Australia Day Celebrations

Australia Day was in full swing last Thursday with many choosing to celebrate with family and friends at ceremonies throughout the area. Canowindra Citizen of the Year was awarded to Darryl Fliedner, a stalwart of the Canowindra Lions Club. Darryl has been the club’s president eight times and is a life member of the Lions Club. Darryl was also previously involved with the Age of Fishes Museum board and is the president of the Canowindra Harness Racing Committee. Darryl Fliender was honoured to receive the award and said, “I thank everyone very much. This award belongs to them (Lions Club) as much as it belongs to me.” Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Brooke Kinsela for all of her hard work

and involvement in the community. Brooke is involved in the Student Representative Council, Swimming Club, dancing and volunteers for a number of different organisations. “I couldn’t ask for a better community to grow and learn in, “ Brooke said. Community Group of the Year was awarded to the Pythonetties. The club offers a netball program for 40 young girls in Canowindra. The Net Set Go program ran from April until August 2016 for the first time and through promotion of the program they have been given funding to construct the first ever netball courts in Canowindra. Meg Jobson accepted the award on behalf of the organisation. Continued on page 2

“It is an honour to accept this award especially for 2016 being our first year. Mandy Towsend was really the driving force behind this and 2017 is set to be just as good,” Meg said. Local Joanna Balcombe also spoke at the Australia Day Awards as Cabonne Youth Ambassador. Jo spend the day travelling between award ceremonies speaking about her experience of growing up in the Cabonne area. “If I didn’t grow up here I may not have had all of the opportunities I have been given,” said Jo. Mayor Ian Gosper attended the Australia Day Awards and thanked everyone for their attendance in the beautiful park. Special Guest Lindy Hou, former Paralympic champion, spoke about her struggles growing up after moving to Australia when she was 14 and having to not only learn how to speak English but Aussie too. Lindy really emphasized that, “all of the citizens like yourself make Australia great and each and everyone of us have the opportunity to be great.” The local tradition on Australia Day being the Canowindra Cup, involving pulling on a

rope attached to a wooden horse through your legs, was once again one of the main attractions of the day. This race is much harder than you think and definitely entertaining for all to watch. This year’s winner went to Anthony Durkin with a close finish. Cargo also celebrated the day with awards and a BBQ. Citizen of the Year was awarded to Robyn Price. Robyn is president of the Cargo P&C at Cargo Public School where she organises a number of events throughout the year. Cargo’s Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Rhys Maere for his demonstrations of leadership and willingness within the community.

QUESTION of the week

Congratulations Brendan and Zoe Nash! The couple were married on Saturday in a garden wedding at Doug and Penny Nash’s place ‘Cranbrook’.

SLOW DOWN: School is back which means school zones are now in force. Please drive 40km when in a school zone in the standard times from 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm.

Lunch box ideas: • Pizza Scrolls: Defrost puff pastry. Cover pastry with pizza sauce. Cover with desired toppings such as cheese and ham. Roll up pastry then slice into 1.5cm segments. Cook on a lined baking tray for about 15minutes on 180 degrees. • Kids trail mix: 2 cups of a cereal such as Nutrigrain, 1 cup of raisins, 1 cup of dried fruit, 1 cup of nuts, 1 cup of dark chocolate chips. Mix all together. • Frozen Fruit cups: 1 cup of strawberries, 1 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of banana, 1 cup of crushed pineapple and 1 cup of Orange juice. Mix all together, spoon into small containers and freeze.

Claire and Tommy Phelan going into Kindergarten at St Edwards: Mum Bec said she is very emotional and very proud. Claire said when she woke up that this was the best day of her life.

Hallie Whiteman’s first day of preschool: Mum Samantha said I feel a bit emotional as it’s her first day but she was happy when I left so that’s all that really matters and that made me happy.

Writers Group: A new writers support group will be held on Monday 6th February at Orana House Canowindra from 6-7.30pm. For more details please contact Deb Rutter on 6344 2490. Armpit detox: You do a cleanse for your body but have you ever thought about cleansing out those armpits. It turns out your sweat actually doesn’t smell, it is only after it mixes with the bacteria on your skin that it does. Switch to using a natural deodorant, one without aluminum, as this is what blocks your pours. This will pave the way for less sweat and less stench.

How do you feel about starting school this week?

Get creative this Valentines Day: Instead of the usual chocolates why not make or bake something yourself. Nothing says loving like something from the oven.

Moorbel Hall Markets: Are on this Saturday the 5th from 8am-12pm. It is the first one for the year so there should be lots of goodies.

Congratulations on your 60th Wedding Anniversary Ray and Mary Anderson! Ray and Mary were married on the 16th February 1957 at St Johns Church in Eugowra.

Health Smart Beat Back To School Anxiety

Life Just Got Better! Isn’t this what we all want? Life to be better! This is what we are working towards – our life to be better. I want to recommend two things certain to improve your life on every level. One is absolutely free, no side effects, available 24/7, everybody can do it and is the number one healer. I know, it sounds too good to be true! AND if it’s that good, why is it such a secret? It increases longevity, increases anti-aging hormones, repairs DNA, increases grey matter and brain functioning, improves levels of happiness, reduces blood pressure, cholesterol, cancer, improves digestion, brings your body to the right weight, improves sleep – I could keep going but you get the gist - number one healer! Ok – so what is it. Drum roll…… Meditation. I hear it, Couldn’t it be something easier? I have tried it and I can’t do it; It’s too hard…. I have the answer for you. If you are ready to take this up and change your life on every level with least effort, I am running a programme as part of Cowra’s Bring Healthy Back. It’s free! I am conducting a research on people who meditate consistently for 8 weeks, every day, you choose how long. I will give you all the support and information you need to get started and keep going. To sign up, come to the Cowra RSL for a free information evening on Wednesday 15th February at 7.30pm, or Saturday 18th February at 2pm. And No. 2 is Yoga – starts Monday 6th Feb, CWA Hall Canowindra. Its time for your life to get better! Just do it!!

This week, as many kids head back to school there are so many things to think about from new school supplies, books, uniforms and lunches to pack. Have you thought about what they are going through and the pressure that they may be under? Anxious feelings are expected as they enter a new chapter of their life and get use to the change. Often this transition can be much more difficult for some families members too. To ensure everyone copes with the new change make sure everyone gets enough sleep and develops a new routine. It is also important to encourage your child to share his or her fears and to discuss that it is normal to have these concerns. Avoid just giving your child reassurance that nothing bad will happen as nobody knows that. Instead explain how they may solve those issues if they arise. Try to bring out the positives with this new experience such as making new friends and ask them what they are most excited about. You might even be surprised with the answer. Most importantly be mindful of your own behaviour when around your child. When saying goodbye after dropping them off at school be cheerful about what the day might bring and excited for the experiences they will have. Kids will pick up on your emotion more than you think so be sure to be more mindful of this.

After being in a routine and as the weeks progress keep an eye on your child to see how they are coping. If you have any concerns get in touch with a psychologist to help make this transition easier. Always keep in mind to be an empowering parent. Every child holds his or her own greatness and it is your job to help nurture and believe in that too. The idea of empowering your child is to make them feel and believe they have the power to do anything they choose. Limitations shouldn’t be set which is something adults always do. If you ask any adult right now if nobody in the world got paid but you still had to work, what would you do? This question often surprises people and reminds them of being like a child where you take away all of those barriers you put up. Create that space for your child where anything and everything is possible if you are willing to work for it. Let them believe in the unknown and let them fall and pick themselves up again. Why should we not live a life of adventure and do what we truly love. Empower your kids, encourage them and most importantly love them.

Dr O’Ryan Celebrates 30 Year New Look Age Anniversary In Canowindra Of Fishes! It’s hard to miss the new bright blue sign at the Age of Fishes Museum, which is part of a new re-branding strategy. Warren Keedle said, “It’s good to see the new sign up, rest assured we will be cutting back part of a branch to make it more visible”. More plans are under way at the Museum with soil testing being done recently for the new building. Work has also started on the verandah with plans of it being complete in a month’s time. The verandah will be used to hold presentations and talks and will be another useful tool and enjoyable space at the Museum. The next step is beginning the plans for the new building to house the whole fossil collection and to allow scientific workshops with university and high school students. By Taneil Thornberry

This month Dr Nicholas O’Ryan celebrated 30 years of practice in Canowindra. When asking Dr O’Ryan about how he felt about this milestone he said, “My first thought is that I couldn’t do another 30 years! Actually, I’m pretty proud of myself; I arrived up here on my own, on my birthday to start a new life in a town I’d only visited once before!” Relocating to Canowindra was a big move, with the closest family being his soon to be wife (they married 3 weeks later) Kathryn’s mother who lived in Cudal. Dr O’Ryan worked at Orange Base after finishing Uni and his sister, her husband and children also lived in Orange. Dr O’Ryan said, “I have always felt a connection to the district.” Initially only wanting to stay about 7 years they soon stayed longer, “Our children are Canowindra locals and we realised that Canowindra gave them many opportunities and the all important sense of community that you just can’t get in the city.” Dr O’Ryan said. Dr O’Ryan first decided he wanted to practice medicine when he was about 13 years old. He was focused on this goal throughout his schooling years and worked diligently to make it a reality. Dr O’Ryan has really enjoyed living and working in Canowindra and loves the opportunity to develop his skills and provide a wide range of services that you wouldn’t get in the city. “I am privileged to be able to apply an holistic approach to my patients, many of whom I have known for 30 years! Brendan Nash How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? All of my life so 41 years. It’s a good place, everyone is pretty friendly. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? On the farm and I like the lifestyle that comes with farming. What do you do to unwind after work or on the weekends? Have some beers, sit back and think about what to do for the next day. What are you really good at? Driving anything from trucks to windrowers (possibly drive Zoe crazy as well). If you could have a super power what would it be? To read peoples minds so I could know what Zoe was thinking. What is your pet hate? When people hold a grudge. Tell us about your best holiday? My soon to be honeymoon but before that probably Thailand as you get treated like a King.

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun It is one year since Peacockes Solicitors opened their doors in Canowindra. Time has certainly flown, which must mean law is fun. The town has been welcoming and embracing of the firm, common feedback from locals has been how good it is to again have a lawyer living and practicing in the town. Work has been plentiful and surprisingly varied. On behalf of the directors of Peacockes I extend a big thank you to all the new clients for work they have entrusted with the firm.

RESIDENTIAL RENTAL BONDS

On maybe a less fun note from 30 January 2017, all landlords and property agents must be registered with Rental Bonds Online. It will be mandatory for landlords and real estate agents to invite residential tenants to personally lodge their residential rental bonds in NSW via the Rental Bonds Online (RBO) service. The service will make it easier for tenants to ensure their bond has been lodged and easier to obtain their bond after completing the lease. A landlord or agent, who fails to invite a new tenant to lodge their bond using RBO, prior to accepting a bond, will be in breach of the Residential Tenancies Act. Tenants who do not have internet access can continue to give their bond directly to the landlord or landlord’s real estate agent. More information about this service and the new requirements is available at http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/rentalbondsonline If you have any queries about leasing, rental bonds or any other legal matter contact Geoff Yeo at Peacockes Solicitors.

Not Good Enough Telstra! Canowindra business owners are angry and frustrated at the lack of communication about the Telstra outage last week. Businesses were left without phone connection, some without Eftpos and all not knowing when it would be fixed. Toby Newcombe owner of Belubula Butchery said, “We had no Eftpos for a week, suppliers couldn’t get through and travellers couldn’t be served.” Toby had to divert phone calls through to his mobile and he was particularly concerned over the weekend period functioning without Eftpos, usually his busiest days. A number of businesses were affected in Gaskill Street including IGA as John Lawrence said, “It has interrupted the running of our business.” There was little to no communication from Telstra about the issue and it was only after numerous phone calls were made from business owners that Telstra Area Manager Mike Maron issued this statement. “A cable issue caused disruption to fixed line services for a small number of premises in Canowindra. Services were restored for a large portion of affected customers. We do apologise to our affected customers for the inconvenience and thank them for their patience. This has required complex repair work and we assure everyone that we have been working as quickly as possible to restore their services.” Hopefully this will be the end of it!

Some of the Canowindra Bowling Ladies red faced and tired after playing in 37 degree heat.

Lady Bowlers Brave The Heat

The Canowindra Ladies Bowlers showed their commitment and dedication on Tuesday as they braved the sweltering heat. President Betty Jenkins said, “We will play up until 38 degrees and it was 37 so it was a close call.” Betty assured there were regular breaks taken and everybody stayed hydrated. Some even had a stand out game such as Moyna Rue, Libby Balcombe, Margaret Gosper and Colleen Crump who were the last ones to make it inside. Betty said, “Lucky there was a breeze that kept it bearable but we had some very keen bowlers despite the temperature and all allocated games were played.” The ladies have all been practicing leading up to pennants where they verse other towns in the district. Another great night of touch with a storm coming over later in the night to cool people down. The wet conditions made play more difficult to control the ball with many dropped balls throughout the second half. The Bushrangers won 10-3 over the Unicorns. 3 points went to Nick Wilson, 2 points went to Pedro Tapin and 1 point to Dylan Slattery. Royal Hotel dominated against MNT with a win of 11-1. Top try scorer was Pete Guthrie who also was awarded 3 points. 2 points went to Brittany Whatman and 1 point to Corey Parrish. It was a close game between Canowindra Real Estate and Central Motors sitting at a 1-1 draw for most of the game. Central Motors were able to get one more in to win the game 2-1. 3 points went to Will Wright, 2 points to Mark Fisher and 1 point to Jo Coady.
