Finally A Decision Has Been Made: No Amalgamation For Cabonne Council
There will officially be No Amalgamation for Cabonne Council after an announcement on Tuesday from the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, assuring the Government would not go ahead with pending amalgamations in rural areas while proceeding with those planned for Sydney. The Canowindra Phoenix along with an ecstatic Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper, has welcomed the announcement that the NSW Government will not proceed with a proposed merger with Orange and Blayney Councils, describing the decision as a great victory for local democracy. “We have always stood up for the majority of Cabonne residents who have made
it very clear over the past four years they are strongly opposed to any amalgamation,” Mayor Ian Gosper said. Communities have clearly and consistently indicated they are worried about the lack of representation if the councils were to merge, so news of no amalgamation has locals jumping for joy. Cr Gosper thanked Cabonne residents who had strongly supported the Council’s amalgamation fight, particularly the ANTY (Amalgamation No Thank You) group, which waged a high profile campaign against the proposal.

Jock Haynes ANTY Group member said, “I would say we are relieved more than anything. We are very happy a decision has finally been made.” The ANTY Amalgamation group has been the driving force to stop the merge of Cabonne Council with Orange. “One of our main goals was to keep us in the eye of the politicians and in the media, and I feel we have done that. We have been fighting this since May 2015, so a bit under 2 years now.” Marj Bollinger who was at the forefront of the ANTY group had this to say, “There is still a long way to go before all of the wrong that has been done is set right and our thoughts must go out to all of the ‘soldiers’ still out there fighting in the trenches to save their councils.” After much persistence and pressure from local communities in Cabonne the people have finally been heard. Mayor Ian Gosper said, “I am more excited that people power has finally won out.” Marj Bollinger makes a personal thanks for the ongoing support but “most of all congratulations must go to all of the people in
Cabonne and elsewhere who have supported ANTY throughout this ‘unwinnable’ David and Goliath fight by turning up at rallies, meetings, signing petitions and voting with their feet in November to make their voices heard. The decision comes shortly after Nationals leader and deputy premier John Barilaro vowed last month to end local government mergers in the bush. The pressure mounted on the Berejiklian government to act on this policy and today they finally have a clear answer. “We also appreciate that there will continue to be angst in some communities, but what we’re doing today is drawing a line in the sand and providing certainty for the future.” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

QUESTION of the week What’s the best thing about the swimming carnival?
Locals Stuart Gavin, James Russel, Mike Pora and Snake Russell with the group from Australia that competed at the Shearing World Championships in New Zealand.
Adelaide Ellis: I enjoy the music, the laughs and watching the younger kids have a go.
Locals Compete At Shearing World Championships
Local shearers Stuart Gavin and James Russell made the trip over to Invercargill, New Zealand for the Wool Shearing and Wool Handling World Championships. Stuart and James travelled over with a group of 18 competitors from all across Australia including WA, VIC and most from NSW. Among the group there were 3 people competing in seniors, 4 in intermediate and the rest in the opens competition. The event took place over 4 days from the 8th – 11th February. Both Stuart and James were pleased with their results in the Senior Shearing with Stuart placing 37th and James 48th out of 70. “We are pretty happy with our results as we had never shorn the breed Romney before but they were a lot better to shear here as they have less wool. We have the experience we just couldn’t keep up with the Kiwi’s pace,” Stuart said.
Before competing on Wednesday both boys spent two days practicing in the shearing shed in New Zealand to help prepare them for the competition. The World Championships only happen every 3-4 years and are held all over the world. The next championship will be held in France and both Stuart and James are hoping to go. “We have learnt so much in the couple of days we have had here and we are both looking forward to hopefully competing in France,” Stuart said. Both Stuart and James are to be commended on the quality of their shearing as they received minimal penalties for this. The boys arrived back into Australia Sunday night and were straight back into shearing on Monday. “It was a great experience and I’d love to go back to shear in New Zealand one day,” Stuart said.
Wade Kinsela: I love the atmosphere here and I love to swim!
Laura Kerr: Being able to hang out with friends and cool off on a hot day.

The Central West has a great climate, well at least for 6 months of the year. In autumn and spring we don’t need to be concerned with extreme temperatures, however on the other hand summers are quite warm and winters are a bit cool. At Glassplace they have Low E grey tinted glass, which performs well in both summer and winter. So how does Low E tinted glass work? Low E grey glass cuts down the “U value” of a window or door. This is the amount of heat moving through the glass due to the difference in temperature inside, to outside of your home or office. Low E glass can reduce your heating bill and your cooling costs. Low E grey glass also reduces the total solar radiation coming through the glass. This is the Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient or SHGC. And it reduces glare. This makes your home more comfortable in summer. The lower the numbers, the more benefit you will get from Low E glass. Now you are probably a bit confused, but if you want to know more, come into Glassplace’s new showroom in Clarke St Parkes. They will show you examples of Low E Glass in full sized windows so you can see how it looks. Then you can have a go at our Radiant heat display to actually feel the difference Low E glass can make to your home. COME ON IN!

New Chapter For Liz After Saffi As one door closes another opens for Saffi owner Liz Mitchell. Saffi will be officially closing its doors by the end of February as Liz heads back to nursing. Liz said, “I’m just going back to where I started, but knowing more about where I want to go with it”. Liz is currently interested in going into community health and possibly women’s health, palliative care or oncology down the track. When asking Liz about the transition from retail to nursing she said, “It’s amazing you use a lot of similar skills, it’s interesting how women are programmed to be critical of themselves, you use a lot of similar interpersonal skills.”
Liz is looking forward to the next chapter and a regular pay she laughed. “I really have totally loved this, it has been quite therapeutic and was good to do while the kids were little as I could be flexible for them,” she said. Saffi will be available online until everything clears, however be sure to pop into the shop to grab a bargain and to farewell Liz as she embarks on a new journey. Check out Saffi’s Facebook page for more updates about sale items. Liz concludes with a big thanks to the community for all of their support especially from two organisations. “I would really like to thank the Golf Ladies and The Historical
Society have just been incredibly supportive with their fashion parades,” Liz said.

Australian Wildlife rescue organisation (WIRES) gives advice on how to help an injured animal.
Advice From Australian Wildlife Rescue Organisation WIRES
Local WIRES volunteer Katie McVicar from Cowra said, “WIRES received over 6,000 requests for assistance for animals in need and advice about native wildlife between 26th December 2016, to 8th January 2017”. WIRES believes that it is important that the public knows what to do if they have an accident involving an animal or come across an animal that has been involved in an accident on or near the road. Do you know what to do if you find an injured animal on the side of the road? “Only pull over when it is safe to do so. Approach animals with caution. They are frightened and in pain and will lash out to preserve themselves,” Ms McVicar said. The next step is to contact WIRES on 1300 094 737. There is now also the WIRES Wildlife Rescue App that can be downloaded from Android and Apple stores. The app allows people to find a vet, become a volunteer and find information
about certain animals. If the mammal is deceased it is important to check pouches to make sure there isn’t a baby inside. When a deceased animal is lying on the road it is imperative to move it to the side so that it not only doesn’t cause a vehicle accident, but to protect scavengers from being injured or killed too. WIRES is currently seeking members of the local community to consider volunteering to help save the lives of the many unique native animals in the region. Caring for NSW wildlife requires specific training and licensing, WIRES is holding a Rescue and Immediate Care Course (RICC) in Grenfell on 4th March 2017. The course is fully accredited and costs $175. For more information please visit WIRES.org.au, email Training@wires.org.au or call Hannah Ryan on (02) 8977 3392.
Canowindra sizzled over the past week in a heat wave that hit town sending temperatures into their mid 40’s. In one of the hottest days on record in February, demands for electricity were high and so were the fire alerts. NSW Regional Director Stephen Lellyett said, “A stationary mid-level ridge over central Australia had caused a build-up of heat over the interior of the continent over the last few weeks. An approaching front to the south is now dragging this hot air down across New South Wales”. NSW Rural Fire Service were alert and quick to act on any fires that did start in the extreme conditions. Forecast models indicated the front swept through the state on Sunday, leading to some relief from the extreme heat from Monday. As Canowindra simmers back down it is still important to keep water up to animals and keep them in the shade if possible. Extreme caution is still advised with potential grass fires still at a high risk as summer continues to dry out the landscape. People are reminded that lighting a fire on a Total Fire Ban day is an on the spot fine of $2200. The penalty for tossing a lit cigarette doubles during a Total Fire Ban from $660 to $1320. With the temperature nearly hitting halfway to boiling point many spent their day inside under the air conditioned, at the Swimming Pool or Wyangala Dam to cool off.
Mitch Stanley, Becky Thornberry, Lachlan Balcombe and Max Wensley wished they were skiing out at Wyangala Dam but unfortunately it was closed on Sunday due to the extreme heat.

Ride For Country Kids
This year Ride for Country Kids kicks off in Wagga Wagga on Sunday 12th March where a team of cyclists will travel through Gundagai, Cootamundra, Young, Grenfell, Cowra, Canowindra and Cudal over three days. Over 100 cyclists will ride 420km with scheduled stop offs at schools and community groups. The cyclists will get to travel on some of the most remote and scenic cycling roads all to raise money for a good cause. The purpose of the ride is to raise money to support a greater number of country kids with complex developmental and health needs. Royal Far West Pediatrics Development Program and Telecare run the event designed to fill a critical gap for rural and remote families and communities. Ambassador Tour de France commentator Mike Tomalaris and tennis legend Wally Masur will also be joining the team of cyclists. The fundraising event concludes with a dinner in Orange on Tuesday 14th March at Orange Ex Services Club commencing at 7pm. Tickets are $75 for a 3 coarse meal. The fundraising event goes to a good cause and makes a positive impact to rural families. “Jack is a very bright boy but he tires quickly and quickly becomes frustrated with his balance and mobility issues. At Royal Far West we have the help of occupational and physical therapists, as well as psychological counselling to help him develop coping skills. We also value the support we receive as a family because Jack’s condition affects all of us. For example, his loving older sister is now learning that she is not Jack’s sole carer and she has her own childhood to enjoy.” - Ondria, Jack’s Mum Ride for Country Kids have a target of raising $650 000 for country kids in need.
