Blue Bowerbird Wins Christmas In July Competition!

Fairy lights, Christmas trees, reindeers, snowflakes, Santa’s and even an open fireplace with stockings were just some of the Christmas items on display for the annual Christmas in July Window Display Competition that has been running for the month of July in Canowindra. The Canowindra Phoenix hosts the event each year and encourages local businesses to get involved and decorate their shop windows to help drive visitors to our Village. Once again The Canowindra Phoenix Christmas in July Window Display Competition was proudly supported by Cabonne Council under the Events Assistance Program. Cabonne Council has proudly donated the prizes to the winning businesses and we thank them for their continued support! “It was so great to see over 15 busi-

nesses along Gaskill St get involved this year, it really brightens up the town during winter and brings in visitors from as far as Canberra which is a great boost to the local businesses,” said Sarah Maynard, Publisher of The Phoenix Group of Newspapers. Many visitors to town have commented on how great the windows looked especially at night time when all the fairy lights are on. Judging took place last Wednesday with the Phoenix team of Sarah and Roselea and Cabonne Councillor Cheryl Newsom helping out. The winner was The Blue Bowerbird for their entertaining window, Debbie Rice at Canowindra Newsagency took out 2nd place and Debbie Guihot from The Plague and I won the People’s Choice Award on votes.

To the Editor,

A good day to all.

Following the Wrap With Love July meeting we were able to send another seven wraps to Orange. This brings the total this year so far to 49. We also welcomed two new members and would like to thank those who have kindly donated wool over the past month. We really appreciate these donations as they allow our knitters to create wonderful colourful rugs, some of which are displayed in the HACC Office window. Our next meeting is on Thursday 22nd August, so gather your knitting needles and come along or knit at home and send us your 25cm squares and we will sew them together with others we have donated. Nina Kallas On behalf of the Canowindra Knitters

We are going good but had a few problems when coming down from Cape York. Day one 400kms to Arthur River all good, day two 410kms to Palmer River but alas 70 kms in we broke a front stub axle on the driver side front dual axle. Chocked up with chunk of red gum and over 2 days travelled 940kms to Townsville into the caravan repair business to get 2 new axles and bearings. Meanwhile Deb spots a 2016 New Age Big Red 25 foot van, so all in all we bought it and swapped all gear over then sat down for a couple of days. Too busy for fishing and by Friday went down to Mackay for 2 days. Sunday 4th we came down through Rockhampton to the Silver Wattle Van Park at Mount Morgan to meet up with brother Ray from Melbourne hiding up here for winter. Tuesday 6th turning West across to Longreach through Emerald and Anakie. There is a week long gem festival on so may stay at Anakie to have a look. Catch you all up in a couple of weeks out West.

THUMBS DOWN To the drivers not using their headlights in the thick fog.

THUMBS DOWN To people parking their cars on the new footpaths recently constructed. These are for people to walk on not park on!

THUMBS DOWN It is disappointing to see plants pulled out of the newly established Orana House gardens. Hopefully in the future this great community and Council work will be respected.

THUMBS UP To the two young girls who are also sisters at Foodworkss. It's a pleasure to go in there, it's always clean and they're always sorting out fruit and vegies - great work!

THUMBS UP To the new Rouge Carriage Café. They make the best pies in Australia!

24hr Tractorthon A Success All ‘Round Central West Charity Tractor Trek Group held their second annual ‘Tractorthon’ fundraiser over the weekend at Canowindra Showground, raising money for its chosen charity Little Wings, a not for profit organisation providing transport for sick children and their families from the Central West to the city for free for specialist appointments and treatment. This year over $16,000 was raised from the event, $3,500 more than last year’s event with more money to come in through the Tractor Trek and raffle. Four tractors each completed 446 laps during the 24 hour period with speeds of up to 30kms per hour, covering a total of 356.8km each. Lowes Petroleum kindly donated the 400 litres of diesel required to keep the tractors going. There were 76 participants and driver changes were made every 30 minutes with members of the community, representatives from each of the Schools and Federal member for Calare Mr Andrew Gee MP all getting behind the wheel. “Thanks to everyone for their support and sponsorship. Everything went off with no problems at all and it was great to see so many people showing support,” said Roy White, Central West Charity Tractor Trek

Federal Member for Calare, Mr Andrew Gee MP waves the flag to begin the 2019 24hr Tractorthon.

Group. The Central West Tractor Trek this year will be based in Dubbo for three days over the 27th-29th September and visit the towns of Wongrabon, Beni and Geurie along the way. The tractors will also visit the Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

The raffle is being drawn at this year’s Tractor Trek dinner in Dubbo on 28th September so raffle tickets are still on sale at Canowindra Tyre Service and the Canowindra Phoenix office with some great prizes on offer including a brand new Hyundai i30 to be won. Tickets are only $5 each.

Cabonne Councillors Jamie Jones, Peter Batten, Libby Oldham, Jenny Weaver, Marlene Nash, Ian Davison, Paul Mullins, Mayor Kevin Beatty and Kevin Walker inspecting some of the Fish Fossils inside the new storage facility.

Local Government Week Tour Visits Canowindra

Cabonne councillors and senior staff spoke to and enjoyed lunch with student leaders from Canowindra High School, Canowindra Public School and St Edwards Primary School last Tuesday as part of Local Government Week 2019. During their visit to Canowindra, Cabonne councillors and staff visited the HACC Office, Canowindra Arts space, Memorial Park and The Age of Fishes Museum. “Cabonne Council has developed a tradition in recent years of visiting schools during Local Government Week to help young people in the Shire better understand how the Council works,” said Dale Jones from Cabonne Council. While at The Age of Fishes Museum the special visitors and students were exposed to the amazing work that is happening at the Museum at the moment. The bulk of Canowindra’s unique fish fossil slabs have been relocated from a temporary storage area to the new, purpose-built $600,000 storage and research facility.

The new centre, located adjacent to the Age of Fishes Museum, was built with the assistance of a $300,000 NSW Government grant and $300,000 from Cabonne Council. While the best of the fish fossil slabs have been on display at the museum for a number of years, the rest of the slabs have been stored in less than ideal conditions beneath the grandstand at Canowindra Showground. With some of the slabs weighing up to two tonnes, this week’s relocation to their new home will be a logistical challenge, as well as marking a milestone in the history of the Age of Fishes Museum. As part of the move, the fossils, which were recently gifted to the Australian Museum by Cabonne Council, will be digitally scanned by scientists from Macquarie University. This will enable high resolution 3D rendering and 3D printing of the fossils, as well as digitisation and registration to meet latest international scientific standards.

More than 200 Cabonne businesses, including a number from Canowindra are in the running for the 2019 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards after being nominated by their customers and clients. A record 1,000 individual nominations were received from throughout the Shire, which awards chairperson Libby Oldham described as 'phenomenal'. “The number of individual nominations was 33% higher than last year, while the number of businesses, community organisations and individuals to receive nomination rose by an amazing 66%,” Mrs Oldham said. “A record 33 groups were also nominated in the category of Contribution to Cabonne by a Community Organisation.” Mrs Oldham said the community’s participation in the nominations process was unprecedented and was a tremendous endorsement of Cabonne business operators and their employees. “To be recognised by your customers and clients is one of the best compliments any business can receive,” she said. An online voting process has now started to determine finalists in each of the 17 categories, and people can cast their votes by going to www.daroobusinessawards.com. au. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Manildra on Friday 1 November. Mrs Oldham said that with such a large number of nominations this year, it will be an outstanding achievement to be named as a finalist. “Tickets for the presentation dinner will go on sale in the next few weeks and are likely to be in high demand,” she said. “I would advise people to buy their tickets early as the event has been a sell-out in recent years.” The ticket price of $66 remains the same as in previous years.

CANOWINDRA SPORT

The Hughes brothers; Regan, Brydon and Curtis were all strong against Condo on Sunday.

TIGERS ROAR INTO FINALS

The Canowindra Tigers have forged their way into the semi-finals on the back of a five try rampage to Regan Hughes. The Tigers looked ominous from the first set of six. With pressure from the Tigers on Condo it was Simesi Tapou who scored the first try to lead 4-0. The Tigers had the better of the field position and it was from an intercept for Rob Burns to run 70 metres to score Canowindra’s second try to lead 10 - 0 with 17 minutes gone. It was one way traffic from then on. The Tigers were clearly the stronger side with a larger pack and the pace and size of the backs controlling the game. The half time score was 32 - 0 and all the Tigers had to do was control the ball in the second half to win convincingly. All the forwards played strong and Aaron Earsman was outstanding in defence to nullify anything that Condobolin put up in attack. Condo scored their first points with 9 minutes left in the match making the final score 70-6. Best and Fairest points were 3 Regan Hughes, 2 Brydon Hughes, 1 each Simesi Tapou and Aaron Earsman. Montrose House Players Player went to Regan Hughes. Next week is the last competition game on Saturday at home against Eugowra where the League Tag side take the main game billing at 3.00pm and the First Grade at 1.40pm.

WALLA RUGBY

A long wait finally ended for the under 7’s who have been missing their rugby. It didn’t

take long to dust off the cobwebs with some terrific skills on display. In particular Jack Trengove and Spencer Douglass, scoring several run away tries. Special mention must go to Jack Nash and James Morrow who showed great sportsmanship by volunteering to help Parkes by playing for them. Once the fog cleared Blayney turned on a cracking day for the Mozzies gala day. The 9’s faced up against Bathurst, Orange City and Forbes throughout the day. Forbes as always performed well in what was our toughest game, but the boys refused to give an inch. Rueben Cleary and Sam Breen lead the defence with some crunching tackles. Clancy Hazelton and Will Swords showed some blistering pace on the edges as well in attack. Both coaches were extremely proud of the whole team effort in supporting each other right to the end. Under 11’s played 3 great games coming away with wins against Kinross & Emus with a tough physical game to finish off the day against Forbes. A huge effort as a team, with everyone trying a different position with plenty of passing in each game making all the difference. Coaches points to Hamish, Hugh & Cooper W.

WOMEN’S BOWLS

Firstly I must correct an error I made in last week’s news, one 1st round match in the Handicap Pairs should have read Leanne Stevenson & Dianne Mooney defeated Lorne Burgess & Jenny Middleton 20-15, not 19-15. Results of four matches played in the 2nd round of the Handicap Pairs played on Tuesday, 6th August. Penny Nash & Christine Pickard defeated Moyna Rue & Betty Jenkins 23-13. Joice McNaught & Sheryn O’Malveney defeated Shirley Robson & Daph Bryant 20-14. Marion Wilson & Gwen Haydon defeated Deanna Noble (Sub.) for Joyce Middleton & Nancy Morrow 18-14. Leanne Stevenson & Dianne Mooney defeated Radka Tatterson & Liz Thornberry 21-20. There was one game of social bowls played. Linda Miller, Bobbie Turner & Karen Cox defeated Julie Wythes & Diane Slattery 25-21. The Lucky Draw was won by Christine Pickard with No. 28. Matches drawn to be played in the 3rd round of the Handicap Pairs are. Leanne Stevenson & Dianne Mooney v Marion Wilson & Gwen Haydon. Penny Nash & Sandy Mcdonald (sub, for C.Pickard) v Joice McNaught & Sheryn O’Malveney. Brian & Annette Tidswell of Forbes talked to all the bowlers about how you prepare to start playing a game of bowls. Thank you very much to both as it was most interesting.
