MUSIC TO THE EARS... Forbes local Shannen Toole, won over judges with her remarkable rendition of ‘They just keep moving the line” in the Open section of the Forbes Services Club Talent Quest Grand Final.

Forbes Talent On Display At Quest

The Forbes Services Club Talent Quest revealed the splendid talents hidden within the community of Forbes. An audience of more than 300 people were astounded by the remarkable performances showcased at the Talent Quest Grand Final which was hosted by the Forbes Services Memorial Club last Friday. The competition consisted of three heats held during May of which 25 finalists were eventually selected to battle it out during the Grand Final. To move onto the final, contenders had to score 61 points from the judges. With $1,600 in prize money to be won, the stakes were high and contestants came from as far as Young, Ungarie and even visitors from New Zealand, to try and claim their share.

Two independent judges from 2PK and ROK FM, John Daskey and Elliott Kinsela had the very challenging task to determine the ultimate winner, with each performance being as good as the one before. Forbes dominated the Open division results with all winners being locals. This section was of very high standard and extremely competitive. Shannen Toole took out first place; second place went to Jade McGovern and third to Amanda Williams. In the Junior division, Birdee Sideris won first place, Gracey Denham Jones came second and Georgia Sideris was awarded third. Winner of the Sub-junior division was Anabelle Van Wyk, Ruby Markwort (second) and Gemma Ellis (third).

THUMBS ... COUNCIL COMMENTS It’s been another massive weekend for sport in Forbes and it was especially great to see the town buzzing with a large range of junior sport. We have had some big carnivals to town which have a major impact on the local economy. It’s a significant benefit to local businesses and accommodation venues with people travelling from right across the state. As well as providing opportunities to play against other teams and skill levels, these carnivals are vital to keep Forbes moving forward. The National Carp Control Plan hosted a briefing to discuss the integrated strategy for the control of carp, as we know that they are a real problem in our Lachlan River. The plan aims to help recover the health of Australian waterways and aquatic biodiversity and is based on thorough and measured approaches, ensuring the benefits and risks of carp biocontrol are understood and the right recommendations are made to government. The carp virus, Cyprinid herpes virus 3, is

THUMBS UP To the Forbes Motorcycle Club committee and volunteers for their first motocross meeting held recently. This, after a prolonged interval caused by vandalism and theft of supplies and equipment, which the club had worked hard to obtain over a period of time. The meeting was run exceptionally well considering the roadblocks they have had to endure. My thumb goes up to them!

A critical challenge for the National Carp Control Plan is to demonstrate how we can manage carp that are killed by the disease in a way which minimises impacts on water quality, people, livestock and na-

General Manager Steve Loane said that as custodians of the lake area, council is determined to ensure that the area is able to be enjoyed by all members of the community. “One of the best aspects of Lake Forbes is that it hosts a wide variety of activities- from walkers and joggers to families having picnics,” said Steve. “Dogs off the lead are not conducive to the safety of these users, so we need to make sure that they are appropriately controlled.” Fines of up to $220 may apply to individuals found with dogs off the lead. Inland Rail Contracts Create New Jobs

The first load of Inland Rail concrete sleepers is unloaded at the rail alignment between Parkes and Narromine.

Economic benefits of the Inland Rail project are starting to roll in for the production and transport sectors. Twenty new jobs were created at Rocla’s Braemar concrete sleeper plant in Mittagong in the Southern Highlands after the company was awarded a $20 million contract to produce 200,000 sleepers for the first stage of the project in NSW. “The 200,000 concrete sleepers required for the Parkes to Narromine section of Inland Rail is the first of 1.5 million that will be required to build the full 1,700km length of the Inland Rail from Brisbane to Melbourne, opening a pipeline of further opportunities for Australian suppliers,” said Inland Rail

Program Delivery Director Simon Thomas. “The track between Parkes and Narromine will have Whyalla steel rail, Mittagong concrete sleepers and other material contracts from all over Australia.” Rail company, Pacific National is also benefiting by making the first delivery of sleepers to Peak Hill last month. Over the next six months, Pacific National will run a train once a week from Mittagong to Peak Hill carrying around 9,000 concrete sleepers each trip. “When it comes to hauling bulk freight, rail is the safest, most efficient and environmentally-friendly mode of transport,” said Pacific National President of Freight Andrew Adam.

Three Tips For The Best Wedding Ever 1. Use a Wedding App or Hashtag: There are many great wedding apps to choose from for your big day. Some interactive apps allow guests to upload wedding photos into one curated place, while others keep your friends and family up on any wedding-related news. Why not create a clever hashtag and ask guests to tag all of their photos using it. 2. Give Out-of-Town Guests a Welcome Basket: Whether you’re hosting a destination wedding or a hometown bash, to show your appreciation, give welcome bags for guests staying at hotels. Include a few snacks, bottles of water, and a list of local resources, restaurants and cafes, plus any nearby attractions. If you’re able to splurge, throw in a bottle of wine, tasty local treats like an artisan cheese or chocolate and a guidebook. 3. Create a Well-Planned Seating Chart: A smart seating chart is vital to ensuring your guests have a good time. Why not name each table with something to do with the bride and groom for fun!

The Orange Male Voice Choir delighted audiences in a recent concert hosted by the Bogan Gate CWA.

Bogan Gate CWA Hosts Successful Concert

Bogan Gate CWA members were overwhelmed by the response from locals to our Orange Male Voice Choir concert held at the Bogan Gate Hall on Sunday. Our president, Marion McIntyre warmly welcomed 127 visitors who had travelled from Parkes, Forbes, Trundle, Tullamore, Tottenham, Orange, Condobolin, Bogan Gate and the 32 members of the choir. A special welcome was extended to Barbara Newton, the Deputy Mayor of Parkes Shire and to Shirley Edwards, group president of Oxley Group of CWA. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed listening to the choir of which the members varied in age. The choir sang a great variety of songs and they even sang a bracket of Beatles songs. The choir celebrated its

90th year in 2016. They have performed all over the world and around Australia and we were very proud to have them sing in Bogan Gate for the third time. We are very appreciative of the Northparkes Community Investment Program Grant we received from Northparkes Mine, which will help greatly towards our advertising costs. Our visitors were able to catch up with friends and meet the very friendly choir members and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea that was provided by our very capable CWA members. It was great to see so many happy people who had the best afternoon of entertainment and food at Bogan Gate.

With it being the June long weekend, residents are reminded that this can be a trying time for dogs who may have an aversion to fireworks. Director of Planning and Growth with Forbes Shire Council, Paul Bennett said that though it can be stressful for some pets there are a number of things that you can do as an owner to minimise the impact. “Number one action to take would be to ensure that your pet is registered and the details are up to date. You can do this at council and the process is quick and easy and will help to identify your dog quickly if he or she escapes,” said Paul. “Keeping an eye on them is also important but avoid fussing over your pet too much and try to engage them in normal inside activities.” “Your local vet may also be able to recommend some new treatment options for managing noise phobias.” For more information, contact council’s Environment Services and Planning department on (02) 6850 2344 or your local veterinarian.

Biggest Steer Weight Gain Ever? Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update 30,439 bales were offered to the trade and strong demand was evident from the outset. The majority of the merino spectrum was swept further into record territory and by the final hammer prices had generally risen by 40-60 cents, leaving the NRI 43 cents dearer at 2,076. The skirting market behaved very similarly to the fleece, small impurities e.g. colour or cott, were basically overlooked as buyers scrambled to secure meaningful quantity. Prices generally increased by 40-80 cents, wools finer than 18 micron and those carrying less than 4% vegetable matter recording the largest gains. The crossbred sector had another week of mixed results, 30 to 32 micron again failed to attract strong support and recorded little movement. 25 to 28 microns on the other hand, were strongly contested, pushing prices up by 25-55 cents. A limited offering of oddments received solid support, which was reflected in the three carding indicators rising by over 11 cents. Next week will see 27,270 bales rostered for sale Nationally.

A greedy Senepol/Angus cross steer has recorded a whopping 4.6kg daily weight gain during the Callide Dawson Beef Carcase Competition in Queensland, the highest mid-term weight gain in its 30 year history. The 24-month-old steer, one of three entered by first time exhibitors Clayton and Sarah Maynard, Southern Star Rural, Canowindra NSW, currently leads the pack of 143 competition steers at the 53 day mark of their feedlot preparation. Senepols are leading the way for breed results too with the top four exhibits doing 3.41kg/day, ahead of the overall competition average of 2.87kg/day. Owner Clayton Maynard from Canowin-

dra, integrated Senepols alongside a composite breeder herd when he began his operation eight years ago, with this indulgent steer sired by 5 Star 130509. Clayton credited genetic selection as the secret to the steer’s surprising success having been a middle of the range animal when he left for the competition. “At the time I didn’t think this particular steer was a stand out, he wasn’t an overly big calf and was middle of the range for weight,” he said. “I think we are doing a good job, but entering a competition like this provides positive afirmation on the decisions we have made. I think that’s vital for decision making down the track.” A selection of quality Senepol and Senepol/Angus and Senepol/Charolais bulls are available for sale from Southern Star Rural in Canowindra. Call Clayton Maynard on 0439 029 204 for more information.

& SPORTS INJURIES CENTRE

Keeping you fit for life

Does Golf Make Your Back Hurt? Injuries to the lower back are one of the most common golf related problems. The incidence of lower back pain in the male golfer is between 25% to 36% and between 22% to 27 % in females. It has been reported to account for up to 52% of all injuries in recreational golfers and 24% of injuries in professional golfers. The injury mechanism of nearly half of all lower back injuries in golf is due to the swing. The modern golf swing has been shown to produce large forces on the lower back, which change directions rapidly during the swing. Because golf is played in a slightly forward flexed position, along with the asymmetrical, rotational nature of the swing, the forces the joints in the lower back are subject to are quite high. The compression force on the spine during the swing has been shown to be up to eight times body weight. How to prevent getting back pain. Maintenance of good mobility in the hips and thoracic and lumbar spine is important. This may require a regular exercise programme at home along with a good warm up before you play, whilst using proper technique when lifting your bag and bending through the knees when retrieving the ball. If you already have lower back pain consider slowing your back swing down. Make sure your weight properly shifts to your back foot and your hips rotate during the back swing. Also, avoid placing your feet too far apart during the address phase as this limits hip rotation later in the swing and increases stresses on the lower back. For the fitness of you Linda Reilly

FORBES SPORT

Busy Times On The Golf Course Saturday’s men’s event was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by BWR Accountants and Advisors. The field of 64 players had few standout scores and many calamities. The A-grade winner was Peter Nixon, who was surprised to see that his score of 75 nett was enough to take the medal honours. Runner-up on count back, was Ecky Dawson on 76 nett. The B-grade went to Graham Newport with a nett 70, the best score of the day. Runner-up was Martin Cahill, whose 73 nett was very gallant indeed. The C-grade produced a wide range of results. Ash Tucker compiled 71 nett to be the winners. Runner-up was Graeme Hopkins with 73 nett, and who was especially pleased to enter the winners circle. The ball sweep went to 76 nett on count back, going to: 70 – G Newport; 71 – A Tucker; 73 – G Hopkins, M Cahill; 74 – B Slack-Smith, A Borger, D Clarke, F Hanns; 75 – P Nixon and 76 – G Webb, P Dawson, B Everest, K Herbert, J Betland, P Barnes, J Haley, S French. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Richard Nixon; 18th – Paul Kay.

On Sunday the 27-hole Mixed Foursomes Championship was played, with fifteen pairings participating. The scratch winners were A Dukes/ S Crosby with a total of 131. Their win was set up by a steadfast 85 scratch on the first 18-holes. Scratch runners-up, on count back, were A Grierson/ K Stirling with a 136 total. The handicap winner honours also went to Dukes/Crosby, with a total of 109.5. Runners-up went to Stephen and Eve Uphill on 114.5. The Uphill’s produced the best nett on the final-9 but they could not overcome some unfortunate penalties incurred on the 9th hole. The ball sweep went to 116.5, going to: Dukes/Crosby, Uphill/Uphill, A Cogswell/ Davies and Taylor/Cripps. The NTP’s went to: 9th – D Rhodes; 18th – T Griffiths. The 9th hole brought many pairings undone, especially on the final-9. While 3’s were common, so too were 5’s and worse. The real shocker was a ‘9’. By Short Putt

Croquet News Week ending 2nd June On Tuesday, 29th May golf croquet saw a large number of members attending the day’s games with two groups having to follow on. The morning had Veva MacCullagh, Bob Murray, Robin Pols, Libby Smart and Marj Styles as the winners of three games. A frosty start to Saturday, 2nd June and yet again we had another good turnout, with four visitors bringing the number of people attending to 31 in total. Welcome back to regular visitors to our town, Barry Shearing and Helen Moore. Another welcome to Gay Mitchell and Jennie Arthur, on their first visit. The winners of three games on this day were Cherylin Cole, John MacCullagh, Bob Murray, Robin Pols and Bill Scott. Well done to all! There were many creative dress ups at Saturday, 26th May’s netball competition, when the FNA players and committee members went ‘Crazy For The Kids Cancer Project’ fundraiser. This day is an annual event held across all netball associations in NSW, to raise much needed funds for the charity. Although the final figure is not known at this stage, players and committee members enjoyed the fun day of ‘Crazy Hair and Sock Day’. A huge thank you to Elsa Cusack who cooked magnificent cakes that were sold out very quickly. Best dressed in NetSetGo were Zoe Amery and second Chloe Amery. Best dressed were Ella White in Giants and Tara Higgins in Possums. Well done to the Vixens and Joeys for best dressed teams. Elsa Cusack was awarded best dressed socks. Friday Netball Friday netball continues this week from 5pm until 6pm for any boys and girls who would like to learn more skills and have fun playing netball. Friday netball is free and players do not have to be registered or play in the Saturday competition to join in the fun. Learning Umpires Learning umpires are very welcome and any parents who would like to learn the rules or how to umpire should also come along to Friday netball or ask at Saturday competitions. It is very handy sometimes for parents to learn to umpire and help out if an established umpire is unavailable. Canteen Duty Thank you to the volunteers who have helped in the canteen. Everyone is reminded that orders for hot chips should be placed during the 11-10 round of games, so that the chips can be cooked and ready when games are finished. Long Weekend There will be no Saturday competition over the June long weekend and no Friday netball either.
