PAINTBALL, ANYONE? Year 5 students Clancy Bolam, Zac Wheeldon, Joe Ellison, Griffin Jones and Liam Toole get ready for Paintball Combat during the excursion
Local Kids Make Positive Connections At Camp
How much fun would it be to spend three days with more than 100 other year 5 students, messing about in the great outdoors? Last month, 114 local kids got to find out when they enjoyed three days of adventure, skill development, and outdoor learning at NSW Sport and Recreation Camp Lake Burrendong. The camp is an annual event under Forbes Shire Council’s Positive Connections program, which began in 2011 and is supported by Evolution Mining. Council and Evolution Mining partnered with Forbes North Public, Forbes Public, Bedgerabong Public and St Laurence’s Primary Schools to provide the subsidised excursion, which ran from 21-23 June. The Lake Burrendong Camp provides the students with a range of challenges and activities that promote key learning and complements the curriculum.
The students develop skills in communication, problem solving, cooperation, negotiation, and respect, and an appreciation of the natural environment and sustainability. Forbes Shire Council’s Youth Development Assistant Clarissa Stewart described it as a chance for the students to experience the outdoors in a fun, active and inclusive setting. “They can step out of their comfort zones, learn, challenge, grow and develop,” she said. Mayor Graeme Miller said the camp is a great way for students to build relationships with other students before transitioning into high school. “Lake Burrendong offers students a great experience, and with the help of Evolution Mining and the schools, Council is pleased to support it,” he said. THUMBS UP/DOWN COUNCIL COMMENTS The past two weeks have been an extremely sad time for our community following the loss of Peter Corliss. Peter was a muchloved Forbes citizen, who was involved in many organisations and sporting groups and did a lot for the community. He will be greatly missed. In the 10 months since the Council election, new Councillors have been getting to know each other, and share their skills and personalities. We’ve also received many nominations following Council’s invitation for community members to express interest in joining our working groups. We will receive the formal report at our next meeting on Thursday July 20 so we can keep working with you. Under the new Section 355 Committee structure, I’m privileged to Chair the Economic Development Committee, which includes Councillors Jeff Nicholson and Steve Karaitiana. Don’t hesitate to contact us about your ideas for Forbes. Council has resolved to establish a master plan for the old Lachlan Vintage Village site. The plan will solve some of our drain-

#Montefamous’ must have album for July: Taryn La Fauci’s debut album “Cycling” is the perfect combination of stripped back melody and exquisite vocals. This neo-folk album will take you on an adventure filled with music. Taryn’s voice and lyrics will infuse your mind and heart, delivering a message of love, hope and determination. The simplicity of the melody and basic beats enhance all of the tracks on “Cycling”, highlighting the most powerful instrument on the album, Tayrn La Fauci’s voice. The perfect album to listen to on your own on those cold winter days or as background to an intimate dinner, the songs on “Cycling” will generate a con-
Keep clear of emergency crews in the cold: Essential Energy is asking motorists to remain vigilant around emergency response crews repairing the electricity network in challenging working conditions during winter. Regional Manager Northern, Mark Summers said, “The nature of unplanned outages means Essential Energy crews can find themselves working in freezing conditions, on frost-laden or wet ground, and potentially near roads. And motorists travelling near worksites in cold weather should exercise extreme caution.” Essential Energy crews wear high visibility clothing, operate fog and hazard lights in poor weather conditions, and always display safety signage. Where possible, motorists are encouraged to plan a route that avoids areas where repairs to the electrical network are being undertaken or to allocate extra travel time to get to their destination. For more information on electrical safety, visit: www.essentialenergy.com.au/safety or call Essential Energy on 13 23 91.

This year’s NAIDOC theme is Our Languages Matter. How can we help preserve Indigenous languages in Australia?
Di Baker: It would be great to see explanations of place names and street names in the local Aboriginal language.
Janet Callaghan: I’d like to see Aboriginal languages offered as subjects at school.
Melissa Lennane: Maybe on local radio stations announcers could say good morning and good afternoon in the local Aboriginal language as well as English?

My House My Home Window Myths Busted Several myths exist when it comes to windows in homes, and we’re here to help you sort the fact from the fiction. Myth: You need Council or planning permission to replace windows. Fact: This is not true for most homeowners. Replacement of existing windows and doors (provided the opening size remains the same) does not require a planning permit, unless your home is heritage listed. Myth: Windows don’t have any effect on energy efficiency. Fact: Experts estimate that up to 70 percent of energy is lost through windows and doors, and that 90 percent of this heat loss occurs through the glass. There are several products and options that can impact positively on the energy efficiency of your home. Myth: Double-glazed windows work best. Fact: This is not true. While double-glazed windows can work well in both hot and cold climates, reflecting energy back into the room, Low-E Glass works very well in our climate. Also known as Pyrolytic, Smart glass™, or Comfort Plus™, Low-E glass works in three ways. Firstly, it reduces direct heat radiation from the sun. Secondly, it reduces the hot and cold energy transfer between the inside and outside of your window. Finally, if you choose the tinted version (grey or green), it also cuts down glare. Low-E glass is also cheaper than double-glazing. Myth: Anyone can install windows. Fact: While technically this is true, not everyone can install windows correctly. Window installation is an acquired skill, so the more experience an installer has, the better the result will be. Issues that can arise from a poor installation can include leaking, drafts, and difficulty opening and closing. It is always recommended that you use the services of a professional window installer. If you are not confident installing windows, or are not sure where to start, the team here at GlassPlace can help you find a licenced professional installer to help with designing and installing your new windows.

Forbes North Primary Wins Westpac Boost
Forbes North Public School has been awarded this year’s Westpac bank $500 funding boost, which will be used to buy aprons for children involved in cooking classes. The funding boost was first offered last year in the lead-up to Westpac’s 200th birthday milestone, celebrated in April. It was such a success that they decided to do it again. Submissions closed on 23 June, and local staff spent over a week considering around 15 applications, before choosing the winner. “We had about the same number of entries as last year,” said local branch manager, Shannon Crowley. “They were all great, but the Forbes North Primary submission stood out.” “We are happy to be able to contribute to a program that supports children in learning about nutrition, healthy eating, and cooking good foods.” “With Australia having one of the highest rates of obesity in the world, we think what the school is doing will help change this for future generations,” said Shannon. Shannon presented a giant cheque to staff at the school last Friday, but there will be a bigger celebration when the children receive the aprons later this month.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I’ve lived in Forbes since I was a toddler and have enjoyed a good life among good friends and a supportive family. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I’m retired and love volunteering at Jemalong Residential Village, teaching Tai Chi and helping with Friday’s Happy Hour. I’m on the Forbes Riding for the Disabled (RDA) committee, and organise the roster and volunteers. I am on oxygen 24/7 but I help as best I can. What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I love country music musters and festivals and go when I’m able. Along with volunteering, I play croquet twice a week and attend Tai Chi at the Hospital with Master Trainer Libby Godden. I guess I’m a people person and love to help. I crochet to relax. What are you really good at? I’m good at keeping busy. I don’t have time to be bored in retirement. If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would get more retired people out to participate and enjoy life in the great outdoors, perhaps volunteering at RDA, or having a friendly game of croquet. What is your pet hate? It’s not being able to do what I once could, but now I have my oxygen sorted I’m thankful I’m not housebound. What was your best holiday ever? My best holiday was travelling Australia in our caravan seeing all the wonders Australia offers.

Congratulations to Joan Littlejohn and Veva MacCullagh, who scored hat tricks at Golf Croquet last Tuesday. Congratulations also to John Cole, Dorothea Croker, Colleen Liebich, Evelyn Mahlo, Bob Murray, Kevin Rubie, Harley Stewart, Ken Styles, and John Allegri, with two wins each. Aussie Saturday 1st July Depite the sub-zero night temperatures, Saturday turned on the sunshine for some great croquet. It was lovely to see members Elvy and John back from their holiday. John turned up inspite of battling the flu, which proves that you can’t keep a good croquet player down. Members with three winning games were Dorothea Croker, Alec Todd and Lyn Simmonds. John Allegri, Cherylin Cole, Veva MacCullagh, Bob Murray, Libby Smart, Harley Stewart and Barry White each came up with two wins.
