January always marks a time of celebration with the Australia Day awards held at Morris Park. Citizen of the year for 2016 went to Owen McLaughlan, an ex Agriculture teacher at Canowindra High School and Junior Citizen of the year was awarded to Matt Harrison, student at Canowindra High School. The celebration continued throughout the month with many little smiling faces as kids transitioned from preschool to kindergarten. Catch of the weeks flooded in this month with the big fish biting.
Steve Maere finally popped the question to Dani Jenkins while on Holidays in New Zealand on top of Mount Maunganui and the team at IGA continues to give back through their community chest programme, raising a remarkable amount for local organisations. A total of $3210 was raised each for the Canowindra Golf Club and Beyond Blue. The Canberra Raiders made a visit to Canowindra Public School to promote healthy living and to show how to effectively work as a team.
Over 50 women attended International Women’s Day at the Canowindra Bowling Club to encouraged belief and power in each individual to change the world. The event raised $975 for the organisation One Girl. Easter fell early this year in March with many celebrations throughout the town, including the annual hat parade. A mystery ride for charity was organised by Malcolm Millar, which consisted of a bike ride through surrounding towns stopping off at five different pubs to raise money for Ronald McDonald House.

Canowindra glows for another year at yet another successful Balloon Glow. Despite the chilly weather thousands still flocked to the event to see the balloons light up the night. Anzac day continues to be well attended with hundreds attending both the dawn and midday service to pay their respects to all personnel who served and are still serving today. Canowindra’s very own Fitness Path was officially declared open with sixty people walking, cycling, hopping, skipping and jumping around the path.
Canowindra Preschool geared up to host a Great Gatsby Gala fundraiser to help keep the preschool community going after becoming self-sustainable due to state government funding decreases. Canowindra Produce was given a special acknowledgement at the 2016 Central West Orana Awards for 25 years of association with the Chamber. The Canowindra High School Canteen got an upgrade with over 12 months of refurbishments. Stainless steel benches, new serving counters, increased storage, paintwork and a new look menu have been some of the new changes.
Canowindra Health Centre put on a Cuppa for a Cause at Billy Paul’s Carpet as part of the Biggest Morning Tea to raise money for the Cancer Council. The Great Gatsby Gala Ball fundraiser was full of glitz and glam and raised $23 500 from the night for the Canowindra Preschool. When it rains it pours, with 36 millimeters of rain falling in two days, flood warnings were issued. Canowindra Lions Club celebrated 50 years of service to the community

Joanna Balcombe New Cabonne Youth Ambassador
Local girl Joanna Balcombe has been selected as this years Cabonne Youth Ambassador. The Mayor and Councillors chose Joanna for her outstanding achievement academically, on the sporting field and for her involvement in many community events at a meeting held in December. Joanna was awarded youth of the month earlier last year and competed against other winners of the award to then be selected for the Ambassador for Cabonne. “It’s a huge honour to be selected for this role and I am looking forward to this opportunity,” said Joanna Balcombe. As Ambassador Joanna will attend Australia Day ceremonies at Mullion Creek, Cargo and Canowindra where she will give a speech about what she has achieved and the opportunities she has been given by
living in the Cabonne Shire. She will also present awards to winners on the day. Australia Day awards will be held on Thursday 26th January at 1.30pm at Morris Park. This year Cabonne Council’s Australia Day special guest is Lindy Hou, former Paralympic cycling champion. Lindy Hou won gold at Athens followed by silver and bronze at Beijing. Lindy Hou suffers a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa and began loosing her sight in the mid 1980s, Lindy is now nearly completely blind. Dear Editor “Trying to build a constructive relationship.” (no pun). Duncan Gay (Letters, The Phoenix Issue 422, 22Dec16) Minister Roads Maritime and Freight, seems to be thin skinned from criticism over the lack of meaningful infrastructure spend across NSW. We know that all the dozens/scores/hundreds/great mobs of bicycle riders you see on the roads (often outnumbering kangaroos in some areas) are a hazard and that there should be more bicycle paths and tracks to get them away from other road users. It’s a great shame that the bridges and other road improvements do not cater for the high bicycle numbers that travellers see as they move about the State. It is suggested that more ‘wheel-in’ stops should be provided for the worn out rider in an attempt to have them straighten up and not wobble around as they pedal or coast up and down dale in a hope for regulating their numbers ‘out on the track’. Collision with bicycles
and riders is to be avoided of course for, as we know, they do not have much protection and at a distance can resemble a roo. Perhaps, Minister Gay, (oops, is that allowed?) could build parallel path’s for the bikers - outside the road along the boundary fence say, with a protective barrier that hides them from possibly distracted vehicle drivers. Perhaps the local Huntin’, Fishin’ and Farmin’ fella could offer some infrastructure advice, structured from his travels around the place doin’ all those things. Merry Christmas Canowindra and a Happy New Year Regards Bob Sherwood

QUESTION of the week Hot weather continues: High temperatures are expected over the coming days and people are reminded to have access to well ventilated or air conditioned areas, stay inside for the hottest part of the day and ensure you drink plenty of water.
What is your New Years Resolution?
Fun fact: You shouldn’t really clean your ears with cotton tips as often the cotton tip actually further blocks your ear and causes impacted earwax. Earwax is completely normal and actually helps to keep our ears clean and free from infection. The Plague and I window decorated by Debbie Guihot for the Christmas competition.
Canowindra Christmas Display Winner Announced: First prize goes to Debbie Guihot with her handmade traditional display at The Plague and I. Businesses throughout Canowindra are to be commended on their participation in this year’s Christmas Display Competition, sponsored by Cabonne Council and supported by the Canowindra Business Chamber. Judging took place on Friday 23rd December by former Canowindra resident and business owner Rob Rogan, and Dale Jones of Cabonne Council, who both expressed their amazement at the effort made by some business owners. Canowindra Police Update: If you have a local non-urgent call then the local Police are here to help. Simply by dropping into the station or if it is unattended, just drop a note under the door with your contact details and the problem that is of concern. The local Police attending in Canowindra are Senior Constable Therese Miller and constable Alan Bezett. Alternatively if the matter is urgent please call 000 or 131 444. Calling 131 444 will ensure that the local Police on duty receive a copy of this message as well.
Need a holiday? Be at the Services Club every Friday Night from now until the 13th April. Simply purchase meat raffle tickets and you are in the draw to become one of the thirteen lucky finalists to win a $4,000 Flight Centre voucher.
Melissa Johnson: My resolution is to not sweat the little stuff and to just go with the flow.
Miss out on a yearly Calendar? The Canowindra Phoenix have some yearly calendars left so if you missed out drop into the office to ensure you are organised for this year. Reminder for deadline: Due to the public holiday next week the deadline for submitting anything to the paper will be Monday at 3pm. Cancer Council: The Cancer Council will be launching a campaign at the Orange Post Office Lane on Monday 13th February at 10.30am to highlight the need for Palliative Care services in the Orange community. Advocates and Cancer Council staff will be on hand to answer any questions, and will also be looking for support in signing the Palliative Care Pledge.

Royal Commission Into Child Abuse
Guests enjoying a delicious Christmas Day Lunch organised by volunteers of Canowindra.
True Spirit of Christmas
The Canowindra Christmas Day Lunch was another great success with 63 people attending the event. Guests were spoilt for choice with freshly prepared savouries, salads, turkey, ham and desserts with tea, coffee, soft drinks, punch, water and lollies for those with a sweet tooth. Many thanks to the people and organisations that happily gave their time to come help with the table and hall decorations, and the preparation and serving of the meal Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Taking the time out of your day to help at this community event is much appreciated and the effort volunteers put in was certainly shown through the attendance and spirit of the day. A special ‘Thank You’ is extended to the Canowindra Bowling Club for donating the use of the Function Centre and Kitchen, Canowindra @ Home for the dessert preparations, St.Vincent de Paul, The Canowindra Food Basket, Canowindra Health Centre and Belubula Butchery for providing the venue for information and Bookings Forms,
also The Canowindra Phoenix and The Canowindra News for continually supporting The Canowindra Christmas Day Lunch through their publications. “Congratulations to everyone because it is only through each of your efforts that such a successful and needed event can occur. Canowindra truly has the heart and spirit of community and lives out the meaning of Christmas,” said Deb Rutter on behalf of the Canowindra Christmas Day Committee. For many Christmas can be a lonely time of the year but thanks to the Canowindra Christmas Day Committee and volunteers, members of the community were able to feel the true spirit and joy of Christmas over a delightful meal with friends. “Thank you to the guests who shared their Christmas with us and we look forward to Christmas 2017 when we once again come together to celebrate Christmas and community,” Deb Rutter.
In 2013 the Australian Government established a Royal commission to investigate and report on institutional child sexual abuse. Many of us have been saddened and distressed by what the commission has revealed especially the many revelations uncovered in long trusted faith based organisations. A Royal Commission has the power to inquire into an issue of national concern, report and make recommendations to government and refer offenders if needed to the police. As of September last year the commission has referred more than 1659 matters to police for further investigation, has taken over 43,000 phone calls, letters and emails, and has held more than 4,700 private session with victims of abuse. The commission estimates that there are 100,000 victims in Australia who may be eligible for child abuse compensation. The commission has recommended that the federal government establish a national redress scheme to compensate victims of abuse. In response the federal government announced that it will set up such a scheme to give people who suffered abuse whilst in the care of private or public institutions access to compensation and professional support. It is anticipated that the redress scheme will commence in 2018. Importantly survivors need to know that they do not need to wait for the redress scheme to obtain compensation and professional support. A survivor can now seek compensation and support directly from the offending institution and thus should seek legal advice regarding their options as soon as possible. For confidential and sensitive advice on this or any legal issue Geoff Yeo of Peacockes Solicitors is available to assist with your queries.

Healthy Living &
Lifestyle
New Years Resolution
How’s the new gym membership, quitting alcohol and ditching the smokes going, still on track right? The most common New Years Resolutions such as the ones above are unrealistic goals set bound to be broken. New Years Resolutions are all about breaking bad habits to achieve a positive goal, but why put so much pressure on yourself. Yes, make changes to improve your health and put in more effort here and there but try making other goals that are much kinder for your health in the long run. Kinder resolution goals to try would be laughing more, making a new friend, stepping out of your comfort zone more often, making the effort to see an old friend, learning a new skill, travel more, love more and fear less. Make 2017 the year where small things count as they make up most of our days in the end. Regardless of what New Years Resolution you may have, this is the year to conquer those goals. Setting goals can help you feel less overwhelmed with the task ahead by giving you direction, focus and motivation to get to the end destination. Here are some tips to help you get there: • Realise that the new year is just another day and that making resolutions on this day is no different to any other • Pinpoint your most realistic goals • Write down your resolutions
• Focus on one change at a time • Use positive language rather than demands • Make the change a gradual one • Get some support from those who have your best interest at heart • Review your progress regularly to help you refocus • Build on your resolutions • Celebrate small successes Another important aspect of achieving our resolutions, goals, and ambitions, whatever you want to call them, is your willpower. Many people assume willpower is something you either have or haven’t got. Here’s where they are wrong. Willpower can be trained, like any muscle the more you exercise it the stronger it gets. Willpower is important to have but hard to train. Too easy we can slip into moments of laziness and be object to bad influences that surround us. Keep focused, refer back to your goals and get real. If you want change you are the only person who can do it. Stop with the excuses and make 2017 your year!
