Amazing Illustrator Wows Canowindra Community Reading Day

Canowindra held another successful Community Reading Day last Wednesday at St Edward’s Primary School with over 150 students from Cabonne Blayney Family Day Care, Canowindra Pre-School, Cudal Community Children’s Centre, St Edward’s Primary School, Canowindra High School and Canowindra Public School attending. There were many activities on offer for the students throughout the day from a number of the community groups including the Canowindra Community Health Centre and the Central West Library. The children had their faces painted by the High School Students and enjoyed traditional stories and songs about the Torres Straight Islands from Ms Tapim from Canowindra Public School. This year Canowindra was lucky enough to have children’s book illustrator Nathaniel

Eckstrom visit for the day. Nathaniel delighted the children by reading the stories “Duck” and “Stubborn Stanley” and then went on to sketch and illustrate the images from the books. The students then got to participate and do their own sketch of Duck and Stubborn Stanley with some great drawings emerging. The children also enjoyed a visit from Captain Barnacles who had a case of the “missing letter dilemma” and they all enjoyed a cuddle with “Freeda the Reader”. Mr Ken McNamara, Principal of St Edward’s Primary School said “I would like to thank Mrs Fisher for organising this special day for the Canowindra Community”. Every child who attended the reading day received a book to take home and share with their family. By Sarah Maynard

Robbie and Maureen Lawrence and Charles and Kylie Lawrence from Goonigal Poll Dorsets held their 4th Annual Ram Sale on Tuesday at the Canowindra Showground. Bill Brien from Allan Gray and Co ran the auction with 19 bidder registrations and more than 40 people in attendance on a lovely near-spring day. Bill Brien commented that “It was great to see some new faces in the crowd and welcomed back the regular buyers.” There were 77 lots penned and ready for viewing by 10am at the Showground. The bidding started off strong with the top priced ram going for $1,700. 24 out of the 37 2018 drop rams sold to an average of $900 with the top price being $1,700. Then 34 out of 40 2017 drop rams sold for an average of$570 with a top price of $1,150 twice. All rams up for auction were Brucellosis accredited free and vaccinated for OJD and footrot free. Goonigal Poll Dorsets rams are known for

their early maturing weight for age, carcase shape and yield in their progeny. The Lawrence family would like to wish all the buyers at the sale every success with their purchases and for the rest of the season. Remember Goonigal Poll Dorsets are “The best rams ewe can get” so look out for next year’s sale!

Forage And Graze Locally This Spring

If you think a day of grazing, tasting and meandering through vineyards to savour delectable organic food and wine sounds like an itinerary item for a trip around Tuscany, you are on the wrong continent! Cowra Tourism will be running half day guided Wine & Forage Tours of the Cowra and local wine region this spring giving you the opportunity to experience the very best of local organic food and wine. Antonio D’Onise of Antonio’s Vineyard, formally Gardener's Ground, kicks off the tour with a wine ‘treasure’ wander through his vineyard to not only fill up on very interesting facts about organic and vegan wines, but also taste his latest imaginative shiraz and chardonnay releases. Taking over from Antonio is Sam Stratham who takes the group on a wander through Canowindra's first organic vineyard and

farm at Rosnay. Along the way there is a tasting table with a range of some delicious fig and olive products. The last stop is at Wallington, just outside Canowindra, with its unique straw bale cellar door. Sitting under the pergola tasting the Bald Hill wines with breathtaking views over the valley, while lunch is being prepared in the wood fire pizza oven, it is easy to imagine yourself in Tuscany… The 2019 Cowra Wine & Forage Tours will run from Saturday 14 September and will be available throughout the Spring season. Tickets are $80.00 per person and spaces are limited, to secure your seat for the next Cowra Wine & Forage Tour contact the Cowra Visitor Information Centre on 02 6342 4333 or book online via www. visitcowra.com.au/wineandforage.

Cabonne Shire Council Mayor And General Manager Invite You To Meet Them In Canowindra Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty and the Council’s General Manager Bradley Byrnes will visit Canowindra next month to meet with residents and community groups about any issues they may wish to discuss. Cr Beatty and Mr Byrnes will be available at the Council’s Canowindra office on Wednesday 18 September 2019 between 10am and 1pm. “We understand that residents and organisations from the Canowindra and Eugowra areas may wish to speak directly with the Mayor and General Manager, but don’t always have the time or transport to attend a meeting at Council’s Molong offices,” Cr

Beatty said. “It is important to us that everyone has the chance to talk to us about issues or matters that concern them.” Cr Beatty said he and Mr Byrnes hoped to be available in Canowindra again before the end of the year and planned to conduct similar meetings next year. Residents or community groups wishing to speak with the Mayor and General Manager should book a time by calling the General Manager’s Personal Assistant on 6392 3208 or emailing council@cabonne. nsw.gov.au

CANOWINDRA SPORT great runs out wide. Spencer was right in the action at the back of the rucks as he steps up to take over from the unstoppable Sam. Good support play from Clancy and Oscar after Campbell broke through the Dubbo defence put Oscar in for the last try of the season. Their continuous great backing up has given the U9’s the edge over most other teams in the competition with 3 wins from 3 games. A top result, well done on a great season!

WOODBRIDGE CUP DRAW Week 3 Final Qualifier - Sunday 1st September at Cargo: • 11:20am Trundle V Cargo • 12:40pm Grenfell V Manildra • 2:00pm Manildra V Grenfell

ATHLETICS The Canowindra Pythonettie's finished off the Netball season with a sausage sizzle last Friday afternoon.

MEN'S BOWLS Results of the Minor Fours played last Saturday. K Walker, L Nunn, P Markcrow and T Tumiauga def D Watt, Z Lees, W Fisher and A Wyburn 21-12. CANOWINDRA PYTHONS JUNIOR RUGBY UNION Lovely weather and a carnival like atmosphere for the last week of rugby hosted by Wellington. The U7s boys all contributed

and displayed excellent skills that have developed throughout the season. Sam Markcrow had good runs and a spectacular try, supported by Kaden Smith with good runs and an excellent inside step, a true team player. It was great that Lachlan Nash has started to look to off load after he draws the defenders. Likewise Tommy Jobson selfless passing and a speed machine, scoring at will. Jack Nash was elusive in attack, especially from the kick off and Jack Trengove scored some excellent tries with an evasive step off his left foot. James Morrow another selfless player, he has developed a good knowledge of field position and he is quick off the mark. Spencer Douglass looked for space out wide and he can step off both feet. Sunday was Grand Final day for the U9’s with a tough line up against Wellington and two teams from Dubbo. The older boys showed that they are ready for the step up to Us next year by leading the way for the others. They have all taken their game to the next level over the last few weeks. The defence was pretty solid with some great tackles from Reuben and Max. With James away, Fergus joined in with Alex and Fraser to break through opposition defence. Good cleaning out at the rucks gave extra ball for Will Harris and Will Swords to make some
