Canowindra Celebrates International Women's Day

An evening of inspiration, motivation and celebration would be how to best describe this year’s International Women’s Day. Over 60 people attended the event that was held on the balcony of the Old Vic Inn with drinks, live music and canapés throughout the night. The evening was hosted by the Canowindra Phoenix and raised over $700 for the charity Pay It Forward. Pay it Forward is an Orange based charity and offers free access to pantry goods, fresh bread, white goods and furniture to community members in times of crisis. Founding director of Pay it Forward and Orange’s Local Women of the Year Karlie Irwin, was this year’s guest speaker who spoke about her experience and how your background certainly doesn’t determine who you are.

“I didn’t always have the support I needed, I was homeless and living on the street at 14 and I have never returned to that house,” Karlie said. Karlie Irwin was an inspiration to all as she spoke about how she started Pay it Forward from her own garage and has now expanded to a community shed located at 83 Glenroi Avenue, Orange. Karlie has an extensive background in community service and saw a gap in helping those in need. “It’s changing the way we support people in our communities and people can access the charity at no financial cost,” Karlie said. If you or someone you know need help you can find Pay it Forward on Facebook or go to their website www.payitforwardcomshedorange.com

League Tag Carnival Simply Spectacular! Canowindra hosted a spectacular League Tag carnival on Saturday with teams coming from all over the district. Bathurst St Pats came away with the win claiming back to back Western Challenge titles. In a hard fought final they overcame Orange Hawks 10-0. Sarah Watterson from St Pats was the player of the tournament. Earlier in the day Blayney looked to have booked themselves a spot in the final when Olivia Bird kicked a field goal to lead 1 nil before the Hawkes got one over the line to win 4-1. St Pats defeated Parkes in the other semi final 6-0. For the Woodbridge Cup sides Manildra were only a whisker away from making the finals with 3 wins. The New Era cup sides put on a good show claiming 4 wins between them. Dubbo Macquarie were easily the most improved team. Orange Cyms probably the unluckiest team missing out on a semi final spot on a for and against count back after finishing their pool equal with Parkes. Canowindra Tigeresses played well all

day and continued to improve each game. A big thank you to the Woodbridge Cup Referees association for their time and commitment in officiating on the day. A very professional job with lots of positive feedback from everyone. Andrew Pull one of the organisers for the event said, “Congratulations to all teams on their skill, competitiveness and great sportsmanship. I hope you have great seasons in your competitions!”

Mackenzie Lazarou, Danielle Brown, Jeleaha Cutmore, Melissa Frazer, Alex Traves, Brittany Whatman all enjoying a rest after finishing one of the League Tag games they played on Saturday.

Cowra Comes Alive With Belarus Festival

Cowra welcomes the Republic of Belarus as guest nation for this year’s Festival of International Understanding. A land-locked country located in Eastern Europe, Belarus has a rich cultural heritage, unique architecture and extraordinary landscapes. The Festival celebrates friendship, diversity and understanding and provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the people and culture of Belarus to the Cowra community. An absolute highlight this year will be the attendance of ROVESNIK, a dance group of twenty dancers that will travel all the way from Belarus, to attend and perform at the Festival. Now in its 53rd year, the Festival will be a jam-packed 10 days of fun activities for the whole community. On Sunday 26 March there is a performance by ROVESNIK to be held at the CIVIC Centre at 10.30am (cost – gold coin). Following this there is the chance to attend a workshop by ROVESNIK for children and adults, to learn Belarusian Dancing ($15 per person). This will be a fantastic opportunity for our local communities and we encourage everyone to get involved. For more information and full program details, follow the Cowra Festival of International Understanding on facebook or email festival@cowra.nsw.gov.au.

Original Moorbel Post Office Sign Donated To Historical Society The Canowindra Historical Society rejoiced on Tuesday with the kind donation of the original Moorbel Post Office sign. David and Christine Rice kindly donated the sign to the Historical Society after purchasing it 6 years ago from Deb Rutter. “It belongs back in its home town and that’s why we are giving it back today,” David said. The sign is made of enamel and has been kept very well and will continue to do so as the Historical Society will work to preserve and appropriately display this new item. Ross Cleary member of the Historical Society said, “on behalf of the committee we genuinely thank you, it’s fantastic when heritage of the town is brought back to us.” Gwen Landon was one of the special guests when receiving the sign as she was originally the

The Moorbel Post Office sign comes days before the new release of the “History and Character of Belmore/ Moorbel book launch on this Saturday 25th March. The launch will be taking place at 10am at the Moorbel Hall. The book is nearly 100 pages long and covers a lot of local history and photos.

Up, Up And Away For Canowindra Arts “Sky High” Exhibition In April Canowindra Arts Inc, formed to help establish our town as a regional cultural hub, is moving ahead on preparations for its third major art exhibition in April. Setting a “Sky High” creative challenge for its artists, the exhibition will be officially opened on Good Friday, April 14 and run to April 26, coinciding with and supporting Canowindra’s spectacular annual Balloon Challenge and Balloon Glow. The new show has been designed to consolidate the success that the new arts body has had with its “Artful Eight” and "Artful Eight Plus” exhibitions which have drawn large crowds and high praise from local, regional and interstate art lovers. The "Artful Eight Plus” exhibition attracted more than 14 local and regional artists and expanded the entries to include works by the celebrated ceramicist Greg Daly and amazing images by the Farmpix aerial photographer Chris Watson. It also included graphic wartime sketches by the highly skilled 17-year-old artist Kaluum Lee Maple of Mullion Creek that are on show in a promotional miniexhibition in the AGL site’s front window as we approach the Anzac Day rememberance on Tuesday April 25. “Artful Eight Plus” drew a largely local crowd of visitors – a total of 60 guests for its official opening and more than 300 viewers during the week-long show, proving that Canowindra Arts is building a solid core of Canowindra and local regional Kaluum Lee Maple’s graphic sketch of the supporters for its future plans. How To Detox Your Home We can reduce our risk of chronic illness by limiting our exposure to toxic chemicals in our homes, which is where most of us spend the majority of our time. Here are your top 9 tips to improve the environment in your living space. 1. Take shoes off when inside. You can carry in metals, pesticides, dirt and other nasties in on your shoes. Go barefoot or wear slippers. 2. Keep the airflow circulating through your house by opening windows and doors as regularly as possible. Have indoor plants to help keep the air clean. Popular plants are; English Ivy, Gerbera Daisy, Peace Lily, Weeping fig, Bamboo plants and Chinese Evergreen. 3. Switch household cleaning products to cleaner and greener ones. You can make these at home using simple ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar, tea tree oil and vegetable based soaps. 4. Keep house dust to a minimum to help prevent allergens and less toxins staying inside. 5. Get a water filter as more than 700 chemicals have been identified in drinking water. Filtering tap water is better than drinking bottled water.

Blinds, Curtains, Awnings & Shutters

80 Redfern Street, Cowra

6. Ditch air fresheners and switch to having a bunch of flowers inside or pure beeswax candles as a way to freshen up the place. 7. Avoid excess moisture as it encourages the growth of mould and mildew. Regularly clean areas prone to mould such as around sinks and underneath them. 8. Clean with microfiber cloths as they grab the dirt and hold it instead of pushing it around. It also allows the surface to stay cleaner for longer. 9. Deep clean your mattress, as they can be the perfect environment for dust mites, moisture and allergens.

My House My Home What Makes Western Red Cedar Attractive For Your Timber Windows And Doors? Western Red Cedar is a popular and durable timber that is sought after due to its beauty and durability. It is a timber that remains stable under most weather conditions and is not prone to shrinking or swelling. This means it holds its shape and ensures longevity despite exposure to cold, heat, rain and other environmental factors. As a low-density timber that offers very good thermal insulation, it helps with heating and cooling efficiency, reducing electricity costs and making a home more environmentally friendly and sustainable. It's versatility enables it to be used for both internal and external applications. Western Red Cedar is visually beautiful with rich and inviting colours. It has a fine texture and straight grain with growth rings

often visible. The durable yet soft properties let the material take very well to being stained and polished. Furthermore Western Red Cedar’s natural preservatives provide resistance to fungus and insects. The wood is protected against termites, woodborers and fungus that can dramatically affect alternative timber options. Western Red Cedar is a stylish and practical material option with natural appeal, superior structural performance and elemental protection. For more information about Western Red Cedar, phone Glassplace on 6862 2346 or visit our showroom at 4 Clarke St Parkes and see our Western Red Cedar display.

MONTROSE House

Hello readers,

Welcome to this months column and into March already, the year is flying. I am back in Canowindra after an overseas wedding in Auckland, New Zealand, then onto Queenstown for a 21st. New Zealand is gorgeous! I've also been away to Queensland and Canberra for functions but am back now for a couple of months until May when I go off to New York and Washington for a month. There have been lots of parties and dinners at Montrose this month. Sandra Golding’s mum, Lorna’s 80th birthday, Betty Rush from Cowra's 80th birthday and a 30th birthday luncheon for Lilly Smith organised by her husband Andy from Moxey Farms Goologong with a royal purple theme which was wonderful. This weekend we have a house full of celebrities with the Duncan family reunion. Carmen and Paula were big Australian TV actors with Carmen being “Pat The Rat” on sons and daughters, so there are lots of Grants, Duncans etc. coming from all over Australia for a superb gourmet luncheon and catch up at Montrose. I am very proud to host them. On Sunday I have a group of ladies from Eugowra and Goologong celebrating a multi birthday party with a ‘pretty in pink’ theme. It should be wonderful, with these girls led by the veracious Amanda. There will be good fun and lots of laughs to be had. Monday 20th March will see the first of my Year 12 graduation class dinners for this wonderful bunch of young men and ladies. They will enjoy each others company while learning about good food, fine dining and setting an elegant table; all important life skills that will come in handy alongside their education for their very exciting futures. I have a christening next week, another dear friends 60th birthday and it looks like a very small classy wedding coming up, smart and private. There were lots of visitors last week for the 100 mile dinner and great fun for all my house guests. I hosted a black and white themed ‘Tuscany’ dinner on my front lawn for all my Sydney, Melbourne and Cowra visitors, which was amazing! Take care and best wishes. Tommy x

Canowindra St Edwards Primary School with the riders from the Royal Far West Ride for Country Kids as they have a stop before finishing their ride in Orange.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR COUNTRY KIDS

Ride for Country Kids, Royal Far West’s premier event rolled into town on Tuesday with 100 cyclists in toe. A quick stop off at the St Edwards Primary School saw cyclists have a quick break and catch up with some country kids. The ride started in Wagga Wagga on Sunday and finished on Tuesday in Orange making it a 420km ride. The ride is to raise funds to support a greater number of country kids with complex developmental and health needs. Lindsay Cane CEO of Royal Far West said, “we are very excited to ride into Canowindra and we just cracked the half a million mark!” St Edwards School welcomed the riders with excitement and cheers. “A very special welcome to you all, we greatly appreciate the work you do and for assisting children and their families. You are doing something really special for country kids. It is a huge effort and we congratulate you on making a difference to children's lives,” Principal Ken McNamara said.

Cyclists were soon back on the road to complete the final leg on the journey. “The ride has been all about country kids and we are hoping we can reach our target of $600 000. We have been hit by thunderstorms and the heat but it has been so much fun!” said Lindsay Cane CEO Royal Far West.

WOMEN’S BOWLS HAVE WIN AFTER WIN

On Tuesday the Canowindra Women’s Bowling Club hosted Parkes Railway Diggers in the number 3’s pennants. Canowindra had an overall win 49-26! With a win on both rinks giving Canowindra a 5-0 win on points. This puts Canowindra only 3 points behind Cowra who are leading on 9 points. The next game will be on Thursday 16th March against Cowra. Canowindra number 4’s pennants played Cowra at Cowra on Tuesday with an overall win 49-31. A win on both rinks gave them the lead. They will now have to play Cowra again on Thursday to give them the overall win for 4’s grade.
