Meg Austin one of three finalists to represent Zone 6 Showgirl with Lynn Russell and Tracy Lamb.

Canowindra Showgirl To Compete At Sydney Royal Easter Show Meg Austin, Canowindra Showgirl, is set to represent Canowindra and rural NSW as she heads to the Sydney Royal Easter Show after being named one of the finalists for Zone 6 Showgirl. “Winning at Zone finals on Saturday was one of the most exhilarating feelings! I think it's still sinking in, and sometimes I still pinch myself that this is really happening! I am really excited mostly, and looking for-

ward to what the next month holds,” Meg Austin said. The Showgirl Competition aims to find a young woman ambassador for rural NSW to promote not only the agriculture sector but to also show awareness of rural women’s contribution and involvement in the bush and their local communities.

The Showgirl Competition is judged on showing a genuine interest and knowledge of rural NSW. Meg demonstrates this perfectly “Canowindra is my hometown and my entire life, which I’d love to share with others. In attending the Royal Easter Show not only am I representing Canowindra, but also the whole Central West and rural NSW. People need to know what we have to offer, and I'm looking forward to sharing my pure passion for the rural landscape, sense of community and opportunities rural NSW has to offer”. Meg is looking forward to attending the Sydney Royal Easter show on Thursday 6th April to Wednesday 19th April and has some big ideas ahead. “It’s just around the corner and there is lots to be done between now and then. Although I am in the very early stages of preparation I've decided to address young people within rural communities - for they are the foundations of the town. As a youth who attended a small public school I strongly support public, equitable education, and would like to look at techniques to further attract youth to rural communities through readily available, agricultural edu-

cation. This idea is just embryo size at the moment, however I'm excited by the prospect of making change in an area that I was recently a student of.” Meg Austin is only the ripe age of 18 but that certainly isn’t holding her back. “People often comment on my age. However I don't see this as a disadvantage. I have earned my place in the competition and I am going to give it my best shot! I have this amazing opportunity to voice my opinion, especially with the focus on youth, which I can really relate to. I think it's wonderful someone my age can bring forward these ideas.” Meg has admirable characteristics for her age and shows maturity and drive beyond her years. Although this is a competition Meg is too modest for that, “In no way I think of this as a competition. We are all there because we have a shared passion and drive, and thus need to support and learn from each other and from each others experiences.” Meg would like to make a personal thanks to the community for their ongoing support for, “Canowindra is my home town, and I strive to do you all proud.”

An Immersive Virtual Reality Experience

Gaskill Street lined with tables and lit up with a beautiful sunset and lanterns at the 100 mile dinner.

Local Wine, Local Produce, Local Spirit

The 100 mile dinner celebrated another successful year of bringing local produce to the plate. Tables lined the main street with lanterns lighting them up. Gaskill Street was a buzz with people enjoying live music, local food and wine. The evening was organised by canowindra@home a not-for-profit community group made up of local wine and food producers, chefs, cooks and interested locals. President of the organisation Helen Tiney on the night said, “We are very happy to be back on Gaskill Street sharing food and wine, local to the area within 100 miles.” The concept of the event is to focus on the produce in this area within 100 miles of Canowindra. Thankfully Canowindra and the surrounding areas have an abundance of quality produce and the event is all about showcasing that and the town. This year canowindra@home partnered with Kim Currie The Owner and Chef at Zin House in Mudgee who prepared and pre-

sented the meals on the night. Kim Currie is the original founder of Taste Orange and carries the focus of showcasing local produce with her. Kim Currie has spent the last thirty years immersed in regional food, cooking it, marketing it, supporting and living amongst it. Her favorite quote is passed down from her gardener Grandfather "You may walk to the garden but you must run back to the kitchen." Kim believes that the best cooks are those who also garden. Helen Tiney said, “We are very proud to bring you this evening.” As well as the main street flowing with food and people so did the balconies in town. Both the Old Vic Inn and the Royal Hotel held successful nights also bringing the concept of local produce to the floor, or above in this case. Canowindra certainly showed off what it has to offer in what was a spectacular night.

Autumn is the month of Orange with not only the leaves turning into bursts of colour but also the town of Orange coming alive. Orange Food Week is one of the main reasons to get excited as it is fast approaching. The renowned festival showcases some of the best produce and wine in this region and does so perfectly. Autumn fruits are ready for picking with apples, pears, table grapes, figs and plums all coming in abundance; it’s hard not to want to showcase them. This time of the year also see’s some favourite nuts being ready for the takings being hazelnuts and chestnuts, also both great to incorporate into any dish. Orange F.O.O.D Week is one of the longest running regional food events and has been acclaimed as one of Australia’s top ten food festivals. The event is held in Orange and surrounding areas which was recently named one of the states premium events by Destination NSW. The event was originally founded in 1991 by a group of local foodies with the concept of showcasing the region’s excellent fresh produce and award-winning cool climate wine. This soon became a platform for local producers, chefs and caterers. A voluntary committee runs the organisation with support from the local tourism marketing office of Brand Orange. Over the course of the festival the event hosts over 80 events to appeal to everyone’s different tastes and styles. Local res-

taurants, cafes and wineries will all be participating in the event so they will be sure to delight your taste buds. This year Orange Food Week have positioned themselves as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible with biodegradable food vessels, sustainably produced paper for all printed festival material (including a commitment to use mostly digital communication for festival programme items) and carrying out an Environmental Audit of this year’s event to use as a blueprint for future events. This initiative comes as the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development being a main initiative for this year. Signature events for the week include: • Food HQ open daily from 1st-9th April, except for Saturday. Located in the ground of the Agrestic Grocer under the marquee. Ask volunteers for information or come along to meet the producers, taste some of their specialties and maybe even buy some of their produce. • FOOD Week Night Market Friday 31st March at Robertson Park, come enjoy some local wine, food and live music. • FOOD Train Friday 7th April departing central station in Sydney be whisked away on a train to explore the food of the district. How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I've lived here just over a year and it is such a pretty and friendly town but so small that everyone knew who I was long before I could learn their names!! Where do you work and what do you like about your work? I'm a newly registered pharmacist with the local 'farmacy chicks' and I just love learning about new medicine and therapies so I can assist people in leading happy and healthier lives. What do you to do unwind after work or on the weekend? I’m totally addicted to netflix at the moment but also love popping down to have a sneaky drink (or two) with the girls. What are you really good at? I'm really good at talking.....ask anyone!!! If you could have a super power what would it be? Flying, it would be such a great way to travel. What is your pet hate? Laziness, but on Sundays I am probably the most lazy. Tell us about your best holiday? Best holiday would have to be any of my overseas adventures; Contiki in Europe or west to east coast in the USA where we had a helicopter ride and breakfast at the bottom of the Grand Canyon followed by thunder down under in Vegas!

When a tenant vacates a property at the end of their tenancy, we complete an outgoing or final inspection of the property. We then compare this to the ingoing inspection condition report completed prior to the commencement of their tenancy. Legislation states that the tenant must leave the property in the same condition as it was at the commencement of the tenancy, taking into consideration fair wear and tear which is described as something that happens during normal use or changes that happen with aging. When determining fair wear & tear the small claims tribunal will take into consideration the following: • The number of tenants residing at the property; • The term of the tenancy; and • The age of the fixtures & fittings. For example: There is going to be a greater allowance for “fair wear and tear” if you have a property with a family of four children, who resided in the property for five years and no improvements/replacements were carried out with carpets, curtains & painting of walls etc - compared to a single couple who resided in the property for 6 months where the carpet, curtains and walls were painted in the last 12 months. Areas that may be considered fair wear and tear. • Insects in light fittings • Tracking marks on carpets • Marks on walls • Dusty window tracks • Scuff marks on lino Just to name a few. Once again, the above areas will depend on the circumstances of the tenancy. Ray White Real Estate Cowra Property Management team take pride in maintaining & offering clean well-maintained properties to live in. We will continue to adopt the policy of “We Make People Happy”. The Newcrest Orange Bike Challenge saw 1300 cyclists roll into town. Canowindra was apart of the 170km route, which started in Orange, then Cargo, Canowindra and finishing up in Mandurama. The bike challenge was certainly a challenge as riders fought with the uneven roads, potholes, debris, never ending hills, elevation of 2 200m, fog and even some wildlife encounters. With no shortcuts riders pulled into designated pit stops along the way. The Canowindra Showground hosted one of those stops providing drinks, food and fresh
