JUST A FUN GUY: Guy Webb celebrates winning the “Fast Ideas” event at TEDx Sydney 2017.

Guy’s Superpower? Carbon-hungry Fungi!

When you have an idea worth spreading, the chance to pitch it at a TED conference is a dream come true. This is just what happened to Forbes agronomist, Guy Webb. Guy was one of 6 people selected from 100 applicants to pitch a 30 second “fast idea” at the 2017 TEDx Sydney conference in June. As co-founder of not-for profit organisation Soil C Quest 2031, Guy took the opportunity to pitch their major idea, which is to develop a way to use “carbon capturing fungi” to take carbon dioxide from the air and store it in soil. Farmers would then become “carbon saving superheroes” in the fight to reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Guy made his 30 second pitch to thousands, including a live audience and view-

ers watching via the live simulcast and at satellite events around Australia. Guy’s presentation captivated everyone, and he was voted the winner with thunderous applause. “This is an exciting and timely opportunity for the Soil C Quest project, with support being offered to the project from TEDx through Change.Org, a major marketing organisation.” “The project still has a long way to go though and we are commencing a crowd funding campaign in October to enable us to raise funds to undertake the research and development required,” said Guy. To find out more about the project and how to support it, visit the website at scq. net.au or find them on Facebook or Twitter.

MAYORAL NOTES The 70th Anniversary of the Rotary Changeover Dinner at Garema Hall was a great night on Saturday. The Garema Hall is looking fantastic and the work that has been done out there is a great credit to the community members involved. Next week Councillors Jenny Webb and Phyllis Miller, Director Engineering and Technical Services John Zannes, and myself will be attending the Australian Livestock Markets Association annual conference and annual general meeting in Rockhampton. This will be my last board meeting as the meeting dates clash with Centroc meetings. On Saturday, I met the Deputy Premier John Barilaro when he visited Forbes. It was a great opportunity to discuss grant funding that may be available for Forbes to repair heritage buildings and infrastructure, especially old sporting infrastructure. The Mixed Bowls Competition held on Sunday was a great event with credit to the organising committee. The weather was beautiful and teams came from across the

Why Are Minutes Of Your Meeting Essential?

HELPING OTHERS: Laura Sunderland and Brad Spackman look forward to meeting local patients.

A Year In Country Practice For Medical Students

Forbes Medical Centre has welcomed three new medical students to their practice. Bradley Spackman, Laura Sunderland and Charne Quayle started their 12-month placement last Monday. The third-year medical students from the University of Wollongong (UOW) are here as part of a five-year partnership between the UOW and the Forbes Medical Centre. “This is the fourth year of our agreement with UOW. Due to the success of our teaching program and the positive feedback from students placed at our practice, we now have three students undertaking their placement with us each year,” said Dr Neale Somes. Brad and Laura were drawn to medicine by a desire to combine their interests in science and helping others, and are excited to be here. “Past practical placements have been in acute settings, where we only tend to see patients once. It will be great to get to know

patients over the next 12 months as we work with their regular doctors,” said Laura. During their placement in Forbes the students will spend time learning about general practice and working in the emergency department at the Forbes Hospital. They will also undertake placements in the community and with allied health professionals and visiting specialists. “In the city medicine can be very specialised but here the students are exposed to general medicine, from the cradle to the grave, from obstetrics to palliative care and everything in between,” said Dr Somes. Dr Somes is hopeful that after spending a year in Forbes, the UOW students will be more likely to return to the country to work. “I’m optimistic that exposing students to the life of a rural generalist means they will be more likely to come back to the country to practice when they have completed their training,” he said.

The answer is that they are required by Section 50 the Associations Incorporation Act, 2009 and must be kept by the Secretary. Similarly, corporations are required to keep minutes of meetings too. Members may at all reasonable times inspect the minutes, although shareholders of corporations have only limited ability to view minutes of Directors’ meetings. There are no absolute rules about how minutes of meetings should be set out, other than they need to be in English and be reasonably understood. We suggest that minutes should include; a list of attendance, apologies, correspondence (including electronic) and a Treasurer’s report. The meeting date and location should be recorded, along with the meeting’s start and finish times. Motions need to be accurately set out by the Secretary in the minutes and he or she should indicate if they were carried, lost, or amended and carried. The Chairperson might ask for a show of hands or may pass the motion on the voices. Too often the Chairperson fails to declare the motion as passed and that can lead to controversy. Some laws or rules require motions to have secret ballots, and these must be strictly observed. There should always be a motion to confirm the previous minutes with or without amendments. The Chairperson should sign and date the minutes to certify they are correct. Circulating minutes via email eliminates the need to read out minutes at subsequent meetings, saving time. All Chairpersons, the Executive, and members should read articles on the internet about meeting procedure. If you have questions on Minutes, Meeting Procedure or anything else, please contact any of our Solicitors at Matthews Williams.

Playing Safe With Our Kids Around Australia, about 20 per cent of onfarm injury fatalities are to children under 15 years of age. There are many more injuries to children each year, some with lifelong consequences. The biggest risk is drowning, especially for children under five years old. Other major dangers include machinery and vehicles, particularly quad bikes. National Farm Safety week runs from 17 to 23 July, and chairman of Farmsafe Australia, Charles Amstrong, is encouraging people on properties to take extra care, especially with kids. “Too many children are injured, or worse, killed on our farms each year,” said Charles. “We recommend all farms have a secure safe play area for children under 5 years. Whether you are parents of young children, a grandparent, or simply have kids visiting on your property every now and then, a secure play area is a must. “As an industry, we have reduced the number of farm injury deaths by almost 60% over the past two decades, but we need to do more,” he said. He adds that there are two things people can do right now to provide a safer environment for children who live on or visit their property. “Make sure you have a secure safe play

area and not to allow children on quad bikes. In 2016, three children were killed riding quads. The risk is not worth it. Kids don’t have the physical size, strength, coordination and emotional maturity to safely operate such a dangerous piece of equipment. “It’s not about wrapping them up in cotton wool, it is about taking sensible steps to reduce the chance of things going wrong”. Further information can be found at: www. farmsafe.org.au or by contacting Farmsafe Australia on (02) 6269 5622 or your state Farmsafe group.

Keeping An Eye On Blood Pressure Key To Stroke Prevention Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and is a leading cause of disability in Australia. It kills more women than breast cancer, and more men than prostate cancer. The Stroke Foundation website reports that, in 2017, there will be more than 55,000 new and recurrent strokes – that is 1000 strokes every week or one stroke every 10 minutes. The good news is that more than 80% of strokes can be prevented, and keeping an eye on your blood pressure plays a big part in that. Throughout May and June, people around Australia took part in Australia’s Biggest Blood Pressure Check, making it a huge success. During the campaign a record 63,211 checks were delivered by Stroke Foundation in partnership with Priceline Pharmacy across the country. The campaign far exceeded last year’s tally of 56,000 health checks. Disturbingly, one in three participants was found to have high blood pressure, which is a key risk factor for stroke. The results came as a wake-up call to many, as high blood pressure often has no symptoms. Those found to have high blood pressure and an increased stroke risk were referred onto their doctor for advice on lowering their blood pressure, reducing their risk of stroke and improving their overall health. There are many things we can all do to help protect ourselves from stroke, like

managing our blood pressure, getting more active, maintaining a healthy diet, stopping smoking and reducing our alcohol consumption. Sharon McGowan, Chief Executive Officer of the Stroke Foundation, is grateful for the support the Stroke Foundation receives around the country. “Thanks to our incredible supporters, more Australians are aware of their stroke risk than ever before. But the work doesn’t stop here – it is our mission to prevent, treat and beat stroke. With your help, the Stroke Foundation can continue to run free community health checks to identify Australians at risk of stroke and save lives. “If we can reduce high blood pressure we will have a direct and lasting impact on the rate of stroke in this country,” said Ms McGowan. It is important to know your blood pressure numbers, so if you haven’t had your blood pressure tested lately, make a time to see your doctor for a quick check. The Stroke Foundation recommends the F.A.S.T. test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions: • Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? • Arms Can they lift both arms? • Speech Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? • Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away. Emergency medical treatment soon after symptoms begin improves the chance of survival and successful rehabilitation. For more information, talk to your doctor, or visit www.strokefoundation.org.au

MITCHELL MARTIN – INTO THE LIGHT Mitchell Martin’s debut album “Into the Light” is a Pop album with a twist. This great Pop album has elements of rock blended into the tracks, and a brilliant polish of blues. Mitchell is only 20 and his talent as a lyricist already demonstrates a skill that song writers twice his age would envy. “Into the Light” has a darkish pop vibe, with Mitchell’s voice offering an optimistic and graceful path to the deeper meaning in each track. Even the title track is rich with significance. Written for his girlfriend, it describes how she pulled him into “into the light”. This is a must have album that will not disappoint.

DYNAMIC DUO: Steven Walker and David Sly of Walkers AGnVET Forbes, modelling the jerseys the Forbes Rugby Club teams will wear this weekend.

Holy Fundraisers, Batman, It’s On Again!

The dynamic duo will take no prisoners at Platypi Park this weekend as Forbes Rugby Club superheroes do battle with the competition in the annual Charity Day. The Mudgee Wombats will face the First Grade Platpyi who, donning Batman jerseys, are expected to “Smash”, “Bam!”, and “Pow!” their way through a hard-fought game. Meanwhile, in red and black, the Wolfpack will channel Robin’s enthusiasm to “Crunch!”, “Kapow”, and “Thunk” their opponents in a feisty display. After the games, the caped crusaders will offer up their jerseys for auction to the highest bidders. The Charity Day is one way the Club and players give back to their supporters and sponsors. It aims to raise funds for the local community and causes that are close to the club’s heart. Club Manager, Phil Prior, said that some of the funds this year will support The Long Walk for Lungs. Organised by AGnVET Services in conjunction with the Lung Foundation Australia, the walk will be supported by many participants who will be walking part of the

journey with Bill Van Nierop. Bill was diagnosed in 2015 with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a rare progressive lung disease associated with scarring of the lung tissue that makes it difficult to breath. The five-year survival rate is as low as some of the more devastating cancers – approximately 20%. Bill set up The Long Walk for Lungs to raise awareness of IPF in rural Australia and raise funds to support research into IPF and lung disease more broadly, as 7 out of 10 research programs in this area will receive virtually no funding. The walk will begin in Narromine on 14 August, and follow a 697km route through Central Western NSW passing through the towns of Trundle, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Griffith, Leeton, West Wyalong, finishing in Forbes. Walkers AGnVET in Forbes have had a long association with the Rugby Club, and are grateful for its support in helping their colleague, Bill. So, if you have time on Saturday, come along and support the teams and their fantastic efforts to support The Long Walk for Lungs and other local charities. The Colts will kick off at 12.45pm.

This week we are sending best wishes for a complete recovery to one of our major stalwarts in Alec Todd. We hate to see any of our members not well enough to join us at Croquet, so hurry and get those tests done and get back to us Alec. We all miss you and Lorraine. Thanks to John and other members for stepping up to help Libby set up. Another one out of action is our Secretary Anne. Hope you are mended soon Anne. Golf Croquet On Tuesday 11 July magic numbers went to Jeff Liebich, Libby Smart and Lyn Simmonds with three games each, closely followed by Lorna Field, Robin Pols, Caryl Slattery, Jill Rubie, Harley Stewart, Tony Thomson and Barry White with two games each. Aussie Saturday Last Saturday there were some good games with close scores. What began as an extremely foggy morning turned out to be a beautiful sunny day. The day’s hat tricks went to Veva MacCullagh, Robin Pols and Kevin Rubie with 2 wins each to John H Browne, Dorothea Croker, John MacCullagh and Dorelle Scott.

Got a great sports story? Whether it's hockey, rugby league, soccer, rugby union, croquet, bowls, golf, squash, tennis, swimming, gymnastics or even curling, we want to hear from you!
