Celia Klinger from the CWA Canowindra branch with a new design “Boomerang Bag” that the CWA ladies are making.
Plastic Free Canowindra
Local supermarkets in Canowindra will not be providing single use plastic bags for shoppers anymore to try and make Canowindra plastic free! To help the Canowindra community the local CWA Branch has enlisted in the War on Waste Challenge. The CWA Canowindra Branch has received a Netwaste 2018 Village Waste Reduction grant to assist them with the War on Waste. The grant will enable the Canowindra CWA to expand and develop its War on Waste activities. The War on Waste Canowindra has two main directions. CWA members have been making “Boomerang Bags” from donated material which members cut, iron and sew together. These unique reusable shopping and produce bags will be available for sale at local markets and other venues soon. The next sewing bee will be held this Sunday, 1 July from 10am at the CWA Hall
in Canowindra. Members of the general community are welcome to join in creating these very useful items. The second direction of the War on Waste is to encourage people to recycle soft plastics to keep it out of landfill. Some of the most common recycled items include Bread bags, biscuit packet wrappers, paper goods packaging, pasta and rice bags, frozen food and vegie bags and plastic bags. Soft plastics can be recycled now at Coles and Woolworths stores in Orange or Cowra in their REDCYCLE bins. The CWA will be placing special bins around Canowindra for the community to leave their collected soft plastics. Locations have not yet been finalised, but one will be at the CWA Hall in Blatchford St, Canowindra.

Dear Editor, Cara came in at 63 days old. She was cared for by a WIRES Raptor carer in Young until she was ready for flight practice at which time she was transferred to another WIRES Raptor carer in Albury. She was then returned for release back into the wild at a Caragabal property where she was originally discovered.

Her parents and a sibling were present at the time of release and she was 100% fit and ready to go! WIRES would like to thank the property owners for their quick response in containing Cara and notifying WIRES, who then transferred her to a licensed specialisttrained carer with the correct facilities. This prompt action went a long way to ensure her successful release. If you would like to be involved with caring for our wonderful native fauna and assisting them to return to the wild, WIRES Weddin Lachlan is holding a basic Rescue and Immediate Care course on 11th August in Cowra. WIRES rescues and rehabilitates all native fauna. Please register by emailing training@wires.org.au as there is an online theory component to complete prior to the practical workshop. Driver Reviver Needs Help! A little over thirty years ago the Lions Club of Cudal-Cargo and District began to operate a “Coffee Stop” on the first night of the long weekends at the Monument on the Escort Way/Parkes Rd intersection. At that time the “Coffee Stop” operated on the Friday night before the Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Queen’s Birthday and Labour Day long weekends. When the “Coffee Stop” began its operation it was decided not to compete with cafes in Cudal and Manildra and would therefore only operate from 6pm to 6am, a practice still followed today. The objective of the “Coffee Stop” then as is that of the Driver Reviver today, was to encourage drivers to stop for a free cup of coffee or tea, a biscuit and a few minutes rest from driving. A cuppa and a 15 minute break can make a big difference to a drivers fatigue levels. Since the “Coffee Stop” began to operate, the RMS has adopted the movement renaming it “Driver Reviver” and found sponsors to supply tea, coffee and biscuits so that the operating organisations were not out of pocket for the supplies. Over the past 30 years, the members from Cudal-Cargo have grown older, many have left and some have other commitments on those holiday weekends. The group are now finding it difficult to staff the van on operating nights. The more helpers the club can get the shorter the shifts in the van can be made and if enough new volunteers come forward the van may be able to operate on a number of other occasions. If you would like to help continue this vital service please contact Dave Farrell, Driver Reviver Co-ordinator on 0428 238 971.

Let The Experts Lighten Your Load Tax time can often be a difficult time of the year as you become overwhelmed with what to do. To be prepared this year set aside some specific time now to go over your paperwork and create a checklist. This will ensure you tick off all of your required jobs and are able to lodge before the rush. The Federal Government last week achieved another significant outcome in further delivering on plans to provide economic growth and job creation on which they were elected. Passing the $144 billion personal tax cut package represents the largest tax cut package in Australian history. This tax relief means regional Australians will have more money to spend at their local store. Small businesses will keep more of their hard earned profits to allow them to invest, grow and create more jobs.
Tax cuts lead to higher wages, economic growth and more jobs while fulfilling the Government’s commitment to helping families, small businesses and farmers. A lot of individuals become uncertain with what they can and can’t claim at tax time. The ATO website provides you with a clear and detailed list for claiming deductions such as home office expenses, self-education expenses, tools and equipment, clothing and dry cleaning, vehicle and travel as well as so much more. As a basic guide you can claim any cost you incur if it relates to your employment or is made for general income. There are also specific guides on the ATO website to guide you through this process. It can often be a very time consuming and frustrating time, so you can always reach out and ask the professionals such
as CKC Accountants, David Bigg Accountancy, Bennett Keogh & Associates, Baillie Simpson Chartered Accountants and ITP for advice. “With the federal governments announcement recently on the biggest tax cuts in Australian history, now is the perfect time to plan for tax,” said Joseph Cunial from CKC Accountants. “At ITP we maximise client returns with our main focus on customer service, being prompt and meeting our client’s needs. Be sure to get all of your paperwork organised with work related expenses, receipts and all income declared to make the process easier,” said Jim McNaught at ITP. “While planning for your end of Financial Year Income Tax is important, planning for your financial security is paramount and should be integrated with your Income Tax

objectives, current and future lifestyle goals,” says David Simpson of Baillie Simpson Chartered Accountants in Cowra. It’s important to collate all of your documents such as PAYG summaries, pension or government allowance, interest earned, rental property income, business income, work related expenditure, investment expenses, charity donations and private health insurance, just to name a few. Tax planning should be customised to individual needs, and should be undertaken with the assistance of an expert. When planning now you should certainly consider strategies available specifically for Small Business Entities, such as the immediate write off deductions for capital items, and bringing forward expenses into the 2018 financial year. Other tools to discuss with your accountant or advisor include the use of Superannuation Contributions as a deduction or Farm Management Deposits as a strategy. This time of year is also ideal for planning and forecasting for the new financial year. Professionals can refine the process of identifying both the goals and the concerns of clients, and work with them to map a plan for the coming years. This includes a cash flow forecast and projected Profit and Loss, and is ideally revisited regularly through the new financial year. Planning and measuring performance are essential for reaching your personal and business goals. The sooner you get in touch with the experts, the sooner you can lighten your load.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update
Tommy Jeffs from Montrose House dressing the windows at Foodworks for Christmas in July.
Get In The Christmas Spirit This July
With the frosty starts and white grass this week it really does look like a winter wonderland in and around Canowindra in the mornings. Christmas in July is a fun time in Canowindra with many events being held to celebrate the occasion. The Phoenix will once again in 2018 be hosting a Christmas in July Window Display Competition for the businesses in Canowindra. We are encouraging all businesses to dress their shops in Christmas themes for the month of July to bring our little village to life and attract new visitors to town. Tommy Jeffs from Montrose House has already started by dressing the front win-
dow of the Foodworks Supermarket with Christmas trees and decorations – and it looks great! So come on Canowindra dust off the tree and get decorating! This year the Phoenix will also run a Children’s Colouring in Competition so all the children of Canowindra can get involved – keep an eye out for it in next week’s Phoenix! This year the Window Displays will be judged by a panel and there will also be a People’s Choice winner so that the prizes can be shared around amongst the businesses. There will be great prizes on offer which will be revealed at a later date.
With just under 21,000 bales offered, this week was the smallest national offering in nine years. Prices maintained strength through to the close and the overall lift in values added further to an already successful 2017/18 final-quarter (Since Easter the market has lifted 300 cents with another week remaining). 18 through to 22 micron fleece attracted spirited competition as buyers fought for the limited quantity, driving prices as much as 80 cents higher. The ultra fine range also managed improvements but the gains were not as consistent on the back of a mixed quality selection. Merino Skirtings gained 20-30 cents while Merino Cardings stepped 20-30 cents higher. While the 30 to 32 micron range tracked sideways, persistent support for the finer Crossbred microns pushed the 26 and 28 Micron Price Guides into record territory (20 through to 28 microns are all now at records since 1979).

Improving Drought Support For Australian Farmers The Coalition Government will extend the Farm Household Allowance (FHA) from three to four years to help the nation’s farmers with a more effective drought support. Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud said the changes followed the drought listening tour with the Prime Minister a fortnight ago. “Farmers said extending FHA was a sensible measure which would help them, and we listened,” Minister Littleproud said. “The drought has been going on for seven years in parts of Queensland. While FHA is essentially an adjustment payment which comes with free financial counselling to help farmers restructure, four years is a more appropriate timeframe to do this.” “This extra time will give them more breathing space to implement plans to become financially self-sufficient so they are better placed to sustain their farming businesses.” “We will extend the period farmers and their partners will be able to receive FHA from three to four years through the Farm Household Support Amendment Bill 2018. I remind farmers not to self-assess whether they’re eligible for FHA – I fear many eligible families have not applied,” said Minister Littleproud. “We will also hold a drought roundtable in coming weeks with key farming stakeholders, including the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) and state farming groups. This roundtable will discuss long-term drought
policy and strategy in the context of building resilience and drought preparedness during a changing climate.” The Coalition Government already provides a range of support measures to assist farming families in hardship. These include FHA, the Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS) and Drought Assistance Concessional Loans. The Coalition Government also recently boosted funding of the Rural Financial Counselling Service to more than $70 million from 1 April 2016 to 30 June 2020. This will make sure the program keeps up with demand and will help farming communities to generate their own wealth and build strong, healthy livelihoods. $2 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR MSM MILLING BIOENERGY PROJECT MSM Milling in Manildra have received $2 million in federal funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to move into bioenergy. They will be one of the first large-scale food manufacturing companies in Australia to use biomass for thermal energy. MSM Milling will replace its current Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) steam boilers with a 4.88 MW biomass boiler, fuelled by locally and sustainably sourced wood chips. The $5.38 million project is an example of a largescale industrial company simultaneously reducing their energy costs and environmental impact through an innovative approach to the use of bioenergy. MSM Milling has done a huge amount of research into finding an energy source that is right for its business and there is significant potential for this project to be replicated, supporting opportunities for the industrial sector. MSM Milling currently exports to over 15 countries and employs about 75 people. I’m very pleased that the Federal Government is helping MSM Milling to stay internationally competitive through this initiative.
GOOD NEWS ON LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES There’s more good news on the employment front, with the national unemployment rate dropping to 5.4 per cent for the March quarter. Figures for the Cabonne Shire are well below the national average, sitting at 2.3 per cent.
Overall, the unemployment rate for the March quarter was 3.8 per cent for the Calare electorate, with the agriculture, manufacturing, retail, construction and health care industries some of our biggest local employers. These results indicate consistency and confidence in our economy, which is good news for the region. The Government’s role is to continue creating the right economic conditions so that businesses of all sizes can prosper, grow and hire more Australians.
INCOME TAX CUTS PASS PARLIAMENT The Australian Government’s Personal Income Tax plan passed through the Parliament last week, which will ensure all Australians paying tax will be better off. The plan will be delivered in three steps, with the first step providing immediate tax relief to low and middle income earners. In 2018-19 over 10 million taxpayers will get tax relief, with 4.4 million Australians receiving the full $530 benefit. This includes 61,118 taxpayers in Calare. The $530 rebate will be paid when tax returns are lodged. To build a strong economy, it is vital that workers are rewarded rather than penalised for their effort by our tax system.
BOLD AND DECISIVE ACTION NEEDED ON RISING POWER PRICES Over the last two weeks I have addressed Coalition MPs on the need to make bringing down power prices a top priority of the government. Individuals are hurting, families are hurting and so are regional businesses. I pointed out that high power prices are a jobs killer in country Australia. I also pointed out that the debate on energy policy can’t just be taking place in the bubble of Canberra between bureaucrats and politicians. It needs to include real Australians who have made it very clear that they want real solutions and not just talk.
Andrew with MSM Milling Director Pete Mac Smith, Brad Williams from ARENA, Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty, Cabonne Council Environmental Services Director Heather Nicholls, Nino Di Falco from the EPA and MSM Milling Director Bob Mac Smith.
SUPPORTING OUR FARMERS DURING DROUGHT During recent Parliamentary sitting weeks, I have addressed the Coalition Party Room, including the Prime Minister, on the need to be ramping up our drought support as conditions worsen. This is not the first time I have spoken on the need to be supporting our farmers in drought and boosting drought support. I was therefore pleased to see the Prime Minister visiting drought affected areas and meeting with farmers recently. It's important that he sees what's happening first-hand. There are currently a range of Federal measures in place to assist farmers, including the Farm Business Concessional Loans Scheme, the Managing Farm Risk Program, the Rural Financial Counselling Service, support to manage pests and weeds in drought-affected areas, and the Farm Household Allowance (FHA) scheme. The FHA scheme provides couples with just under $1,000 per fortnight, or between $530-580 for singles, to put food on table and diesel in the ute when they have no income. Just last week, the Government announced that the scheme would be extended for another year, from three to four years. Farmers in need are encouraged not to self-assess and to contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593 and the Rural Financial Counselling Service on 1800 686 175 for further information. All levels of government have a role to play in supporting our farmers and we all need to be working together. I have been speaking with many farmers in recent times to find out how they're travelling and what further support they need. I will continue to take these issues back to government. In the meantime, let's hope we get decent rain.

Moyne Community Fete Success The 2018 Moyne Community Fete in Canowindra, was a huge success, attracting over 500 people and raising $6,500 for elderly residents. This event is celebrated by the local community, and of course the staff, officers and elderly residents at the Moyne Aged Care facility. Each year, various stalls attract huge crowds from the community. This year stalls featured plants, fresh vegetables, trash and treasure items, furniture, barbeque, arts and craft, second-hand clothing and shoes, books, and home-made baked goods such as lamingtons, jams, relish, slices and cupcakes. Entertainment on the day included performances from local singer Janelle Willis from Stacey's Singing School, the children from Alikinetic Dance Canowindra, and The Salvation Army Band from Orange. Also on display were antique vehicles from Cowra Car Club which attracted attention from the crowd as they passed through the event. Melissa Delaney, Recreational Activities Officer for Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre said that after months of preparation, they credit much of their success to the support from the local Canowindra community. “A special thanks goes to Mr Bruce Wright and Mr Steve Flannery for organising the fresh vegetables that were donated by local vegetable growers. Also, thanks to the ladies from Cowra Home Leagues, who kindly donated many of the items on the home-made baked goods stall, and to Major Cathryn Williamson for her craft donations and contributions to the cake stall. Thank you also to the Canowindra Lions Club who cooked up a lovely barbeque. They did a wonderful job, as always.” Melissa said that the funds raised were only made possible because of the generosity of the people who attended the fete, as well as local, regional and interstate businesses who made donations.

COMPUTERBytes There have been a few people still struggling with Windows XP which is now officially a very dead operating system (OS). It is strongly recommended that you don’t use old OS’s such as XP, Vista, or Windows 8.0 on the internet. Besides running a great risk of picking up some nasty virus’ and trojans that can damage your system it also allows hackers to use your PC to attack other PC’s on the World Wide Web (WWW). If you can update your PC with Windows 10 then you should consider doing so. However, many older PC’s cannot run Windows 10 efficiently so a replacement may be required. If you are running Windows 8.0 then you can easily upgrade to Windows 10! Many new PC’s and laptops are being designed to not even operate with Windows 7 as it is ending its lifecycle with Microsoft. It is starting to become unstable. By Chris Gregory

It’s coming up to pruning time again for your roses and other deciduous shrubs and trees in the garden. Roses definitely benefit from a winter prune. You’ll get more branching, fresher, healthier growth and ultimately better flowering next spring and summer if you give them a prune in July or August. Some gardeners I know are quite ruthless in pruning their roses back about 50% with a chainsaw or mechanical pruner. Most of us are bit more careful and use good sharp secateurs to remove any dead stems, spindly growth and reduce overall bush size by about a third. I attempt to create a balanced bush with inwards and outwards facing branches. It’s best to cut stems on a 45 degree angle, just above a new, outward facing bud. If you have had serious black spot or other fungal disease in your roses during the last growing season, give the pruned plant a spray with lime sulphur and take all prunings and old leaves away and put in the garbage (not in your compost heap). Other plants to prune in winter are hydrangeas (remove stems that flowered earlier this year), grape vines and ornamental climbing plants such as clematis. Deciduous fruit trees such as peaches, nectarines and figs can also be given a tidy-up prune now too. The general theme with these is to aim for a vase shaped tree with minimal inward facing branches. Keeping these trees to a small to medium size makes them easier to pick fruit from and also easier to cover with netting to reduce bird damage to fruit. Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

CANOWINDRA SPORT
The Canowindra Pythonetties trained last Friday night with Crazy Hair and Socks.
CANOWINDRA PYTHONS On Saturday the Pythons travelled to Temora to take on the top of the table Tuskers. With a full team on the park the Pythons started strong with John Grant crossing the line in the opening five minutes and Tom Roth converting gave the Pythons a lot of confidence. With a lot of players playing out of their normal positions it was pleasing to see that the boys stayed strong with wave after wave of attack from a strong Temora outfit. After the twentieth minute the Tuskers finally crossed the line after a few penalties going their way to even up the score. After some massive defence from the likes of James Wolters, Dan Bowd, Kenny Turnbull and Rob McInnes the Pythons soon turned defence into attack and John found some open space and crossed under the sticks again to give the Pythons the lead 14-12 with only a couple of minutes until half time. Unfortunately Temora scored out wide on the bell to give them the advantage going into half time. After half time the Pythons were slow to get going and let three easy tries in the opening 10 minutes to let the score blow out. Once the oranges kicked in the boys were on a mission to at least come away with the 4 try bonus point and went back to how they played the first half and were brutal in defence, with Ed Price and Craig McKenzie making some good runs. To the Pythons credit they scored two more tries through Ed Price and one to Rob McInnes. Final score was 41-26 to Temora who played the game in great spirit and deserved the win. Points for the day went to 3 points and Players Player to James Wolters. 2 points to Jason Beveridge who played his best
