AMAZING site…The Canowindra Balloon Challenge off to a great start. This amazing picture supplied by Chris Watson of Farmpix Photography.

Look To The Skies

WOW what a treat Canowindra has had this week with Balloons filling our skies each morning! Our little village is buzzing with visitors enjoying our Balloon Week. This year there is a record 35 balloons registered coming from around Australia, New Zealand, USA, France and England. These entrants include the current World, Women’s World, Australian and French Champions so the competition will be fierce. Canowindra boasts perfect ballooning conditions “Canowindra is situated in a basin, which means the high winds mostly pass over the top thus the winds are generally calm. The road network is also extremely good for retrieving the balloons after they land,” Organiser Jan Kerr said. This Saturday 28th April the Cabonne

Country Balloon Glow will commence at 4pm with a Food, Wine and Craft Market. There will be local children dancing from 4pm followed by the Pilots on Parade at 5.40pm and then the Balloon Glow will start at 7pm. A standout event of the competition is the Key Grab which will be held on Sunday 29th April. The Key Grab is probably the most spectacular event for the public to watch during the challenge. Balloons launch from a site of their choosing. The aim is to fly in to try and pluck a large key from the top of a flagpole. The key represents a major cash prize for the first one to get it. Don’t forget to keep one eye on the sky!

Hello Readers, The Phoenix would like to extend a warm welcome to all of the lovely visitors that are in town this week for the Balloon Challenge. It is so wonderful to see our little village a buzz each day with people. The Balloon Challenge week really is a great event for our little town with many economic benefits to all local businesses. Canowindra is the Wiradjuri word for ‘home’ and we hope that is what it becomes for all the visitors whilst staying in our beautiful town. Each morning and afternoon this week Canowindra will be a buzz with balloons filling the skies. It is well worth waking up early to be delighted with views like no other, with colourful arrays of balloons floating overhead and the roar of the flames to keep them afloat is a sound like no other. After chasing the balloons around the country roads there are many things to explore in our iconic and historic little village.

The famous bendy Main St called Gaskill St is filled with cafes, shops and pubs. It is also home to the Age of Fishes Museum showcasing the 360 million year old fossils found just outside of Canowindra. Canowindra is a rich farming area with many vineyards and local produce grown in the region. Make sure you sample some of the lovely local produce and fine wine on offer. We hope you enjoy this bumper 16 page Special Edition of the Phoenix and also enjoy your stay! Sarah Maynard Publisher

Fun Balloon Fact - Balloons use approximately 1 litre of LPG per flying minute. This is the same gas you use at home in your BBQ.

$11,000 In Federal Funding For Canowindra Community Bowling Club

Cr Cheryl Newsom opened the “Impressions of War” Exhibition with artist Derek Maitland.

Never Before Seen Images A Must See War as a news feature correspondent for an American media chain in the pivotal years of 1966 to 1968. His experience culminated with the communist Tet Offensive in April 1968, a vast national uprising which shocked the Americans into realising this was a conflict they could never win and began Washington’s prolonged and painful withdrawal. The photos in the exhibition have been packed away for 50 years and are being shown publicly for the first time in Canowindra. “Impressions of War” forms the fifth art exhibition that Canowindra Arts has presented since the not-for-profit arts group was formed nearly two years ago. In that time, the group has provided exhibition opportunities for around 20 Canowindra and local regional artists, and this year it will be conducting its second art mentoring workshops for schoolchildren, and putting their artwork on show too.

The Canowindra Arts Inc officially opened their latest exhibition last Friday night with a great turn out of locals and visitors to Canowindra attending. “Impressions of War” by Derek Maitland is an exhibition of never before seen images of the Vietnam War. The savage 10-year conflict that ended more than four decades ago, yet, for many people, especially the men who were sent to fight it, the mental wounds still haven’t healed completely and the pain is as intense as it ever was then. Canowindra Arts Artist and Writer, Derek Maitland, went to the war, not as a combatant but simply as a young 23-year-old television and newspaper journalist who saw the conflict as his chance to break out of the rather mundane news and media culture of that time. To him, Vietnam promised new excitement and what he regarded at that time as the zenith of journalism, to become a war correspondent. Derek covered the Vietnam

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee announced recently that the Canowindra Bowls and Recreation Club Ltd were successful under Round Three of the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. “I’m delighted to announce that the Canowindra Bowls and Recreation Club Ltd have been awarded an $11,000 grant under Round Three of the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme,” Mr Gee said. “The funding will go towards enhancing the outdoor area at the club, including new decking and a playground area.” “The new outdoor entertainment area will create new space for members and visitors to enjoy and the weather-proof additions for the playground will allow children to play all year round.” The Federal Government committed $22.5 million to Round Three of the Stronger Communities Programme in the 2017 Budget.

Installation Ceremony Within The Freemasons

On Saturday April 7th the Holy Royal Arch Chapter of Robert Russel King that meets only six times a year gathered at the Canowindra Lodge to change and install new Principles. The Holy Royal Arch is one of many orders of the Freemasons and regardless of what lodge they represent the Masons present are all considered to be equal. The women’s equivalent of the Masons is the order of the Eastern Star. To be a Freemason you must believe in a higher being however it doesn’t necessarily have to be God. There were visitors from Picton, Moruya, Parkes and Bathurst lodges as well as other state chapters from their respected lodges. The installation acknowledged the incoming 1st Principle and the outgoing 1st Principle with the election of office lasting 12 months. The incoming 1st Principle was local Patrick Fitzgerald with the outgoing 1st Principle being Cowra local Ron Webb. As part of the installation the master makes obligations to perform his duties as the Masons are about making good people better. Important roles and installations: • Grand Chapter Representative: MichaelFreeman Robinson • 1st Principle: Patrick Fitzgerald • 2nd Principle: Sam Beattie • 3rd Principle Outgoing 1st: Ron Webb • Director of Ceremonies: David Francis After the installation the Masons proceeded to the Canowindra Golf Club for a celebratory Banquet and a few drinks. The Freemasons are always open to those interested in Freemasonry and if interested contact details are posted on a board outside the Canowindra Lodge opposite St Edwards School in Blatchford St.

THERE WAS AN AMAZING RESPONSE to the 13 community projects to be submitted for funding under the second round of the NSW Stronger Country Communities Fund. Just under 1,500 letters of support and petitions were received when public comment and feedback was sought, which should considerably enhance the applications when they are submitted early next month. The projects, with a total value of more than $3.6 million, range from the expansion of long day care facilities at Molong and Cudal to sporting venue upgrades, major showground improvements and the construction of shared mobility access pathways in various towns and villages. CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION is being considered for public places in relevant Cabonne towns and villages. Council has formed a working party to undertake a detailed assessment and address the necessary criteria needed to install the technology. This follows an initial request to investigate installing CCTV in the Molong and Canowindra business districts. The assessment will determine whether there is a need for the CCTV and whether Council proceeds further with project. MORE COMMUNITY PROJECTS will be funded under the second round of the Council’s Community Assistance Program. Applications for projects worth more than

$45,000 have been received from organisations in Cudal, Eugowra, Manildra, Canowindra and Molong. Just under $32,000 is available under this round of funding. Applications are being assessed and a report will be prepared for Council’s May meeting for Councillors to determine the successful projects. These grants are for not-for-profit groups undertaking projects on non-commercial facilities in the Cabonne Local Government Area. Grants are provided on a 50:50 basis, but communities can provide their half of the funding through voluntary labour or in-kind contributions. A FURTHER $2,950 HAS BEEN DONATED to worthy causes in the past month, with Council contributing $1,600 to the Canowindra RSL Sub-branch for two seats to be placed in the grounds of Canowindra hospital; $1,000 to Borenore CWA for repairs to the hall kitchen; $250 to NAIDOC Week school initiatives; and $100 to Borenore student Paris Capell to represent the Orange electorate at the NSW Youth Parliament. This brings the total value of donations provided to local organisations and individuals in 2017-18 to just under $7,000. Council also allocated $1,000 from its Events Assistance Program to Cudal Camp Draft Association for its two-day event to be held later this year and $500 to the Make It, Bake It, Grow It Market to be held in Canowindra on April 27 and 28 to coincide with the hot air ballooning festival.

CANOWINDRA INTERNATIONAL BALLOON CHALLENGE The skies above Canowindra have been filled with colour as the International Balloon Challenge is on again. The Balloon Glow takes place on Saturday and I encourage everyone to go along – it’s a spectacular sight! A lot of work goes into this magnificent and iconic event. Well done and congratulations to Graham and Jan Kerr, their organising team, and the hundreds of volunteers!

Andrew with Cr Kevin Walker.

$11,000 IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR CANOWINDRA COMMUNITY BOWLING CLUB I was delighted to recently announce the Canowindra Bowls and Recreation Club have been awarded an $11,000 grant under Round Three of the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. The funding will go towards enhancing the outdoor area at the club, including new decking and a playground area. The work (as always) is being carried out with terrific community support and I can't wait to see the finished project! The grant comes on the back of a previous Federal Government grant to install an automatic sprinkler system for the club's immaculate greens. Canowindra Bowling Club is going from strength to strength and I'm really proud that the Federal Government is playing a role in supporting this iconic Canowindra institution!

MORE AUSSIE VISITORS TO CALARE

New data from the National Visitor Survey (NVS) has revealed more domestic visitors are travelling to Calare. The NVS data found 2.54 million people visited Central New South Wales in 2017. This represents a 21 per cent increase from the year before.

Visitor nights to the central NSW region added up to 7.2 million which is an increase of 26 per cent in the past 12 months.

The figures also show $970 million was spent in the area in the year ending December 2017, with an average spend of $381. The Calare electorate has a lot to offer so it’s great to see more Aussie visitors are choosing to holiday in the region we call home.

GOOD NEWS AS LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FALLS

Unemployment rates continue to fall in the Cabonne Local Government Area. In the December quarter for 2016, the unemployment rate was 2.7 per cent and fell to 2.3 per cent in the December 2017 quarter. This is well below the national average of 5.5 per cent.

Overall in the Calare electorate, the unemployment rate for the December 2017 quarter was 3.9 per cent – a 0.5 per cent decrease from the same period the year before.

ROUND ONE OF THE LOCAL SPORTING CHAMPIONS PROGRAM OPEN

Lithgow’s iconic Ironfest was another outstanding success on the weekend with huge crowds and people from all over Australia and the world attending. This year’s theme was Wild West. I went as the character Thor (in a cowboy hat!) and had a very tough time helping to judge the costume competition!

Last week I attended the National Press Club in Canberra where the Deputy PM Michael McCormack gave his first address. I was very happy that he publicly backed Charles Sturt University’s plan to build a new medical school to train doctors in the bush for practice in the bush. Eighty per cent of places will be quarantined for country students.

Country people have worse health outcomes and lower life expectancies than city people. In some communities people are waiting weeks or months just to see a GP. Some of our communities can’t even get a GP to their town! Enough is enough. We have to try something different. The time for the Murray Darling Medical School has come!

Help For Drought Affected Farmers Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update As the market heads into its traditional quiet period wool receivals are slowing, this combined with the historically low amount of wool being held in brokers stores, has buyers concerned about securing quantity. These concerns contributed to a high level of demand this week. From the opening hammer strong buyer sentiment was evident as buyers fought to secure their share of the smaller offering, pushing the market up across the entire merino spectrum. By the close of trade prices had generally increased by 30-60 cents. Buyers are however finding it increasingly difficult to place the growing number of low yielding and out of specwools, and as a result the discount for these types is increasing. The crossbred sector also experienced strong rises, 26 through to 32 sold at levels 40-60 cents above those achieved at the previous sale, whilst 25 microns were 60-130 cents dearer. The oddment market also rose for the fourth consecutive week. 43,648 bales are currently rostered for sale next week.

A new Drought Transport Fund announced last week by the NSW Government will help farmers manage livestock through dry conditions. The NSW Drought Transport Fund will provide up to $20,000 in low interest loans, with a two-year interest and repayment free period. Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair said the fund would help eligible farmers pay freight costs for fodder, water, or to move stock to agistment. Mr Blair said these costs have provided significant challenges for a number of producers who are trying to manage their property during these difficult conditions. “Farmers have told us they need this help and the NSW Government has heard them loud and clear,” Mr Blair said. “We know that more than a third of the state is struggling with drought or conditions approaching drought. My colleagues, including the Member for Upper Hunter, Michael Johnsen have expressed particular concern for the Hunter, Central Tablelands, Central West and in the Far West of the state.” “Primary production is the lifeblood of the communities in these regions and when farmers are struggling, the whole community feels the impact. This additional step in our drought strategy will allow farmers to better manage core breeding stock, which

will in turn enable a more rapid recovery when conditions improve.” The NSW Drought Transport Fund will complement existing transport subsidies for the cost of transporting donated fodder within NSW and transporting stock off a property for animal welfare purposes. More information on the NSW Drought Transport Fund and application details are available from www.droughthub.nsw.gov. au.

GREEN Thumb

Roses are on my mind at the momentordering a new batch of over 900 roses from wholesale growers across a couple of states, to replace the similar number that we have sold over the past 12 months. Some gardeners see them as a bit old fashioned but I have always loved them for their colour, fragrance and hardiness. Looking at grower catalogues and gardening magazines in recent times has highlighted a few new cultivars that you may like to consider for an appropriate, sunny spot in your garden. When considering climbing roses I always find it hard to go past the beautiful Pierre de Ronsard (light pink) or Gold Bunny (yellow). There is a new climber, Arabia, that has fragrant orange/peach coloured blooms and another, Future, that has double, white/pale pink blooms. New bush roses that are getting strong interest are Fairytale Magic, a floribunda with old style double pink, fragrant flowers; Outback Dreaming with strong golden blooms and a touch of red on the petal edges; Dream Chaser with bright pink, double, old fashioned blooms; Governor Marie Bashir an Australian bred, floribunda rose with classic light pink flowers, named after a lady we all respect. The Unconventional Lady rose (who comes up with these names!) is a new, tall growing hybrid tea rose with beautiful deep pink, fragrant flowers. Groundcover and small bush roses that are great for pots and small garden beds are popular. I sell lots of Purple Rain which grows to about a 50cm high mound, covered in clusters of violet pink blooms. Garden of Roses is a new one, a floribunda growing to about 60cm with double pink/ apricot blooms. Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

CANOWINDRA SPORT

Python John Grant in action on Saturday. (Picture by Lauren Toovey)

CANOWINDRA PYTHONS Last Saturday the Pythons hosted competition favourites Temora. The afternoon kicked off at 2pm with the Temora women’s side taking on Orange Emus in an entertaining game of footy. Temora got the win with plenty of players on the bench proving the difference. In the men’s game the big Temora pack with a quick backline surprised the Pythons in the first half running in 5 tries to the Pythons 1, with Ronnie Lawrence busting his way over the line. After a chat at half time the Canowindra boys came out a lot stronger and muscled

up against the Tuskers and took a little more control of the game. Though after the first half onslaught the Pythons never mustered enough points in the second stanza. Although Ronnie crossed the line once more and young Harry Jeffries proved he is more then up to the challenge of the open grade and crossed for a great try also. Plenty of players had great games with the Watt boys Mick and Luke having huge impacts also Hayden Ewart, Alex Gavin, Kiwi Steve and Tommy Lamond all getting through plenty of work in the forwards and in the backs Freddy Trengove, John Grant and Jack Grant played well. Points for the week went to: 3 points to Jason Beveridge, 2 points to Ronnie Lawrence and Players Player and 1 point to Dan Bowd and Harry Jeffries. This weekend is a general bye, the boys head to Harden on Saturday 5th May for what should be another great game with Harden undefeated so far this year. By Adam Nash

MEN’S BOWLS Last Saturday a major singles match was played with Steve Kirkman against Ian Nelder. After 20 ends Ian had a handy lead of 26-15 but after that Steve was able to
