NSW Deputy Premier Visits Canowindra
Around 20 local people gathered at Montrose House in Canowindra on Monday to meet with the Deputy Premier of NSW and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro and Rick Colless Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources and Western NSW for an informal lunch and very informative talk about the direction of the NSW Government especially in relation to rural NSW. The Deputy Premier has been on a two week long road trip travelling around the state listening to the concerns of locals. “It is great to get out on the road and meet with the local communities to get a sense of what is happening in their region,” said John Barilaro.
The NSW Government delivered a budget earlier this year with a strong focus on Regional NSW. John said that “The Governments main focus is to ensure the regional communities have a future.” There were many questions from locals at the lunch about a range of topics including Inland Rail and freight costs to local businesses, Central West Water and in particular the Cranky Rock Dam Project, Mobile Blackspots in the region, Skills Training and who can apply for the Arts and Culture Group Funding. John Barilaro then went on to say that “The biggest issue facing the NSW Central West seems to be water.” Continued on page 2

The Deputy Premier had been in Orange earlier that day to announce that applications will be opening soon for the $200 million Stronger Country Communities Fund, John Barilaro, said the NSW Government is calling on local community groups in the region to nominate infrastructure projects to rebuild and refurbish local facilities. “Applications for funding opens on 20th September, so I encourage members of the community to nominate infrastructure projects that will improve the lives of people in the Central West and enhance the attractiveness of rural and regional NSW as a place to live, work or visit,” Mr Barilaro said. “The Stronger Country Communities Fund will build new parks, playgrounds and cycle pathways and refurbish local schools, health facilities, libraries and community centres that grow our local communities.” Mr Barilaro said the fund will support projects between $100,000 and $1 million, or higher with financial cocontribution, across 92 local government areas (LGA) in region-

al NSW, including Cabonne Shire, Forbes Shire, Parkes Shire and the City of Orange. “The 2017-18 NSW budget is about delivering for all communities. Every regional community will have access to these funds, and every regional community will have the opportunity to receive their fair share,” Mr Barilaro said. Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources and Western NSW, Rick Colless, said the Stronger Country Communities Fund presents an opportunity for Orange to embark on innovative infrastructure projects to entice people to live and work in the Central West. “The Stronger Country Communities Fund will use ‘choicemodelling’, where locals have a say in the selection process, to ensure investment in projects that support their aspirations,” Mr Colless said. The Stronger Country Communities Fund is part of new funding under the NSW Government’s $1.3 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to improve economic growth and productivity with investment in regional communities.

A wedding planner isn’t a fantasy – make it your reality.
Hello Readers, welcome to this month’s column and dare I say it “Happy Yuletide”. Christmas in July, another excuse to enjoy that special time of the year only it’s colder, so we can all enjoy a traditional hot meal in front of the fire. Personally I love it, we will be having a series of lunches and dinners to celebrate. This week is booked out but I have a couple for Tuesday 25th July, let me know if you’re interested. The house looks fabulously festive! Great Christmas fare and good company, what else do you need? Ho, Ho, Ho! It has been a nice July with lots of visitors. Can’t explain my Port Macquarie visitors coming in the winter but they like Canowindra, and Hey! what’s not to like, it’s frosty. Celebrated local lady Mavis Tobin’s 80th birthday with a beautiful dinner for her family on 8th July organised by daughter Marg. All who attended had a wonderful time celebrating this lovely lady’s milestone. Monday 10th July Allan brought 45 members of local Probus Club from Cowra over on a bus for a High Tea and an inspection of Montrose. They all loved their day and declared it a wonderful day out to experience all we have to offer. On Saturday 15th July, John & Steph Watson and I hosted a Christmas in July fundraiser at The Royal for the local league club. Steph and I donated and cooked all the food, Terry Lovett did the music and a great time was had by all. There were sensational dress ups by a lot of the boys and girls. We had a visit from John Barilaro the Deputy Premier on Monday 17th July with a meet and greet luncheon to address some situations which the government is trying to fix. Lots of money for the community, nice bloke too. Rick Colless is a great mate of mine and is the Parliamentary Secretary who organised the lunch. We have lots coming up in the next week with a Cootamundra group for Christmas lunch on 19th July and a smart Cocktail party 21st July to welcome new accountants CKC to Canowindra. Lovely people, Matty Wren is a great mate from years back and his associate Joe is a local farm boy so welcome to Canowindra! Take Care, Tommy x

History In The Club Canowindra Historical Society hosted another successful History in the Club talk last Saturday with Dr Michael Bennett delivering his talk entitled “Wiradjuri Lives”. Dr Bennett is a historian with NTSCORP Limited, the Native Title Service Provider for Aboriginal Traditional Owners in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Dr Bennett has recently completed a study entitled Orange Aboriginal Heritage Study for Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Councils researching stories of Wiradjuri people and their contribution to the pastoral industry, their role as trackers in responding to the bushrangers of the 1860s and the lives of important Wiradjuri ancestors. Key stories included the lives of Windradyne, Fanny (Banjo Patterson’s Aboriginal nanny), and Jackey Sloane. Windradyne was a Wiradjuri Chief who led Aboriginal resistance to European occupation around Bathurst. From 1822, the Wiradjuri attacked numerous pastoral stations in an attempt to wrest back control of the land. Governor Brisbane declared martial law in May 1823 and a punitive expedition was dispatched to capture Windradyne and his attackers. An unknown number of Aboriginal people were killed by the expedition and it is believed that others fled north to the Mudgee district to escape. Hostilities ceased when Windradyne marched east over the Blue Mountains to Parramatta where he attended the annual feast and blanket distribution. Jackey Sloane and his wife Maryanne and their children Johnny and Dickey worked at Cliefden for the Rothery family. Jackey and Maryanne had another son whom they named Samuel Cliefden Sloane reflecting the high level of goodwill that existed between Jackey and the Rothery family. Dr Bennett also summarised the work of many trackers who assisted the police in searching for bushrangers including Ben Hall. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the Canowindra Historical Society and the Society will be celebrating with a special exhibition at the Museum followed by a dinner on Saturday 2nd September 2017.

CANOWINDRA SPORT CANOWINDRA TIGERS CHRISTMAS IN JULY
The local junior rugby league players at the Play NRL Holiday Clinic.
PLAY NRL WESTERN NSW During the School Holidays about 28 children from Canowindra & surrounding towns participated in a three hour NRL clinic at Tom Clyburn Oval. The Play NRL Holiday Clinic is a day program for kids aged between 5 and 12 of any gender that focuses on fun, fitness and participation. Generally the NRL try to share the locations around each year, but with the Western Region so big it takes time to see all the towns. The holiday program activities are designed to cover evasion, catch and pass, kicking and tackling skills which are all very important in Rugby League. On the day the kids enjoyed a number of different drills & games as well as a couple of different challenges. Canowindra Junior Rugby League Football Club said “They all had a great time, thank-you so much for coming and running it.” “As Development Officers, we promote Rugby League & healthy lifestyle messages through school programs as well as co-ordinating a large number of Rugby League and League Tag Gala Days for local schools to participate in. While as a team we cover all of Western NSW, I’m based out of Parkes & predominantly cover the Lachlan region. Thanks to Canowindra Junior Rugby League Club for their presence on the day. They are a great club and I encourage all local juniors to sign up & give Rugby League a try next season.” Said Alex Prout Game Development Officer- Western NSW for NRL.
LOCAL LADIES SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS!
Local Canowindra woman Alison Stephens had a holiday to remember these school holidays with her family when she travelled to San Francisco to compete in the Golden Gate 30km Coastal Trail Run. Alison said that “It is a nice reminder that travel and your hobby can result in nice experiences and that it was a bonus to win on the day!” She was the first female across the line in the 30km race with a time of 2:58:51. “It was lovely to be in San Francisco doing what people who love being active & live in the city are doing on a Saturday morning, running around the San Francisco National Park taking in spectacular views of the ocean, Golden Gate Bridge & the City itself.” said Alison. “As a family we enjoy the outdoors and this was another great experience that we enjoyed as a family. Mitch & Toby were 1st in their age groups and received beautiful medals, Hayley enjoyed the trail run with a new American friend, Shelby. They both skipped to the finish line & even took a wrong turn. There were lots of smiles from everyone for the day,” said Alison. Another local Canowindra woman Sally Wallace also has something to celebrate. Over the weekend she was named as a Finalist in the 37th Annual Cowra Sports Person of the Year Awards for her participation in Triathlons around the state. Three time Olympian Lisa Curry was at the event as a special guest to inspire and motivate the audience. Well done Sally!
The Canowindra Tigers had a bye at the weekend so instead of playing football many players and supporters had a fantastic night at the Canowindra Tigers Christmas in July Party held at the Royal Hotel Canowindra. Thanks need to go to John and Stephanie Watson and Tommy Jeffs for organising the night with great food and music. There were lots of fun and laughs had by all with the Christmas theme and some great costumes. The Best Dressed Male went to Mick Clyburn and Nathan Whatman, Best Dressed Female was Kath Davis, Best Dressed Couples were Brydon Hughes & Tahlia Pearce, Aaron Earsman and Andrea Davis and Sue & Mick Vitnell. The Lucky Door Prize went to Kane Earsman.

Gwen Haydon, Daph Bryant & Diane Slattery defeated Deanna Noble, Linda Miller & Moyna Rue 25-12. The Lucky Draw was won by Shirley Robson with No. 19. I was given the incorrect information about the Points Score Winners for May, it should have been Margaret Gosper & Sandy McDonald. The Points score for June was won by Jeanette Wheeldon. If any of the equipment has been taken from the Canowindra Bowling Club kitchen by mistake, would you please return to the Club. At our monthly meeting held on 18th July, Radka Tatterson offered to be the Assistant Secretary, thank you Radka. Our sincere sympathy is extended to Pauline Carroll and family on the death of Allan on Sunday 16th July. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
