New Amenities An Election Promise For Canowindra Showground
If the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government is re-elected this Saturday 18th May 2019 they will invest $250,000 to construct three new amenities blocks at the Canowindra Showground to cater for the town’s bustling tourism industry. Federal member for Calare Andrew Gee was joined by Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack in Canowindra last Thursday to make the announcement. “The current amenities at the Showground are in dire need of replacement, having been constructed in the 1940’s. At the moment, visitors have to use facilities which are well past their use-by-date and a bit rough in bad weather,” said Mr Gee. “The new amenities will be much appreciated by sporting groups, community organisations and local visitors, especially those that flock here for the annual Canowindra
International Balloon Challenge,” continued Mr Gee. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the funding will allow the Canowindra Showground Trust to demolish the current amenity block to make way for new amenities, which will also add a number of showers and disabled access. “Showgrounds are the social hubs of many country towns and the additions announced here today will give the Canowindra Showground a new lease on life,” said Mr McCormack. “This is a great announcement and we are very excited. This is going to go towards attracting new visitors to Canowindra, I congratulate the government on their support to regional and remote areas in Australia such as Canowindra,” said Geoff Beath, President of the Canowindra Showground Trust.

I would like to extend a big thank you to the knitters in the “Wrap with Love” group who have managed to send 12 rugs to Orange and display a further 8 in the HACC Window in Gaskill St. Each of these rugs are beautiful and will give pleasure and warmth to whoever receives one. I would also like to thank those who have donated wool. We need 8 ply acrylic yarn and would appreciate any further donations so we can continue knitting. Many knitters also buy their own wool. A big thanks to all knitters and welcome to our new members. Our next meeting is on Thursday 23rd May at 10am at the HACC office in Gaskill St. Hope to see some new knitters there. Nina Kallas

Cabonne’s Commitment To Road Safety
Two Cabonne bridges are scheduled to be replaced at a total cost of more than $2.6 million following partial funding from the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program. Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty has welcomed a grant of $700,000 for the reconstruction of Bangaroo Bridge, which links Cabonne and Cowra Shires over the Belubula River near Canowindra, and $644,500 for St Germains Bridge on Bocobra Road near Manildra. Work on Bangaroo Bridge is expected to cost more than $1.5m, while just under $1.3m has been allocated for St Germains Bridge. Cr Beatty said the new bridges would enhance the safety of road users, which was a priority for Cabonne Council. “Both projects are key parts of a $21.5m capital works program, which is the centrepiece of Cabonne Council’s draft Budget for 2019-20,” he said. Cr Beatty said Cabonne Council would work closely with Cowra Council on the replacement of Bangaroo Bridge, which has been closed since March when inspections revealed damage to the structural integrity of the bridge. As well as being a link between the two shires, Bangaroo Bridge provides access between Gooloogong, Canowindra and Billimari for a number of rural residents. An alternative crossing of the Belubula River is available via Settlement Bridge Road until the new bridge is completed.

Local CWA Members Attend Conference In Albury
The CWA is more than just tea and scones which is always evident during the robust discussion around the different motions presented at the annual conference. Last week a number of local CWA members attended the annual conference and AGM in Albury. Two important issues raised this year were the concern the Inland Rail may cause flooding to properties along the proposed route and the quality of water available for towns during this extended drought. Once a motion is passed at a conference it enables the CWA of NSW to lobby the government on these issues. The CWA Drought Relief Aid has been able to assist several hundred families to cover the cost of day to day expenses, with Scott Morrison pledging $5,000,000 to the fund. Assistance is available through www.cwaofnsw.org.au or speak to a local member and they will be happy to help. The Prime Minister Scott Morrison was a surprise visitor to this year’s conference. Jan Kerr, President of the Canowindra CWA and CWA Central Western Group, took the opportunity to speak to him about the need for upgraded infrastructure for the Canowindra Showground. Calling All Tourism Putting Profit Back Based Businesses Into Farming The Regional Tourism Awards are held annually to acknowledge excellence in tourism in regional NSW. In 2019, the Regional Tourism Awards are open to operators in all six NSW Destination Networks: Country & Outback, North Coast, Riverina Murray, Southern NSW, Sydney Surrounds North and Sydney Surrounds South. Victorian businesses in the area covered by Murray Regional Tourism may also enter the Regional Tourism Awards, and will be considered as part of the Country & Outback and Riverina Murray program. The Awards commenced in 2004 (originally known as the Inland NSW Tourism Awards - INTA) to evolve into a major tourism industry event for regional New South Wales. The Regional Tourism Awards provide tourism organisations and individuals the opportunity to gain an insight into their industry, their business, achieve recognition for their success and promote tourism within their region. One of the main focus points of the awards is to develop quality regional tourism products and provide businesses the opportunity to benchmark their business with similar businesses in activity and size and also have the opportunity to identify their own personal and professional development within the tourism industry. Entrants are made up of tourism businesses, events, marketing organisations, clubs and individuals all aiming for excellence in their industry. NSW-based winners of the Regional Tourism Awards gain finalists status upon entering the NSW State Tourism Awards, and if successful, go onto the National Tourism Awards. Entries close on 24th May 2019. For more information or help with your entry head to www.regionaltourismawards.com.au
Farmers and graziers from across New South Wales and Queensland will convene in Orange next month for RCS’s flagship Farming and Grazing for Profit School. Famers attending the school are looking forward to a jam-packed seven days of personal and business development with a focus on building profitability, regenerating soil and landscapes and improving the communication and health of those running the farm. RCS founder and industry innovator, Terry McCosker says the course brings together land management, business, technology and family to help farmers work in sync with their resources. “Nothing in business or nature happens in isolation, which is why the whole-of-business approach we take at our schools is so effective. Graduates walk away understanding the importance of the interconnections and how to leverage them for maximum benefit,” said Mr McCosker. This powerful seven-day school is designed for farmers serious about building profitable businesses, resilient landscapes and healthy, happy relationships. “The best culmination of business, ecology and people management that I have ever been exposed to. Oh, and there was a bit on grazing as well!” said Phillip a past graduate of the program from Forbes. Registrations are still open for famers wanting to take advantage of the school being held in Orange from 12-18th June and Dubbo from 11-17th September. Funding is available for eligible NSW landholders through the NSWRAA Farm Business Skills Professional Development Program. Call 1800 356 004, email info@rcsaustralia.com.au or visit www.rcsaustralia. com.au for more information.

Over A Decade In The Making $1.56M For Eugowra Flood Levee
The NSW Government and Cabonne Council will spend more than $2.3 million to complete a levee bank to help alleviate flooding in Eugowra. After many years of lobbying by the Eugowra community and Cabonne Council, the Government has announced more than $1.56m for the work. Cabonne Council will spend a further $800,000 to fill a one-kilometre gap in the Puzzle Flat Creek levee to help prevent floodwater entering the eastern section of Eugowra. Cabonne Mayor Keven Beatty welcomed the Government grant, saying it was the culmination of a long and passionate campaign by the community, particularly longstanding resident Bruce Noble.
“This work will complete the Puzzle Flat Creek levee, helping to retain flood water within the channel of the creek and divert it around the town,” he said. “It comes after a number of studies over the past decade, including a flood plain management review, floodwater modelling by experts, geotechnical evaluations and extensive design work.” Cr Beatty said the Puzzle Creek Flood levee was one of a number of major Cabonne projects to receive substantial funding from the NSW Government in the past year. “During the past 12 months, the Government has allocated more than $10m to projects in Cabonne, which is a tremendous investment in our Shire’s future,” he said.

May is Macula Month May is Macula Month, and a good reminder that if you are over 50 you should have regular macula health checks. The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina that deals with fine detail. A healthy macula is vital for good vision. Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease affecting the macula causing central vision loss making it difficult to read, recognise faces, watch TV and even obtain a driver’s license. MD is the leading cause of blindness in Australia. It is more common as we age, and the risk increases if there is a family history of macula problems or of smoking. At Hansen Eyecare Plus Parkes we have the gold standard equipment, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to help detect MD as early as possible. Ring or call in for an appointment.

The Kings Of Country Return To Australia Direct from the USA and after sell out shows in North America, Abstract Entertainment is proud to announce the return of The Kings of Country tour – playing at Dubbo Regional Theatre on Wednesday 29th May 2019 bringing back the music of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and John Denver. Phillip Bauer as Johnny Cash has been recreating the sound and the look since 1985. This with Phillip’s uncanny natural resemblance and his stage presence leaves his audiences spellbound as he recreates the era of Jackson, Folsom Prison Blues and all the songs that made Johnny Cash the King of Country music. Michael Moore as the outlaw Willie Nelson is the World’s leading Willie Tribute artist. Identifying with his music and style from an early age, Michael developed an affinity with Willie that has led to a lifelong career as a tribute performer and has seen him travel the world performing songs such as On The Road Again, Always On My Mind and To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before. Ted Vigil as John Denver has just been awarded the Rising legend award by the American Country Music Association. He is an accomplished drummer and singer but has made a career performing as John Denver. He has been asked to perform at John Denver’s own Windstar Foundation on two occasions – a unique honour for the Denver fan and tribute artist. Audiences will hear the songs we most remember – Take Me Home, Country Road, Annie’s Song, Thank God I’m A Country Boy and so many more. The Kings of Country show is a unique opportunity to experience the music of three amazing artists in one night. For tickets head to www.abstractentertainment.net

Hello Readers welcome to this month’s column. April was so busy I couldn’t even get a column done with Easter Weekend, Balloon Week and Anzac Day all busy with the house full. I went to the Bathurst Races on Anzac Day and won best dressed so was very pleased. Mike and Joy Bonnor from Cowra celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a formal ‘Downton Abbey’ themed dinner on 20th April with their family. It was a beautiful night and everyone looked fabulous. The Patterson family stayed in four rooms at Montrose House and were a joy to have here, loved the whole festival feeling with lots of visitors around town. May 4th was the Boorowa Picnic Races where I won Classic Gentleman so I was very pleased with that. On Saturday 11th May the Buchanan family from Dubbo booked me out and hosted a black tie dinner for an intimate group of family and friends. It was a retro dinner of delicious canapes, beef wellington and a Bombe Alaska to finish which set the fire alarms off when I poured the flaming brandy over the top haha. Sunday 12th May was a full house for my Mother’s Day luncheon with lots of people from Cowra, Forbes and Orange. The house was dressed floral themed throughout to match the theme around town. At 3pm I MC’d the fashion parade held at Finns Store which was a full house of really happy, fun people enjoying the fashion and frolics. I was a bit naughty and played up to the crowds, even putting on one of the outfits with a cone light shade!!! I have to say I am very proud of the way the town came together for the ‘Floral Themed’ Mother’s Day. Huge congratulations to Matty and the Chocolate Shop for the fabulous photos and promotion of the town and the way the shops came on board and dressed their windows. My three favs were Rockstar, the Phoenix and the Pharmacy. We need to keep the momentum going, it makes our town stronger and happier and brings lots of visitors to town. Take Care, love Tommy x

CANOWINDRA PYTHONS With a chilly Saturday it was a great day for rugby and to host our annual Ladies Day, thank you to all involved in making this day a success. It was a close game between Canowindra-Cowra and Wellington with the girls playing extremely well. The girls were helpful giving Wellington some pointers along the way. With princess getting tackled (head high) on two separate occasions the ref had enough and sent two Wellington players off with yellow cards. Wellington were just too quick and once they got through there was no catching them. The Canowindra-Cowra girls went down 29-12 with tries scored by Amy and Ash and conversion by Tarcia. This week the girls take on City on Cowra home soil at 12:45pm. The men’s side had a home game to Wellington. With a very fast game Wellington was just too strong winning 31-0. 3 points went to Lachie Davis, 2 points and players player to Lachie Sharp and 1 point each to Daniel Cheney and James Wolters. This week the men have a bye with Coonabarabran pulling out of the competition. By Adelaide Lawrence
