Craft Shop Calling For New Volunteers
The famous Craft Shop in Gaskill St is calling for new volunteers to ensure the longevity of the store. The group of voluntary members have been running the store for than 40 years and are currently looking for new members to volunteer in the shop. Many of the current members are over 75 years of age and are wanting to cut back their hours. The Craft Shop provides the local Canowindra community with freshly baked goods, eggs and honey, handicrafts, children’s toys, indoor plants, wool and haberdashery and over the years the not-for-profit business has given back over $25,000 to the Canowindra community. The group are currently looking for new
members to either volunteer in the shop (you don’t have to be crafty) or to provide new crafts and ideas to the store to keep things interesting for the shoppers. “It would be a shame to see it close, I enjoy volunteering here as it is like a social outing for me,” said President Lorna Cassidy. “I have been a volunteer here for 30 years, I love the social side of it, it isn’t hard to do and I find it interesting,” said member Bev Wilson. The store is currently open MondayFriday from 9am to 4.30pm and from 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday’s. If you are interested in joining the group or volunteering please call in to the store in Gaskill St!

The Canowindra CWA will hold its annual fundraiser, Sunday Serenade at Canowindra All Saints Church on Sunday 8th September 2019. This yearly event raises funds to support local school students further their love of music. The Sunday Serenade started from an idea at a CWA meeting in 2013, to date 8 scholarships have been awarded with successful recipients using the scholarship for lessons in their respective choice of instrument - piano, guitar, saxophone or voice, either at the Orange Conservatorium of Music, or with private tutors which enables them to continue music tuition at a high level and use their musical talent to serve the community. Any school aged person who attends school in Canowindra is eligible to apply for the scholarship. Application forms for the scholarship are available after the concert on Sunday 8th September at the local schools or at Canowindra Pharmacy, applications close at the end of October 2019. Each year the award is judged by a small
committee which includes an independent judge from outside the Canowindra area. The Canowindra CWA Sunday Serenade concert is a showcase of local talent and provides an opportunity for local artists to gain performance experience, so come along and encourage our local upcoming artist. By Christine Sampson
The Canowindra CWA Sunday Serenade will return to All Saints Church on September 8th.

THUMBS DOWN To communication and community spirit. Three times a thumbs down has appeared anonymously regarding registered trucks parking legally in Rodd Street. If only you felt you could discuss your grievance with the owner of these vehicles and possibly offer resolu-
tions to your concern that our town is ugly due to these vehicles. Your opinion and voice may be better used to lobby council to change their parking regulations to ensure your town is beautiful. Either of these options may afford action rather than using this platform to publicly discredit and demean a community member who is parking registered vehicles legally. Raelene Warn

BE Seen more than hope to those affected by cancer. The Daffodil Day Appeal will take place on Friday 23 August 2019 out the front of the IGA in Canowindra. The Cancer Council will be accepting cash donations with pins and fresh daffodils for sale. Thanks to investment in research over many years, amazing advancements have been made in cancer prevention, screening and treatment – helping to increase survival rates from 49% in the 1980s to 69% today. This year, Daffodil Day celebrates 33 years of turning Australia yellow, with Cancer Council aiming to raise more than $4 million for cancer research through online donations, and by recruiting more than 3,110 volunteers to staff around 420 sites on Daffodil Day in NSW alone.

So Many Benefits Of A Small School St Edward’s Primary School in Canowindra are excited to invite those starting Kindergarten in 2020 to the “Little Saints” Kinder Orientation Program which will commence soon. The first session is on Monday 9th September from 9am – 11am and includes a meeting for parents while the children attend class. There will be another 4 sessions after this on Monday 16th and 23rd September, Monday 21st and 28th October. St Edward’s in Canowindra has a lot to offer for a small school including… • More one-on-one time: This type of educating is critical, both for development of skills and for inspiring students. • Students can’t hide: In a large class, it becomes much easier for the quiet kids, or the unmotivated kids, to hide in a clique of friends or at the back of the class. With fewer students, the teacher is more capable of ensuring everyone participates and engages the material. • More cohesive class culture: A smaller class will ultimately make a more cohesive unit than a larger one. In a smaller classroom setting, students will have the opportunity to interact with and form relationships with all of their classmates, ensuring that the class is more supportive of each other. • Teachers can form better relationships: Related to the increased amount of individual time spent is the quality of relationships teachers are able to build with each student. In smaller classes, teachers better know the strengths, weaknesses, and needs of each pupil • Students are more engaged: When students have a strong relationship with their teacher and know they are responsible for their work and level of participation, they are bound to be more engaged with the curriculum. For more information please contact Principal Ken McNamara on 6344 1170 or drop in and visit the school in Tilga Street!

MONTROSE House Hello readers, welcome to this month’s column. A big congratulations to all the winners in the Xmas in July Window Display Competition, it all looked fabulous! A special mention to Canowindra Pharmacy, Vinnies and also Garden and Montgomerie it would have been a hard job to judge them all. I had the most successful July since I have been in the house, on one week alone I had a bus from Sydney walking around with a glass of champagne looking at all the lights in the windows, and that was a Tuesday night! The word is getting out there at just how fabulous a town we live in. We also had a bus load from Cowra for lunch and shopping, one from Orange, one from Bathurst, groups from Forbes, Parkes, Eugowra and Gooloogong all coming at 11am, shopping till 12 noon then lunch from 12-2pm followed by more shopping. I’m sure that many of the locals coming into town on Thursday and Friday at the end of the month saw lots of happy people from out of town dressed in their Xmas finery shopping. It is a wonderful experience and we do prizes for best dressed and encourage people to get into the mood, so it was a really pleasant way to survive our cold weather. But more importantly we have introduced new people to our town - I always say Christmas is for the kids and Yuletide is for the adults! Busy now preparing for September’s Canowindra Floriade – a mini Floriade where we are encouraging the businesses in Gaskill St to dress their shops and windows with floral decorations. I have ordered lots of potted colour to go into the barrels in Gaskill St and encourage everybody to get on board and support our town, we are in drought so every dollar we can bring in keeps our town thriving! Take care and best wishes Tommy xxx

CANOWINDRA SPORT CANOWINDRA TIGERS The Canowindra Tigers had a good win against the Eugowra Eagles 82 – 2 on a freezing cold day at Tom Clyburn Oval. The Eugowra side only had 10 players after a number of their players left and the Canowindra Tigers decided to play with 10 also and run reserves on when needed. Eugowra was very appreciative and their President commented after the game at the presentation at the Royal Hotel how pleased he was with the effort from Canowindra to show such sportsmanship. The Montrose House Players Player went to Andy Kelleher with all players receiving 1 point for good sportsmanship and great enthusiasm. The league tag girls had a great win over Eugowra 66-0. They ran the ball well with good skills and backed up one another and defended really well. 3 points went to Brittney Whatman, 2 points to Kelly Price and 1 point to Jessica Perry, all three girls were awarded Players Player for the week. This Saturday 17th August Canowindra will host the first week of Semi Finals. The league tag girls will play Condobolin at 1.40pm and the first grade Tigers will take on Grenfell at 3pm.
