Kindergarten students from both St Edwards Primary School and Canowindra Public School were busy settling into their first week of school.
Welcome Kindergarten!!!
Schools back and some new faces have arrived at both St Edwards Primary School and Canowindra Public School. Kids aged from 5-6 years old were grinning ear to ear, some with a bit more caution then others on their first day of big school. St Edwards Primary School has 8 students in kindergarten this year and they have Mrs Waters as their teacher. Canowindra Public School has split their kindergarten class into two, combining some with year 1. The kindergarten teacher is Mrs Lloyd and K/1 have Mrs Duke. Both Principals Ken McNamara from St Edwards and Sharon Hawker from the Public School both said students are settling
in well and they look forward to watching them learn and grow. Over the next coming weeks as the students develop a normal routine they will begin learning how to do tasks such as cutting in a straight line, following directions, standing in line, listening, learning the alphabet, learning how to read, learning how to spell and practice colouring in the lines, just to name a few. Parents are reminded to pack lots of cold water as the coming weeks heat up. Ensure your child brings a hat to school and pack ice bricks in with lunches to keep everything cool.

As everyone is back into the swing of things and kids are back to school normal routine will start to begin. That is something I will have to get used to. Transitioning from studying at university to full-time work has been somewhat interesting as I have been more restricted with the amount of spare time I have. I have realised routine and scheduling is important to fit everything I want to do in. After studying Journalism for 3 years at Charles Sturt University Bathurst I am looking forward to putting all of what I have learnt into practice. As I begin to settle into my new position here at the Phoenix it certainly feels like home. Getting out and about, visiting the schools where I went, businesses I have worked at and seeing familiar faces are what make my job so great. Getting to talk to people on a regular basis is what I enjoy the most. Finding out new stories and interviewing different people about their experiences and challenges is what makes being a journalist so rewarding. So far I have attended Australia Day
Awards, visited all of the schools, attended swimming carnivals, swimming pool fun days and sporting events. Being at these events and getting involved in the community is what is important to me and I would love to come along to any events you may have coming up. I thank everybody for welcoming me with open arms and I look forward to what 2017 will bring. Taneil Thornberry

We all crave love and companionship so why ignore the celebration of love this Valentine’s day on the 14th February. Think back to the beginning of a relationship where sparks flew, gazes longed and passion was ignited. What happened you must be thinking? Effort is the answer and too often people slip into what is easy and comfortable. Make the change this Valentine’s Day and bring the romance back into your life. Romance is the key to keeping that burning passion alive for one another. Whether it be big or small gestures, just make them count. Be thoughtful in giving and grateful in receiving. Be spontaneous, go on a daring adventure, cook them a meal (even if you are a horrible cook), make them something special (even if you don’t have a creative bone in you) and most importantly listen. Listen to not only their tedious rants and raves but their goals, aspirations, dreams, wants and desires. Get to know one another again, like really get to know each other. Valentines Day is known as the day of roses, chocolates and cards but where did it actually come from and surely there is more to it? It is believed that Valentines Day originated from the ancient Roman fertility festival Lupercalia. During this festival young women would place their names in a large urn, young men then drew a name out and whomever they drew they were now romantically linked to them for the next year. Wherever it came from why not celebrate what all humans crave in life, being love. Celebrate it, rejoice in it and enjoy it. As “the best love is the kind that awakens the soul, that makes us reach for more, that plants the fire into our hearts and brings peace to our minds.”-Notebook There comes a time in every relationship that sacrifices must be made in order to create balance. However do not sacrifice your own happiness in order to do so. Sacrifice comes in the form of making more of an effort and finding that balance. Whether you choose to show your love with a bunch of flowers to your loved one, a gift voucher to be pampered, a movie, a card, chocolate or anything at all, just celebrate with your loved one! If you are looking for love, it’s not over yet. Head to the singles night at Freemasons Hotel!
A Gift Voucher would make the perfect Valentines gift.
Any Valentine's Day flowers ordered by 10th February will include a free small box of chocolates.

Cody’s Cambodian Experience
Cody Smith is a Year 12 student at Canowindra High School with a heart of gold. His caring and compassionate nature took him on an adventure to Cambodia over the summer to volunteer with Projects Abroad. Cody spent two weeks in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh volunteering at a Preschool to help improve the lives of young people. “We would do calming exercises to get the kids organised than we would teach the kids numbers, the alphabet and fruits in English as well as improving the Preschool itself, such as painting letters and numbers on the walls. We also built a fence to help define the school area more,” Cody said. Cody was among 14 other students, 10 from Australia, 3 from Korea and 1 from China. Cody said it was pretty full on for the whole 2 weeks but he did get some time to explore. “I did get to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World being Angkor Wat,” Cody said. Cody worked hard to learn some of the language before he went. “I really got a hold of the language and really learnt a lot of the basics things,” he said. When asking Cody what his biggest take away was from this experience was he humbly responded with. “I’ve travelled as a tourist before but this time I really wanted to be able to feel a lot more of the culture by
helping out. One of the biggest take aways would be learning the Eastern cultural beliefs and the way they operate,” Cody said. Cody is now hoping to study Anthropology after school and hopes to do more work like this. Cody thanks the Lions Club, The Canowindra Services Club, The Masons, Gooloogong P&C and Canowindra P&C. aw’koon ch’ran (Thank you muchly in Cambodian)

They are Merelene Byrnes, Paul Woolley, and Marg Morris. The three lucky winners will each receive a $100 voucher to be redeemed at a Canowindra Business of their choice. The winners can collect their vouchers from Adloyalty any day from Monday to Friday. The business prize winners for the competition were Debbie Guihot with her handmade traditional display at the Plague and I and 2nd prize went to Tommy Jeffs with his extensive and bright display at the Old Hardware Store. Judges were impressed with Debbie’s creativity as everything in window was handmade and Tommy is to be commended on the scale of his display. Special mention goes to The Shearing Shed, The Garden of Roses Cafe and to the Newsagency for adding a lovely traditional Christmas feel to the shopping precinct. Caddie Marshall, Chamber President said, “The Canowindra Business Chamber would like to take this opportunity to thank all participating businesses for bringing a special festive feel to Gaskill St and apologises for the lateness in this announcement. As this fell right on Christmas Eve, and a lot of the members have been away it has taken us rather longer than we had planned.”

BECOME ALARMED BY SMOKE ALARMS
Smoke alarms have no doubt proven to save lives, however sometimes Landlords put cost above the protection and safety of their tenants. Too many times we see on the news stories of properties burning to the ground, and a fire spokesperson saying the occupant(s) perished because; • They didn’t have a working smoke alarm; • The batteries had been removed; • The smoke alarm was placed in the wrong position in the house or; • No smoke alarms were installed at all. There has been too many times that we have found this has occurred in a rental property. Ray White Real Estate Cowra urges our landlords to consider that the tenants’ life is directly benefited by such a device so we must work together to ensure that not only is the best type of alarm installed, but that it is also correctly placed inside the property. Hard-wired smoke alarms are effectively the best type of alarm but all alarms must be checked by a qualified tradesperson who can ensure that, should smoke and/or fire be present, the alarms will sound when required, potentially saving lives. Therefore as responsible property owners these factors must be considered: • Do I have the right smoke alarms installed for maximum protection? • Are the smoke alarms more than 10 years old, and should they be replaced? • Are the smoke alarms correctly positioned in the property? • Do I have a smoke alarm technician ensuring these smoke alarms are working on a routine basis? The injury (or worse) of a tenant from a fire is something no-one wishes to happen. Not only do you need to know that your duty of care to the tenant is fulfilled as property owners but that the tenant also has the assurance & peace of mind knowing that they are adequately protected. Sometimes, we struggle to keep track of these things in our own home so how are you meant to keep track of them in your investment properties? Ray White Real Estate Cowra Property Management Team is your solution to delegate the burden of this so that it is our responsibility to organise the service call out and you can put it out of your mind. Just another way that we strive to making people happy and making your investing experience as easy as possible. We would be delighted to assist with your current or future purchases - call us today.
