The Southern Star Rural Senepol/Angus Steer.
Biggest Steer Weight Gain Ever?
Canowindra based Senepol Stud Southern Star Rural has recorded the highest midterm weight gain during the prestigious Callide Dawson Beef Carcase Competition in QLD with a Senepol/Angus Steer gaining a whopping 4.6kg per day. This is the highest mid-term weight gain recorded in the 30 year history of the competition. The 24-month-old steer, one of three entered by first time exhibitors Clayton and Sarah Maynard, Southern Star Rural, Canowindra NSW, currently leads the pack of 143 competition steers at the 53 day mark of their feedlot preparation. Owner Clayton Maynard from Canowindra, integrated Senepols alongside a composite breeder herd when he began his operation eight years ago, with this indulgent steer sired by 5 Star 130509. Mr Maynard credited genetic selection as the secret to the steer’s surprising success
having been a middle of the range animal when he left for the competition. “At the time I didn’t think this particular steer was a stand out, he wasn’t an overly big calf and was middle of the range for weight,” he said. “I think we are doing a good job, but entering a competition like this provides positive afirmation on the decisions we have made. I think that’s vital for decision making down the track.” Senepols are leading the way for breed results too with the top four exhibits doing 3.41kg/day, ahead of the overall competition average of 2.87kg/day. A selection of quality Senepol and Senepol/Angus and Senepol/Charolais bulls are available for sale from Southern Star Rural in Canowindra. Call Clayton Maynard on 0439 029 204 for more information.

It saddened me to read of the death of old "Gunna" Lynch. He was a power-house that was a bit like the “Eveready Bunny” in that he was always moving about with a high degree of energy. Commiserations to the family and, in particular Robert, with whom I sometimes conflicted on the footy field as school-kids. Vale Ron. Regards Robert Sherwood Perth Western Australia

indra; Reedy Creek Road, Eugowra; Yellowbox Road, Cudal; Fish Fossil Drive, Canowindra and Nanami Lane, Cargo-Canowindra. Local heavy patching will be undertaken on Davys Plain Road, Cudal. Reseals will be carried out in Belmore Street, Canowindra and Short Street, Canowindra. While the shire is desperate for droughtbreaking rain, many of the savings are due to favourable weather conditions.
MAYORAL NOTES CABONNE’S “FOOD BASKET” BRAND SHINES
Cabonne Council will retain its widely known “Food Basket” logo and brand after a study revealed it had a 95% recognition factor among local residents. Council engaged consultants to conduct the brand recognition exercise to help us determine whether we needed a rebranding strategy. As part of the exercise, participants in the research were asked to identify seven council logos, which had the names of the particular council removed. Cabonne’s logo achieved the highest recognition factor. Almost 79% of respondents said the Cabonne brand represented the local area, more than 65% described it as regional and 23% described it as warm. The overview was that the current logo and brand represented and highlighted the country flavour, industry and diversity of Cabonne and what it produces. There’s an attachment to the colours showcasing the agricultural and country element of the Shire, and people were familiar and attached to the idea of Cabonne being a “food basket”. The results confirmed Council’s belief that the expense of developing a new brand was not warranted, particularly when the new brand may not have the same recognition factor and emotional attachment as the existing one. Although designing a new brand would cost about $20,000, the ultimate cost of new signage, stationery and other costs could be more than $1 million over time. That’s money we would prefer to spend on infrastructure and services for Cabonne residents and ratepayers.
MORE THAN $1.2M OF ADDITIONAL ROADWORKS
Additional road works will be undertaken throughout the Shire as the result of savings achieved on works completed during the past year. An extra $426,000 is now available for local heavy patching, $420,000 for gravel resheeting and $371,000 for local reseals. Gravel resheeting will be carried out on Lockwood Road, Canow-
SCHOOL SCOOP
School Leaders from Cabonne’s three high schools spoke to Council last week on issues and infrastructure upgrades their fellow students consider important. Council was very impressed with the addresses from Bridget Smith and Sydney Tremain, from Yeoval Central School; Chanse Mclean and Ella Gruessing, from Canowindra High School; and Amy Wilson and Matt Beuzeville, from Molong Central School. Expanded library services at Molong, closed circuit television in the Canowindra CBD and upgraded sporting facilities at Yeoval were among the matters the students have asked Council to explore. These senior students are excellent ambassadors for their communities and Council will try as hard as possible to accommodate their requests. School Enrolments in Cabonne continue to grow, with the latest figures showing a 3.5% increase in the past two years. All 19 schools in the Shire provided a high standard of teaching, which is reflected in the enrolments. A total 1,823 students attended Cabonne primary and secondary schools at the end of 2017 - up from 1,762 in 2015. Nashdale Public School, Canowindra High School and Cudal, Mullion Creek and Clergate Public Schools had the biggest influx of new students. The Calibre of young people in Cabonne never ceases to amaze me and never is it more evident than when Council presents its Youth of the Month awards. In the past two months, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting three young people, Julia Stanley and William Wright, from Canowindra High School, and Jessica Burgess, from Molong, whose list of academic, community and sporting achievements is outstanding. This is one of Cabonne’s most valuable initiatives and with young leaders like Julia, William and Jessica, I’m certain our future is in good hands. If you know of a young person who fits the bill please don’t hesitate to nominate them for the Youth of Month Award by calling Council on 6392 3200.
THE 2018 CABONNE DAROO BUSINESS AWARDS
The Daroo Awards were launched last week and nominations are now being sought from customers and clients. A people’s choice format will decide the winners in most categories, so please nominate Cabonne businesses you feel are worthy of recognition. Nominations close on 30 June 2018 and forms are available at various points in Cabonne villages. Once all nominations are received, finalists will be determined in each category and an online voting process will open. The winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Eugowra on Friday 2 November 2018.

This strategy sets out a long-term vision for Cabonne, Orange and Blayney local government areas and has been adopted by Cabonne Council. Developed with the assistance of the NSW Government, the strategy builds on the region’s assets and resources to guide investment over the next four years. Cabonne Council are looking forward to implementing these strategies to capitalise on agricultural and mineral resources, industries, location, climate and lifestyle advantages. Health, aged care and education have been identified as three areas of future growth.

Three Tips For The Best Wedding Ever
Start your perfect day with a special Ceremony Weddings,Renewals &Baby Namings
Narelle Page
1. Use a Wedding App or Hashtag: There are many great wedding apps to choose from for your big day. Some interactive apps allow guests to upload wedding photos into one curated place, while others keep your friends and family up on any wedding-related news. Why not create a clever hashtag and ask guests to tag all of their photos using it. 2. Give Out-of-Town Guests a Welcome Basket: Whether you’re hosting a destination wedding or a hometown bash, to show your appreciation, give welcome bags for guests staying at hotels. Include a few snacks, bottles of water, and a list of local resources, restaurants and cafes, plus any nearby attractions. If you’re able to splurge, throw in a bottle of wine, tasty local treats like an artisan cheese or chocolate and a guidebook. 3. Create a Well-Planned Seating Chart: A smart seating chart is vital to ensuring your guests have a good time. Why not name each table with something to do with the Bride and Groom for fun!

A Positive Result
Rick Colless MLC, Nationals Candidate for Orange Yvette Quinn and Leader of the Nationals John Barilaro MP.
Yvette Quinn Chosen By Orange Nationals
A meeting of local party members in the Orange Electorate on Saturday 2nd June endorsed Yvette Quinn as The Nationals candidate for the 2019 election. “I’m deeply honoured by the faith the National Party has put in me today and look forward to working hard to win the trust of the Orange Electorate,” Ms Quinn said. “The real work begins now as I get out and about across the electorate.” The endorsement by the Orange Nationals will see her throw down the gauntlet to Shooters MP Phil Donato who won the seat by just 50 votes after receiving Labor preferences. Leader of The Nationals and Deputy Premier, John Barilaro said that Yvette was a fresh face and would inject energy into the campaign to take back the Central West. “She’s tenacious, hard-working and down to earth and will get straight to work on campaigning on the issues that matter most to the people of this electorate.”
“Her work as a mental health support worker has seen her on the front-lines looking after some of the most vulnerable in our community and it will put her in good stead.” Yvette wasted no time laying out her priorities. “I want to ensure we get the investment we need in the Central West – in health services, mental health support and improvements to our local roads,” she said. “We currently have a Government who has the ability and desire to invest in regional areas of NSW. We won’t be able to get our fair share with someone who isn’t at the decision making table,” she said. A Parkes local, Yvette currently works as a mental health support worker. Yvette has been an advisor to the Multicultural NSW Regional Advisory Council, and was previously on the NSW Youth Advisory Council. She has been heavily involved with the Orange Headspace Group, providing mental health support to young people.

The general consensus was unanimous that this should happen, the question being should it happen under its own autonomy or under an existing organisation, and the outcome of discussions was that this be formed as part of the Canowindra Business Chamber. Mr Graeme Beasley, President of the Chamber, stated that the Chamber would have to investigate the viability of forming a united community committee under its Constitution, and the possibility of incorporating a change of name and insuring a larger and broader membership base and that he would set the wheels in motion to obtain answers for the next meeting of the Chamber. I arranged this Meeting with the community, because I believe there was an opportunity to improve communications between the many wonderful community organisations, I believe that when we all work together and help each other the outcomes would benefit all of Canowindra. The next meeting of the Business Chamber will be a breakfast meeting to commence at 8am on Wednesday 20th June 2018 at “Délice” (Green/Cream Shed), so I urge all Committees and Organisations to please send a representative along so the process can start, or send your contact details so that the Chamber can include them on a list and keep you in the discussion. As far as I’m concerned we live in the beautiful valley and town of Canowindra, and I know that everyone is proud of what is achieved by this hard working community, so please let us all work together and secure our future. The National Redress Scheme
Recent media reports confirm that a National Redress scheme for people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse will soon be up and running. The establishment of the Scheme was recommended by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Subject to the passage of legislation, the Scheme will start on 1 July 2018, and will run for 10 years. The scheme is designed so that relevant organisations can make amends for sexual abuse that happened to children they were caring for. The scheme will be funded by governments and nongovernment institutions. So far, the Commonwealth Government, the governments of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory have all committed to join the Scheme. As well as private institutions including the Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts and the YMCA. The Redress Scheme will provide to victim’s access to psychological counselling; if desired a direct personal response such as an apology from the responsible institution; and a monetary payment. Payments will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, reflecting the severity and impact of the abuse experienced with a maximum payment of $150,000. The National Redress Scheme will be an alternative to seeking compensation through the courts. However, victims will still be able to obtain justice via the court, either one or the other, but not both. To qualify for the scheme the person will have to have experienced sexual abuse; experienced the abuse in an institution that is part of the scheme; and have experienced the abuse when under the age of 18. If you need further information regarding compensation call Geoff Yeo at Peacockes Solicitors on 0448 673 924.

CANOWINDRA TIGERS
Round 9 of the Woodbridge Cup clash against Eugowra didn't disappoint with the game resulting in a 18 all draw. The Tigers lead with 4 minutes left on the clock, with everyone feeling the pressure of the moment including players and game officials. In the closing minute of the game Eugowra went the blindside from a scrum and
