John Lawrence and Peter Watt presenting Mandy Townsend from Pythonetties with a cheque from the Community Chest Program.
IGA Community Chest
Canowindra IGA continues to give back to the community through their Community Chest Program, raising $7,308.20 for community organisations. This years beneficiaries were Pythonetties, Canowindra Public School Breakfast Club, Canowindra Public School P&C and Canowindra Pony Club. All were overwhelmed with the support received from IGA and the community. Mandy Townsend from Pythonetties said, “ The money will go towards training equipment and uniforms. We are just blown away with the support from everyone. It’s just amazing”. Belinda Neville from Canowindra Public School P&C was also ecstatic and said, “The money has gone towards the new play equipment that was put up over the holidays.”

A new initiative implemented at Canowindra Public School, The Breakfast Club, were overwhelmed with the support. Lorraine said, “This will be a great help in keeping the program running by buying food as it is not funded”. Bec Brown from Canowindra Pony Club was so grateful and said, “It will go towards new equipment, more functions and events to be held throughout the year. It is really fantastic, we can’t thank them enough”. John Lawrence was pleased to hear that they could make such a difference through the Community Chest Program, where people have either bought community chest products or specials throughout the year. “All of them are worthy recipients. It is good to see the money going back into the community through school and sporting activities,” John Lawrence said.

FROM THE Publisher's Desk I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the advertisers of the Canowindra Phoenix, and the loyal readers and contributors for their support since our first edition on 21st November, 2013. It is with great pleasure that I announce that Sarah Maynard has taken over the role of Publisher of the Phoenix Group of Newspapers, including the Canowindra Phoenix effective from the lst March. She will also be the Publisher of the Forbes and Parkes Phoenix newspapers. The journey has certainly been challenging, particularly in these times of change and we are proud that we are the only newspaper group in the Central West of NSW that delivers to road mail boxes, and in Canowindra the only paper that delivers to homes. each week it is no mean feat that we continue to do this, at the same time supporting local businesses, causes and charities and contributing to the community in so many ways. I am about to start the next stage of my life and transition into retirement. For those of you who know me, you will also know that this will be a somewhat slower pace and one that I will need to adjust to. I know that you will afford Sarah the same level of support you have shown me, and with the remainder of the team staying in place, the Canowindra Phoenix will continue to play a vital role in the community. Good luck to Sarah and her team. All the best from Cheryl Newsom

FAREWELL Messages To Cheryl Newsom...
L- R: Sarah Maynard, Casey Evans, Liz Mitchell, Tommy Jeffs, Cheryl Newsom, Rhi Quinn and Roselea Buttigieg
WOW What A WOMAN!
After a successful media career in the “Big Smoke” Cheryl Newsom decided to take a tree change and move to the lovely, sleepy town of Canowindra to be closer to her family. A country girl at heart as they say “you can take the girl out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the girl”. Continuing with her media consultancy “Inxcess” for a few years she decided she had had enough of the travelling and wanted to do something locally. When the Canowindra Phoenix came up for sale in 2013 she jumped at the chance! With a long list of newspaper clients in the past she finally had her very own Newspaper “The Canowindra Phoenix” which was re-launched in November 2013 to the delight of the locals! What was once a small 4 page paper is now a 12 page weekly publication full of local stories, advertising and editorials. Her favourite motto is Live Local, Love Local, Shop Local and likes to support those businesses in the community who have over the past 4 years supported her! With so much local support and momentum with the re-launched Canowindra Phoenix, Chez as she is known around town and to her staff couldn’t stop there, she launched the Forbes Phoenix on 3rd July 2015. Backed by the Forbes Shire Council and Mayor at the time and good friend Phyl-
lis Miller the Forbes Phoenix gave the town a new weekly read that they have come to love! The drive and determination shown by Chez meant that in March 2016 she launched two more publications the Parkes Phoenix and Hilltops Phoenix. There was no stopping her - she was a woman on a mission! She is often heard saying “Watch out Fairfax we are hot on your tail”. Chez is a sales guru at heart and chasing people up is her real passion! Chez was also instrumental in launching the Canowindra Tourism Booklet, Blayney Tourism Booklet, Calendar and Rainfall Charts for all four publications. So what is she going to do now that she has finally retired after working her whole life? That is a big question I don’t think anyone would be able to answer! We certainly know that you won’t really be “retired” and that you already have a lot of new “jobs” in the pipeline! Sarah Maynard, Chez’s daughter said “I hope that she does take some time out to travel and enjoy life a bit more and maybe even look after her cute little grandkids a bit more!”. We wish you all the best for your retirement, just chill out and enjoy yourself!
Graham Rice: We wish you all the best for retirement and thank you for all of the promoting and advancing you have done for Canowindra.
Heather Slattery: Good luck and happy travelling.
Alison and Graham Beasley: We wish you all the best and will miss her coming in on a Thursday night for a drink with other local business owners.

St Raphael’s Catholic School “Great Learning, Great Communities” This year celebrates the theme “Great Learning, Great Communities”. This is a very fitting theme for 2017 as we celebrate Catholic education in Cowra and surrounds. Since the beginning, St Raphael’s Catholic School has been welcomed and supported within the Cowra community. St Raphael’s values the long standing relationships and partnerships that have developed with St Raphael’s Parish, the wider community and families over generations while providing a rich Catholic education for the youth of Cowra and surrounds. 2017 marks a significant year for the students, parents and staff of St Raphael’s Catholic School. For the first time the school can offer education beyond Year 10. Students can now begin their education in Kindergarten and graduate Year 12. Students selecte a course of study from a very broad range of subjects on offer. St Raphael’s offers students the opportunity to complete VET qualification in hospitality and construction. They are pleased to have a range of subjects and have accommodated student selections with small class sizes and the recruitment of new staff. The school has undergone significant redevelopment and boasts state of the art facilities including science laboratories, construction, hospitality, art room, TAS classroom, general purpose classrooms and change room facilities. These facilities will be used by the whole secondary department and can be accessed by primary

classes. Primary classes have access to purpose built learning spaces and can take advantage of such great facilities. Students have already had many different learning opportunities and look forward to the upcoming year where we have all secondary grades. Year 7 students participated in a rafting trip and a range of activities that has assisted in orientating them to secondary school life. Students are showing maturity

as they experience the changes of school life with timetables, multiple teachers and assessment tasks. In 2016 Learning Plus was launched in the secondary school. Health Smart Kinesiology Holistic Health Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys! I love this saying. This has come across my path twice in the last week and each time it has resonated very strongly with me. I don’t now about you, but sometimes my life seems like a circus, with stuff going on all over the place. There are so many performances, all running at the same time and as the ring leader, you have to know where all your monkeys are and what they are doing. We lead very busy lives. We are moving faster than we ever have in history. We are more connected than ever before yet we are also more disconnected than ever before. AND the scary part is, it’s just going to get faster. This is where the monkeys come in – your priorities - and the ring leader – You. Where are you leaking energy in your daily life, where are you spending time, money, physical energy that is not about your monkeys or maybe that your monkeys don’t actually need. The speed at which things move, keeps us caught in the slipstream and its hard to see what it is we need to nourish us and our monkeys because we are moving so fast. Two weeks ago, I ran two meditation “how-to” sessions in Cowra. Meditation helps us to pause. When we pause we can see what’s really going on, we can see the monkeys and the whole circus for what it really is – then we can make choices that nourish us and our monkeys. Let me help you to pause. Join my meditation experiment. Go to perfecthealthcentre.com.au and click on “join meditation experiment” and we’ll sort those monkeys out!
Kinesiology is a form of holistic health that works with the movement of your energy. It is conducted by monitoring ones muscle to access information about a person’s well being. Kinesiology originated in the 1970’s and is a combination of Western techniques and Eastern wisdom to promote physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Kinesiology practitioners undertake years of training to be able to access the movement of energy around your body. When energy is blocked or stressed it can prevent smooth energetic transmission affecting physical pain, mental discomfort, disease, allergies, depression, postural problems, learning difficulties, nervous and digestive disorders. People also use kinesiology for stress, confusion, depression, fatigue, tiredness, back problems, respiratory issues, food sensitivity, sports injuries, personal development and general wellbeing. Kinesiology looks beyond these symptoms, as it could be nutritional, emotional, structural, electrical or even spiritual issues that are causing an imbalance in your body causing these symptoms to happen. Australians spend over $1 billion annually on therapies not part of mainstream medicine. Kinesiology is one of the fastest growing of these and is now practiced in over 100 countries. Australia has a growing number of professional practitioners registered with the Australian Kinesiology Association.
Through this healing process some may experience profound improvements and most have an overall improvement on their health and wellbeing. Muscle monitoring involves challenging the bio-feedback mechanism present in all muscles to reveal imbalances within the body. The findings from this may be present as physical pain, mental discomfort and the many expressions of disease. Muscle monitoring gives instant access to holistic information held by the core operating unit of the entire body mind system and the subconscious. This normally inaccessible neural substrate holds all our memories, information about physical, emotional, mental and energetic states, and also determines our muscle tension. Accessing the bio-system, allows the Kinesiologist to quickly determine the specific strategy to best reinstate to the body’s balance. Some techniques kinesiology may use: • acupressure • lymphatic massage • hypertonic muscle release • attention to reflex, trigger and body points • remedies, such as flower essences and homeopathics • nutritional advice. For more information go onto the Australian Kinesiology website, phone them on 1300 780 381 or consult your doctor.

Understanding Strata Property Part 1 What is a strata titled apartment? As the laws that govern such properties changed in 2016 I thought it would be interesting over the next two articles to discuss strata title and the legal changes made. Strata is a form of property ownership invented in NSW just over 50 years ago which has been copied around the world. Strata title allows an individual to own part of a building usually an apartment whilst sharing with the other apartment owners the remaining common property e.g. foyer or gardens through a legal entity called the Owners Corporation. Strata properties can include residential, commercial, retail, retirement villages, and caravan parks. In Western Australia there is even a strata titled vineyard. Australia's tallest building the Q1 on the Gold Coast is a large strata titled building consisting of 526 apartments, shops, plus common property including pools, a day spa, meeting and conference facilities and dining areas. Strata schemes in Australia now involve more than two million individual properties accounting for more than half of all residential sales and leases with investors in Sydney. Why was this concept invented? Banks; they didn't not like loaning money to purchase an apartment as the owner was required to purchase shares in a company that owned the building which failed to give separate ownership of the apartment to the purchaser. Less security for the banks who held the mortgage was the reason. Next month I will discuss some of the changes to the law that govern strata property. Until then if you have any legal queries about this or any other matter contact Geoff Yeo of Peacockes Solicitors.

Ronald Lawrence How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I’ve lived in Canowindra my whole life. I love the easy going country lifestyle. Where do you work and what do you like about your work? I work in Cowra at JnD Cabinet and Joinery doing the installation of kitchens. I enjoy doing the installs because I get to see the customer’s reaction when they walk in and see the finished product. What do you do to unwind after work? I like to unwind from work by spending my weekends outside doing different activities such as fishing and playing rugby league. What are you really good at? I think I’m pretty good at my job as I have been doing it for 8 years now and I am good at having fun with my friends If you could have a super power, what would it be? My super power would be able to fly. Tell us about your best holiday. My best holiday would be when myself and Kaila spent a week at Batemans Bay staying at a place overlooking the water.
Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Darren Chester visited Calare last week to drive the whole length of the Bells Line of Road and to see firsthand the improvements which are being made by the NSW Government. But, there is more to be done and what I’m interested in in the shorter term is getting some funding to keep those improvements going. In the longer term, the communities of the west really want the Bells Line Expressway. The only reason we have seen improvements on Bells Line in the last few years is because communities of the west and local representatives have been fighting very hard for it. We’re certainly united in the fight and I’m keen to keep this good work going. The first step in seeing the Bells Line progress is to get the key decision makers out to actually see it. Otherwise, it’s just a line on a bureaucrat’s map. I can’t remember another Federal Minister taking such an interest in this key project. I’ll keep the community posted on developments. The Canowindra Bowling Club has officially turned on its new irrigation system, which was made possible by a $12,200 Australian Government grant. The quality of the bowling green has significantly improved since the new system was installed, and the Club is now hoping it can attract more bowls tournaments in the future. Thanks must also go to members of the women's club who gave me a few pointers on my bowling technique. Work continues to progress on the long awaited overtaking lanes and upgrades to the Cargo Road near Orange. The Federal Government recently announced $395,500 for the lanes, on top of the $2 million committed by the NSW Government back in 2015. With one section of the upgrades already complete, drivers should start to see an improvement. This stretch of road is a key freight link for livestock and hay carriers, and plays a crucial role in connecting towns in Cabonne, like Canowindra and Cargo, to Orange. ADVERTISEMENT
