Nominations open for Forbes Indigenous and Junior Indigenous Person of the Year Awards Forbes Shire Council has opened nominations for Forbes Indigenous Person of the Year and Forbes Junior Indigenous Person of the Year Awards. The Forbes Indigenous Person of the Year Award is open to local Indigenous people aged over 18 years, while the Indigenous Young Person of the Year Awards

are open to local Indigenous people aged under 18 years. “Forbes has many outstanding Indigenous residents and this is a chance for the community to see they receive the recognition they deserve,” Mayor Graeme Miller said. The awards are part of NAIDOC celebrations, but while the national week runs in early July, Council will hold a local event on August 24 to ensure more people can participate. “NAIDOC Week falls during school holidays. Having our celebrations later means we can get more of our young people involved, and hopefully the weather will be a little kinder,” Mayor Miller said. The celebrations will feature a march, performances from local schools, and a community barbecue. World class Indigenous performers, Koomurri, will also perform. “Koomurri have performed at the AFL and NRL Indigenous rounds, the Rugby World Cup, and the Sydney and Athens Olympics. More recently they’ve performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and we’re delighted to welcome them to Forbes,” Mayor Miller said. Nominations close at 5pm on Tuesday, August 11. I was present at the film launch in November, so it was great to be involved in unveiling the book, and support these important works, which recognise and promote our local Indigenous culture. The purchase of the former Lachlan Vintage Village site settled last Friday and Council is engaging a consultant to create a master plan for the site. This will involve extensive public consultation, which will begin at the end of this month. Ned Hamilton: The lake is such a great attraction. It would be good to offer more activities down there, canoeing, weekend coffee stalls, and music.

Buffy Phillips: It would be great to expand the local farmers’ market. We live in Bathurst and will travel anywhere for a good market on weekends.

Deputy Premier Invites Forbes To Lunch Deadline Extended For The Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, Skills and Small Business John Barilaro MP will visit Forbes this Saturday as part of an electorate-wide visit to the Orange Electorate. Mr Barilaro will be accompanied by the Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless MLC and will be available to meet with members of the Forbes business community, dryland farmers, irrigators, livestock producers and members of the community at the Vandenberg Hotel, 7 Court Street Forbes at 12.30 pm on Saturday 15th July. “It is important that all sections of the community fully understand the direction the new leadership of the government is taking NSW”, said Mr Colless. “There are some exciting new funding programs bringing serious money to regional NSW which I am sure the Deputy Premier will bring people up to speed with on Saturday.” “John Barilaro is absolutely committed to improving the infrastructure and community facilities throughout regional NSW and this will be an opportunity for those community groups to crystallise their ideas for moving their communities forward”, Mr Colless said. RURAL ROUNDUP Helping Farmers With Mental Health Farmers are one of the most at-risk groups for suicide in Australia. Gaining and building trust, and talking openly about challenges, is the key to protecting their mental health. New research from the University of South Australia assessed the difference between farming and non-farming adults to examine what stops them from using mental health services. “What we really wanted to pin down with the study was, do farmers have a really different set of values and circumstances that might put up barriers to getting help when they need it. Evidence suggests rural Australians prefer to seek non-professional support to manage health concerns, and they have a real desire to be independent and maintain pride, all of which may delay or even stop them from seeking mental healthcare or support,” said Melissa Hull. Farming can be a very physically and psychologically demanding occupation, often in difficult and isolated environments. Communication often becomes a barrier in rural Australia where there is a stereotype of self-reliance and stoicism. There is also a preference for seeking help from family and friends rather than professionals. The research recommends that those support people seek professional advice to help them ensure the safety of the person who has approached them for help. Signs to look out for when someone is facing a mental illness. Behavioural: inability to achieve tasks, poor concentration, social withdrawal, disinterest in normal tasks, and reliance on

alcohol. Emotional: feelings of sadness, guilt, frustration, defeat. Thoughts: feeling like a burden on others, worthlessness and a sense of failure. Physical signs: disrupted sleep, headaches, fatigue and digestive issues. If you are someone you know is experiencing mental health challenges, the most important thing to do is talk about it. Beyond Blue is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 1300 22 4636. You can also email them at any time of day, or chat online from 3pm-12am, seven days a week. Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update The first sale of the season, came with a review of the AWEX headline indicators, which was necessary due to the continuous fining of the Merino clip. The opening sale is traditionally one of the larger of the season, this year’s sale saw just over 51,000 bales offered and despite the increased quantity the market held up remarkably well, with the NRI closing the week at 1593 cents (a reduction of only 6 cents under the revised formula). The skirting market went against the trend of the fleece sector and managed to generally record rises for the week with buyer focus centred on the lower VM wools and those exhibiting excellent length and strength results. In the crossbreds the finer microns performed reasonably well, with 26 to 28 micron recording only minor movements, while 30 to 32 microns eased by 5-10 cents (with the better prepared lines least affected). Most types and descriptions in the oddment sector generally fell resulting in a 20 drop in the MCI. Source: AWEX

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I’ve lived in Forbes for almost a year, and like the people here and the working opportunities. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work at Turners Furniture One, and am completing a traineeship for Certificate III in retail. I enjoy meeting people and helping customers with their furniture choices. What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? When I get home from work I relax and play a couple of games of pool with my Mum. On weekends, I enjoy working on cars with family and friends. What are you really good at? I’m a competitive Muay Thai Kick Boxer. I’m also good at online video games. If you could have a super power, what would it be? Probably shape shifting. What is your pet hate? People who post absolutely everything on social media. What was your best holiday ever? Camping at Nelligen as it was with all my friends and family. Sometime soon I’ll visit all the theme parks at Queensland.

Meniscus Tears Part 2

Whether due to trauma or degenerative changes a torn meniscus will often present with pain and swelling in the knee joint and difficulty straightening the knee. Sometimes there may also be a history of painful clicking or locking. Manual testing and MRI can confirm the diagnosis of a meniscus tear. Whenever possible, physiotherapy is considered the first line of treatment when there are symptoms of a meniscal tear. This involves strengthening exercises, icing to reduce swelling and avoiding activities that put pressure on the joint such as pivoting, squatting or repetitive bending of the knee. One of the main functions of the knee joint meniscus is to absorb shock. Luckily, the muscles around the knee also function as shock absorbers. Research has shown that as muscle strength around the knee increases bone stress decreases and therefore pain and dynamic stability improve. If, after a few weeks of conservative management, pain and dysfunction are still present your doctor may recommend surgery. This is usually day surgery and involves arthroscopic repair or removal of the torn piece of cartilage. As part of the recovery process the muscles around the knee must be strengthened in order to minimise secondary degenerative changes. If osteoarthritis is also present in the affected knee, as is often the case with degenerative meniscus tears, surgical treatment may not provide the pain relief or return to optimal function normally expected of arthroscopic repair. In fact the research indicates that arthroscopic surgery for this population offers no advantage over physiotherapy for relief of symptoms or improvement in function. For the fitness of you.
