Bushranger Food And Wine Adventure

Last Saturday Silver Compass Tours partnered with Blind Freddy’s Bushranger Tours to take guests on a food and wine adventure with a historic bushranger twist. The tour took people back in time and to the actual locations where the likes of Ben Hall, Frank Gardiner, O’Mealley and Johnny Gilbert roamed during the gold rush era of the 1860s. Attendees travelled from across the Calare region to attend the event, which showcased the history of Canowindra and highlighted local businesses. The day consisted of a guided walking tour through Canowindra; a visit to the Ben

Hall gang's Bald Hill lookout, where guests enjoyed an organic tasting from Wallington Wines ‘Bald Hill’ collection. Margaret Wallington commented on the event, “These tours bring excellent tourism to small towns and is great for our economic growth.” The tour then went over to the Escort Rock at Eugowra and was followed by drinks and a long lunch at Finns Old Store. Owner of Blind Freddy’s Bushranger Tours, Craig Lawler, is an expert with bushranger history and he ‘brings the tales to life’ through these ‘bespoke’ tours. Continued on page 4

Hello to all at Canowindra hope all are well as we are. First just backtrack to the history HMAS Sydney 11 memorial at Geraldton which remembers the sinking of the ship by the German ship Kormoran in November 1941. The central point is a dome with 645 seagulls on it representing each soul lost at sea. A pool of remembrance marking final position, a wall with all names listed and a statue of a lady looking out to sea seeking those lost at sea. A short stay at port town Dampier home of the Red Dog made famous in books and movie. We then arrived at Port Hedland for a week’s stay. Port Hedland has everything big, especially the ports which cater for large ships loading iron ore. Very big long trains carrying ore and big quad road trains. At the jetty we counted 25 ships lying in wait to load. We travelled on to Marble Bar, the hottest town in Australia. We visited an old goldmine site and the Marble Bar Pool which you can see not marble but that it is actually a mineral called Jasper. Had a drink at

the famous Marble Bar Iron Clad Pub. A lot of old history there. Onward to Broome, we have been here a couple of weeks and again a port town with ships in and out, a lot of Ammonium Nitrate comes in here for use in explosives in the mining industry also some medium size cruise ships. Big tidal movements here from 1 metre to 9.7 metres making fishing a bit awkward but we are having a go. Here for another week and yet to visit the local history museum and view the big planes at the airport which also hosts a fleet of border security helicopters. Until next time… Regards, Allan and Debbie Symons

LITTLE SAINTS….The St Edward’s Primary School Kinder Orientation Program “Little Saint’s” will commence in Term 3.

Is Your Child Starting Kindergarten In 2020?

Continued from page 1 Craig is very passionate about the local history of the Calare region, “We don’t have enough historic tourism in New South Wales. So it is amazing that we are able to delve into history right here in the thick of the Central West.” Organiser of the Silver Compass Tour, Kelly Picarazzi voiced that she has a true passion for showcasing these little towns as you can find ‘quite a lot of hidden gems.’ This was the first event where Silver Compass and Blind Freddy’s Bushranger Tours partnered together. They hope to continue working together to create more tailored packages for guests to explore the history and culture of the Central West. By Kate Kiernan

St Edward’s Primary School Canowindra will be opening its doors on Friday 21st June for community members, interested local families, preschool families, parents and grandparents to have a look at the facilities and resources on offer in the modern classroom environments. St Edward’s is currently taking enquiries and enrolments for the Kinder class for 2020. The school are also planning the ‘Little Saint’s’ Kindergarten Orientation Program set to commence during Term 3. St Edward’s Primary School have recently had renovations within the school and would love to share them with the Canowindra and surrounding communities. The school is looking forward to sharing with visitors strategies they use to assist students to develop their literacy and numeracy skills, the use of technology devices to enhance and engage learning, and the involvement of students in special lessons such as robotics, music, gym and creative play. The morning will run from 10am to 11am and include a tour of the school and morning tea. Future students will be able to check out the state-of-the-art classrooms, play in the amazing gross motor room and even participate in a lesson in the Kinder room. ONE LIBRARY ONE BOOK….Canowindra Librarian Rossanne Holmes with the book The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone by Felicity McLean.

One Library One Book

Felicity McLean’s book The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone has been chosen for an innovative program in the Central West that takes the traditional book club concept to the next level. Named One Library One Book, the program aims to have everyone in the region read and discuss the same book. Central West Libraries will distribute 200 copies of The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone across the Central West Libraries footprint – Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes and Orange. These copies have been added to the catalogues of the Library’s branches with the rest distributed throughout regional towns for the community to take, read and pass on. Author Felicity McLean will be a guest speaker at the Orange Readers and Writers Festival on Saturday 3rd August at the Hotel Canobolas to talk about her book. Felicity will also be attending local libraries to meet with readers in the first week of August to discuss the book with audiences. “I’m thrilled The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone has been chosen for the One Library, One

Book initiative,” Felicity said. “It’s a fantastic program, in a special part of the world, and I’m grateful to everyone involved for encouraging reading throughout the community,” she said. “The One Library, One Book program takes the idea of a book club and expands it to cover an entire region,” Jan Richards, Central West Libraries Manager said. “The book is blackly comic, sharply observed and wonderfully endearing. We think it will resonate with the community and reflect connections our library service has with local organisations.” “We are thrilled to bring this book to readers of the Central West. It is also available via ebook and audiobook through Central West Libraries,” she said. It is hoped One Library One Book will be widely embraced on social media with readers of The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone posting discussions about the book and photos of themselves with the book on the Central West Libraries Facebook page and using #onelibraryonebook.

We put the call out to Canowindra to submit items of interest for our new column Way Back When…here is our first submission from Dorothy Balcomb from Canowindra Historical Society. In 1900, the first Canowindra P A & H Society was formed. By 1902 Mr T J Finn was Show President and tenders were called in December 1902 by Bathurst Architect, John Job Copeman, for building a pavilion at the Showground. It was duly built, see photo above. This was the first of many later buildings in Canowindra designed by J J Copeman. In 1975 funds were granted under the RED Scheme, a government employment scheme, for major improvements to the Showground. Amid controversy, the old pavilion was demolished on the grounds that it blocked the view of the finishing post for trotting races. Sadly, RED funds ran out and some new buildings had to be completed by local fundraising or not completed at all, such as the concrete pillars at the main entrance.
