Dear Editor, I was horrified to read the story in the Molong Express from the new member for Orange on roads in the area. I would like to take the opportunity to set the record straight. It is apparent the new member is not aware of the historic levels of spending in his own electorate yet is attacking me for building infrastructure in other parts of the state. If the new member was genuinely concerned about roads in his area and representing his constituents he could have contacted me. The former member for Orange and I had a good working relationship, he came to me and shared the communities concerns about roads in the area and now they can look out their car windows to see the work we have undertaken; upgrading the Great Western, Newell and Mitchell Highways, delivering extra overtaking lanes on Bells Line of Road and building new structures like Nashdale Bridge on Cargo Road. Since 2011, we have provided a 62 per cent increase in grant funding to councils in the Orange electorate compared to previous Labor governments.
PUBLIC NOTICE
THUMBS UP / DOWN THUMBS UP To Mr Mac and his dedicated team at St Eddies. Another great year for you and your students. Enjoy the break, you have truly deserved it. THUMBS DOWN To the Canowindra Hospital for their lack of interest in my injury leading to me having to travel to Orange.
PUBLIC NOTICE: @ 9pm on 23rd Dec, weather permitting, a professional FIREWORKS display (5 mins) will be fired from the vacant block between the river and Canowindra Caravan Park, in honour of Jesus at Christmas. Firing will be performed by a licensed pyro-technician, and Fire & Rescue NSW will be in attendance. Designed to be viewed from the Pool. All welcome, please respect safety zones. Enquiries: David Bullock 0402 901 228.
Some of the major projects delivered in cooperation with the former member and I since 2011: • More than $754 million invested to upgrade Great Western Highway – 45 percent increase compared to Labor • We have already spent a record $400 million to upgrade Newell Highway • And when you include the extra $500 million commitment under Rebuild NSW, that equates to a 177 percent increase compared to Labor • Major $40 million upgrade of Mitchell Highway at Guanna Hill • Investing $4 million to upgrade roads in Orange including $2 million to fast-track the Southern Feeder Road and $2 million for extra overtaking lanes on Cargo Road. • $2.8 million to help upgrade the Forest Road Rail Bridge as part of the NSW Fixing Country Roads. We heard from the community when they wanted bike paths across the Central West so we are also investing historic funds to deliver them– with a number already completed in Forbes and an additional $2 million has been provided to Orange City Council to build cycle paths across the city. The member for Orange is insistent on criticising the NSW Government’s commitment to building cycle paths – is he already out of touch with the communities of the Central West? Don’t they deserve to have important infrastructure like bike paths? I am sure many people were disappointed as I was to see this criticism of the Roads Minister by their new local member rather than trying to build a constructive relationship. 3 More Sleeps to Christmas: Are you all prepared? Have you done your Christmas Shopping, and prepared your list for Christmas lunch or do you still have something to buy on your shopping list. With some recent figures released it is amazing what we consume on the big day. 2.5 million mangoes will be sold by Woolworths in the lead up to Christmas, and 100 tonnes of oysters will be moved through Woolworths as well. As a nation, we are expected to spend $28b on our credit and charge cards and $24.5b on debit purchases this Christmas. With the weather uncertain, with the likelihood of a shower on Christmas Day make sure you are organised with umbrellas if you are spending time near the beach or water. There is a low pressure trough which will be sitting in the Tasman Sea and as we know from the past 12 months, the weather is very unpredictable at the moment. If you are travelling overseas in 2017 get in before Christmas and lodge your application for a passport as prices increase by $20 from lst January, 2017. Canowindra Services Club memberships are due on 31st December, so remember to get down to the Club to renew them on time. The Canowindra P A & H Show Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank sponsors and volunteers for the support given throughout the year. If you would like to find out more about ways you can be involved with the Ladies Auxiliary in the Cobley Pavilion please contact Margaret Hamilton on 02 63450427 or email debrutter@bigpond. com. They would like to wish everybody a happy and safe Christmas.
Asthma Apps for Kids Project: With one in ten Australian children having asthma, good management can control the disease and prevent symptoms from occurring or worsening, and self-management programs for children with asthma have shown to be effective and Smartphone apps can assist in delivering these. The Asthma Apps for Kids project is trying to better understand how young children and their parents interact with asthma apps and the study is currently recruiting partipants aged six to eleven and their parent or carer based in NSW, Qld, Vis or SA to participate. A $50 Westfield gift voucher will be given to each family to acknowledge their valuable contribution to research. For more information, go to www.caretrackaustralia. org.au The Canowindra Business Chamber would like to wish all Canowindra business owners and residents a safe and merry Christmas. 2016 seems to have passed with a flash. Significant moments include the collaboration of business owners and community groups for the October Long Weekend/ Charlie McCarron’s Auction and more recently the Canowindra Christmas Shopping Evening. We still have a couple more shopping days before Christmas so please consider a Canowindra gift for under the tree. For those business owners that get to have a break over the Christmas period, please enjoy and recharge. 2017 looks to bring more opportunities and challenges and we look forward to working with everyone in the new year. We invite non-members to consider joining the Chamber as it does provide a platform for business owners to network and work together. Merry Christmas.

Preparing Your Home And Family For Bushfire Season Summer is definitely here. For most of us it means beach trips and BBQ’s with friends. It also brings much hotter weather and the chance of bushfires. Preparation for bushfire season should be a year-round task, but if you haven’t started yet, here are some tips to help as a guide and remember it’s never too late to make preparations to protect your home and family. Stalls at the 2015 Christmas Street Festival.
Kendal Street ‘Open For Christmas Street Festival’ NOW ON 22ND DECEMBER
With the inclement weather last Friday , the Cowra Christmas Street Festival has now been moved to tonight. Christmas is a magical, yet busy time of year, no more so than at the Cowra Christmas Street Festival. The main street of Cowra, Kendal Street will be closed down and reopened as a twilight market place that will be jampacked with locally handcrafted wares, soaps, jewellery, candles and more. This festival is the perfect time to tick off your Christmas shopping list with unique gifts that will be treasured. All things Christmas exist at these markets, from the traditional to the quirky, thanks to such a vast array of people and artisans. The retailers and market stallholders are committed to ensuring shoppers have all they need for the big day. The Festival are happy to welcome back the much adored Cowra Information and Neighbourhood Centre Christmas Wonderland, the Macquarie Street Food Court and of course Santa and his elves. Visitors can also enjoy an enchanted experience in the Christmas Wonderland at Squire Park with free workshops and complimentary festival Santa photos, a fantastic range of family attractions and entertainment options and several mouth-watering food vans to choose from across Kendal & Macquarie Street. Join in all the fun that The Old Kentucky Farm offers, get up close and personal, pat the animals and even help the farmer with feeding time. The farm will feature the likes of Peppa and George the pigs, Milkshake and Lavender the alpacas, Mike, Mali and Mindy the lambs as well as Skip and Tinkerbell the goats. There will also be some smaller animals to hold such as ducks, bunnies and two very naughty kittens who like to escape!

1. Trees and plants provide fuel for fires. Remove the build up of dead branches, bark or shrubs 2. If you’re planting a garden, plant trees away from the house so limbs and branches don’t hang over your roof and drop leaves in gutters. These can ignite quickly if burning embers fall on them. 3. Clean leaves from your roof, gutters and downpipes 4. Remove all flammable material that is within 20 metres of your property. This includes flammable liquids and newspapers or cardboard that you have stockpiled for recycling. Check this list for what you may need in a bush fire situation: • During a bushfire, power and water may be cut off and this often happens in advance. A small power generator will allow your family access to small appliances and allow laptops and phones to continue to be charged. • Portable battery radios allow people to listen to news updates • Good quality torches and long life batteries are imperative • Packed bag with fresh clothes which can be easily carried • A quality high-pressure fire fighting pump to help with any small spot fires and to water your garden/foliage on your property in preparation

More than 55,000 bales were offered in the final sale of the year. Merino fleece generally finished the week 10 to 20 cents above levels recorded in the previous sale. The skirting market out-performed the fleece in Sydney and Fremantle, generally 20 cents dearer, while Melbourne was firm and unchanged. The oddment market was one of small & mixed movements, leaving the Northern Merino Carding Indicator 7 cents cheaper. It was also the largest Crossbreds offering in 2 years which saw prices drift lower, poorly prepared & unskirted lots in particular were neglected and increasingly discounted as the sale progressed. The NRI finished the year 122 cents higher at 1412 cents (the highest calendar year closing figure on record). Turnover for 2016 was just over 2.5 billion dollars (AUD) and the average return per bale of $1,478 is the highest on the AWEX database (which commenced in 1997). Sales resume week commencing 9th of January 2017.

Harvest 2016
Harvest for 2016, if the weather holds will hopefully be completed by Christmas. The rest of this week, weather wise looks fine, so many of our local farmers will be finished just on Christmas. Local farmer, Charlie Balcomb, said “We have had a slow start to the wheat with some green wheat, however now we are in full swing, with the yield being some of the best that we have ever harvested. The wheat has been going 4-6 tonmes to the hectare, and we will be storing most of the wheat for the moment. Barley has also been excellent, going 5 tonnes to the hectare and faba beans, which are exported to Egypt also went well at 4 tonnes to the hectare. Faba beans are a major legume consumed worldwide” Other local farmers still have lupins and barley to harvest, although should also be finished by Christmas.

Canowindra High School Celebrates Excellent HSC Results The weeks of waiting are finally over for the class of 2016 and their teachers with the release last Thursday of the Higher School Certificate results and Merit List for Distinguisher Achievers. The results were received with a range of emotions for the thirty six students from Canowindra High School who successfully studied and completed their HSC across nineteen courses. The best performance for the school was recorded in PDHPE by Sithatshisiwe Ncube who received a band 6 placing her in the top 12.5% of the state and on the Merit list for Distinguished
Achievers. Other subjects where students performed extremely well were Agriculture, Design & Technology, English Advanced and Standard, Industrial Technology and Senior Science. Overall the results were very solid and complimented the student’s previous success in being recognised with major awards at the school’s Annual Presentation Night and gaining early entry to a range of universities. Across all subjects many of the students achieved their personal best and are to be congratulated for their commitment and hard work. On an
individual level, Sithatshisiwe Ncube, Meg Austin, Lachlan Balcombe, Riley Frost, Matthew Harrison, Thabiso Ncube, Tammonwan Phumthong, Kelly Price, Maddison Spencer, Rachael Springall and Becky Thornberry all achieved sound results attaining multiple band 5’s and 4’s. The teachers are very pleased with the student’s performance and commend them for their success and achievement of the rewards of their study and preparation. We wish all students the very best in achieving their goals throughout the future.
Congratulations... The students and staff of Canowindra High School congratulate Year 12, 2016 on their success in the HSC and wish them well for their future endeavours. Strive To Do Well

The Ghosts Of Financial Past, Present And Future
The Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival Food & Wine Night Market.
Australia’s Quintessential Bush Poetry Festival - Held In The Birthplace Of Banjo BANJO PATERSON AUSTRALIAN POETRY FESTIVAL RUNS 16-26 FEBRUARY 2017 The Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival which celebrates one of Australia’s most iconic poets and regional Australia’s contribution to the literary and cultural heritage of the nation, will run for ten days from 16-26 February 2017 in the birthplace of Banjo in Orange, Central NSW. “This is a festival that not only celebrates one of our most iconic locals, A.B ‘Banjo’ Paterson, but also the authenticity of the Australian bush and its’ people and poets,” says Justin Byrne, Festival Chairman. “In a region renowned for its incredible cool-climate wine and as being a dream destination for foodies, the Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry Festival provides us with an additional very hospitable umbrella of culture - under which we can gather everyone together to enjoy Australian history, song and prose in an enjoyable and convivial country atmosphere.” The Banjo Birthday Brekky and the Fes-
tival Food & Wine Night Market on Friday 17 February officially open the event, to coincide with Banjo Paterson’s birthday. A.B ‘Banjo’ Paterson was born on the property ‘Narrambla’ in the Orange region in New South Wales on 17 February 1864, and grew up to become one of Australia’s literary legends. “It’s fairly clear that Banjo’s country childhood had a strong influence on him, being considered the ‘bard of the bush’ for iconic poems such as ‘Waltzing Matilda’, ‘The Man From Snowy River’ and ‘Clancy of the Overflow,” explains Byrne. Now in its fourth year, the Banjo Paterson Australian Poetry festival continues to grow from strength-to-strength and has captured not only the hearts and imagination of the local and regional community, but also that of poets, explorers and history buffs from across the nation and the Australia Pacific region.

The story of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future can easily be adapted to your financial life. The Past Have you ever stopped to reflect on the financial decisions you’ve made in the past? Which ones were good and which were not so good (or bad!)? You can’t change the past, but it can teach us valuable lessons. You only have a certain number of pay cheques left in your working life… how many have you already had? Did you make the most of them? The Present Do you know how you’re travelling moneywise right now? Are you on track for where you want to get to? What are your goals and what’s your plan? The present presents the opportunity to stop and take stock of your situation. What are you currently doing that’s going to improve your financial future? What else could you be doing? And what are you currently doing that’s making your financial future worse? The Future Just like it was for Scrooge, the future is still yours to create! The decisions you make in the present will determine what that future looks like. Scrooge hated Christmas, calling it “humbug”… and sadly many Australians hate what they wake up to later in life. it’s only then they realise they needed a plan when they were younger. They face decades of being poor… BAH! HUMBUG! Often the hardest part is getting started. At Wealth Train, we’re teaching people what they need to know to take control of their financial future. Nothing fancy, just the tried and tested methods… the ones that have been proven to work time and time again. Merry Christmas! Daniel and The Wealth Train Team

Attracting Native Birds Into Your Garden One of the great pleasures in any garden is to see beautiful Australian native birds attracted to have a feed, sing their songs or even build a nest. They can also play a role in reducing pests such as insects, slugs and snails! The types of birds that I love to see and hear in my garden include wrens, finches, honeyeaters, parrots, kookaburras and magpies. So, what attracts birds to your garden? Some people take great pleasure in putting out seeds or bits of bread or fruit on bird feeders hung from trees or on their verandah. I don’t use this approach as I would rather see the birds attracted to seeds or fruit or nectar that are provided naturally on the plants growing in the garden. Protection from predators is another important factor, particularly for small birds such as finches, wrens and honeyeaters. These birds love gardens where they can hide in thick or thorny shrubs and small trees-which also provide great nesting habitat for these guys! On the matter of predators, cats are a major problem for these small birds too so if you want the birds, the pussy may have to go. Access to water for a drink or a bath is another attractant for birds- so a small pond or bird bath will help the birds as well as providing a “feature” in the garden. Not surprisingly, the plants and trees that seem to provide most attraction for Australian native birds in the garden are predominantly Australian native plants! These include grevilleas, banksias, wattles (acacias), bottlebrushes (callistemons), leptospermums and melaleucas. There are many cultivars of these that flower beautifully, add colour to the garden, are hardy and attract birds. Casuarinas and some of the flowering gums (eucalypts) also attract birds and provide great nesting habitat. Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

The improved deli selection at Lawrences IGA.
Local IGA Store Undergoes Some Changes Over the past few weeks locals may have noticed some changes at the local IGA store. In the deli department, there is now a much larger range of products to choose from, and with the new displays, some mouthwatering goodies. Best sellers include the boneless ham, the new range of pastries, including filo pastries and sausage rolls, and a full selection of chicken products, including chicken kebabs, breast fillets, schnitzels and cooked chickens. New products also include fresh quiches, cheeses and sundried tomatoes. If you are thinking large groups over the Christmas and New Year break IGA can also organise some deli platters for that special occasion and if you are looking for something quick and easy, you can choose from their chicken, lamb, beef or pork roast dinners with roast vegetables. There is also a wider range of breads in the bakery to choose from. Remember that IGA offer a price match promise on 100s of everyday items.
MESSAGE from the Publisher I would like to extend a very big thank you to all of our readers, contributors, advertisers, contractors and the team at the Phoenix Group of Newspapers for making 2016 such a successful one for us. Despite the changes in the media landscape, we decided to launch two new free local newspapers in Parkes and Hilltops (Young) in March of 2016. With this came the normal challenges and without the support of all those mentioned we would not have been able to accomplish what we did. 2017 will be even bigger and better with the launch of some new features, an app, and new projects being planned. We would ask that you continue to support us, as we strive for excellence and being involved at a local level in these communities. Remember that we are your local voice in the communities we serve. We wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and best wishes for a successful 2017. Cheryl Newsom
