Mykyla Wallace from New Zealand completing some of her training.
Balloon Training Camp
Over the last nine days Richard Swansborough from Belubula Ballooning hosted a successful hot air balloon training camp, under the sanction of the Australian Balloon Federation. Ballooning students are required to complete 20 hours of flying and pass four exams being; navigation, meteorology, flight rules and landowner relations to gain their pilot certificate. The landowner relations section talked students through where they can land in relation to livestock and crops, being a crucial element of ballooning. “It was a very successful event, despite the cold! Everyone enjoyed it and we are already planning for next year,” said Richard. One of the students, Mykyla Wallace traveled over from Hamilton, New Zealand to train for her Australian pilot endorsement. At just 23 years of age she has nearly com-
pleted her training with just a few more flying hours left to go. Student pilots, instructors and examiners travelled from Sydney, Canberra, Victoria and South Australia to all participate in this unique event. To become a pilot it is encouraged to familiarise yourself with ballooning by being a part of the crew. Ballooning can be both very challenging and rewarding. “I first got into it because of my fear of heights, I had to overcome it so I started ballooning. I then realised I wasn’t afraid of heights, I was afraid of falling. Ballooning is one of the safest ways to fly in Canowindra,” said Richard. For more information on how you can get involved contact Richard info@belubulaballooning.com

The Big Lift enjoyed volunteering at the Canowindra Community Garden on the weekend.
The Big Lift Visits Canowindra: The Big Lift is a student run volunteer organisation from the University of Technology Sydney. Over the weekend they visited Canowindra to volunteer with the Historical Society and Community Garden. While at the Community Garden 18 students were given the task to plant seedlings, make up fresh compost and to chat to local townspeople about living in Canowindra. Another group of 18 students worked at the Historical Society raking leaves and helping with tidying the exhibits for the upcoming 40th anniversary at the museum. “I’ve seen so many students do great things for their community after being inspired by the volunteering projects they participated in on past trips. In a generation that has every potential to become positively connected with the world, The Big Lift plays an essential role in building that sense of community,” says Mr Hoque.
Plastic Free July: Join the challenge and refuse single use plastic during July. Plastic bags, bottles and containers are just a few of the items that we use on a daily basis, that usually only have a single use. These products usually break up, not down, becoming permanent pollution. More than 6 out of 10 people are already reducing plastic shopping bags and avoiding pre-packaged fruit and vegetables, so join the movement and reduce your carbon footprint. NBN Update: Two thirds of the NBN regional network is now complete "With another 14 per cent currently under construction, we will soon reach the 80 per cent complete milestone outside the capital cities,” said Minister Nash. Wireless speed is expected to double to 100 megabits a second download and 40 megabits a second upload. The fixed wireless is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. "It really is amazing the Sky Muster satellites shoot data down from 36,000 kilometres above the earth to deliver broadband to nearly 80,000 customers - some of which are in mountain ranges, in the desert, in deep valleys and remote cattle stations.”
NBN is now two thirds complete.
The canowindra Phoenix is looking for the best dressed Christmas in july Window in town!
How did you enjoy the Bathurst Winter Festival?
Caddie Marshall: We loved it. Machattie Park was magic and we loved seeing the buildings come to life with the illumination. Bathurst Regional Council are to be congratulated. It will become an annual favourite for us.
Rice Family: It was a winter wonderland filled with fantasy decorations, lights and jam packed with entertainment. The Rice family spent the weekend at Bathurst enjoying the variety of specialty food, hot mulled wine and even a whiskey bar. Debbie Rice cut some moves on the Gold Italian Carousel (merry go round) with the grandkids, and Graham took photos of his kids (still not grown up ) trying to out do each other on the ice skating rink. Matt even got called an "idiot" by a spectator for skating too fast through the crowd whilst pushing his niece on a kangaroo sled, which made him laugh. The event is a credit to Bathurst City Council.

How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I've lived here all my life and love that all of our families are close by, surrounded by a tight knit community. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I have various places that I work, including Lawrence's IGA, Canowindra Trading Post, Canowindra Clay Target Club and Carinya. I love the variety of work as it gives me something new each day. My main career is an Early Childhood Educator, which is possibly one of the most rewarding careers. What do you do to unwind after work or on the weekends? I follow Ronald with his football most weekends. What are you really good at? I'm usually pretty organised and prepared. If you could have a super power what would it be? Healing powers. What is your pet hate? World negativity. Tell us about your best holiday? Have been on a few but probably most recently I went away with Ronald to the coast where we went deep sea fishing and snorkelling with NZ Seals.

Deputy Premier To Visit Canowindra
The Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, Skills and Small Business John Barilaro MP will be visiting Canowindra next Monday 17th July, as part of an electorate wide visit to the Orange Electorate. The Deputy Premier will be arriving at Montrose House at 12pm for an informal lunch and meeting. Canowindra Arts Appeal Canowindra Arts Inc would like to ask the towns leading community action and development groups whether they would join with the drafting of an appeal to Cabonne Council for help in establishing something that’s sorely missing here – a permanent community centre. Currently Canowindra needs a place where community groups can meet, work and display their activities in an affordable and accessible location. “It’s a pressing need that’s become crucially important from our point of view over the past nine months in which we’ve worked to reinstate and promote Canowindra’s position as a proven regional arts hub,” said Derek Maitland. The Canowindra Arts Inc has managed three major exhibitions, presenting the works of nearly 20 artists. This success has been achieved under the constant pressure of uncertainty – wondering just how long they could continue to enjoy the empty Gaskill Street premises. “Since the recent sale of the building we’ve looked at every possible place in Canowindra that could provide us with the space, natural light and sense of grandeur that made our exhibitions so successful,” said Derek. There seems to be no other location in Canowindra suitable enough for a perma-

Canowindra Baroquefest has shown the cultural magic they are capable of presenting and the enormous public response to the three Canowindra Arts exhibitions has confirmed the wide, enthusiastic interest in the cultural path they are promising to lay down. Canowindra has worked hard over the years to put itself on the map as a vibrant regional attraction. It now deserves a joint voluntary campaign for the support of such entities as Cabonne Council, the NSW government and private businesses for a citizens and ratepayers facility where it can meet and build on what it has already achieved. CANOWINDRA V CARGO On Sunday the Tigers travelled to Cargo for a highly anticipated local derby. Youth League played Manildra in a tight contest. The final score of 32-16 to Manildra is not a true reflection of the game with Manildra running in several late tries. The boys are starting to play some good football right at the end of the year. The League Tag girls had a tough day with Cargo taking a convincing win with the final score ending up 64-10. Despite the one sided score line, the Tigresses are improving week to week and they can keep their heads held high as they tried until the end of the game. “The girls showed considerable improvement in attack. We are going to continue to work on our defence in the 2 weeks leading up to our next game in Young against Burrangong on the 22nd,” said Kristy White. Three Points: Kiera Whatman Two Points: Sami Boog One Point: Daisy Whatman Players' Player: Paige Selton
First grade was the kind of game that had everyone at the ground on the edge of their seats - a game in which either team could have taken the win, however Canowindra sealed the win with minutes of the match remaining at 34-24. In the end it was Canowindra’s teamwork and tenacity in defence that proved the difference. Best and Fairest and Three points: Wiase Ratudina Two Points: Leo Lloilo One Point: Brydon Hughes and Callum Clyburn The Tigers have the bye next weekend.
