Cargo Raises $6,000 For Charity Kathy Wicks along with residents of Cargo put together a market day for the town to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation. The market day was a great success with over 500 people attending the event on the 25th June. “I originally only had a goal of $1,500 but when we decided on doing the market day my new goal was $4,000. I certainly didn’t think we would get $2,000 more than this, raising a total of $6,000 with more still to come in,” said Kathy.

Donations came from everywhere with the local community rallying together to make a difference. Carmen from Timber Tales donated $1 for every cup of coffee sold, coming to $234. Her dog Jaffa also got in on the spirit offering pats for 50cents. Mandy Rogers baked an array of cakes and slices with a significant amount being donated. All stall holders donated money for their site and some even donated half of what they made. Continued on page 3

Active Kids Rebate: The 2017-18 Budget will allocate $207 million over four years to help NSW families meet the cost of getting their kids to sport and fitness activities. From 1st January 2018 parents will be able to claim $100 per child, per calendar year to reduce the cost of membership fees. Parents can register online. “The health of our children is a priority for every parent and I hope this rebate is the difference it takes to enable parents to enroll their child in the sport of their choice,” said Treasurer Dominic Perrottet. Weekend Penalty Rates: The cuts to penalty rates will be phased in over a fouryear period, with the first cuts of five percent across hospitality, fast food, retail and pharmacy. Hospitality and fast food workers will then endure a 10 percent Sunday rate reduction every year, while rates for pharmacy workers will drop 15% annually. Check your next pay slip and ensure it is correct by going to https://www.fairwork. gov.au/pay/penalty-rates-and-allowances Silver Ball: 100 guests attended the occasion from all over the Central West, North Coast ad South Coast. 2016 Census Figures: Cabonne welcomes a 4.4% population growth, while residents aged 65 years or over has increased by 17.6%. “While this will be a challenge, I think catering for our senior residents presents a great opportunity for Cabonne to build on the aged care facilities we currently have and to make our shire an even more desirable place to live,” said Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper. Tractor Trek Big Brekky: On the 26th August from 7.30am to 12pm. The Canowindra Tyre Service will be hosting a big breakfast to help raise money for the Tractor Trek in September. Money raised from the Tractor Trek will then be donated to Little Wings. “I would personally like to say a big thanks to all of the businesses who have already made a substantial donation,” said Roy. Come on down and get bacon, eggs, coffee and more.

Continued from page 1 “People are so generous! I would especially like to thank the Cudal and Cargo Lions Club and Brent Twaddle for the organisations of the event. You were an invaluable asset to have in making the day run smoothly,” said Kathy. Kathy’s husband Russell was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia in 2015 and is now in remission. Russell lost all of his hair due to chemo and Kathy said to him she would grow hers and when it was long enough she would shave it for a wig for cancer sufferers. “I’m not brave, it’s not like I was loosing my hand,” Kathy laughed. ”It’s not a big deal as it is only a bit shorter than what I would normally have. The whole family has really been doing something to raise money. My daughter Rachel did the shave and other family members even waxed their legs.” All of the money raised by Kathy is being donated to the Leukemia Foundation for further research and support to people and their families who are suffering from leukemia. “They’re doing wonderful things now with immunology, targeting cancer cells instead of using chemo.” Kathy said she plans on holding another fundraiser towards the end of the year to raise money for another charity. Kathy is a wonderful lady who is determined to make a difference. Congratulations to Kathy, the team and residents of Cargo for coming together to raise money for a great cause.

Consideration For Tigers 1965 Reunion A reunion for the 1965 Premiership Winning Group 11 Under 18 teams is being organised for 2018 for players and guests. All members are being contacted to participate in the event. Tony Hardman is seeking a picture of the 1965 team and you can contact him on 0402 861 964 if you have any more information. “A few of the committee and players decided to organise a reunion for the 1968 team and also realised that the 1965 team never had a 50th anniversary so we will be celebrating that too. Rugby League has been a great thing for Canowindra with several international players and coaches being involved over the years,” said Tony. Canowindra originally had four local teams in their own competition before representing the town. In 2020 the committee are looking to organise a 100 year celebra-

tion, so be sure to keep an eye out for that in the future. Probable Team 1965: Full Back: Rodney Traves Wingers: Mick Moon and Bruce Sutton Centres: Jack Earsman and Daryl Kearns (dec'd) 5/8: Barry Middleton, 1/2: Garry Simpson Lock: Len Ryan (Captain) Second Row: Brian Moon and Graham Thomas Front Row: Mick Kinsela and John Breen Hooker: Trevor Rice Reserves: Pat O'Neill and Bob Newcombe Coach: Peter Duffy Team From Group 11 Program 1965 Full Back: John Haddon Wingers: John Ray and Graeme Traves Centres : Pat Clyburn and Robert Sutton

5/8: Bill Hilton, 1/2: Trevor Simpson Lock: Peter Fitzgerald (Captain) Second Row: Laurie Dennis and Graeme Veney Front Row: John Cousins and Peter Sargent Hooker: Gary Carpenter (dec'd) Reserves: Ray Melhuish, Daryl Fleidner and Bert Clark. Coach: Gerard Fisher (dec'd) Tony Hardman has been researching old newspaper extracts to find out some more information including; “Eugene Breen was first to score a Rugby League try in Canowindra for Easts. Father of “Bundah” and grandfather of Paul”, he said. Rugby League has been a big part of Canowindra’s community and it’s important to celebrate and remember these occasions.

Health Smart Helping Farmers With Mental Health Knowing how to speak to farmers to gain their trust and engagement is key to protecting the mental health of one of Australia’s highest risk of group suicides. New research from the University of South Australia assessed the difference between farming and non-farming adults to examine what stops them from using mental health services. “What we really wanted to pin down with the study was, do farmers have a really different set of values and circumstances that might put up barriers to getting help when they need it. Evidence suggests rural Australians prefer to seek non-professional support to manage health concerns, and they have a real desire to be independent and maintain pride, all of which may delay or even stop them from seeking mental healthcare or support,” said Melissa Hull. Farming can be a very physically and psychologically demanding occupation, being a high stress industry, impacting greatly on their mental health. Communication often becomes a barrier in rural Australia with the stereotype of selfreliance and stoicism. With a preference to seek help from family and friends rather than professionals it is recommended for those people to then seek the advice that that person needs to ensure the safety of

that individual. Signs to look out for when someone is facing a mental illness. Behavioral: inability to achieve tasks, poor concentration, social withdrawal, disinterest in normal tasks and reliance on alcohol. Emotional: feelings of sadness, guilt, frustration, defeat. Thoughts: Feeling like a burden on others, worthlessness and a sense of failure. Physical signs: disrupted sleep, headaches, fatigue and digestive issues. The most important thing is to just talk to someone. You can call Beyond Blue day or night, available 24hours a day, 7 days a week on 1300 22 4636. You can chat online from 3pm-12am 7 days a week or email Beyond Blue at any time of the day, just to have a chat. For an emergency or an immediate risk of harm you can contact 1300 659 467 or contact lifeline on 13 11 14. There are a number of other services to contact as well, which are all dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating mental illness. Make mental illness a topic to feel comfortable to talk about.

IN JULY Tis The Season To Be Jolly Christmas in July celebrations have kicked off already for this month but why exactly do we celebrate Christmas twice a year? For Australia July is generally the coldest month of winter so it was decided to mimic the northern hemisphere's Christmas with chilly weather, the odd snow man, hearty meals, roast dinners and warm drinks in front of a fireplace. There is no public holiday for the occasion but who doesn’t like another reason to celebrate? The Phoenix will again be running their Best Dressed Window Competition this year with an awesome prize up for grabs. Decorate your shop front with your best Christmas display for all of July to be in the running. Local judges will decide the winner who will be off to a hatted restaurant. The winner will receive a dinner voucher for two for a two course meal with matched wines, including a glass of sparkling on arrival from the renowned restaurant Lolli Redini, located in Orange. To enter the competition simply just dress up your window and let our judges decide as they walk down the Main Street. For this year judges are looking for you to think outside the square, so get creative. Lolli Redini is regarded as one of the top restaurants in the region with fourteen successful Sydney Morning Herald Chefs Hats since opening in 2001, along with an array of other awards. “We believe in creating dishes that use the best local produce in a manner that is refined and interesting and marrying these dishes with great wines, service and ambience.” Named after friend Grazia Lolli Redini, from the Tuscan village of San Gimignano, the Restaurant serves contemporary Italian and French influenced food using mostly local produce and other specially sourced items that conform to their highly selective criteria. That is, seasonal, organic, sustainable, low food mile and ethically farmed produce. They also have plenty of vegetarian options and cater to all dietary requirements. Their award winning wine list features the best of the locals and an extensive selection from other regions. With a prize like this be sure to dress up your window this Christmas in July!

Commercial Leases Lately I have been seeing clients for commercial leasing work which prompts this alert for landlords and tenants of commercial properties. From July this year changes to legislation that governs leases will take effect. Many changes being introduced will be beneficial to all parties making the process easier and clearer. A quick summary of some of the main changes that you will need to be aware are: 1. The landlord must provide the tenant with a copy of the fully executed lease; and if the lease is for more than 3 years it must be registered. This change will increase certainty for tenants and protect their rights if ownership of the property is transferred to a new owner. Assigning the lease to a new owner has also been streamlined. 2. The landlord is to provide a tenant with a disclosure statement at least 7 days before the lease is entered into and if they fail to do so or provide an incomplete or misleading disclosure statement the tenant will be entitled to terminate the lease within the first 6 months and may even be able to claim compensation from the landlord for reasonable costs. Tenants will also no longer be liable for financial obligations that have not been disclosed in the statement before the lease was entered into. 3. If the Landlord has a mortgage over the property Mortgagee’s consent is usually required. A landlord will no longer be able to recover consent fees charged by the mortgagee from the tenant. There have been many more changes so if you need legal advice about this or any other matter call Geoff Yeo at Peacockes.

TIGERS REPORT The Tigers played Grenfell last weekend coming away defeated 54-32. Grenfell led early in the first half with the Tigers defence needing some consolidating. Cody Berroya made a good try from a pass out wide from the scrum. Tigers became their own worst enemy by not following up in attack and failure to complete tackles. The Tigers made a good play with Brown passing it inside to Mick Clybrun to then offload to allow Brody to score under the post; Brown converted to bring the score up to 40-26. Being defeated by Grenfell means the Tigers will now not qualify for semis. This week the Tigers take on Cargo.
