Little Bang Discovery Club Launches In Forbes

The Little Bang Discovery Club was launched in Forbes last week and caters to the curious, the inquisitive and the creative three to five year olds in the Forbes community. Facilitators in Forbes have been trained by the Children’s Discovery Museum to deliver this fun filled hands-on program focusing on genuine scientific enquiry. “Thanks to the generosity of Telstra Kids Foundation and Clean TeQ Sunrise we have been able to purchase the resource kit needed to run the Little Bang Science Club program,” said Maree Yapp from Forbes North SaCC. Forbes North SaCC and Forbes Learning Ladder worked together to bring the Little Bang Science Club to the Preschoolers room last week and a representative from Clean TeQ Sunrise was on hand to help out. “Clean TeQ Sunrise is proud to invest in the Little Bang Science kit through our Matched funding for schools program. We know that early STEAM education is critical to developing the kind of scientific thinking that Clean TeQ Sunrise will need from our local workforce over the twenty-plus years the mine is expected to operate,” said Justine Fisher, General Manager, Government External Relations and Community Clean TeQ Sunrise. “Maree Yapp has done a great job making sure the Little Bang Science kit is available to as many three to eight year old chil-

THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN MAYORAL NOTES What a busy week it has been. You would have noticed the work happening down at the lake in Sir Francis Forbes Park. This is a hardstand and worksite for Roads and Maritime Services for the duration of the construction of the Camp Street Bridge. Don’t be alarmed, it will be reinstated back to its former condition on the completion of the works. The lights in the trees in Templar Street have been taken down for repair work and the trees will be trimmed. They will be re-installed in the next couple of months in time for Taste on Templar in November. The Visitor Information Centre at the Railway has been closed this week for minor repairs. It will be business as usual on Saturday. Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. I visited Carrawobitty Homestead this week to listen to Lakie and his Larrikins. They were great! I was very impressed with the restoration of the homestead. Congratulations to Monica and Ken for taking on this restoration work, the place looks

amazing. We have a new Local Government Minister, Shelley Hancock. Shelley was the speaker for the house for 8 years before being appointed, and we are so lucky to have her voice in parliament. And what a voice she has! Councils across the state were set to pay for $13.9 million emergency services levy hike, which equates to a cost of $70,000 for the Forbes Shire. This week the State Government has agreed to fund this extra cost this year. It’s a win for local government and our community. I would like to thank Linda Scott, Local Government NSW President, and my colleagues on the board, David Elliot, Minister for Police and Emergency Services, John Barilaro, acting Premier of NSW who have all done a great job in passing this through. Bedgerabong Show is on this weekend, and I encourage you all to go along and

Ridgehaven Annual Ram Sale In Cudal

Ridgehaven Poll Dorset Stud is owned and run by the Legge Family – Jessie, Ruth, Floyd and Isabele. Their focus is to produce rams with genetics that assist commercial lamb producers to be more efficient and profitable. The long term breeding program concentrates on high growth rates and early maturity for on-farm efficiency and marketing options, together with well-defined carcase shape and adequate fat coverage for premium carcase quality and higher yields. Animal management advantages are also a priority, with smooth shoulder settings for ease of lambing, correct leg and foot conformation for ram mobility and functionality, and tight downs wool for a higher skin value. The Poll Dorset breed is well known for their fast growth and high yielding carcase. Dorset-cross lambs are highly sought after by the meat processors and regularly attract a premium price due to the quality and consistency of the product. Gathering Of The Great Greats A huge get-together of Fitzgerald descendants will converge on Burcher and Forbes on September 14 2019 to celebrate the proud pioneering heritage of their family. Edward aka Thomas Fitzgerald came from Dublin to Sydney on the Tyne as a 15-yearold convict in 1819 and was buried in the Forbes cemetery in 1878. Thomas Fitzgerald’s surviving children with wife Mary Gorman were Ann, Margaret, Richard and Mark. “Mark Fitzgerald was my great-grandfather,” said Beth Thomas of Parkes who is looking forward to the reunion. “He was a pioneer of note in the Forbes District, building the first timber bridge over the Lachlan River on the Newell Highway and later opening the hotel at Moonbi in the roaring days when two Cobb and Co coaches travelled daily from Condobolin to Forbes via Moonbi,” said Beth. “He was a thorough bushman,” added Beth’s sister, Susan Harvey of Gosford, “After following the gold diggings of Ba-

thurst, Grenfell and Forbes he selected his property, Uplands, of Wamboyne and was instrumental in the development of not only the district, but the state.” Mark married Annabella Thorpe, who was the first schoolteacher of a school in Parkes, and they had 16 children, three of whom drowned one tragic sunny day in the care of their nursemaid, whilst their mother was confined in late pregnancy with a son who died a year after. The children are buried on a property along the Lachlan west of Jemalong. Mark and Annabella’s daughter Isabel refrained from going in the boat that fateful day and grew up to become the first schoolteacher of the Wamboyne district. The immediate descendants of Mark and Annabella were Harrisons of Condobolin, Rileys of Gooloogong, Andersons of Clear Ridge, Joneses of Girral, and Fitzgeralds of Wamboyne and Sydney. A very large number of the descendants of these families are expected to get together at the upcoming reunion.

The Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is currently looking at options for the delivery of maternity services at the Lachlan Health Service. Expressions of interest were called for recently, inviting parents who have recently used, or expect to use, maternity services in Parkes and Forbes to participate in focus groups. The broader community is also being invited to have their say through a survey that can be done online or submitted by mail or email. Parkes and Forbes combined currently have less than 250 births occurring each year. In spite of repeated attempts to recruit doctors with training in obstetrics and anaesthetics – both of which are required to offer a full medical maternity service – vacancies have led to births currently only being available at Forbes hospital. While these recruitment issues persist, the WNSWLHD is encouraging the community to consider other models which could continue to see births occurring at both facilities, potentially with one hospital accepting low-risk births that could be performed under the supervision of a trained midwife. Several options are outlined in the community consultation survey, with the community invited to consider the current circumstances and have their say on these models of service. The WNSWLHD Board is due to consider plans for Lachlan maternity services, including the feedback provided by the community and consumers, before the end of 2019. Links to the online survey, and to a printable version that can be emailed or mailed, can be found on the WNSWLHD website at www.wnswlhd.health.nsw.gov.au The consultation will close at 5pm on Friday 23 August, 2019.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I moved here when I was 9 – so I’ve lived here 24 years. Forbes is a great place to bring up the kids, we love it! Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work at Bernardi’s and have done for over 20 years. I work with great people and enjoy chatting with the customers. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? There is no time to unwind with 4 kids! On weekends we take them to sport and after work I’m straight home to cook dinner for the family (Larissa doesn’t cook)! What are you really good at? There’s not much I’m not good at! Look at me I am perfect! What is your pet hate? When people don’t answer a call on a mobile phone. It’s called a mobile for a reason people - take it with you and answer it when people call! If you could have a super power what would it be and why? I’d have dinner cooked for me every night because my partner doesn’t seem to know where the kitchen is.

LEGAL EagleColumn Header FEATURE What Constitutes A Valid Contract?

Offer and acceptance is the critical factor when considering what is a valid contract. If person A offers to do something and person B unconditionally accepts that offer and communicates the acceptance to A, then there is a concluded agreement. However, if A makes an offer and B responds with a counter-offer, there is no agreement and neither party is bound. Every day we enter such simple contracts at the supermarket or newsagency or on the internet. Most contracts are not written but are verbal. There are some contracts which, by law, must be in writing (such as an agreement for the sale of land), but agreements can, in certain circumstances, be oral as well as written. An additional facet is what is called “part performance,” which is where one party performs or partly performs an agreement, and the other party accepts those actions. In this case there is a contract. Some essential ingredients of a contract are: • a concluded agreement between the parties • an intention that the agreement be legally binding • some benefit must be given by one party to the other (this is called consideration) • the consent of the parties must be genuine, that is not mistaken nor under duress • the parties must be legally capable of entering into the agreement • the purpose of the contract must be legal. Generally, anyone over 18 has legal capacity to enter into a contract, but there are limitations regarding people with intellectual disability or mental illness. Credit contracts and agreements regarding land must, by law, be written. Otherwise, valid verbal agreements will be enforced by the Courts. Good Scores In Doolin Memorial On Saturday, the competition was a 4BBB Stableford Medley, playing for the Bob & Daine Doolin Memorial, and sponsored by the Francis Family. It was a small field of 32 due to the prevailing conditions, but they did manage some good scoring. The winners were the pairing of Mat Duff and Brett Slack-Smith with 45 points, on count back from Runners-up Don and John Ridley, also on 45 points. The ball sweep went to non-place getters, being: 43 – R Scott/D Bernardi; 41 – A McDonald/D Rhodes; 40 – R Smith/P Pymont on count back. John Boyle (Tathra Beach) was the only visitor, and who really enjoyed the 19th hole. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Ladies: D Tilley; Men: D Churchill; 18th – Ladies: Nil; Men: A McDonald. Doug did manage his ‘2’, and was the only player to do so. There was no Sunday Stableford Medley played, primarily because of the weather. The Sand Grass Greens Championship, sponsored by Forbes Shire, is being played this weekend, with Round 1 at Grenfell on Saturday and an 11am shotgun start. Round 2 is at Forbes on Sunday, with

play commencing at 9am, also a shotgun start. Walk-up starters will be accepted on the day. Some Forbes players travelled to Cowra to participate in their Open Weekend. Weather severely affected the Sunday play, reducing the event to 18-holes. The winner scored 70 Scratch, with Steve Betland finishing Runner-up on 72, followed by John Betland in Third with 73. Andrew Dukes retained his form to finish equal 5th alongside Shane Sallaway on 75. By Short Putt

The birthday luncheon was enjoyed at the Forbes Services Memorial Club with August birthdays for Jeff Liebich, Geoff Coles and Jane Hanbury. Tony Thomson was presented with his OBE award. The Aussie Croquet games were cancelled last Saturday as the weather conditions kept us all looking for a warm place at home with freezing temperatures all weekend. We will all be hoping for a fine day next week as we look forward to our games. By Colleen Liebich
