Scott Welsh, Tracy Holmes, Gwen Campbell and Tina Earsman on Gwen Campbells last day working at Lawrence's IGA.

Gwen Farewells IGA

After 27 years of laughs and jokes Gwen Campbell has decided to retire from Lawrence’s IGA. Gwen worked her last day for IGA last Friday the 24th March as bubbly as usual. Gwen always greeted everyone with a kind smile and was always willing to help anyone. Gwen says, “I will miss all of my favourite customers, meeting all of the great people and getting to help everyone”. Being a favourite among customers Gwen will be missed and so will her jokes. After chatting to the team at IGA it was clear there were many stories to tell. Here are a few messages from the staff: “Thanks for the many years of service Gwen, the Main Street will be a lot quieter

without you.” “We will miss you, keep an eye out for those elephant stands!” “Be sure to enjoy as much smooth peanut butter and canapes as possible in your retirement.” “If anyone wants to have a yarn you will now have to visit Gwen at her house.” Gwen is a familiar face to many but has decided the time was right. “I will be spending some more time with my grand daughter and family while I am fit and healthy,” Gwen said. A message from the team at IGA, “Good luck and best wishes for this next chapter of your life. You have been a joy to work with and laugh with.”

ANG ELLIS Fitness

Get Active Canowindra

Students at Canowindra High School enjoying the performance put on by Iron and Clay a motivational band.

Motivational, Inspirational, Educational

Students rose out of their seats cheering, dancing and singing last Thursday as Iron and Clay performed at Canowindra High School, the energy in the hall was ecstatic! Iron and Clay are a motivational band who travel for 10 months of the year all across Australia, to not only entertain their audience but to inspire change and individuality, especially among the youth. The performance to Canowindra High School students addressed issues such as anxiety, low self esteem, drug and alcohol abuse and drink driving in an informative but entertaining way. “Speaking to the students in this type of medium is more engaging for them and gives them the skills to make the right choices,” said Deputy Principal Darryl Ball. Iron and Clay are a young group of performers who are motivated, full of energy and deliver a powerful message to their audience. “Destiny is not a matter of chance, it’s a matter of choice,” said Iron and Clay performers.

The interactive performance is presented for 30-60minutes, designed by young people, for young people. Iron and Clay demonstrate the importance of speaking to the youth of today in their own language and medium to get across the right message. A big theme for this year was placed on anxiety and how to cope with the stresses of everyday life. Iron and Clay were really all about inspiring students to do better regardless of their background. “Your choices are powerful. You have the power to choose greatness and live life to the fullest,” said Iron and Clay performers. This is the third year the group have visited Canowindra High School delivering new inspirational content each year. Canowindra High School have a lot of programs like this running throughout the year to better support the students and to give them the necessary skills to make the right decisions in life.

Holiday ROAD TRIP

Planning A Road TripPlan To Make It A Safe One

With the school holidays fast approaching and Easter not so far away too you might be planning a trip somewhere. Before you set off for the holiday period ensure you have a safe journey by getting your vehicle checked over. Planning on towing a caravan, boat or trailer, then ensure you meet the required towing regulations. Failure to abide by the towing regulations, including maximum loads, may result in a fine, or in the case of an accident, refusal of the insurance claim, and the possibility of further legal action. At Tuned Suspension in Parkes, an agent for Pedders Suspension, you can get a tow and load assessment for $75. This world first and comprehensive service is designed for those who tow or carry loads to better understand the effects of weight on their vehicle relevant to their individual driving scenarios. The end result of the assessment will provide your vehicle weight relevant to the likely driving scenarios that you will face. While you check over your vehicle why not take your car to a specialist at Canowindra Tyre Service to check over all of your tyres to keep you and your family safe.

With exceptional service it will make all the difference in keeping you on the road. Other tips suggested by Alison at Canowindra Tyre Service include: • Check tyre pressures before heading off on your holiday. • For safety you should replace tyres when you only have 2mm wear left. • Use a match head to check tread. If part of the head shows, it’s replacement time. • Or use our FREE tread depth card. Get a card when you get tyres. • Replace tyre caps to keep water and debris out of valves. • Don’t forget – check the spare too! With the cooler weather on the way, drop in for a free battery health check at Canowindra Tyre Service and be sure to get regular wheel balances to improve wet road handling. Rotate tyres when necessary as rotations allows maximum life out of your tyres. It is also a good idea to match treads to the same axle. Mismatching tyres causes handling issues. With all of this in mind stay safe on the road this holiday season!

Tallulah Out Of Retirement

Danielle Kinsela, Kelly Hughes Manager at Orange Ronald McDonald House and Abbey Stevens at the CWA hall giving a presentation.

CWA Guest Speaker

Last Thursday night at the CWA meeting members were inspired by a presentation that was put on by Kelly Hughes, Manager of Ronald McDonald House Orange. Ronald McDonald House in Orange provides accommodation to families who have a sick or injured child at the Orange Health Service. They provide 8 family units that sleep up to 6 people and are all located within a 3-minute walk to the hospital. Ronald McDonald House in Orange has been running since the 13th April 2015 and has helped up to three Canowindra families stay for a combined total of 48 nights. The Ronald McDonald House in Orange has supported 209 families who live further than 50km from Orange. This accumulates to 311 stays with a total of 1761 nights of accommodation provided. Volunteers are at the heart of this organisation with over 140 active volunteers today, with just last year a total of 13 889 hours of unpaid work taken out.

Ronald McDonalds vision is to be a lead charity in Western New South Wales, striving to improve the health and wellbeing of children and their families. Ronald McDonald House Charities creates, finds and supports programs that help seriously ill or injured children and their families. CWA secretary Vicky Grant said, “the talk was great, everyone really enjoyed it!” The presentation demonstrated the importance of this service specifically to Canowindra and surrounding areas. “It takes a lot of strain off families by providing them with accommodation for their families and people can access this service for no cost,” Vicky said. CWA thoroughly enjoyed the informative evening and were then on to discuss events coming up for this year. “Our next event will be at the Canowindra Balloon Glow where we will be having a food stall so watch out for us!" Vicky Grant said.

Langdon’s Long Lunch A seven course on farm lunch paired with the award winning Printhie wines or local Borenore Brew House beer for each course. The long lunch will feature live entertainment from local artists providing all the elements required to relax and enjoy the rural setting. Langdon’s is located on small acreage on the Peabody Road Molong. The historic homestead features lawns and gardens rolling out to merge with paddocks dotted with livestock and poultry. 80% of all ingredients and wine are sourced within 4 miles of Langdon’s on Peabody. The Molong Farm vintage food van caters its chemical free, artisan produce thorough the Central West. Growing a small market garden, chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, cattle, pigs and goats. The small holding provided artisan smoked and cured small goods as well as rustic, low and slow catering. Relax and enjoy a delightful day dining in different areas of the farm. For all questions call 0473 517 637, email emma@ themolongfarm.com or find them on online and on Facebook.

A show full of colour, laughter and raising money for charity wouldn’t be complete with out the well-known Tallulah. Tallulah has come out of retirement to help a group of ladies on a mission to help inform the community of Canowindra about Autism and to help raise money for Autism Spectrum Australia. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong disorder characterised by social and learning impairment, communication difficulties and restricted and repetitive behaviours. It is often accompanied by sensory and learning difficulties. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder, meaning a difference in the way the brain is wired and how information is processed. There is no single known cause for this, but there is a strong genetic link. There is also no proven evidence that it is linked to vaccines or trauma or lifestyle factors. ASD occurs in all nations, and all ethnic and socio-economic groups around the world. You can help by attending Tallulah’s Living Colour Cabaret show on April 21st, 7.30pm at the Canowindra Services and Citizen’s Club. Tickets are $25 each and are available from the Canowindra Phoenix Office in Gaskill St, Canowindra. Money from the evening will be donated to Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) a not-for-profit organisation and Australia’s largest provider of autism support and services including; early intervention services, educational outreach programs, specialised schools, behaviour support, social groups, employment services, respite services, workshops and support for families and carers. April is Autism Awareness Month and April 2 is the United Nation’s World Autism Awareness Day where nations around the world light up their landmarks blue and people honour the day by wearing the colour blue. With an estimated 1 in 100 Australians on the autism spectrum, and it is four times more common in boys than girls it is certainly a great event to get behind.

Tallulah in full swing.

Cricketer Jake Fawcett with students from St Edwards Primary School after a cricket demonstration.

Cricket, Rugby Union, What’s Next For St Edwards?

St Edwards Primary School have been busy over the past week with a special cricket demonstration visiting the school on Thursday as well as a Rugby demonstration as part of a government initiative sporting program. Local cricket development officer Matt Tabernor, along with special guest cricketer Jake Fawcett, put on a cricket skill demonstration for the students to not only help develop their sporting ability but to help them with other aspects of life too. “Cricket is a great sport for building discipline and has great team spirit. We are all about fostering team sport, team spirit and school spirit,” said Ken McNamara. Special guest Jake Fawcett is formerly from Perth but is now playing for Blacktown in Sydney. As well as teaching them tips and tricks of the sport Jake emphasized the importance of school. “As much as you want to be a profes-

sional athlete you also need academics, learn as much as possible while at school as it will carry on for the rest of your life.” After running through some batting and catching skills students were then able to ask questions. Jake said he enjoyed being out in the county and told the students, “if you want something it doesn’t matter if you are out here in the country, train hard and you will get there whether its in sport or academics”. Students were encouraged to try all aspects of the sport. “You have got to give everything a go as you never know where you might end up or get picked for,” Matt Tabernor said. After a busy session of cricket skills for years 3 and 4 Rugby was next for years 5 and 6. Jarrod Simpson Development Officer for Central West Rugby then put on a demonstration to show students important skills to know when playing.

Philip Donato Meet And Greet Rain, hail or shine didn’t stop this meet and greet BBQ held at the CWA hall last Thursday. Meet and greets have been set up in towns across the Central West to encourage people to get to know there local member and to be able to communicate across issues that they may be facing in their local communities.

“This is the 4th one we have held since before Christmas with more coming up in Peak Hill, Molong and Trundle,” Philip Donato said. These meet and greets are a great way to get information out there and for locals to be heard. “The response has been quite well received today, it’s not the best weather conditions for people to come out but we have had quite a few coming to talk about issues in Canowindra,” Phillip Donato said. How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I have grown up in the Canowindra/ Gooloogong Area and have been back full time since September last year. I really enjoy driving into Canowindra or being in the paddock and seeing hot air balloons in the sky. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work at Garden and Montgomerie Solicitors. I work in Canowindra on Mondays and the rest of the week in the Cowra Office. What do you do to unwind after work or on the weekends? After work I try to go for a swim, play water polo or go for a bike ride. On the weekends you will normally find me in the sheep yards. What are you really good at? I like to get jobs done. If I say we are going to do it, it will get done. If you could have a super power what would it be? Reading people’s minds, because clients sometimes don’t tell you all the important facts to enable us to help with their legal issue.

COMPUTER Bytes I write this from my new premises, more pleasant than the last, and I only had to move one shop down but still hard work but it was great not to have to move so far – so come in to check out my new shop! Unfortunately, life doesn’t always go so smoothly and recently I have had several customers that have been hijacked by people pretending to be Telstra/Telco employees. One computer was taken over, remote monitoring software installed and when they refused to pay money they were locked out of their PC. However, I was able to reverse the damage remotely, find the rogue software that was installed without their permission and make things right again. Please be on your guard, don’t let unknown people into your PC, never give out Credit card or bank details to strangers. Cheers Chris

CUMNOCK LAWN MOWER RACE

Calare is well known for its iconic motor racing events and over the weekend, all eyes were on Cumnock for the annual Cumnock Show Lawn Mower Race. Defending champ, Ross Cary was back again and before the big race I took his lawn mower for a couple of test laps to run it in. Ross's high performance mower has a top speed of just over 90 kph! Despite losing the chain while leading the first race, Ross still managed to pull off second place in the next race. A truly heroic effort! Congratulations also to the Cumnock Show Society who organised another wonderful show!

SNOWY HYDRO 2.0

Every Australian should be confident that they can turn the lights on when they need them. To ensure this, the Coalition Government have announced an electricity gamechanger: the plan for the Snowy Mountains Scheme 2.0. The Government will increase the generation of the Snowy Hydro scheme by 50%, adding 2000 megawatts of re-newable energy to the National Electricity Market enough to power half a million Australian homes. This will be the largest facility of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Snowy Hydro already provides back up energy to New South Wales and Victoria and could extend to South Australia when expanded. This exciting plan would also create jobs for thousands in the construction and engineering sectors. A feasibility study is expected to be completed before the end of the year, with construction commencing soon after. ADVERTISEMENT

History Launched At Moorbel

Over 70 people attended the “The History and Character of Belmore / Moorbel” book launch last Saturday with copies going out the door. The joyous occasion held at the Moorbel Community Hall, with master-of-ceremonies Warwick Bowd passing the book to long time resident Dick Marsh, who in turn passed it to former Postmaster Gwen Landon, thence to author Debbie Rutter and at last the latest book on Canowindra district local histories was launched! All present on the day then enjoyed a delightful morning tea provided by Moorbel Hall community group. Historical Society President Ross Cleary said, “The importance of these local histories is keeping them alive and celebrating the memories and stories of our past, for both “old” and “new” residents.” It would be easy today to see Moorbel as simply a few houses on the outskirts of Canowindra and not be aware of the thriving and independent settlement it once was, with its own businesses, schools and churches. Copies of the book are available at Canowindra Newsagency and Virginia Cullane Books. Canowindra Historical Society congratulates Deb Rutter on producing such an informative book, and completing another piece in the patchwork of our local histories.

Aqua Fitness Class Finishes

As the pool season comes to an end so too does the Aqua Fitness Class. The Aqua Fitness Class was quite popular again this season and again have had another successful year. “It has been fabulous, we have only missed about one due to weather, so everyone has been very committed. We just wish it could go on a bit longer,” said Angela Ellis. Working out in the water is one of the best forms of exercise you can do as it builds cardio, strength and resistance. “It is an activity they can do without impacting on their joints,” says Angela Ellis. Water aerobics builds muscle strength but also improves flexibility, alleviates pressure on joints, relieves stress and anxiety, burns calories, reduces blood pressure and is a popular activity not limited to any age group. Congratulations to all who participated this season on a great effort and commitment to the program. With so many great benefits be sure to jump on board next season if you missed out to help improve your lifestyle. For now here are some other ideas to stay active over the cooler months. A moderate intensity aerobic activity is best for seniors or those who may struggle to perform other sporting activities. These include walking, ballroom and line dancing, riding a bike on level ground, pushing a lawn mower and playing doubles tennis, just to name a few. Getting out and being active can help you loose or maintain weight, enhances mobility and flexibility, improves sleep, boosts mood and self confidence as well as being a great way to help deal with stress or mental illness. As the cooler days approach it is just as important to get out and be active, even if you want to stay out of the cold choose activities that you can do inside.
