Find Your Secret Power This Book Week
It is one of every child’s favourite weeks at school – the annual Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week which is being held this week at schools in and around Canowindra. It is a time when children and parents can get creative together and come up with a costume to wear to school. The theme this year is “Reading is my Secret Power” so the costume possibilities are endless! Some great costumes were on display at Pre-School on Tuesday including Where’s Wally, The Man From Snowy River, Elsa, Little Red Riding Hood and Thelma the Unicorn to name a few! The Canowindra Pre-School children were treated each day this week, with a different member of the local community coming into read a story. On Monday for-
mer Pre-School Director Anne Ward came into read, on Tuesday local Librarian Rossanne Holmes read “A Stack of Alpacas” by Matt Cosgrove and “I Just Ate My Friend” finishing off the morning with a scarecrow song and dance that the children loved! On Wednesday the Canowindra Community Reading Day was held at St Edward’s School with activities, book readings, a fruit break and a free lunch for all students and on Thursday “Cowboy” Tommy Jeffs will entertain the Gumnut and Gumtree room children at Canowindra Pre-School. The Canowindra Public School will celebrate book week and the importance of reading with a Book Parade today Thursday 22nd August at 2pm at the school hall.

Hello to everyone back home in Canowindra and district from Allan and Debbie. From Rockhampton we headed west and stayed at Anackie and looked in on the Annual Gem Fest that ran for the week and a must see as it covers pretty much anything to do with minerals from under and above ground. Stalls, live music and lots of food and visits to towns such as Emerald, Sapphire, Rubyvale and Anackie itself. Onward to Longreach for four days, fairly famous as the original home of Qantas Airways and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Longreach also has a long history of being a cattle town and area and as such has the Stockman’s Hall Of Fame. This was our second visit in five years to the Hall of Fame yet you can still see so much that we missed last time, so much history back to the early Aboriginal stockmen and early settlement. The displays and interactive communication methods take you on a journey through time to the present. We then travelled down south through Tambo to Roma for a couple of days. Roma is another area noted for a large cattle

farming area and also the vast Roma Saleyards. Lots of old history here and also home to a massive Bottle Tree. From Roma we headed further south into NSW and Lightning Ridge, our first time in our home state for four and half months. Lightning Ridge is all about opal mining. Everywhere you go or look there is some sort of digging happening. The whole area is dotted with old and new digging sites. We obtained maps from the Visitors Centre that you use to follow on your own selfguided tour of the diggings. We next head through Bourke and onto Broken Hill then down to Mildura for a week so will update again in a couple of weeks. Regards Al and Deb.

Efficient And Profitable
Felix Rams has a singular focus on producing efficient and profitable prime lambs by breeding high performance, structurally sound meat sheep rams. The commitment to collecting good accurate performance data is in the DNA and is embedded as the fundamental approach to the way Felix Rams breed sheep. However you look at it, 25,800 lambs weighed within 12 hours of birth, 20,900 weaning weights, 17,500 scans with weights for postweaning fat and muscle, 4,400 individual worm egg counts is a lot of data, and it all contributes to the accuracy of the asbvs on the rams you buy. At Felix Rams, sheep are selected for quick early growth, and maturity, grown in the paddock, not maximum adult ram size. Almost all of the selection is done at 6.5 to 7 months of age, reflecting the age most lambs are sold. Felix Rams will efficiently produce a 22-28kg lamb. Early maturity also means the suckers have the best chance of hitting the target year in year out, while the attention to the “right” amount of fat means that you will almost always have finish on your lambs at market weights. As usual this year’s sale rams are paddock grown and finished, not pumped up or grown out on a grain feeder. Felix Rams will offer 140 Poll Dorset and 50 White Suffolk rams at their 21st annual on-property sale at Greenethorpe on September 3rd at 1pm. Catalogues are available at www.felixrams.com.au from August 25th, or call Rodney 0417 499 204, Isaac 0437 493 407 or the selling agents, Allan Gray and Co Cowra 6342 2377.

Josh Keefe, Rural Sales Specialist, was recently announced as having been made a partner of the Ray White Emms Mooney business. Director Patrick Bird visited the Cowra office to congratulate him and commend all members of the team on their success and hard work after the acquisition of LJ Hooker Cowra, back in April this year. The Directors of Ray White Emms Mooney are excited at having Josh as an owner in the business. Mr Keefe said it has always been a goal of his to be an equity partner with such a successful business. "I've been in real estate for 17 years and this was something I always wanted," said Josh. "I learnt my Real Estate trade by throwing myself in the deep end in the Sydney property market and learnt from some of the highest performers in that market, always with the intention of moving back to Cowra to be solely focused on rural property sales in the Cowra and surrounding region," continued Josh. "The strength of Ray White Emms Mooney, being the largest and most successful team covering the Tablelands and Central West, allows us to offer much more to our clients," Josh said. Mr Bird added that Josh Keefe has had unbelievable success in his rural property sales since starting with the company and has a huge future in the industry. "We've gone great guns of late, not only on the Rural side but the Residential and Property Management side of the business. We've surrounded ourselves with success and with the right team members on board, are now Cowra’s largest local team,” said Mr Bird.

New Lights For Tilga St Crossing
Lance Birrell will be performing on Father's Day.
Father’s Day Sunday Session
The ‘Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo’ are going to be celebrating Father’s Day and their First Birthday on Sunday 1st September. The club will light up the BBQ for some sausage sandwiches between 3 - 4.30pm and of course share some cake with everyone. A big celebration needs a great performer and the Club are proud to have renowned guitarist and performer Lance Birrell joining them! Now residing in Dubbo, Lance joins the sensational line up of artists who play at Tamworth Country Music Festival every year. “From the late 80s to early 90s I started getting involved playing guitar at country music club shows in South Australia, which led to getting heavily involved in the Country music scene for many years to eventually work and touring with artists such as Troy Cassar-Daley, Adam Harvey, Becky Cole and also doing duo and band work with Keith Urban while he was in Australia,” says Lance. I am looking forward to performing for the people of Canowindra. I grew up in country South Australia so I have a great connection with country and rural people, who really enjoy live music and love to dance and have a great time.
After many years of lobbying and rallying by the local schools and the Canowindra community an improvement will finally be made at the dangerous Tilga St crossing. An RMS representative last week announced that hopefully during the October school holidays a set of flashing lights will be installed at the crossing. These lights will be sensor activated when pedestrians approach the crossing and will operate school days when the flags are out from 8.00am – 4.00pm. The advantage of the lights is that they enhance visibility. It is very important students and parents know they still need to take care at the Tilga St crossing.

Lake Rowlands Level Increases
The General Manager of Central Tablelands Water (CTW), Gavin Rhodes, has advised that the level of Lake Rowlands has increased from 50% to 58% as a result of the recent snow event in the Central Tablelands area. Mr Rhodes said: “although the level of Lake Rowlands had been holding steady at 50% over the past month, it was very pleasing to receive approximately 50mm of rain and a decent dump of snow in the Lake Rowlands catchment over the past 7 to 10 days. Now that the catchment has been saturated by the recent snow event, we need more follow up rain and subsequent run-off. It just goes to show what a great catchment Lake Rowlands is as we (CTW) continue to lobby both State and Federal governments to fund additional storage.” Level 3 water restrictions will remain in place for the entire CTW supply network and CTW will continue to closely monitor the inflows into Lake Rowlands and long term rainfall forecasts.

Q Fever Risk The Western NSW Local Health District is warning people to get vaccinated to guard against Q fever, as drought and high winds increase the risk of the disease spreading. So far this year there have been 47 confirmed cases of Q fever in the area. Q fever is a bacterial infection caused by inhaling dust particles contaminated by infected animal secretions. The infection is carried by cattle, goats, sheep and other domesticated and wild animals. However, the bacteria can easily be carried on farm tools or work clothes and brought into the family home. Q fever symptoms often appear like severe flu, with high fevers and chills, sweating, severe headaches, muscle and joint pains and extreme fatigue. A single dose vaccine is recommended for people who have the potential to be exposed to Q fever.

RURAL ROUNDUP Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Major auction players were again absent this week, resulting in opening prices that were generally 100 cents behind the previous week. Those buyers that were active continually reduced their basis and as a result the market continued to deteriorate throughout the course of the sale. By the close-of-trade the NRI had lost 166 cents, to finish at 1538, the lowest level in two years. The erosion in sentiment is being attributed to the escalating trade war which now includes tariffs on wool, there are also fears of a US recession, not to mention the unrest in Hong Kong and the UK Brexit chaos. South Africa’s wool auctions were suspended this week and will be suspended again next week as they seek clarification of a clause in the new ‘greasy wool export health certificate’ required by China due to the FMD outbreak earlier in the year. And whilst the absence of South Africa in the market will reduce overall global supply, it was not enough to counteract the current lack of demand this week.

TRACTORTHON ANOTHER HUGE SUCCESS The 2nd annual 24hr Canowindra Tractorthon got underway earlier this month.
It was an honour to start them off! It drew tractors and drivers from all over the region to raise funds for charity Little Wings. Spare a thought for the drivers who were
on the frosty night/dawn shifts.
Congratulations to all involved - it gets bigger every year. We’re also all looking forward to this year’s Tractor Trek on the last weekend in September which this year will see tractors trekking around the Dubbo and Geurie areas.
Visit the Sport Aus website for more information on how to apply. Stronger Communities Program Expressions of Interest applications are open for Round 5 of the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Programme, closing 5pm Friday, 6 September. LODGE YOUR TAX RETURN FOR YOUR TAX REBATE TAX CUTS are flowing to Australians, right now. By early this week, 2.9 million Australian taxpayers had lodged their 2018-19 return; many will be eligible for a rebate up to $1080 thanks new tax rules which passed earlier this month. That’s on top of other tax incentives like the instant asset write-off for businesses with turnover up to $50 million, who are able to write off purchases of equipment each valued at up to $30,000.
This money is now finding its way back into local shops, helping travel, is coming off loans or is being reinvestment in businesses – including more jobs. And I am pleased to say it’s for the long term. Our tax package will ensure 94 per cent of Australian taxpayers pay a marginal rate of no more than 30 cents in the dollar – a win for all Australians and the community of Calare.
Authorised by Andrew Gee MP, National Party of Australia, Suite 1/179A Anson Street, Orange NSW 2800.

CANOWINDRA SPORT CANOWINDRA PYTHONS JUNIOR RUGBY UNION A sunny day in Forbes, lent itself to some wonderful skills from the Under 7’s side. They played Molong, Parkes and Forbes. Karen Smith showed confidence and skill in some bustling runs and tight defence. In the last game with the loss of Tommy Jobson, Jack Trengove stood up and scored some brilliant tries. Sam Markcrow looked determined and contributed some genuine pace. All boys played in the right spirit and are looking forward to their last games next week in Wellington. The U9’s skill level was put to the test in their first game against Forbes, training efforts paid off as support play and clearing out at the rucks pushed Forbes back. With Al and James leading from the front and Spencer doing a great job playing half back for the first time, it didn’t take long before the speedy backs were over the try line. Good backing up in defence kept the U9s in front for a well-earned win. The second game against Parkes, was just as hard as the ground, but great teamwork paid off again for the U9s, keeping Parkes scoreless to come away with another win. The boys started to run out of puff as the day warmed up for their last game against Cowra, but still managed a draw after a solid performance.
MEN'S BOWLS Thanks to Bob and Shirley Robson who sponsored the Mixed Mufti Bowls afternoon last Saturday. Twelve teams competed and had an enjoyable afternoon. The winners were the team of Phil and Zac Lees and Brian McClintock and the runners up were the team of Vinnie Mirto, Peter Taylor and Barney Robson. A consolation prize was awarded to the team of Westy, Tot and Tony.
Last Sunday the Major Fours Final was played with Michael Traves (sub for Peter Taylor), Pat Kennedy, David Beath and Roger Traves against Brian McClintock, Ian Nelder (sub for Bruce Webb), Steve Kirkman and Cyril Webb. Cyril's team got off to a good start leading 17-nil after six ends. This was enough of a lead to ward off any challenge from Roger's team. Cyril's team won the final 28-20. The Consistency Singles Final was also played with Tony Tuimauga against Vinnie Mirto. Tony took control early in the game to lead throughout to win the final 153-127. Saturday August 24: Minor Fours - K Walker, L Nunn, P Markcrow and T Tuimauga v A Wyburn, D Watt, W Fisher and B McClintock. Sunday August 25: Major Pairs - N Delaney and D Beath v P Markcow and T Tuimauga. Nominations are now called for the Mixed Pairs as well as the Major and Minor triples. By Ian Nelder
CANOWINDRA TIGERS Tigers have dropped out of the semi-finals losing in a tough match against Grenfell 2824. The Tigers had their chances but failed to capitalise especially in the opposition 20 metre zone. Canowindra started the game well and looked to be gaining control of the match and led 6-0 early with Murray forcing his way over. Grenfell hit back with 3 converted tries, 18-6. The Tigers fought back with a try just before half time when Brydon Hughes ran onto a good pass from the halves to narrow the score to 18-12. Grenfell scored first in the second stanza after the Tigers showed good scrambling defence only to concentrate on Grenfell’s last tackle to let them in the corner. Grenfell holding onto a 10 point lead looked confi-
dent but the Tigers fought back with Tafuo scoring a try which was converted to narrow the lead to 4 points. With 3 minutes left Semesi scored from a rubber from Burns which was converted but Grenfell still lead 28-24. It was a disappointing way to go out but the boys can be proud of their effort as no one gave in and when they controlled the ball Canowindra looked the better team. The League Tag Tigresses didn’t fare any better than first grade going down to a much improved Condobolin side and their defence on the day was impregnable. The girls had a much improved year and the score of 32-10 is no indication of the talent they have. By Barry Traves
WOMEN'S BOWLS The final of the Handicap Pairs was played on Tuesday, 20th August. Congratulations to the Handicap Pair winners for 2019 with Penny Nash and Christine Pickard defeating Marion Wilson and Gwen Haydon 28-11. There were three social games played. Linda Miller and Deanna Noble defeated Shirley Robson and Libby Balcombe 1910. Karen Cox, Daph Bryant and Dianne Mooney defeated Radka Tatterson, Leanne Stevenson and Colleen Crump 23-13. Nancy Morrow, Jill Messenger and Sandy McDonald had an 18 all draw against Diane Slattery, Liz Thornberry and Betty Jenkins. A very happy birthday to two members this month Gwen Haydon for 15th and Diane Slattery for 27th. Deanna Noble, Radka Tatterson and Nancy Morrow won the day at Manildra’s Gala Day held on Wednesday, 14th August. They defeated an Orange team 24-9. Liz Thornberry’s team lost their game by 6 shots but they all enjoyed the day of bowls. By Shirley Robson
