Bendigo Bank Announces Ian Simpson And Co Canowindra As The Local Agency

Bendigo Bank have announced today, that Ian Simpson and Co Canowindra will be the new agency for Bendigo Bank in Canowindra. Chairperson of the Community Bank Committee, Cheryl Newsom said, “We are delighted with this announcement, after what would seem a rather lengthy process. This is the first step towards the establishment of our Community Bank here in Canowindra and the agency will be open once all of the fit out has been completed and the relevant staff have undertaken their training." “This should be within the next 4-6 weeks. By having the agency open, this will mean that local people can once again enjoy the benefits of a full banking service here in

Canowindra, after NAB closed their doors last year.” “If you are looking to open an account or take out a mortgage or a personal loan, then the team from Orange, headed by Belinda Larkin can help in the meantime until the Agency is open,” said Cheryl. Belinda Larkin, Orange Manager for Bendigo Bank has been spending quite a lot of time in the district and she will be looking forward to meeting many existing and potential new customers once the Agency has been opened. Ian Simpson and Co is located at 80 Gaskill Street, just opposite Montrose House and the front of their office has been converted already into a banking office

The Stroke Foundation has welcomed the Federal Government’s 2018 Budget record investment in health and called for a targeted focus on support for Australians to avoid and recover from stroke. The Government’s commitment to essential services provided reassurance, but for the Australians who will suffer more than 56,000 strokes this year and their families, more is needed. Currently, there is no guarantee all Australians will have access to the best practice stroke care we know saves lives and reduces disability. Regional Australians are among those most impacted. Research shows regional Australians were 19 percent more likely to have a stroke than their metropolitan counterparts. Regional Australians are also more likely to die from a stroke or be left with an ongoing disability simply because they do not have access to specialist stroke treatment and care. This Budget acknowledges current inequalities within the health system, by increasing focus on improving health services for rural and regional Australians. This is an important first step, but I would implore

the Government to take them further. There is an enormous opportunity to improve health services for rural and regional Australia by utilising digital health technologies and establishing a national telehealth network. Too many Australians are dying or being left with an ongoing disability as a result of stroke. Patient outcomes vary depending on where you live and your access to timecritical treatment. This needs to change. A national telehealth network will remove geographical barriers and improve access to not only time-critical stroke treatment but diagnosis and treatment of other conditions. There is one stroke in Australia every nine minutes. We must look after ourselves and each other to stay out of hospital, this plan will provide people with some of the tools to do so. Regular exercise, healthy eating, and managing blood pressure will go a long way to preventing stroke and reducing the associated spiralling costs to the health system and economy. Kind regards, Sharon McGowan Chief Executive Officer Stroke Foundation

Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty and Cabonne Daroo Business Awards committee member Cr Cheryl Newsom with Daroo The Platypus, the awards mascot, at yesterday’s launch of the 2018 awards..

Daroo Awards To Showcase Best Businesses In Cabonne

“The profile of the awards has grown substantially since their inception in 2000 and, as well as being highly sought by a range of businesses, organisations and individuals, the Daroos have become a blueprint for business awards in a number of other regional areas,” Cr Beatty said. Customers and clients will have a say in which businesses are recognised, with a people’s choice format deciding the winners in most categories. Nominations are now open and close on 30 June 2018. Nomination forms will be available at various points in all Cabonne villages and can also be obtained by contacting Central West Business HQ on 6362 0448 or emailing daroo@becbiz.com.au Cr Beatty urged clients and customers to nominate Cabonne businesses they believe are worthy of recognition. Once all nominations are received, finalists will be determined in each category and the online voting process will open.

The quality and diversity of businesses in the Cabonne Shire will be showcased by the 2018 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards which were launched last Tuesday 22 May 2018. Acknowledged as one of the major events on the regional business calendar and a model for business awards in rural Australia, the Daroos recognise the achievements and contributions of Cabonne businesses and their employees. The coveted Best Business in Cabonne and 16 other category winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Eugowra on Friday 2 November 2018. The theme of this year’s awards is Future Proofing Cabonne and a new category has been added this year for businesses that have futureproofed through innovation. Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty said the awards recognise businesses and organisations that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their service or management.

The newly elected Canowindra Business Chamber committee and members met last Monday night at the Canowindra Services Club. The Canowindra Business Chamber is looking to support applications for funding for the painting of the concrete silos, and looking at the potential of a regional Silo Trail. Apparently there are various local parties interested in the silo precinct, and the Chamber asks that they contact Graeme Beasley at the Old Vic Inn, prior to the next meeting on 20 June 2018, so that their activities can be taken into account in any future plans. The Chamber is looking forward to supporting commemorations for the 100 year anniversary of WWI around Remembrance Day this year with Christine Sampson from the RSL Sub branch attending the meeting to discuss this. The Chamber has also received a great suggestion about bidding for a visit to Canowindra from the Melbourne Cup and will look into this for 2019. The meeting heard from Graham and Jan Kerr that the 2018 Canowindra International Balloon Challenge was a great success again this year, and they are looking forward to next year. The Chamber also spoke about the Canowindra Community Bank and when it will open, which is not too far away. The Chamber are always looking for new members to join and have placed suggestion boxes around town at the Newsagency and Bottle Shop for those interested to have their say. The next meeting will be a breakfast meeting on Wednesday 20th June at 8am with the venue to be advised at a later date. For more information please like and follow the Canowindra Business Chamber Facebook Page or contact Graeme Beasley, President Canowindra Business Chamber on Ph 6344 1009 or Email info@ oldvicinn.com.au

School Scoop It’s All About The Mice The Makukuhan Band with St Edward’s students Tom Phelan, Florence McDonald, Jasper Millward, Eadie Brown and Sophie Phelan.

Baroquefest For The Children Of Canowindra

The Primary School children of Canowindra and surrounding villages were treated to a musical performance by the lively and exciting band Makukuhan last Thursday morning at the Canowindra Services Club. Over 300 infant and primary school students from Canowindra Public School, St Edward’s Primary School, Wyangala Dam Public School, Eugowra Public School and St Joseph’s Primary School from Eugowra packed into the hall to be entertained by the three Indonesian musicians. The three musicians created great rhythms, introducing their young audience to the percussion instruments of the Gamelan Band. The band weaved story into their music, and got the children involved in a very interactive performance keeping them on the edge of their seats with anticipation and fun. The Canowindra Baroquefest and Musica Viva need to be thanked for bringing this great lively performance to the children of Canowindra!

Canowindra High School

School leaders Julia Stanley and Will Wright travelled to Sydney on Wednesday 23rd May in order to visit the NSW Parliament House and to meet the Lieutenant-Governor The Honourable TF Bathurst AC, Chief Justice of The Supreme Court of New South Wales at Government House on Thursday 24th May, as part of the Secondary Schools Leadership Day run by Parliament House. The students were accompanied by Ms Daniel and Mr Wright, the students had a wonderful time and really enjoyed this valuable experience.

Children from St Edward’s Catholic Primary School, Canowindra Pre-School and Cabonne/Blayney Family Daycare joined libraries and schools across Australia in reading the same book at the same time to promote National Simultaneous Storytime. More than 500,000 participants in over 6,000 locations were captivated during the storytelling that took place across the country on Wednesday 23rd May at 11am. This year the book was Hickory Dickory Dash written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. Hickory Dickory Dash is the real tale of the mouse that ran up the clock. It is an exciting tale of cat and mouse, as a mother mouse searches for her two sons all the while watching out for the prowling house cat. Vanessa Fisher, Librarian and Teacher at St Edward’s Primary School had the children hanging on her every word as she made the story come alive with her captivating storytelling. The Kindergarten class from St Edward’s also made their own mouse-mask to wear during the story to take them even further into storyland. The children all had a wonderful time listening to the enchanting story and asking questions afterwards. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 18th successful year, it is an event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy that explores age-appropriate themes.

CWA Speech Competition

Four students from CPS went across to All Saints in Bathurst last week to compete in the CWA Speech competition. All the students did a fantastic job and gained a lot from the experience. Congratulations to Nina Cuddy who was awarded second place out of 44 Year 4 students! Nina came second in her age group and will represent the school at Molong in a few weeks’ time.

CANOWINDRA PRE-SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN RECOGNISED IN PARLIAMENT I recently had the opportunity to recognise a number of local pre-schools in the Calare electorate in Parliament, including Canowindra Pre-School Kindergarten which is celebrating it's Diamond Jubilee this year.

Our families, communities and nation benefit enormously from our early educators and their dedication to and care for our children. It’s important that we acknowledge and support the great work that happens in our preschools and early learning environments. Here is an excerpt from my speech:

"Canowindra Pre-School Kindergarten has now been educating and caring for children in our community for 60 years.

On the weekend they marked their diamond jubilee with a celebration, raising funds for a refurbishment and expansion that will help them grow into the next 60 years. Seventy families are currently enrolled, including children from Canowindra, Eugowra, Cudal and Cowra.

I'd like this House to recognise the vibrant preschool community of Canowindra and the terrific work they do. This includes Director Liz Francis; teachers Naomi Dwight, Denise Fisher, Katie Kelly, Leanne Coady, Margie Duguid; and the administrative work of Adelaide Lawrence."

NEW AUSTRALIAN FLAG FOR CANOWINDRA BOWLING CLUB

I recently visited the Canowindra Bowls and Recreation Club to present a new Australian flag. During my visit I also announced $11,000 in funding for the Bowling Club, after they were successful under the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme. The grant will go towards enhancing the outdoor area at the club, including new decking and a playground area.

2018 CANOWINDRA INTERNATIONAL BALLOON CHALLENGE

The Canowindra International Balloon Challenge was another huge success!

I attended the 2018 Balloon Glow and it was terrific to see so many people enjoying this spectacular local event. Well done to organisers Graham and Jan Kerr and your wonderful team of volunteers on the biggest and best Balloon Challenge and Glow ever!

BUDGET DELIVERS TAX RELIEF! Low and middle income earners are the big winners in this year’s Budget with a big new tax relief package. Taxpayers will get cash back from the government when they lodge their tax returns. For example, someone earning $50,000 a year will get a cash rebate of $530.

Andrew with Caddie Marshall and Jan Kerr.

INSTANT ASSET WRITE OFF EXTENDED FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES The $20,000 instant asset write-off is continuing for another year until 30 June 2019. It means local businesses can update their assets up to a value of $20,000 and write it off against their tax instantly (as opposed to writing it off over a number of years). It’s not limited to one asset either.

And beyond the cash-back, the budget has delivered still more tax savings as the years This is great news and I would encourage all progress. Any tax policy that sees the government of our hard-working small business people in giving back taxpayers some of their hard-earned Canowindra to take advantage of it! is a good thing!

DROUGHT ASSISTANCE This week I spoke to the Coalition party room about the need to be supporting our farmers in drought.

Students wishing to qualify as independent will know whether their parental income is above or below the cut-off before they decide whether to take a gap year. The time required for a gap year has also been reduced from 18 months to 14 months. These changes will take place from January 1, 2019.

$10,000 BUDGET INCENTIVE TO HIRE OLDER AUSTRALIANS Wage subsidies of up to $10,000 are available for employers who hire mature age workers. This is part of the expanded access to the Restart wage subsidy delivered in the Federal Budget.

It complements the government’s recent Career Transition Assistance Program which will be trialled in the Central West from July (the only trial site in NSW). This program

provides training and support for people aged over 45 to get back into the workforce and VERTO and OCTEC will be delivering the program in the Central West.

Mature age workers have the experience and skills that make a huge contribution to our economy so I’m really pleased that the Australian Government is helping to create more employment opportunities for them.

GREEN Thumb Indoor plants are certainly rising in popularity again. To quote a prominent interior designer - “they are aesthetically pleasing and bring a sense of life to any space, not to mention that they are good for us and the environment”. In the open living rooms of our homes, plants with large leaves and eye-catching foliage shapes and colours are seeming to be most popular. Some of the best ones are Philodendron Xanadu, fiddle leaf figs, peace lilies, Zanzibar gem and palms such as Lady palm and Kentia palm. Plants with hanging or trailing growth habits are very much increasing in popularity-including Devil’s ivy, string of pearls, chain of hearts and Spanish moss. Some of these are particularly suited to hanging pots in bathrooms. Succulents have always been seen as hardy, indoor options. Mother in laws tongue has strappy, variegated foliage and is very popular. Zygocactus can produce amazingly complex and attractive flowers. On the matter of flowering indoor plants, some of the other best options are cyclamen, kalanchoes and bromeliads. Caring for our indoor plants can be a challenge. Knowing when to water them seems harder to decide than for plants outside in our gardens! The best practical advice I have seen is to stick your finger into the potting mix-if it feels dry in the top 2cm, it needs watering. If the potting mix feels moist, hold off with the watering. As a general rule, most indoor plants will only need watering about weekly. Keeping the leaves of indoor plants free of dust is a challenge. Give the leaves a wipe with a soft, damp cloth about once a month or take them outside and spray the leaves with water. Avoid locating plants close to heaters in winter and most indoor plants will do best if they get at least some indirect sunlight. Fertilise your indoor plants with controlled release, granular fertilizer twice per year (spring and autumn) or maybe every couple of months with a water soluble fertilizer. What a wonderful week the Balloon Challenge was. Canowindra Challenge Board wishes to thank all those that made it possible. Firstly the landowners, our event can’t bring the economic benefits and joy to our town without you allowing us to launch and land on your properties. A huge thank you. Our volunteers play a big role in the smooth running of the event. Michelle and her team worked wonders, from manning the office, selling merchandise, having the early morning tea and snacks ready, being Mr Fix It, manning the LPG station and organising the campers. To Andrew Phelan from Canowindra High School and his Duke of Edinburgh students, who got up early to act as a Target Team every day, again a huge thanks. Without the support of our local advertisers and sponsors we could not make it happen, so thank you. The involvement of our community keeps growing and we hope you enjoyed the week and we look forward to your support again next year. This year we had a children’s’ art competition. CANOWINDRA SPORT

The Canowindra Pythons packing in for a scrum against Condobolin on Saturday.

CANOWINDRA PYTHONS The Pythons had a great home game last Saturday against Condobolin on a very warm autumn afternoon. A large home crowd gathered to cheer on the boys to victory in a high scoring and entertaining game of Rugby. Final score was 46-29 to Canowindra. The Pythons have a bye for the next two weekends.

CANOWINDRA TIGERS The Canowindra Tigers started the first half in second gear and allowed Trundle too much field position. The Tigers gave Trundle too much possession from drop ball’s and too many penalties which Trundle capi-

talised on running 3 tries in 16 minutes to lead 16-0. Although Trundle scored two early tries the Tigers showed true spirt and played very entertaining football. The forwards showed tenacity in attack and defence and the backs capitalised pushing through Trundle's defence. This resulted in the Tigers scoring three tries closing the gap to twelve points and were unlucky not to score more. The Tigers won the second half 16-12 but had given the competition leaders too much start and the final score was 38-26to Trundle. Best and Fairest Points went to 3 - Dan Middleton, 2 - Kain Earsman and 1 - Nathan Whatman, Dave Hogan and Brydon Hughes. Points came from try scorers Dan Madden 2, Brydon Hughes 2, Nathan Whatman 1 and Matt McLean kicked 3/5 goals. By Barry Traves

For the first half of the game the scores were close with Bob and Brian leading 12-10 after 12 ends. Then Garry and Steve took control for the rest of the game winning 23-15. Saturday June 2 - Major singles - P Taylor v M Cramp Marker V Mirto. Major pairs semi finals - B Lees and D Beath v C and B Webb. G Fairley and P Kennedy v S Kirkman and I Nelder. Minor Fours - A Wyburn, D Watt, T Fisher and B McClintock v T Tuimauga, P Markcrow, L Nunn and K Walker. Sunday June 3 - Be sure to be at the club by 1.30pm if you wish to participate in the novelty event worth a jackpot of $665. This will be followed by mixed mufti bowls being turn around triples with names in by 1.30pm for 2.00pm start. One game of 15 ends. The badge draw of $450 will be drawn between 5.00pm and 6.00pm. Sympathy goes out to family and friends of Ron Lynch who passed away late Thursday night. It would be appreciated for bowlers in attendance at Ron's funeral service this Thursday to form a guard of honour in respect to Ron who was a patron and life member of our club. By Ian Nelder
