire service levy” or not. This is a mandatory charge through their personal insurance policy(s). Those who rent or lease would have to have added a percentage increase in the rent commensurate with the rate of the levy imposed by the Council. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood Canowindra

QUESTION of the week

SNIPPETS... Light the Night has finalised funds for the Light the Night event for 2016. A total of $5,242.20 was raised with all funds going to the Leukaemia Foundation. Be Safe Online: There are, as always at this time of the year, a lot of scams going around. One that is happening on Facebook is that a message comes from a friend with a video, and when you open it it contains a virus, so be careful – if in doubt delete. Another story that is surfacing is to do with Amazon. The thieves are sending out bogus emails that look like they’re from Amazon, telling buyers their order cannot be shipped. When you click a link to confirm your information, an authentic-looking page with the Amazon logo asks you to enter your name, address, and credit card information. When you hit enter, the thieves receive your information and you are redirected to the real Amazon.com. Double check your order on Amazon to see where your order is at. Shopping locally doesn’t have these sorts of problems. The Canowindra Pool will celebrate the story of Christmas as you’ve never heard it before. Come dressed like a lst century Roman, Greek or Hebrew for the afternoon on Friday December 23rd, from 6pm to 9pm. This means you get to dress up, maybe in a toga, with a crown of thorns, or you can simply use your imagination. Experience Middle Eastern food and there is no cost to attend. So bring along a friend and join in the celebration. Call David Bullock on 0402 901 228 or Libby Wilcox on 02 6344 7116 for more information.

the likelihood of animal-vehicle crashes by reducing their speed and remaining alert while driving through areas where animals are more abundant. Three things we can all do to help prevent wildlife injuries occurring over the Christmas holiday: Don’t litter, Slow down at night and take note of road signs. Toys galore: This weekend will see the Massive Christmas Toys Monster Market Night to be held at the Services Club on Friday 16th December. As well on the same night there is the Canowindra Bowlo’s Monster Market night and ham and turkey raffles. Lots to be won, so why not pop into both to see what you can win for Christmas. Did you know that 6.8 million litres of alcohol will be consumed by Aussie over the two week Christmas break. So, what do you need to know about what to have for your breakfast for the morning after: Asparagus – the amino acids in asparagus supercharge the cells that help to break down alcohol; Bananas – the potassium in bananas will help your body start to feel normal, while the electrolytes will replace some of the ones you lost the night before; eggs – it’s the amino acids cysteine and taurine in eggs that will help fix a hangover. Cysteine shows headaches who’s boss, while taurine gives the liver a hand; ginger tea – the magnesium, zinc and chromium in ginger have been shown to ease nausea and fevers as well as reduce pain and inflammation.

Kill your speed and not our wildlife these Christmas holidays. The Australian Veterinary Association is asking motorists to take care on the roads over the summer holidays to protect native species as well as human lives. Research has shown that drivers can significantly reduce

Paralympic Champion Named Cabonne Australia Day Ambassador Former Paralympic cycling champion Lindy Hou OAM will be Cabonne Shire’s Australia Day ambassador next month. The Paralympic gold medallist and world champion will participate in celebrations at Mullion Creek, Cargo and Canowindra on January 26 to celebrate Australia Day. After narrowly missing selection for the Sydney 2000 Paralympics, Lindy won gold and three other medals at Athens four years later, setting a world record in the process. The following year, she set another world record and in 2006 won two gold medals at the world championships. Lindy went on to win silver and bronze at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing before retiring from cycling. However, she has continued to compete in marathons and triathlons and represented Australia at the World Paratriathlon Championships in London. Suffering from the degenerative eye condition Retinitis Pigmentosa, Lindy began losing her sight in the mid1980s and now is almost totally blind. Remarkably, despite her failing eyesight, she represented Australia twice in the World Triathlon Championships as an ablebodied athlete in the early 1990s. Prior to losing her sight, Lindy worked for 15 years in the Information Technology industry and for the past 12 years of her professional career worked as a consultant to many major corporations, dealing with their accounting systems. Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper said, “I was delighted to hear Lindy would be the Shire’s Australia Day ambassador this year.

Local Lady Celebrates Her 90th Birthday May Nell Forbes (Mac) was born in Rylstone on the 13th December, 1926, having a wonderful childhood growing up as a country girl with her younger brother Wal. Mac became a nurse, following in her mother’s footsteps, which she loved. During that time, she fell in love with one of her patients, named Jack, and after a beautiful romance they were married in 1952. Eight years later their son Laurie was born, followed by their daughter, Jacqui (Harkness) two years after that. They settled in Chipping Norton in 1964 and during her years there, Mac was involved in playing and coaching tennis, running a swimming club, and at the same time working at the Primary School canteen. In 1980 Jack and Mac retired to Canowindra where they made many friends. Mac loved being back in the country, and enjoyed more canteen work, as well as antique shop stints and many years at St. Vincent de Paul, at the same time keeping up with her tennis. Her son and daughter and families have all lived in Canowindra with her at times, which keeps her busy, happy and loved. Happy Birthday Mac!

The Scots School Bathurst Reduces It’s Fees For 2017

Headmaster David Gates, has informed parents and staff that the School has made a decision to reduce it’s tuition fees from 2017 by an average of 30%. The fee restructure is possible due to many years of outstanding financial management and the fact that the school is free of debt. “The fee restructure positions the school to continue to provide a quality education at a level more affordable to a greater range of families living in Bathurst and regional centres across the Central West. The School will continue to offer the range of learning and co-curricular opportunities that make us unique,” Mr Gates said. Mrs Lynda Ireland, the enrolments and promotions Officer said, “There are places available for 2017 and we welcome any families who would like to discuss enrolling for next year.”

Cancer Council NSW Launches Its First Ever Cookbook

Cancer Council NSW is offering easy, delicious and healthy alternatives to the traditional Christmas feast this festive season, with the launch of its new Festive Cookbook. Making a few healthy swaps to the traditional Christmas menu can still bring the Christmas cheer to all while making the festive period that little bit healthier. The cookbook recommends to: • Include fruit and vegetables – aim for 5 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit everyday. • Practice portion control – opt for small servings of red meat and avoid the fatty cuts. • Limit alcohol – limit alcohol consumption to no more than 2 standard drinks per day. Why not consider a fruit frappe or soda water infused with fresh lemon and lime as a refreshing alternative to alcoholic drinks? The cookbook is available for free download at www.cancercouncil.com.au/festivecookbook/ Smoked Almond and Prune Turkey Breast Serves: 8 Preparation: 20 minutes Cooking: 40 minutes • 2 tbsp olive oil

• • • • • • •

1 small onion, finely chopped ½ cup chopped smoked almonds ¼ cup chopped prunes ¼ cup oregano leaves ¼ cup fresh breadcrumbs 1 egg, beaten 1 turkey breast, butterflied, skin on

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C 2. Warm half the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add onion and cook whilst stirring for 2 minutes or until translucent. Transfer to a small bowl with almonds, prunes, oregano, breadcrumbs and egg. Season with salt and pepper. Mix to combine. Wipe pan clean. 3. Lay turkey breast opened out, skin side down between two sheets of baking paper. Use a meat mallet to flatten turkey to a rough rectangular shape of even thickness all over – about 2-3cm thick. Remove and discard the top sheet of baking paper. Spread almond mixture over one of the long edges and roll turkey tightly from that side to enclose filling in a log shape. Use kitchen string to truss and tie the turkey securely. 4. Warm the remaining oil in the same large frying pan as above over high heat. Add the turkey and cook for 5 minutes, turning to brown all sides evenly.

MONTROSE House Hello readers, welcome to this month’s column from Montrose House. The festive season is upon us and there are lots of Christmas parties and gatherings here at the house. We had Cowra cake decorators on Saturday 3rd December for a luncheon, then Canowindra Fire Brigade for a wonderful outside seafood buffet that night followed by Orange Ophir Lodge on Sunday 4th for a sumptuous luncheon with a wonderful group of very smart people. Last weekend Gooloogong mixed nuts group of lovely ladies and Sue Flannery from Cudal. The Phoenix had their Christmas party on the terrace Thursday evening with a variety of tapas, really happy crowd of people and then on Friday 9th Beecher Wool Services from Cowra enjoyed their Christmas party, lots of fun and laughs with this jolly crew of mad buggers. Saturday 10th we hosted Gooloogong Historical Society and the Cargo Garden Club so both rooms were filled with laughter, great food, bon-bons, Santa and a lovely atmosphere. That night we hosted Carla Sparkes studio group from Cowra, great bunch of very elegant ladies. Sunday 11th December Yvonne Bell and her group from Orange Book Club which made it a very busy week. This week I held a surprise luncheon for well known identity Richard Glasson which was organised by Brian and Peter Locke which was wonderful and I also have lots of other groups from Cowra, Orange and Canowindra to keep me busy. Christmas Eve I will be holding an 80th birthday dinner for McLaren matriarch, Hugh McLaren with a large family gathering. Christmas Day is all booked out and there will be visitors staying with me for a week. Boxing Day dinner and a couple more family dinners that week and then it is holidays thank goodness. A big thank you to all my clients and family and friends for your continued support in 2016, let’s see what 2017 will bring. I want to wish you all a healthy, happy, prosperous New Year and celebrate this time with family and friends. Best Wishes, Tommy x

Matthew Goff, Dr. Amanda Kerr, Graham Kerr and Jan Kerr at Oxford University.

Local Girl Graduates From Oxford University

Local girl, Amanda Kerr has just graduated from Oxford University in the UK with a Doctor of Philosophy (D. Phil) in Epidemiology. Epidemiology is the study and analysis of the patterns, causes and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It is the cornerstone of public health, and shapes policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare. Epidemiologists help with study design, collection, and statistical analysis of data, amend interpretation and dissemination of results. Epidemiology has helped develop methodology used in clinical research, public health studies, and, to a lesser extent, basic research in the biological sciences. This is the culmination of 4 years of hard work and study by Amanda. Amanda has been working in research at the University since she and her husband Matthew Goff,

travelled to the UK 12 years ago for a supposed 6 month holiday. They now have 2 children 7 and 10 years old and seem to be well and truly settled over there. Amanda, whose parents Jan and Graham Kerr travelled to the UK to attend her graduation ceremony, is currently employed in the Clinical Trials Unit at the University. The graduation ceremony was full of pomp and tradition, being held in the 12th Century Sheldonian Theatre with tradition being upheld with all the proceedings being in Latin! Luckily there was a translation into English for those attending. Highlights of the day were breakfast at her college (Green Templeton) then a compulsory walk to the Sheldonian in the rain and lunch afterwards at a lovely old restaurant with her Professor and two other D.Phil supervisors. Congratulations to Dr Amanda Kerr on this fantastic achievement.
