Joanna Balcombe with her first place ribbon for Junior Judging Sheep (meat) and second place ribbon in Junior Judging Fruit and Vegetables.

Local Girl To Compete At Royal Easter Show

Joanna Balcombe, a year 12 student at Canowindra High School, is off to the Sydney Royal Easter Show to compete in the Junior Judging Competition. Joanna Balcombe won the Group 10 Zone Final for Junior Judging at the Eugowra Show recently in the Sheep (meat) category, to allow her to advance to the next stage of the competition. Joanna said, “I feel good about winning at regionals because I have competed in a number of shows last year and kind of had expectations for myself.” To receive the Junior Judging title Joanna had to examine and then place the four animals in the Sheep (meat) section in the correct order from most to least desirable based on their overall characteristics.

Your dream home is just a phone call away!

Joanna then had to explain her placings and the reasons behind each to an overjudge and the surrounding spectators in an oral presentation. Joanna is excited about competing at the Royal Easter Show and says,“At Sydney the atmosphere makes you feel like an actual judge. I’m looking forward to it as every show you learn something new, you can never know everything.” Joanna has been competing for a number of years now with her father Phil Balcombe so she knows what to expect. “I have been doing Junior Judging since about year 8, and since then have competed at Sydney previously as well as other shows like Dubbo and Bathurst. Good luck at the Royal Easter Show Jo!

On Thursday the 9th March come along to the Old Vic Inn Canowindra to celebrate International Women’s Day. Tickets are $30 each with $5 from each ticket being donated to the Pay it Forward charity. The Pay it Forward charity was set up by our guest speaker Karlie Irwin, Orange’s Local Women of the Year. Her social care charity helped around 4000 people in need in Orange just in the past 15 months. Karlie used her garage to store and manage goods, food and clothing to be distributed to those families in need. Her charity has now expanded to a community shed in Glenroi Avenue and has a team of about 25 volunteers. They have provided complete furniture packages to needy families, assisted with moving people and have provided a lawn mowing service to prevent people being evicted from their rental accommodation. Karlie will give a talk on the night about her experience and being bold, which is what this year’s theme is all about. There will be drinks and canapés served as well as live music from Josh Maynard

on the balcony. Bookings for this event are essential and can be purchased from the Phoenix office or phone 6344 1846.

Karlie Irwin, founder of Pay it Forward, is the guest speaker at International Women's Day.

QUESTION of the week

SNIPPETS... On this day: In 1998 Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace knighted Elton John for his contribution to music and charity.

What is the best thing you have won?

Congratulations Kelly Price: Recipient of Australian Federation of Graduate Women’s Central West. The annual scholarship was awarded to the 2016 HSC School Captain.

The thimble won't pass GO another time as it will be replaced by a more modern symbol.

Monopoly getting rid of the thimble: The sewing accessory has been apart of the board game since 1935 but after a recent vote it will be replaced with something more modern. We will have to wait until March 19th to see what made the cut with thoughts of it being a hashtag, emoji or a rubber ducky. Wrap with Love: Knitters are wanted to form a Wrap with Love group here in Canowindra. Meet the fourth Wednesday of every month at Canowindra HACC office at 10am. Any donations of 8ply wool or 100% acrylic can also be left at the HACC office. Contact Nina 6344 1213, Dawn 0427 441 272, Ruth 63441146, or HACC 63441199 for more information. Commissioning and Induction of Reverend Joy Harris: The community are invited to attend on Saturday 11th March commencing at 11am at All Saints Anglican Church. There will be a lunch available at the CWA rooms afterwards. Touch Football: Central Motors and Bushrangers through to finals, Unicorns to play MNT and S&S to play Canowindra Real Estate. Royal and Cranbury have been knocked out.

Canowindra Bowling Club: Names are now being called for this year's NRL footy tipping competition. A sheet is on the bar for names. Wednesday badge draw is $1,100 and Friday badge draw is $200. Bingo this Thursday 11am. Canowindra Business Chamber: Is calling for anybody who is interested in taking on the Secretary and Treasurer role. Graham Beasley was elected the new President and said, “I am very pleased to become president of the Business Chamber and I believe Canowindra has a lot to offer in both tourism and small business. The Business Chamber intend to attract more small business to Canowindra to match steady growth in new house building and increase in young families in the area.” New $10 note: Pays homage to Dame Mary Gilmore and AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson, two celebrated Australian writers. The Reserve Bank will showcase the new $10 note on Sunday the 26th February at Yeoval as part of the Banjo Paterson festival.

The new $10 note will be showcased in Yeoval on the 26th February.

Kevin Walker: Last week I won a meat tray, I’d like to win the lotto though. Got to be in it to win it.

Andrew Gee, Member for Calare: I won a talent show on the radio for singing Blue Eyes by Elton John. I think the prize I won was for the worst act but I beat my brother. I won a denim sleeveless jacket with the band Police symbol on the back as well as their latest album.

Harry Lance, Prime7: I won Chifley King back in uni at 80’s prom as well as best dressed for my pink jeans and ¾ sleeve shirt.

Andrew Gee along with Kevin Walker congratulating the Women's Bowls on receiving funding for the new irrigation system for the greens.

Canowindra Bowling Club Switches On New Irrigation

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee visited the Canowindra Bowling Club for the official turning on of the new irrigation system for the greens. After pausing a game of women’s bowls the ladies all stood with Andrew Gee patiently awaiting the official opening of the sprinklers. After everybody was slightly refreshed the bowlers were back to business as usual. The new sprinkler systems installed at the Bowling Club was made possible through a $12,200 grant from the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. The Stronger Communities Programme funded small capital projects, which will deliver social benefits by supporting community participation and contributing to the vibrancy and viability of communities. Mr Gee said, “The Canowindra Bowling Club is a central part of the local community, providing a place for locals to come together and enjoy its sporting facilities.”

The new sprinkler system is a great asset to the Canowindra Bowling Club and it “will hopefully draw more bowlers to come get involved now that they have a higher quality green,” Mr Gee said. The sprinkler system is set up to maximize water use and to minimise water wastage. Councilor Kevin Walker explained, “there are eight irrigation stations placed around the green and they turn on automatically at 2am which minimises evaporation”. President of the Canowindra Women’s Bowls Betty Jenkins said, “The new sprinkler system has improved the quality of the greens allowing bowlers to improve on their skills more. It has made it a more reliable green and it will allow us to compete with other towns with the same standards.” Bowling has already started to pick up with Friday night barefoot bowls filling up the greens creating a great atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Biz-E Is Now Central West Uniforms

Owner of Biz-E Tony has now combined forces with her daughter Kristen McVey to form Central West Uniforms. Central West Uniforms will continue to provide all the same services as previously but adding school wear. The website displays their current range and as the seasons change and more schools come on board the range will increase. Toni and Kristen hope to eventually provide school wear and other services to all the schools in the local region. Central West Uniforms also offer embroidery, screen printing, signage applications, novelty T-shirts, pillow cases as well as sashes for horse racing and shows. They have been screen printing the shearing singlet’s and shirts for the Canowindra Show and have also updated the Women’s Bowling Club Honour Board for many years. Central West Uniforms are trading from the Biz-E home workshop but have established an online presence giving customers the convenience of buying school wear and other uniforms from work, team sports, hospitality and the health and beauty industry.

Canowindra’s Second “Artful Eight” Exhibition – More Artists and New Creativity On Show Canowindra Arts Inc presents its second “Artful Eight” art show and sale in the Old IGA premises in Gaskill Street over the next week with a problem that most groups would love to face. The show’s title has had to be changed to “Artful Eight Plus” because this year no less than 13 artists have signed up to show their works, and the exhibition’s reach has widened to include entries from Dubbo, Mullion Creek and Blayney, aside from Canowindra, Cowra and Carcoar. Also, the creative scope has broadened, with the prominent Cowra art ceramicist Greg Daly and Chris Watson’s stunning aerial Farmpix photography joining the painters. Canowindra Arts chair, Arthur Falconer, hails this year’s response as a crucial step toward the group’s plan to develop Canowindra as a regional arts hub and a key player in the NSW government’s Art Tourism scheme for regional rural towns.

“It’s astonishing just how many artists there are out there in our region, many of them working quietly and virtually unnoticed in the towns and hamlets,” he says. “Canowindra Arts Inc is bringing them out and bringing them together, and providing them with exhibition services that will help them sell their works. “In turn, they are seen as the creative bedrock of our plan to establish a permanent arts centre in Canowindra that will promote and teach all genres of artistic endeavour to the rest of the community.” “Artful Eight Plus” opens Friday March 3, and will run to Saturday March 10. Friday will also be the official opening day, with a special ceremony, with nibbles and drinks, at 5pm in the afternoon. The show will also stay open late through Saturday evening to offer a highly creative sideshow to Canowindra’s spectacular 100 Mile Dinner.

The “Artful Eight” Are Back WITH FIVE MORE ARTISTS! They wowed Canowindra with their art last October, and now the new “Artful Eight Plus” Exhibition, to be staged from March 3 to 10 in the Old IGA Store, Gaskill Street, will feature 13 highly talented regional artists, with a ceramicist and a photographer joining the show. Official opening ceremony 5pm Friday March 3 and the exhibition will remain open during the 100-Mile Dinner on Saturday evening.

The NRI had a modest 3 cent rise this week to close at 1521 cents. The market was again led by the finer microns with 18.0 micron and finer gaining a further 10-30 cents. 18.5 to 19.5 micron were fully firm whilst a large selection of 20.0 micron and coarser eased slightly to finish the week 10 to 20 cents lower. Again buyers continue to favour the high nkt low cvh lots which continue to attract healthy premiums. The skirting market struggled this week to maintain previous levels, generally falling 10 to 20 cents. However the oddment sector had a very solid week with all three carding indicators rising on average by 11 cents. The crossbred sector also continued its move back into positive territory with rises of between 10-20 cents with 28.0 micron most affected. Buyers continue to favour the better prepared lines, with properly skirted wools enjoying the largest price gains. Drizzling honey into your morning tea or onto your toast in the morning may be no longer if the bee population continues to suffer. A new study done by the University of Western Australia into the honey bee has revealed that humans have a significant impact on a bee’s metabolism and ultimately its survival. Land that has been degraded means a reduction in the availability of resources for bees therefore putting more strain on the bees body to survive and impacting its ability to function as it should. The research conducted by the University of Western Australia has outlined the importance of understanding how environmental factors impact bees and how to help preserve their population. This is the first time the metabolic rate and feeding rate of a free-flying insect has been measured in its natural environment and this university research paves the way for future research on pollinators other than bees. "Bees are vital for human beings, the environment and agriculture," Professor Bradshaw said. Bees produce a third of what we eat and pollinate one sixth of flowering plants worldwide. There has been a dramatic decline over the past few years on the population of the bees hence emphasising the importance for further research and improvement of environmental practices."

When Should I See A Financial Planner?

When I win lotto. When I am fifty and have money I don’t know what to do with. Old people see financial planners. Is this what you think? You would be wrong! You need a financial plan to get from a weak financial position to a strong one. It’s the road map that enables you to make the journey most efficiently. It takes major long term goals, that may appear impossible to achieve, and breaks them down into many small steps that are achievable. Would you rather make a life … or just a living? Would you rather live with abundance … or stay trapped in financial fear and worry? Would you like to have a clearly marked road-map for your future … or feel like you are going no-where? You need to start young! If you are aged from 25 to 35 or even 45, and you don’t have a financial plan, you need to get one! It’s your choice. It’s your life. But eventually, you will turn 65. Tommy Jeffs centre stage at the Condobolin Picnic Races after winning Best Dressed Gentlemen.

Fashions On The Field

Tommy Jeffs has taken out not one, but two titles for Fashion on the Fields over the weekend. On Saturday Tommy attended the Condobolin Picnic Races and came away with Best Dressed Gentlemen. Tommy’s outfit was a pale blue jacket from Industrie and the rest of his outfit was from Ralph Lauren. The event attracted some of the most stylish race goers and Tommy was proud to hold the title. Judges were looking for somebody dressed with a bit of flair and Tommy certainly delivered that. “I’m doing all of the stuff I wanted to do when I was in my 40’s!” Tommy said. Tommy then headed off to the Dubbo races on Sunday dressed in a navy Hugo suit dressed to the nines again. Judging time came around and of course Tommy won the title of Best Dressed Gentlemen for Dubbo. Tommy was ecstatic with the win and said, “the judges made the comment that they must dress really well in Canowindra after winning both best dressed”.

Tommy loves the atmosphere at the races and says, “my family was involved with the horse racing for years and I’ve always loved going. I was always just too busy working in my younger years so as of last weekend I will be going to a lot more of them.”

Dr Sarah McDough is the first speaker and her expertise is with early reading and prevention of reading difficulties. Sarah is a lecturer in Inclusive Education at Charles Sturt University and has vast educational experience as a teacher, researcher and consultant. How long have you lived in Canowindra and what brought you here? I moved here almost 4 years ago to work in a vineyard. Where do you work and what do you like about your work? Canowindra High School as a Science and Agriculture teacher. I love seeing my students be such great members of the community in and out of school. What do you do to unwind after work or on the weekends? I love to garden and hang out with my dog Fred. What are you really good at? Being efficient. If you could have a super power what would it be? To teleport so that I could visit my baby nephew and niece more. What is your pet hate? People not treating other people how they would like to be treated. Tell us about your best holiday. New Zealand. I lived there for around a year and in between working vintages I got to back pack and hike around a lot of the country. But it’s hard to say as I then moved to America for 6 months to work and travel, and then to Tasmania to do the same…

Autumn is not far away- my favourite season in the inland slopes and tablelands regions. The weather is (usually!) the best all year and beautiful, contrasting, colourful foliage begins to come through in our gardens. Some years the bright red autumn foliage of trees such as claret ash, Chinese pistachio and Japanese maples really catch my eye. In other years the golden/yellow foliage of golden ash, ginkgo and golden elm trees are really striking. Some other deciduous trees that provide wonderful autumn colour across our region are the lipstick maples (autumn blaze and October glory) that are a bit hardier than the Japanese maples, ornamental pears and Nyssa sylvatica (tupelo). Autumn flowers are a bit hard to find in the garden, but Camellia sasanquas are a hardy flowering shrub that can be used as specimens or hedges and which will be budding up soon to burst forth with colour in autumn and early winter. Some of the good old native grevillia shrubs will also carry flowers that attract birds into the garden throughout the year. Salvias (hotlips and santa Barbara) and succulent sedum (Autumn Joy is my favourite) are perennials that can be relied upon to have colourful flowers into autumn. Bulbs such as Autumn crocus and Belladonna lily are great to tuck into corners in the garden for autumn flowers too. Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

YOUR Wealth Matters Get On Top Of Your Finances In 5 Easy Steps Here are 5 easy ways to start taking control of your financial situation… remember, money is just a servant, you are the master! Step 1: Review your financial situation The only person responsible for your financial situation is you. Work out where your finances are right now. Write down what assets and debts you have, take away your debts from your assets and see how you’re travelling. Step 2. Take control of your debt If you have debt, it’s important to ensure you’re getting a good deal on your interest rate, possibly look at consolidating loans to reduce interest, and pay well above the minimum repayments so that the debt is paid off ASAP. GOLDEN RULE: Pay off credit card debt every month. Step 3. Build an emergency fund. It’s hard to get ahead financially if you’re not saving anything. Start saving some money from every pay cheque and build up an emergency savings account. Step 4: Be your own super hero Most people don’t understand superannuation because no one has explained it to them. Super is simply a way to save money for your retirement and pay less tax on the money. You have enormous control over it and once you understand the power of super, you’ll pay attention from that moment forward. Step 5: Invest in financial education Hopefully the ideas in this article are starting to give you a heads-up that managing money isn’t really that hard once you learn how. Spend a day at a Wealth Train workshop and let us share 15 years of experience with you to give you all the tools you need! Cheers, Daniel
