Peter Watt at Lawrence’s IGA was frustrated by the NBN outages last week in Canowindra.

Compensation For NBN Outages Following the severe NBN outages which happened last week in Canowindra and subsequent follow up with the local Federal Member, Andrew Gee, a senior representative from Telstra has spoken with Cr Cheryl Newsom to advise that Telstra will be looking to compensate business owners and any other parties who have been affected. They have provided a compensation form which can be completed and sent to them, copies of which are available from The Canowindra Phoenix office or can be emailed to you directly. This lodgement requires evidence and substantiation of the loss, with specific details required as outlined in the form. In addition, you can also

contact Andrew Gee’s local office and they can assist as well. Telstra said that it is the duty of the service provider and not NBN to notify when planned outages are to occur. In this instance it is very apparent that Telstra and other providers did not carry this out. Telstra seemed not to be even aware that this was occurring as evidenced by lack of notification to their customers in this area. Telstra have also advised that it is very important to ensure that everybody has a backup functionality available and if this is not in place with your current modem then you should contact Telstra directly or your local service provider. Hello to all at home in Canowindra hope all the Dad’s had a Happy Father’s Day as I did. From Lightning Ridge it was onwards to Bourke where we visited the Back-OBourke Exhibition Centre that is very well set out taking you through time. Drove 8kms out to the Darling River seeing the old bridge and great fishing/camping area. Next travelled across to Broken Hill and it's long history of mining. Went up to the Line of Load Miners Memorial with various old mining machines displayed plus stories of mining as you go along the walk to the memorial that lists names, ages and nationalities of miners killed on the job throughout Broken Hill’s mining history. Next travelled down south to Mildura on the Murray River for a week. Visited several local tourist attractions and also went on a 2 hour tour of the river on the old paddle steamer Melbourne, takes you on a slow trip through place and time. We are next off to Echuca for a couple of days then onto the big Lake Hume at Albury for a couple of weeks. Until next update all keep safe. Regards Al and Deb.

Questions still remain unanswered as to why they would elect to conduct a planned outage during business hours which has meant much disruption to the local village and businesses with no prior warning. This is something that Andrew Gee’s Office and Telstra will be taking up with NBN. Cr Newsom has also compiled a submission to be sent to Ray Hadley’s radio show at 2GB, and there has been a suggestion that it should also go to the Telecommunications Ombudsman. If you require any further information or a copy of the compensation form please email Cheryl at cheryl.newsom@inxcess. com.au

Think Orange Region A new relocation, business and investment website has been launched under a joint regional economic development project involving Cabonne, Orange and Blayney Councils. Under the new branding of THINK Orange Region, the new website is designed to be the first online portal for people to visit to obtain information on either relocating, doing business or investing in the region. Promoting the message of aspirational, accessible and achievable, THINK Orange Region is set to provoke people to action and get them to THINK Space, THINK Opportunity, THINK Business, THINK Connectivity, THINK Investment and THINK Balance. The project was funded by the NSW Government under the Regional Growth – Marketing and Promotion Fund and is part of the delivery of the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Regional Economic Development Strategy 2018-2022. Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty, Orange Mayor Reg Kidd and Blayney Mayor Scott Ferguson said THINK Orange Region was a collaborative effort of all three neighbouring council areas to deliver a major economic development initiative. “By working in partnership, the regional economic footprint will prosper,” Cr Beatty said. “It would be wonderful to have more businesses providing employment and the continuation of a skilled labour force. This project has been delivered by using local businesses from the THINK Orange Region, which demonstrates the level of expertise and business services here. This is showcased by the inclusion of case studies covering relocation, doing business and investment." The next stages of THINK Orange Region is to undertake a marketing campaign, establish brand ambassadors and build on the website content by capturing local information. The THINK Orange Region website can be viewed at www.thinkorangeregion.com.au

Cabonne Council Launches $6,000 Acquisitive Art Prize

The inaugural Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize, which will distribute $6,000 to the winning artists, will be launched today Thursday 5th September 2019 in Molong. The prize will be an annual event to foster arts in the Shire and enable Council to acquire a collection of exceptional artworks. The winner of the major award, the Cabonne Acquisitive Art Prize, will receive $4,250, while a People’s Choice award will be worth $1,000. There will also be $500 for the winning high school entry and $250 for a primary school prize. With the major prizemoney, Cabonne Council will purchase the winning artwork each year. The chairperson of the Council’s art prize working group Cr Libby Oldham said the competition aimed to increase opportunities for participation in Cabonne’s arts and cultural program. “It will enable Council to acquire and exhibit quality works which showcase the talents of artists in the Shire, as well as fostering a sense of identity, pride and place in Cabonne.” Initially the art prize will be open to any artist living or working in the Cabonne Local Government Area or who has attended a school in the Shire. Applications will open on Friday 6th September 2019 and close on 24th January 2020. The inaugural exhibition will be held in Molong from 14-21 March 2020, with the official opening and announcement of the winning works taking place on 19th March 2020. Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee will be among the guests at tonight’s launch at the Molong Council Chambers, starting at 6pm.

Jenny McDonald Awarded Parent Of The Year

Jenny McDonald a parent from Gooloogong Public School was named as one of the eleven Public School Parents of the Year for 2019 at the NSW Minister’s and Secretary’s Awards for Excellence last week. The NSW Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell, said “These awards highlight the tremendous contribution that students, teachers, principals and the school community make to public education in NSW as we strive for learning and teaching excellence.” Jenny McDonald is an outstanding parent who exemplifies the core values of Public Education in NSW. Her dedication to ensuring students from the small country town of Gooloogong receive authentic learning and extra-curricular experiences is second to none. Jenny's day to day willingness to help and support the school showcases her absolute selfless persona. She leads the Gooloogong Public School P&C with respect and dignity and has been a key voice in school planning and projects for seven years now. “To be honest, I feel very humbled to have even been nominated for such a prestigious award and it was certainly an honour to be 1 of 11 recipients named across the state as Parent of the Year! There are a lot of parents making amazing contributions to education,” said Jenny. “I strongly believe, that fostering partnerships between teachers, parents, community and the students themselves helps to create and deliver optimal opportunities for our kids to do and be their best." To me, these awards for excellence show that the NSW Department of Education also understand and appreciate the importance of these contributions and the impact

they have on learning, sustainability and student growth,” continued Jenny. “We have a wonderful team at Gooloogong Public School and I’d like to thank them sincerely, for their willingness to openly value and encourage input from everyone. They continually work hard to provide our kids with quality education and many valuable learning experiences,” said Mrs McDonald.

The Voice of a Survivor is a unique project that grew out of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Sexual Abuse. After four years of harrowing investigation and testimony, the Commission delivered its final report in December of 2017, and in so doing discovered ‘Another Australia’ – one that many struggle to recognise or acknowledge, even today. What the Commission found was that the sexual and physical abuse of children, prisoners, patients, churchgoers and many other vulnerable people, was endemic across Australian society. Crossing boundaries of colour, sex, age and type, the Commission found nothing less than abuse, and the covering up of abuse, on a breathtaking scale. As a response to the Commission, The Voice of a Survivor began its work to find justice for the many survivors of abuse in institutions, in the form of letters of apology and financial reparations. Working with some of the finest law firms in Australia, the firm has found such justice for many who felt their voice would never be heard. The Voice of a Survivor believes passionately in justice for all Australians who have been abused and dispossessed, including members of the Stolen Generation. If you identify as a survivor of abuse or as a member of the Stolen Generation, then now is the time to act. Do not let your abuser go. Hand back the burden of shame and guilt that you have been carrying, so unfairly, for so long. Claim back what is yours and move on to a brighter, better day. Contact The Voice of a Survivor today. Community Survey Constructive Solutions is working with Cabonne Council to update the Bike Plan and Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP). A vital component of updating the plans is gaining an understanding of how the community uses the current infrastructure, and identifying where community needs are not being met. A Bike Plan and PAMP is a strategic action plan for Council, which provides a framework for developing safe, convenient and connected pedestrian and cycling routes, and identifies the need for specific facilities. This ultimately allows Council to construct the required facilities, as once the plans are completed, Council will be in a stronger position to access grant funding from the State and Federal Government for works identified in the plans. Views on the current infrastructure and where the community feel more work needs to be done are now being taken by a survey. Visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ CKSKJXZ to take the survey. The survey can also be accessed through Cabonne Council’s Facebook page. The survey will be open until midnight Sunday 29th September.

The Canowindra High School Show Team

Show Success

Well done to the Canowindra High School students involved in the Junior Judging at Parkes Show last week. A number of students picked up ribbons – Hayley Watson (merino and grain), Kathleen Pace (merino), Chloe Bellach (fruit + veg), Caitlyn Roy (merino) and Maisie Harrison (fruit + veg and grain). Darcy Merchant received 1st in meat sheep, fruit + veg, merino fleece, and 2nd in merino judging. She also received the most successful judge ribbon for her efforts. Another highlight of the day was Canowindra High School receiving the ASC of NSW Next Generation Award for the way the students conducted themselves on the day. This included the way they cooperated as a group and the high level language and communication skills they exhibited.

What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I enjoy playing Poker and having a drink of Whiskey. What are you really good at? Doing a good job at delivering parcels, oh also I’m good at annoying my wife Narelle. What is your pet hate? The Chemist running late. If you could have a super power what would it be and why? To stay young would be great! Tell us about your best holiday ever? The three week holiday to London and Paris with my wife in 2011 was great. The scenery and buildings are magnificent. I would really love to go back. What makes your day? Running on time. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? I was a Taxi Driver and Forklift driver before working for TOLL. I can drive just about anything including driving my wife Narelle mad!

Canowindra Business And Progress Association Update It was great to see a good attendance at the meeting held last week, including some local groups being represented. Remember you don’t have to be a business to come along to these meetings. Inspector Adam Beard and Sargent Rod Buhr from Cowra Police Station attended and gave the meeting some interesting facts on what is happening around Canowindra and the State. There will be a new Police Officer stationed in Canowindra from October and it will be great to have someone stationed here in the town and police not having to travel from Cowra to attend to matters. He is a young man with a family and he will be welcomed upon his arrival. The local Police will be concentrating on conducting an audit of firearms in the district, particularly in relation to the storage of firearms on properties. In addition, they suggested that if there is an event coming up which requires the closing of any roads and traffic management, then it is essential that the Police are involved in any discussions. The biggest concern is for the continued safety of all those involved at the event. Also in attendance at the meeting were Bradley Byrnes, the new General Manager of Cabonne, and Heather Nicholls, Director of Planning and Environment. Brad gave the meeting an overview of how he wanted to be involved with Canowindra. With community strategic plans being discussed at the moment, Canowindra needs to pull together to highlight what Canowindra needs for the next five years and what it wants. If you have some ideas, come along to the next meeting at the Canowindra Services Club on Wednesday 25th September.
