A New Era For Garden And Montgomerie In Canowindra
Last Wednesday evening over 60 people joined the Garden and Montgomerie team at their new premises on Gaskill St. Garden and Montgomerie purchased the old NAB Building at the end of last year after the banks sudden closure. The transformation from the old bank to this new 21st century office is amazing! The fresh coat of paint and new furniture and furnishings have really brought this old building back to life. You can even enter the old bank safe and read notes on the ceiling from past bank employees. Current and past clients of Garden and Montgomerie and members of the Canowindra community mingled well into the evening with lovely food catered by Tommy Jeffs of Montrose House. Grant Chamberlain, Principal spoke
on the evening “I would like to welcome everyone to the new premises, I am very proud of the new building as it is certainly a step up on the last office that had never changed since about the 1950’s!” “I would like to thank Rosa, the Project Manager who has co-ordinated the renovation and Lachlan Patterson, Associate Solicitor for his muscle and strength in demolishing walls and taking trailer loads of rubbish away,” said Grant. Garden and Montgomerie have served the Canowindra community for more than 40 years and are excited to welcome you into the new premises. The new office will be open Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 11.30am – 4.30pm.

Recently my wife and I (Dot and Les Pfeiffer) were blessed to enjoy a nine day trip through Central Australia. We flew to Darwin and hired a vehicle and travelled south on the Sturt Highway. During the next nine days we travelled to Uluru. Some of the highlights of the trip were; a visit to the war cemetry at Adelaide River this is a very well kept area and contains lots of history about the Second World War. Adelaide River had lots of troops there and a one hundred bed hospital during the Japanese attack on Darwin. There were 64 bombing raids killing 230 persons and sinking 8 ships in the Darwin Harbour. We enjoyed a cruise on Katherine Gorge with it’s beautiful coloured rock faces. A visit to the Devils Marbles was interesting with it’s huge rocks. We also visited a big watermelon farm. Great to see Simpsons Gap, near Alice Springs travelling on we could see Mt Connor in the distance.

Then Uluru and the Olgas came into view. Visiting the rock to see the colour change at sunset was an experience. It looked a lot steeper than when we climbed it in 1984. Next came a visit to Kings Canyon, an amazing place. Tourism is a big industry at Uluru with hundreds of tourists coming and going. We were pleased to see the cooperation between white people and the indigenous people. In most towns there are Acadamy Cafes where young indigenous people are being trained in hospitiality. Taylah’s Week At The Phoenix
For those of you who are unsure, I spent my last week at the Canowindra Phoenix for my Year 10 work experience. Working for the Canowindra Phoenix was a great learning experience. It helped me understand and appreciate how much work really goes into the free community newspaper each week. The highlight of my eventful week was the laughs shared around the office. Not only did I find a new appreciation for the industry and how much work is put into each week’s paper, I had a fun time helping out where I could and was always eager to start a new task. Everybody I met whilst working, were the most understanding and friendly people and I am extremely grateful I had the opportunity to work with each of them. Some of the work I was involved in included printing, proof reading and editing, social media posting to Facebook and Instagram and bundling and stacking the newspapers ready for delivery. I also walked along the Main Street to search for “Our Bloke” and ask the community the “Question of the Week”. Although the printing day left me with many paper cuts, I enjoyed every moment. I’d like to thank all the ladies who helped me have a better understanding of the work place. I’m glad to say I learned a lot during my time here. Overall, I am thankful for my experience and could not have been happier with my week. By Taylah Cahill

World President To Address CWA The Canowindra CWA is delighted that World President of the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), Ruth Shanks, will address their July meeting. Everyone is invited to attend what will be a fascinating address. Mrs Shanks is a member of the CWA Dubbo Evening Branch and became World President in 2013. Ruth Shanks has valuable insight into country and regional life through ‘living the experience’ and is willing to put herself ‘out there’ for the betterment of life in Australia. Mrs Shanks received a Member of the Or-
der of Australia (AM) in the 2006 Australia Day honours for her service to people in rural areas particularly through the Country Women’s Association of New South Wales, and to the community of Dubbo. In 2007, Mrs Shanks became the ACWW South Pacific Area President, a role she has held until the recent ACWW conference (September 2013). During her time in this role she has visited ACWW projects in Papa New Guinea, East Timor, Tuvalu and Tonga. She was also CWA State President for three years. The Associated Country Women of the
World was formed in 1933 to bring all rural women’s organisations together with an aim of futhering international cooperation. Today ACWW works in partnership with it’s members and member societies, offering mutual support, friendship and practical help to women and communities around the world. ACWW has over 460 member societies active in over 70 countries. If you would like to come along to hear Mrs Shanks speak, please do so on Thursday 26 July, 2018 at 6:30pm for 7pm in the CWA Hall. Canowindra Tigers Juniors Say Thanks Canowindra Tigers Junior Rugby League Club would like to thank the sponsors for the 2017/2018 season. For the most part, teams have been sponsored by the same businesses for years. This is a tradition that speaks volumes for both the local businesses and the people that run them. The club would struggle without this support. The money that they give Canowindra Junior Rugby League goes towards paying for jerseys for two seasons. At the end of the season, these are then given to the players as a keep sake of their glory days playing for the Tigers. This also allows parents to get kids into a sport as cheap as possible, given that they have to pay for boots, headgear and travel to get them to games each weekend. The committee, the parents and most importantly, the kids are grateful. The club committee wants to ensure that these local businesses get the recognition for their contribution because they are buying the kids of our community a chance to play a sport that they love in their own community that is steeped in tradition. Mayor Welcomes Big Jump In Central West Tourism Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty has welcomed a big increase in Central West tourism during the past year, describing it as great news for Cabonne. The latest figures released by Destination NSW show overnight visitation in the Central West jumped by 21.2% to the end of December last year, with 2.5 million people staying in the region, and those visitors spent $970 million, an increase of 17%. “By comparison, overnight visitation in the Hunter was up by 8.7% and the Blue Mountains 7.7% so our Central West tourism operators, organisations and staff must be doing something right,” Cr Beatty said. International overnight visitors spent $33m in the Central West which is up 25.6% from the previous year. Cr Beatty said an integral part of Cabonne’s Tourism Plan was to work on a regional basis with Destination NSW, Orange Region Tourism and the Central Regional Organisation of Councils through Central NSW Tourism to bring people to the area and then encourage them to visit Cabonne’s towns and villages. “Any additional tourists means more people are enjoying Cabonne’s wonderful food and wine products, natural attractions and quaint villages and that provides a big boost to our local economies,” he said. “This region has worked collaboratively on the Unearth tourism campaign and it’s great to see these united efforts paying dividends.”

Joice McNaught, Jeanette Wheeldon and Penny Nash defeated Daph Bryant, Ellen Petty and Gwen Haydon 25-16. One social pairs was played. We enjoyed a very tasty birthday lunch after bowls for all those members who had birthdays from January to June. President Betty Jenkins made a special sponge cake decorated with cream and strawberries for Jean Roth who celebrated her 80th birthday in May. Our AGM is being held on Tuesday 26th June. President Betty Jenkins would like to thank the members who worked on the Driver Reviver roster on Saturday, 9th June. CANOWINDRA TIGERS Canowindra Tigers had a very strong second-half to edge out the home team by one point winning 25 points to 24 against Cargo last weekend. The Tigers were very lethargic the first half and their intensity in defence wasn’t there and Cargo ran in four tries.
